How to Write Persuasive Content?

September 26, 2010 - Last Modified: September 26, 2010 by Jeevan Jacob John

Persuasive Content

The purpose of this article is to help you blogging. This article may include things that yo are familiar/not familiar with.

Learn From Others

When you visit other people’s blog, try to evaluate their blog – What attracts you most ? Is it the content ? Is it the design ? Is it the use of Grammar/Language ? Try not to apply it to your blog. You heard me – Not. What I really what to say is that you must have something unique about your blog – that other blogs don’t have – May it be your writing style, may it be anything. If you find any common elements between your blog and your competitor’s, change that element (If its the theme, you don’t have it to change it necessarily).

Along with this I have to say that “Don’t copy”. No, I am not talking about plagarism. I am talking about the elements. Let memake it clear, what I mean by elements : Elements include Writing style, Use of Langauge, Placement of Ads (Yes, it does matter) etc. Don’t ever try to copy a so-called “Pro-blogger”. If you do, it will be a big mistake.

Be Yourself

Don’t be someone else. Be Yourself. Apply your elements to your blog. Everyone one of us has unique elements/Talents/abilites. Apply those elements to your blog. May it be your language, writing style. Most Bloggers always tell you to “Be Yourself”. I agree with them. BE YOURSELF. Don’t be in multiple roles unless you have Multiple Personality Disorder ๐Ÿ˜‰

Talk to Your Visitors

Rather than Just writing, talk to your visitors through your blog post. Think about this scenerio : How do the advertisers in the TV make use of this tool ? They use nouns like “You” to get your attention (I am using it right now ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). Example : Let’s imagine that your friend is your visitor. And you are going to tell your article to your friend. How would you tell him/her ? Think about it. Apply the elements to your article. Talk to your readers as though you were talking to your close friend. Use simple language. Use simple language in a diferrent way to persuade your readers ๐Ÿ˜‰

Write Persuasively

Write attractive headlines. Write attractive body lines. Write attractive Conclusions. My advise about writing attractive headlines : Write Your Title after Your write Your Post. For Body lines: Decide what to write even before you write it. Conclusion: After you have decided on what to write, think what you are trying to accomplish, think about your goal. By Writing Persuasively, I do mean that You have to use your literary devices you learned in school. Use rhetoric questions, use GRAMMAR, Use LANGUAGE. Don’t tell me that you can’t write persuasively – Because I won’t accept it – Each of us have written atleast an essay for our English Class (Hopefully !).

Another thing to Remember

Before you actually write your post (that if after you think about what you are going to write on), think about “How one can persuade you?” (Persuade you on the article you are planning to write on). After you find your answer, apply that to your post. I ensure you. It will work if you use it well.

Write Your Thoughts

Simply, write what you think about. At this minute, you have 1000s of thoughts going on in your brain. The only difference is that You are focusing on reading this article (I hope ;)) ). Most of what I write in this post is what comes to my mind at that second. I am just writing and writing and writing. You may not get a good post at the first time. But that’s ok. Many writers from Great to small wrote “bad” drafts. Then, they edit it. Editing it will help. Edit your article after you write it. (Just like the essays you wrote in your school). Draft and Final Draft.

Think what you write about

Look at your older posts. Read them like a reader would. Evaluate your posts. Write down that things that comes to your mind after you read your old post. You can use the list to help you with writing your next Article.

Learn From Yourself

By the way, this is almost the same as the above one. Learn from your tweets. Add to your older posts. Write continuing posts. Extrapolate your ideas. Think beyond what you have written. Frame a post based on the thoughts.

Use Social Networking as a Tool

Use Twitter, Facebook, Blogengage, MMO social network site and other forums to expand your vocabulary on Blogging. Use the expansion to frame new and new article. Combine old ideas with new ones. Add your ideas to the old known ideas. Use Social Networking to frame your ideas.

Conclusion

I hope that my article will help you to blog. If it does, please let me know. I will be happy to know that I have achieved my goal. Use the above to your blogging success. If you use it well, you may go beyond a Pro-blogger. I wish you all success.

What do you think about My Article ? Let me know of your opinion. I wish you all the Best on your Blogging Career !

Don't forget proofreading. Content with more than one or two noticeable typos isn't very persuasive to me.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks for reminding that @Jason. Proof reading surely is important. Thanks for the comment !

  8. Suresh Khanal says:
Writing a good headline certainly has greater impact. I have a recent incident. The post was about advertising and pageRank. I titled it 'Do Advertising Improve PageRank'. It was OK, not much as expected. Doing business without advertisement is winking at a girl in dark. So I changed the title in blogengage 'Are you winking at a girl in dark?' - the response is far better. Now I'm going to change the title for my post too!
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
That's a great decision you took, Suresh. I love that title. It makes me curious. All the best. The decisions shows you how important the titles are. Thanks for the comment.
  9. Cindy says:
great tips, Jeevan :) uniqueness is the key and you dont have to worry too much whether or not the idea doesnt sell... its up to you to start the trend.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks @Cindy. That's right, Uniqueness is the key. Never fear failures ; if you do, then you won't make anything out of blogging. Thanks for the commment.
  10. Caleb says:
Another tip is to think to a time when you were persuaded to do something and exactly what words and phrases did the persuading
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
That's a good tip. I will sure try that. Thanks for the comment @Caleb
  11. suraj says:
Nice tips Jeevan. Blogging has became competitive. To survive in this world we must become unique and provide something valuable. I also prefer to concentrate on social media to promote our blogs because they have very good potential.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks @Suraj. Quality content and Promotion are the most important things related to blogging success. I wish you all the best !
  12. Phil says:
I think I have a weak side when it comes to writing attractive titles for my articles. Need to give them more thought. Thanks for the interesting and helpful article!
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks and Welcome @Phil Attractive titles. What I do is I think on it, research and look at different titles (I want my own title). Then I write a Title. ;)
  13. TJ McDowell says:
So it sounds like when looking at other blogs, you're looking for the types of things they do that make an impact, and you're hoping to use them as inspiration to do the same type of thing with your own flavor. Is that basically what you're saying?
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Yes. That's one part of it. The other one is that you add them and make it your own (Make it our own flavor). You own style. You own DNA ! Thanks for the comment @TJ
  14. Colleen says:
Very good Jeevan. All points to not only be persuasive in blogging, but life in general! :)
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks @Colleen. Persuasiveness - Your mind decides it when we are reading an article. Thanks for the comment.
  15. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Jeevan, A heavy article, many important points for everybody who want to be big in the blogging world. I have read this post 5-6 times already and find new things to think about every time.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks ! Thanks for reading my article many times. Thanks for the comment @Lennart
  16. Tinh says:
Another thing that you need to know is the logics of the article, it is very important to keep readers going from the beginning to the end. I love outlining what to write about first and then complete it. Great idea!
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks for the comment @Tinh Most of the articles I write are without any outline. What I do is decide the Title first. Then write about the title (Example : Anwer it if the title is a question) Thanks !
  17. Pumama says:
Reading Book is the other factor to write persuasive. Reading Book makes you more knowledge and learn writing skill from diferent authors.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Reading Books would sure help in developing yours own writing style. Thanks for the comment Pumama
  18. The Bad Blogger says:
Being unique is one good thing, I'm not sure whether I'm the only blogger who writes like a letter and.. also who writes marketing and sex both in one blog, but I do know is very hard to find another kind of blogger like me in the blogging sphere. Well... as far as I'm concern, writing good headlines does make some different in whether or not your content get read. Here's a tip that might help someone of you here... if you are running out of good headline... always start your headline with "How To" this is by far the best way to start any headline for the last 30 years or so in history. And here's another tip that might help someone of you... if you are running out of sentence to start your content... always use "If... then..." for example... "If you want to write persuasive content then this will be the most exciting post you will ever read. Here's why..." and from there you can go on with your content. Peace...
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I am sure that someone else might be writing like you. Thanks for the tips @theBadblogger. Thanks for the comment !
  19. Technocian says:
Yes, to start with the things, you need to follow your favorite bloggers and see there writing skill, there way of writing, what topic they choose, what they focus on. You can get the inspiration from such bloggers and then mix your talent on how to write on your subject. Well I must admit that it comes by experience only and you have to wait very long in order to success in this industry. If you have patience, you can start with this. Your article is a must read for new blogger.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Patience is the key. I do agree with you that you have to follow your favorite bloggers but I would suggest you to have your own writing style. Mixing might be a good solution ; I am not sure. But I am sure that unique writing style is a must-have. Thanks for the comment @Technocian !
  20. Pritam says:
Well said Jeevan. There comes many problems for new blogger when they start a blog. The biggest one is writing and even if one is some good at writing he/she may face what to write on daily basis. New bloggers always face this situation and they try to copy from here and there. But this is not the solutions. Many bloggers like this start with great enthu but stop the blog in between. This will inspire such people.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
What to write ? That's a big question. I face it everytime I blog. What I do is, search through my mind and if I don't find anything, I will go look on my older articles and extend or add information to them. Sometimes, just a sentence can give us a good idea about what to write. I agree with you. New bloggers make a big mistkae by copying articles from here and there. I also agree with you that many (and many) bloggers decide to end their blogging career just because they can't write any new content. Thanks for the comment @Pritam
  21. ZK says:
I just glued to the photo which you used ... now reading article.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Ho, I didn't add that photo, Hesham did. He has great creativity. Thanks for the comment @ZK
  22. Biodun says:
Good points, you should be yourself and write for your visitors. A good writer should know who he is writing for, that will make him to know what to write and how to put it down.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
@Biodun Thanks. Being yourself will help you a lot in blogging. Thanks for the comment.
  23. Kevin Martineau says:
Great tips! The one that resonated with me the most is: be yourself. I know too many bloggers who are trying to be someone who they aren't. It is important to discover your writing style and go for it!
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
@Kevin, Thanks for the comment. Yeah, many bloggers are trying to imitate others rather than being themselves. People hate it when they do that (I know that I do).
  24. Murlu says:
All of these are what actually keeps me coming back time and time again; if a blogger doesn't have their own voice it just seems like passable content. Sure, I want to learn something new but I also want to hear it from YOU, not how well you can recite lines - I want your personality in every post, not just the details. You really nailed it Jeevan, you get exactly what I'm thinking when I land on a blog :)
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I agree with you, Murlu. Each and every person in this world has their own personality. So when everyone applies their personality to their blog, we will have many different, unique blog. Thanks for the comment @Murlu
  25. Mike says:
I think you should show some credibility as well..like if you hear from an expert who has been in industry for many years and receive numerous awards, his voice surely has more weight than a strange person, isn't it?
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I agree with you but my opinion is different . A person who has recieved lot of awards might be resourceful but I believe a newbie has the capability to create new ideas since he is not restricted to thinking. What I mean is, when we earn experience, we draw restrictions in our mind (Unconsciously). And we do things related to that experience, we do it within our restrcitions. To a newbie, their are no restrictions to thinking. They can think to a whole new extent. So a newbie is sure useful, so is an experienced person.
  26. Kimi says:
Great post John! In my case, i am trying to be unique and different than others, but of course it needs time to see the result. Very helpful for newbies who wants to start blogging. Thanks!
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks @Kimi Yeah, you need time to achieve everything ; Patience is the key. Wait for it, and you will see the results. Weleome ! Thanks for the comment.
  27. AJ says:
I think being yourself is you probably the most important thing. If you come across as a "real" person people are going to be a lot more likely to listen to what you have to say and take you seriously.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Being Yourself is the key. You are different from other. So when bloggers apply that to their blog, we will have a whole lot of unique blogs.
  28. Steve says:
Jeevan, For being a "newbie" as you say in your bio you make a lot of sense with your statements. All of them are very important elements to success. I always love to see hard working, go getting young guys like you out there "tearing it up" Keep it up. I look forward to hearing more from you.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thank You @Steve. Thanks a lot. Thank you for the comments. I hope that I can write more.
