20 Link Building Methods and How to Use Them

May 6, 2011 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Zac 4,468

Search Engine Optimization

We all know that Google insists on quality content and I support that, but we all know that links play a major role in website rankings. I am tired of people saying things like, “Create diversified link profiles and build high quality links,” without telling you what is needed for the diversified link profile or where to go to build links. So, here is a list of 20 link building methods that will help you in your SEO struggles and link building campaigns.

link building methods and ways

1. Forum Posts – The most basic method of link building. Find an active forum within your target niche, create an account, add the link to your signature, and start posting.

This is good for two things:

A) It creates a link with your chosen keyword from a niche related website.

B) By participating in a forum, you can establishing yourself as authority in your niche. Well, that is if you help others and don’t spam. Regular posting in forums, the legit way, can be a great source of traffic.

2. Social Bookmarking – Using sites like Digg, Reddit, Delicious, and StumbleUpon can garner you a mass following.

Submitting links to social bookmarking sites will get you quite a bit of traffic and more interest. This means better search engine rankings. But that will not happen on its own. It’s not enough to just create these accounts and bookmark links. No, you have to engage community, find some like-minded people to follow that will follow back, and digg and like their pages. In return, they will do the same for you.

3. Social Media – Build profiles on sites like Twitter and Facebook, then submit your links along with relevant comments. You’ll garner followers interested in what you have to say.

Again, you need to engage with people from your industry. No one will give you 2 seconds of their time if you are not willing to offer your time in return. The beginning is especially hard, but these two sites are a huge wealth of traffic waiting to hit your website, so invest time and effort into building connections and it will pay off.

4. Guest Posts – Consider writing guest posts on blogs of a similar niche with links back to your own content.

This is one of my favorite methods of link building. You get an in-content link, and if you publish your post on a website with high traffic like Famous Bloggers, you can get more exposure. Like with everything else, connect, engage, comment, and offer more and more. These few examples should give you a hint that social interaction is the key to website promotion and link building.

5. Link Bait – Write an article people will want to link to. Something that’s catchy and useful for your niche.

This is easier said than done! Link baiting is actually an art on its own. Doesn’t matter if we are talking about articles, apps, widgets or infographics, they are the holy grail of link building. For starters, try to write something that has quality and really helps people. Spend some time doing research and write something unique, and you will have your very own link bait. Of course, the power of your social connections is what will make it viral, so if you are a new blogger it will be really difficult for you to try this method. But in the end, every single article can be seen as link bait.

6. Linking to Others – Others in your niche can help increase your link building efforts by linking back to you if they see you’ve linked first.

Linking out is a great way to gain links. Mention of people and blogs from your industry in your blog posts can actually get you a few quality backlinks, so don’t be afraid to link out. Also, link out to major authorities in your industry; show Google and your visitors that you know what quality is and that you will gladly tell others about it.

7. Link Exchanges – Link exchanges work similar to the idea above, but the approach is more direct.

People either avoid link exchanges or overdo it. Like everything else, this one needs a bit of moderation. Find several highly related websites from your niche you can relate to and you can freely exchange links. No harm no foul. Don’t skip this step, but don’t exchange 50 links. Be moderate. Also, you can go for reciprocal, 3 way or even 4 way link exchanges.

8. Link Directories – People think that submitting to link directories is pretty much the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality link building.

Wrong. Quality niche directories can give you a powerful link boost and will spice up your link profile. Don’t skip this step. Like link exchanges, find a few authority directories in your specific niche and get listed there. But don’t go around submitting your website into every directory you find.

9. Free Templates – This one is a little harder but can provide you with great results. Links in the footer to your content go up on any site using the theme, whether it’s WordPress, Joomla, etc.

This is not a link bait and it is. A good theme on its own is a link bait and will get links, but what I am suggesting here is to create free themes and templates that you will offer the community to use, for free, as long as they keep the link in the footer of the template intact.

10. WordPress Plugin – If you’re a coder and you create a plugin that people have a need for, it can bring you some decent traffic if the plugin proves to be useful.

This speaks on its own – a link bait and not, just like a theme. But this is for advanced users with some significant tech skills.

11. Contest – Promote yourself with a contest offering prizes for people to enter. Tell them to spread the word. The more participants you have, the more links will be spread.

This is a great way to get people to spread the word about you and to get some natural links. But you have to find a good idea for the contest, which is not hard. This is one of the definitive must use link building and website promotion tactics.

12. Blog Network – Time consuming, but creating a blog network linked to your main blog to help promote it can be one way of building links.

Or, you can join plenty of existing blog networks and engage with bloggers there. Similar to social networks, but highly targeted.

13. Paid Reviews – If you have a product, offer to pay bloggers to write a review about the product.

Or don’t pay – you can get free reviews by offering your product for free or with a grand discount, which is a promotion on its own. Offer to give your product or service away for free in exchange for a review with links to your website.

14. Giveaways – Giveaway some of your product for free. People will grab it and link to the site.

Similar to reviews, but you are not asking for anything in return, which may prove to be more beneficial or less. It all depends on the level of promotion and the buzz you create in social circles.

15. Become An Authority – Write on topics people need to know more about in your niche. People will link to these articles.

Everything leads to this. Every article, forum post, tweet and everything you did will lead to this point. But this is one thing not everyone can do and it certainly won’t happen over night.

16. Web 2.0 – Create a Squidoo lens or HubPages article that details products or information in your niche. Make sure the lens includes a link back to your own website.

Squidoo and HubPages are great places to show others that you are in fact an authority in your niche, and also to connect and engage with more and more people. I just got around to this, but links from these web 2.0 properties can prove to be very powerful. You just think up the quality of your content, and no Google update will worry you.

17. Competitive Linking – Find blogs and sites where competitors have linked their services and products and link yours there as well.

This is plain old competitor research, but instead of contacting sites and asking for links, you look for membership sites, profiles, and places where you can list your services. This is very easy to do. Just follow-up on your competitor backlinks, and you will find plenty of these free link opportunities.

18. Blog Comments – This one is pretty much like forum signatures. Find blogs with content the same as yours, leave a link to your website in the comments section where allowed.

Sounds simple and it is simple, but in order to gain the most, you need to offer a useful comment. Don’t go around with “great post” and “love your work” type of comments. Offer something; give a real opinion, positive or negative. But comment on the article in question, and you will get noticed and that link will be clicked on.

19. Hire a link builder – The above methods take a lot of time and expertise. Hiring someone with the knowledge to do it for you can be more effective than doing it yourself.

If you have the funds and wish someone with experience to build links for you, hiring a link builder or an SEO company is the best option you have. The only part that is tricky is finding someone who is a good link builder and offers legit link building services and not spam links. I would recommend looking through SEOmoz marketplace for that.

20. Sponsor A Cause – Know of a charity drive that’s beneficial to your niche? Announce your sponsoring of it and people are sure to take notice.

Again, if you have money, this is a great way to gain some authoritative links from trusted domains and organizations. Most companies will link back to you under their list of thanks, so this is always a great way to get quality links without actually buying links. I would advise against it unless you know very well what you are doing.

So there you have it

20 ways to build links and what to look for. Some of these methods can be used by the absolute beginner, while others require some experience and technical knowhow, but you will get there. Remember that in online or brick and mortar business, you need to have a plan and something to look forward to. SEO is the best way to go about getting some serious traffic in the long run, so don’t skip link building. By all means, of course, use everything you can, including social media marketing, PPC, and offline efforts to bring traffic to your websites.

This list does show you in fact how to gain those precious links. Guest blogging I think is one of the best ways. You get traffic plus links in return. Gotta love that!
  2. Satrap says:
I think article marketing is still one of the best ways to build links that can actually help you climb the serps.
  3. Trung Nguyen says:
I always think guest blogging and blog commenting are the best way to build back-links for any blog. Thanks for share with us 18 other ways.
  4. Surminga says:
Blog commenting has to be my favoured method into building backlinks, it is useful as you potentially gain a backlink as well as reading content and learning something new most of the time - great list
    • Alex says:
Indeed blog commenting has many gains. You learn something new, you get to share your opinion and also to get a backlink.
  5. Daniel says:
Its easy to say "create quality content" but I think it's also a misnomer as well. If you're not a good writer then you may struggle with writing content that's engaging and interesting. Focus on your own strengths - be it writing, graphic design, speaking (videos are great for this) and hone your skills.
  6. Jame says:
Having learned SEO for 3 to 4 years, I believe that what you include in this post are best of the best long term and effective SEO and link building technique ever! Writing great content that people what to read, bookmark, share and link to is the heart of long term traffic and conversion while posting on relevant forum, comment and writing quest post is the best way to get relevant and authority links.
  7. Amit says:
I think Wordpress plugins and things like widgets are great ways to get backlinks. Not easy for everyone to do though but the payoffs are big. Yoast's Wordpress Sociable Plugin is one example - the plugin website (blogplay) has is a PR7 ! Another is Simply Hired (the job site), which created a widget that people could put on their websites.
  8. sai krishna says:
i mostly used commenting for link building.social media also a better way for link building
  9. Jonathan says:
Very useful and practical advice. I often spend time reading blogs where they say exactly what you mentioned about things like, “Create diversified link profiles and build high quality links'. It's easy to state the obvious but not so easy to actually go into detail about the practical' aspects. I find i sometimes spend to much time reading and not enough time doing.
  10. Saket Jajodia says:
Awesome post..!! Thanks a lot for this detailed post.. I hardly do 2-3 of them..
  11. shan ali says:
thanx for the article....these are the only scam free ways to link building....my blog is new and i m considering following all the above methods...do u think i can follow all 20 points at once...means is it possible
  12. Dan Boyle says:
I want to outsource link building (#19). How do you set up an agreement that will insure results? Do you base performance on links built? Seems like there are so many SEO scams out there.
  13. Mark says:
With respect to: 19. Hire a link builder - The above methods take a lot of time and expertise. Hiring someone with the knowledge to do it for you can be more effective than doing it yourself. I have to point out that there are services that will take your money and spam other websites to no end and call it link building. Always hire a reputable SEO firm or go with a recommendation. Definitely be cautious with this one. If I had to recommend somebody, I would probably recommend practicalseo.org. Either use Zac or somebody he recommends. Cheers, Zac! Mark
  14. Momma_Branam says:
Thanks for this post. I had no clue that I should be doing most of these things. I appreciate the help.
  15. jimmy says:
I use several of them, and they all give backlinks to what ever site it is I´m linking to. But the one that gives me the most and the fastest backlinks is free templates / themes.!
  16. arunii says:
My favorites are forum posting and guest blogging. Both works well !
  17. Amanda Gordon says:
A comprehensive list of link building tactics. There is one thing I would like to add - Article marketing. I am a big fan of article marketing. Before the panda and farmer update, I used to get a huge amount of traffic from the article directories. So they were good for both traffic and backlinks. After the Google algo update, the traffic has reduced a bit, but the backlinks still work. Sometimes, a single well written article can get 100s of backlinks due to syndication at multiple websites.
  18. Jarret says:
The one thing I've learned about building natural links is that people are far more likely to link to you if they like + know you. In the past, I created a Hybrid Child Theme which I released for free. It was a huge source of backlinks with one caveat--I changed themes and stopped supporting it. Eventually most of those links disappeared as people switched themes. I've also had this problem with some previous do follow social media sites that I used for link building--the sites shut down and the links disappear. Now, I really don't have time for link building, but my latest method has been to create a WidgetBox with a Yahoo Pipes feed for other blogs in our network. You can see it at my site. It should help other bloggers in my network get their posts indexed faster.
  19. Gabrielle says:
guest posts have two benefits. One is people clicking on the link back to your website - this one was useless for me. The other benefit is that Google notices a one way backlink from a popular blog back to your website.
  20. Extreme John says:
Great sum up Zac!! This post gives a wide range of tools to use for link building. Some I have already been familiar and some I think I have to do better. I have been blogging for almost five years but I admit I still have more to learn. Every time I learn something new, it just feels like I'm new to blogging. lol.
  21. Karan says:
I find free templates the best kinda link building strategy... 1. It gives us backlink from the homepage and thus from all the child pages present on the site. 2. It builds up our credibility as a resource and thus helps in branding.
  22. Dheeraj says:
A very Nice and to the point explanation. It really helps me to Know more link building strategies Thanks
  23. DJ Arif says:
Hi Zac, You've mentioned 20 link building methods for building links and getting backlinks, but which methods do you follow the most?
    • Zac says:
Hi Arif, this is an excellent question, glad you asked it :) I would say 4, 5, 6 and I'm trying to be number 15 :) Well, guest posting obviously works, but you need to have good content on your website and you need to offer quality content for it to work. Linking to others has gotten me some valuable links so far and is not an effort. Link bait, well, I try, got a few shots that got me some quality links, but this is a though nail to break, but again, worth the effort :)
  24. Sreejesh says:
Forum posting, commenting on other blogs and social bookmarking at some easy ways for link building, but guest blogging, WordPress plugins, Free themes need some more effort and time.
    • Zac says:
Guest blogging and the rest may take longer time, but quality without effort is a rare thing, so they are worth investing time into if you want to maximize your link building efforts!
      • Sreejesh says:
Yes, I do agree with you, but I meant making free themes is no all can do. Gues posting is possible.
        • Zac says:
Right, but there is always the option of outsourcing something. people tend to invest money into developing quality content and link building, so for those who have the budget this is still an option, they just have to find a good developer... but in the end it all comes down to a specter of our possibilities, what is more likely to happen and what won't.
          • Sreejesh says:
Yes, thats a good option when you are anyway planning to spend $$ on linkbuilding.
  25. Jayant says:
I think you have explained almost all the methods of taking back links. Bloggers will get advantage from reading this article. Although I don't link 1-2 ways to get backlink but you need to know this techniques as well.
    • Zac says:
Hi Jayant, thanks for the feedback, but I haven't even touched the surface of link building with this article, just vertical search is a new field of link building to consider and there are many more!
  26. Jason says:
Hi Zac, Thanks for the informative post. I was wondering which method do you feel is the most important for bloggers today? I know you have them listed 1-20 but I wasn't sure if that is the order of importance or not.
    • Zac says:
Hi Jason, there is no order of importance. Link building is test and burn thing, so you need to find which type of links work for you, for most bloggers guest posting is the number one choice of link building, but in the end you have to remember one thing, quality content matters both ways, you need to write something of quality as a guest post and your blog needs to offer quality in order to get links!
  27. Morgan Barnhart says:
Hi Zac, Personally, I don't recommend link exchanges anymore because to me, that really clutters up someones page, and it doesn't actually have any greater effect these days, as it did just 5 years ago, than simply adding your link to a link directory. It's about getting a link back, not so much about linking with others. You really named quite a few ideas to keep people busy with link building! Blog commenting is probably the strongest for not only link building, but also client referral. Great post!
    • Zac says:
Thanks for the comment and praise :) But, I really can't agree with your statements. I am a professional link builder, I do this for a living, so blog commenting is actually not that much worth for a link as it is for creating network of people and connecting with others, which can alternatively get you some solid links. As for link exchanges, they can be a great influence if you make only a few with high quality relevant sites, we are not talking about mass link exchange here! But all of that is already explained in the post... Any link building effort can be of great value, but only if you concentrate on the quality and the long term goal, that goes for both commenting and link exchanges :)
      • Morgan Barnhart says:
Do some research and you'll see that link exchange is dying out and has been for a while. I realize you do this for a living, but so do a lot of other people that have clearly said it's a waste of time. We'll have to agree to disagree. :) I do not believe that we have to try every single method in order to get links back. It needs to be targeted and it needs to not be spammy or use links that will take people away from your site (which is what we can agree on). Link exchange used to work in the old days, but it's just not a very effective way these days. I'm also going to have to disagree with you about blog commenting. For one of my sites, I used straight up blog commenting to do all of my marketing and link building and creating a HUGE mass of people to my website and a ton of referrals and clients and I also got on the first page of Google. That has also been stated by many other professionals in the industry. No matter what you do to build links, the fact remains that it must be targeted and it must be a constant effort. Cheers!
        • Zac says:
Totally agreed on the last part :) But you misunderstood me about the commenting part, I agree that comments are valuable, which is why I listed them in the post, but in my opinion and experience they are more valuable for bringing people over with direct traffic and getting new connections than they are for actual rankings. Maybe in low competition niches they can still work! As for link exchanges, I don't know any PRO SEO that said that link exchanges are a waste of time, including Rand, Tom or Greg Boser, they said the same thing I did, moderate highly relevant link exchanges have a great value and are not dying out. The reason link exchanges don't work is because people link blindly and mostly do reciprocal link exchanges. Like I said in the post, you can do 3-way or 4-way link exchanges, and how does that differ from a high quality one way link?
          • Zac says:
Here is a great reply from Justin Briggs about link exchanges, maybe you will see an eye to eye than, he explains it in a great way: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/what-are-your-best-tips-for-link-builders#jtc128538
  28. Johanna says:
Hi Zarko, Great list of linkbuilding methods! I haven't done everything in your list yet. I think I have to work more on this. Thanks for sharing! :)
    • Zac says:
Thanks Johanna, just take it slow, create your link building plan and stick to it. After a while, measure your results and tweak accordingly.
  29. Alaister says:
Great post and awesome link building strategies. One of the most labor intensive and time consuming SEO tasks is link building. This is a really comprehensive list and you have shown that it can take an entire team to build out a strong link building campaign.
    • Zac says:
yeah, sometimes it can take an entire team to run a link building campaign and sometimes a single person can do it with carefully laid out link building plan :)
  30. Vijayraj Reddy says:
After panda update i doubt social bookmarking will be good or bad for your blog? because bookmarking will have same title and summary of your blog which may caught as duplicate content... any idea?
    • Zac says:
Bookmarking can never be seen as duplicate content, I've never heard of anything like it. If you copy a few lines from the text and link back to the original article that is attribution, citation, and it is obvious why, so no search engine will ever see that as duplicate content even without the link back! And the first part, bookmarks help you get your site indexed faster, and of course, since most bookmarks are no follow, if you count out the users and Google, there are always Bing and Yahoo, they follow all links and we should never forget about them :)
  31. Tony says:
Blog comment also a good way to building backlinks, especially with commentluv and keywordluv.
  32. TJ McDowell says:
In my opinion, link exchanges end up being a waste of time. I actually just wrote an article on my blog on that topic - http://www.larissaphotography.com/blog/2011/05/seo-for-photographers-link-exchanges/ The bottom line for me with link exchanges is that they have to actually work outside of just thinking about building a link. The link has to make sense in the context that it's placed on the other site.
    • Zac says:
Hi TJ, your first and second statement don't support each other, don't they :) Well I read your post and I know what you mean, I agree, link exchange has to make sense and has to bring quality, like you said, if you are doing it just to get a link, than it will be worthless. But if your websites are a good match and you see a reason for cross linking than you should go for it :)
      • TJ McDowell says:
Zac, I could see how my 2 statements could look like they disagree with each other. From what I've seen, almost nobody advocating link exchanges actually follows the conditions of making sure the link adds value to the website. So with that in mind, I never recommend link exchanges as a good option for SEO. Thanks for the great comment reply, and thanks for dropping by my blog to comment!
        • Zac says:
Right TJ, most people fail to use link exchanges in the right way and simply go for the link, so yeah, if you aren't going to do it right the best bet is to stay away from it at all, but that can be said for any of the other 19 linking methods described here and all the rest I've skipped!
  33. Lee Ka Hoong says:
Zarko you have a great list of link building strategies here. I totally agree with you especially guest posting because it doesn't send you backlinks, but traffic as well, and build your brand indirectly. Anyway, you should actually build backlinks from several sources as Google loves to see different kind of backlinks linking to your site, then probably you rank higher easily. Nice post Zarko! Regards, Lee Ka Hoong
    • Zac says:
Hi Lee, well, actually my last post talks about link diversity and how it helps with your sites ranking :)
  34. Rakesh Kumar says:
I was thinking that Blog Commenting is only the one way to build links but i was wrong. Thanks Zac to show other ways.
    • Zac says:
Hi Rakesh, There are plenty of great resources to learn about link building, for starters SEOmoz, there are also plenty of other SEO blogs where you can learn about link building. You should read them and work a bit on your link diversity.
  35. Delena Silverfox says:
Free templates. I had never considered that, but I'm not too good at my own designing. However, I've noticed a lot of bloggers offering either help with themes like Thesis, or offering their own, so it can't be too difficult, right? =) Delena
    • Zac says:
Hi Delena, If you look at Nasif's example you will see that he had a few issues with his templates, the fact is, if you create a pure business template there is a slim chance someone will use it for porn, so when you create templates you need to invest in them. Like ebooks, no one pays attention to free ebooks unless they are from a known author or really offer something amazing. A few years back all we needed was a good looking template and people were hooked, today people look for usability when looking for WP themes. So besides CSS, which is the easy part, you need to know your PHP quite well if you want to make it yourself. the alternative is to pay someone to make it for you, and most of the times that is the best solution.
  36. Rob says:
Hey Zac, Thanks for the pointers. I have 2 questions. 1) Would you revise any of these if it were for a review site (not a blog)? For the review site we've been tweeting, YouTubing, and commenting for links (including forums related to) . 2) Similar to Nasif, I have had links coming from all over, mainly overseas. Sites that I have never been to and are not my 'cup of tea'. Can this hurt me as far as Google rankings? How do I stop this? Thanks so much.
    • Zac says:
Hi Rob, 1) yes, sure, why not... 2) There are two schools on the question if these links can hurt you. The first one says that you cannot control the links coming to your site therefor can't be held responsible, but it's not as simple as that. The thing is that they will not hurt your rankings, in theory that is, this is something you have to monitor. I would suggest that you start a link consolidation campaign right off the bat. Find all the backlinks to your site, investigate why sites you don't like link to you, remove that which makes them link or enhance the links by asking the webmasters to change the anchor texts. Like I suggested to Nasif, you can find partner sites that would benefit from those links and try to redirect them and you can ask the "partners" to link to your from their domains you like. You can use blog networking circles for that like blokube, bloggers and such, wouldn't recommend forums if you are not that good at identifying network sites.
  37. AJ Clarke says:
Lots of great stuff here Zac. You make it sound so easy...but link-building can be quite difficult. Personally I think the most important thing (as Matt Cutts always says) is to provide "real" value to your visitors and people will link back to you naturally. Not only will you get back-links from people within your niche (because these are the ones interested in your content) but they will also be in-line links. Cheers!
    • Zac says:
Hi AJ, you are right and I always tell people to go for quality, gaining links the natural way is the best way, but in this competitive market it is very hard to prosper that way. i know link building can be hard, and my mistake of making it sound easy comes from the fact that this is my job, I work as an SEO strategist and link builder 24/7, so the bottom line is, it only takes practice like everything else.
  38. Prasenjit says:
All the points mentioned are mentioned everywhere and the most amazing thing is that it never gets old. In fact these are proven methods for a successful link building campaign. Thanks Zac for reminding us all these age old link building tricks.
    • Zac says:
Hi Prasenjit, yeah, they are old aren't they, just the issue of people not using them correctly is there and the fact that new bloggers tend to read more blogs like Famous Bloggers than SEOmoz, so they will read it here first. I reminded some of you about the actual worth of link building and how to use these methods, as most people don't use them the way they should, and I gave a few good starting points for the beginners. As long as there are newbies and people that tend to twist the few straightforward things we got going with SEO and link building you can expect to see posts like these.

Zac, A good list of places to build links. I know that Google likes to see links from a variety of places. The bit of information you added in social bookmarking was of help. I know that I've been bookmarking all of my posts, but I've never seen any backlinks as a result of it. I guess I'm going to have to get a little more active in those accounts. Thanks.Oh, by the way, I see that this was your first article here...hope to see more from you.
    • Zac says:
Hi Jhoe, bookmarking has a benefit to it, but people tend to forget the obvious, they fall under social networks, and people use them to create backlinks without the socializing part, so they tend to get nothing in return. And yeah, i will definitely write more for Famous Bloggers, plenty of great feedback, love the questions and love the benefits :)
  40. Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Just one question, you see I had been using entrecard widget for a long time, so I did like to ask... does it boost my site SEO?
    • Zac says:
Hi Wong, well, i never actually used the Entercard widget, but I heard of it and have seen it. My guess is that most people have the same issue, it increases the traffic but at the same time it increases the bounce rate, so not much point to it. I guess that if you want to make something out of it you have to work on it, the same like social media, you need to engage in order to get something back, in my opinion there are plenty of other networking ways much simpler that can get you better results.
      • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes, Entrecard need to work on it, but I had been using it since I started blogging years back, I have never put it off, as I had knew quite a few good online friends from other niches, and one person from our marketing world that actually uses Entrecard with great traffic success, I'm not sure you know, but here's the blog "theadmaster.net" Oh, and thanks for your quick reply.
        • Zac says:
Like I said, it can work, it just needs certain amount of effort to work, that goes for any type of website promotion.
  41. James says:
Zac, I do use combination of link building methods but still I am not aware which link building method is more effective and more inpact from Google point of view. I know getting backlinks from Top Level Domains(TLDs) had high impact but it is very difficult too. Advice on the same.
    • Zac says:
Hi James, some things never change, so the idea is practically the same before the panda update, people just paid less attention to it before they get hit. Quality content matter, at last what Google thinks quality content is when it comes to building links. You shouldn't worry too much about TLD's, what you should look for when building links are signs of authority and trust, like relevance, rankings, link profile, more diversified links with other quality sites linking in. When you find a site like that it is very easy to know that a link from that site is worth the effort, so what type of link is worth in Google's eyes. I would have to say in-content links are their top priority, also, higher the position of the link on the page the better. But getting just one type of link is not going to work well, so you need to mix it up, after all, your link profile needs to look as natural as possible and you will get there. With every link building campaign we do we try to get as diversified links as much as possible, and it works, faster than you can imagine.
  42. Darlene says:
Great list Zac! I think many people struggle with how to do this well so they just say "forget it". It's something that needs to be done over a period of time with consistent effort.
    • Zac says:
Right on Darlene, too many people get confused over small stuff and info from various sources, trusted or not. the thing is that online success does depend on how you market your website, and if you want to make sure that your traffic levels are up the best way is to aim for organic traffic, and proper link building strategy will help you with that.

I'm writing a simple wordpress plugin for every site I build, it gets a powerfull link and a lot of visitors.

  45. Peter Lawlor says:
Sponsoring a cause is a great idea. I actually noticed a competitor of my offline business did this. The charity plastered my competitor all over the charity website in the sidebar which provided dofollow links from every page. It gave my competitor a nice bump in the SERPs.
    • Zac says:
Hi Peter, yeah, I've seen it happen and I used the strategy a few times for certain clients that can afford that type of advertising. By doing a charity you are not just getting a link, in most cases you are getting a link from a very trusted and authoritative website as well as spreading a good word for your company, so you have both link building covered and reputation management, all in one. And if you own a company, reputation management is very important, especially for your online presence.

  47. Zac says:
Hi Moosa, thank you for the kind words, I just think that these will give people ideas, and the best link building tool we have is our own creativity, so this will hopefully get people started with link building :)
  48. Zac says:
Hi Moosa, thanks for the kind words, I really think this will give people ideas where to start and what to focus on. there is always more, I always say that the greatest link building tool is our own creativity, so be creative, this is just an idea pool :)
    • Zac says:
hehe, I'm a spammer, spamming my own guest post :) My browser crashed and I got two for one comment deal going on here...
  49. Vijayraj Reddy says:
I follow blog commenting, forum posting and guest posting, some times social bookmarking... But after Google panda do you know which is better in terms of SEO?
    • Zac says:
Hi Vijayraj, well after Panda everything has turned to links comming from quality content, so I would say from the ones you mentioned that guest posting is the best possible way to get links. If you put an extra effort and create a really good guest post that will bring traffic on it's own you have nothing to worry about the quality, it will obvious be there. So don't save the words and go for 300 word guest posts, but don't fill it with fluff, give it what you've got and you can see that only a few such links can make a difference in your rankings.
  50. Atulperx says:
Video Marketing is also a good tool for link building and grabbing others attention. You can notice many small image presentations on youtube or other websites where users are just posting images and Links in description area. Website like youtube get ranked easily on top for less competitive keywords and drive you good traffic and links too , if you presentation is good enough.
    • Zac says:
Good point, that it what it boils down to, quality, no matter the type of promotion or link. Google has been talking about rankings quality websites for a long time, I think this is the one major quality control update we have been waiting for, and I'm sure there will be many more. So videos, guest posts, giveaways or anything else, if it has quality, if it is interesting, if people want something like that, it will surely work for you.

You have done it agian Great point. see you at Round Up.
    • Zac says:
Hi Gary, thanks :) You said it good, although these are good tips to build links, the ones you mentioned are one of the most important ones. I suggest engaging people through social media as it is the best way to make people pay attention, the easiest and fastest, and more and more people will turn to social media with time... see you at Round Up :)
  52. Brankica says:
Zarko, svaka ti cast, razbio si ga.For those that don't understand the previous sentence explanation: Like I didn't have anything to do over the weekend, now you throw this on me. And you know I can't just leave it for later. Man, you are so mean ;)Well, I just wanna say I am using pretty much 95% of these, but I will have to re-do my strategy and do more of the things I don't do enough!
    • Zac says:
Hvala Brankice :) Really, it means a lot coming from you, so thanks again :) I know you are a hard working girl, and so far you are doing great, but you have a point, focusing on the things we tend to neglect can make a great difference sometimes.
  53. Nasif says:
I will not recommend points number 9 "Free Templates" ! I sponsored some wordpress themes on digital point forum and later I found that I got many backlink from porn sites ! Those sponsored themes were used to make porn sites :@ grrrrr
    • Brankica says:
I am sorry but I actually laughed at this Nasif, not in a bad way, but just can't believe that happens. Now that I think about it, it is so logical!Well, I will know not to do it :)
      • Zac says:
Hi Nasif, sorry to hear you burn yourself like that, however, the quality of the template and the design may be the reason why they used it for porn, just a guess. Also, there are many places to submit your templates and get plenty of mileage for them, so forums can be skipped these days for that sort of thing. Lastly, there is always link consolidation, you could have asked them to remove the links from the footer or send them a complimentary free theme without the links, or in my book I would try to point those links to relevant sites and that way get some partners going for me. You see it is a point of perspective, you can leverage even those kinds of links to get something positive going for you :)
        • Nasif says:
Thanks for the suggestion Zac :)
          • Rob says:
Hey Zac, Same problem as Nasif, except I never offered a template. Sites are linking to me that I've never been to. Mainly overseas (gambling, porn). These sites aren't my cup of tea and wondering if Google will punish my site? Also, do you recommend similar strategies even if it is a review site? It is a piano lesson review site. We comment on forums and other sites, tweet, Facebook, and YouTube. Any single suggestion that we can implement? Thanks so much.
            • Zac says:
Well the question you need to ask and find an answer to is why gambling and porn sites would link to a piano lesson review site? What is their common denominator, there must be something, if not templates. Check into that and you will probably find a solution to your problem. Maybe you bought an existing domain that used to be something else, did some link exchanges?
  54. Suresh Khanal says:
Well, you did not miss any of the methods for link building. Awesome and made it obvious that link building is not one man's job. I need to look for somebody to share my hand if I wish to apply all of these methods.
    • Zac says:
Hi Suresh, link building can be overwhelming sometimes, but it doesn't have to be. Unless you have a great number of sites or you have a massive eCommerce like site, there is no need to get extra help. take it slow and concentrate on acquiring quality links, the type of links that will drive traffic and get you ranks at the same time.
      • Suresh Khanal says:
Thank you Zac. You did not mention the link trades as there are some services like teliad and so on. If you are working in a very competitive niche and you have some big site, hope this is also what you need to consider?
        • Zac says:
yeah it is something to consider, but you should always be careful with those sites. Not using them personally, but have nothing against them, you just need to be sure what you are getting in return...
  55. Moosa Hemani says:
