Why Guest Blogging is NOT Working for my Awesome Blog

May 14, 2010 - Last Modified: April 23, 2011 by Hesham Zebida 1,786

How to blog

Today I have received a good question through Twitter from @AdesignStory “What should one do when the invited guest bloggers who agreed to be a part, decide to just stop responding?”, I love questions because it help me to write, it’s actually the most source of inspiration I can get from bloggers.

After I reply to that question on Twitter, I had to run to do some offline stuff, and the good thing is I didn’t have to drive, so my hands was free and I had the chance to write a few points to save them till I get back to my laptop, so.. basically this post was planned on the go.

While I can not resist thinking of the question, I realized that answering it by typing 140 characters is not enough, so let’s start with some general experience that I had while dealing with daily guest posts and bloggers.

Get ready because this post is not a short one, some time things goes out of my control, so … I will try my best not to waste your time!

Guest Blogging: Three Types of Bloggers

To make it more simple to understand, I think we need to classify bloggers by three types regarding to guest blogging:

  • 1- Bloggers who do guest post on other blogs
  • 2- Bloggers who accept & actually receive guest posts from others
  • 3- Bloggers who do both

I have wrote a few guest posts myself, but I have discovered that I am not from that group some how, basically because I am really busy with dealing with bloggers from the second type everyday, so I don’t find enough time to guest post on other blogs, I prefer to work on my projects as much as I can trying to serve the community, this is also a big reason why I am not participating on guest blogging contests, I really love the challenge, but I just can’t do it, so… for me, being one of the second type is ideal, I think everyone should know himself before making any commitments to other bloggers as this will make them feel really disappointed if you don’t write for their blogs!

I will not talk more about Bloggers types, I think you got the point, so I am going to jump!

Why Guest blogging is not working for my blog?

This is a fact, I deal with guest posts everyday since I started this blog, I must say it wasn’t an easy job to attract bloggers to write on FamousBloggers, and it’s not easy to attract them to write again and again for the same blog, but I have gained that experience for sure, and I am going to share with you the best of what I have learned, so let’s go more deeper into the topic!

There are very important questions you should ask yourself before telling the world that you accept guest posting on your blog and start invite bloggers:

  • 1- Do I have the right design?
  • 2- Is my guidelines page clear enough?
  • 3- How to make it easier for bloggers to submit their articles?
  • 4- Do I have a strong and active community around my blog?
  • 5- What I should do after publishing an article?
  • 6- How I will protect Bloggers who writes on my blog?

I can NOT imagine success in guest blogging for any blog with out having at least a few of these basics, so let’s expand these points to make sure we understand the whole thing!

1- Blog Design: Is your Blog Ready?

Basically FamousBloggers is different from any other personal blog, it was planned and designed to be a multi-authors blog, so wasn’t a personal blog that I opened for guest posting, and here is why so many bloggers fail to do it, simply the reason is they didn’t plan their blogs to accept others to write with them since the beginning, so… some how they are not successfully attracting bloggers, it’s like inviting someone to the wrong place, and this is why most of you will get disappointed when they don’t get respond from others!

Let me show you a few basic elements and enhancements we have added to FamousBloggers in the last 7 months of blogging

  • The Blog Domain Name

Famous-Bloggers-Logo

One of the basic element of FamousBloggers success is the domain name, which attracted so many bloggers, and also open a few hard to open doors, for example I don’t have any problem to get this blog accepted by web directories and advertising services because it gained credibility and trust much faster than any personal blog I have seen. I think now you start to get the idea, and you understand why you should plan your blog to do the job you have created to it!

  • Basic Blog Design and Layout

famous-bloggers-design

Talking about the right blog design is my favorite topic, probably because I am a web designer and I have invested a lot of time designing and redesigning this blog trying to give it a good shape and keep it simple!

  • Author page

Famous Bloggers Author Page Design

Realizing that most of the “author pages” on FamousBloggers has a PageRank, especially those who created their accounts earlier and started to write for famousBloggers before the last Google PageRank update, we was thinking about the best ways to award them, we allow our bloggers to add a like or two to their profile Bio, but those links was showing only under their posts, now we have added a special code to customize our authors pages, although it’s not working 100% for everyone yet, but it’s a great way to get extra backlinks from our blog especially when author pages got a PR of 2 or 3 as many of our bloggers has.

And here is a link to an awesome post of mine talking about how to customize Thesis Themes author page.

  • Bio and fields

contact-info

We have removed the defaults, and added two fields to the profile, so now you can go a head and edit your profile, add your Twitter and Facebook to it, note that for Twitter you don’t need to add the full URL, just add “@” and your ID!

  • Customized Login page

Custom WordPress Login Page

Thanks to Mia, I have found her post useful to follow and she leaded me to get a customized WordPress log-in page in a few minutes, I am no longer having the usual WordPress login page.

  • Author box

Wordpress Author Box

This is a nice add, James has the code on his blog post How to add author Bio box without a plugin, if you want to grab it, it’s the same author box code we are using exactly, you just need to teak it a little to fit your blog.

  • Author avatar

By having a Gravatar.com account, your avatar image will show next to title of your post on home page and the post page, this is what other blogs are missing!

  • Take Twitter Anywhere

We have managed to add Twitter @anywhere to our blog, we believe in Twitter and want to get the most of it without losing our blog visitors/readers, so they actually don’t have to take off the blog to follow someone on Twitter anymore!

  • Twitter Box as a communicating tool

And they can contact us on Twitter On-Page as well as send any feedback, or ask a question, I love that, and this is how the can inspire us, and writing a post like this one is how we try to respond!

  • Buttons & Badges

Famous Bloggers author badgeWe have designed a few badges for our authors, and also some banners for those who would like to support us, it’s highly recommended that you add the badge anywhere to your blog and link it to your author page, check out Kikolani.com‘s sidebar, Kristi Hines is one of our blog team and she have done the right thing to promote her author and profiles pages of blog she writes for, although you don’t have to do it, we only recommend things that could help us both, and you are completely free to follow the advice or to do whatever you think is good for you!

This was a general review of a few customizations we have made to serve our bloggers the best way, we will not stop developing this blog, so when ever we have a chance you will see something new that you will really like!

2 – Do you have a “submit your article” page?

I can not tell you how much this page is important for us, but you probably notice that we have added an image button linking to it in our sidebar and also on the top navigation menu, I think we should make a statues for this page 🙂 it’s the most visited page on this blog after the about us page, make sure to have one, and make your guidelines clear to everyone!

3 – How easy it is to submit a Guest Post to your Blog?

Many bloggers will not give a chance for others to register to their blogs thinking why they will have account for those who guest blog once, but for us we have a completely different way of thinking, we want you to have the most of our blog, I think you got the point, and yes… registering to our blog will give you more benefits as you will get a powerful author page!

It’s absolutely easy for any blogger to use our dashboard to submit his/her article as we believe that most of you are familiar with WordPress, so it’s not a very complicated math, and for us we don’t need you to do anything more than write your awesome article and submit it for review, we do all the dirty work that you don’t want to do, we will structure the post by adding heading, thumbnail images, other images if needed, edit the title when needed and customize your article for SEO, then we promote it trying to give you the exposure you deserve, it’s kind of 5 star treatment 🙂

4 – Having a Strong and Active Blog Community

This is a must, if you want to successfully attract bloggers to write for your blog, then you must already have a powerful community around your blog, they must see that you actually going to give them exposure and gain readers to their blogs, this is after all why they are blogging for your blog, and this is what bloggers need to feel while guest blogging for you, and when they taste the sweet of guest blogging for your blog, they will come back over and over, and this is how you to shine your brand in the guest blogging world!

5 – What after publishing article?

The is the fun part, if Kristi Hines told us why we should socially promote articles we comment on, then I want to add that guest bloggers should socially promote their guest posts and reply to all comments, exactly like I did with my guest post about How to Manage Busy Social Networking Life with Multiple Projects at Hand, also multi-authors blog owners are required to heavily promote each post published on their blogs, this is how it works!

6 – Is my Blog safe for guest posting?

Most guest bloggers won’t write for your blog if they had a feeling that your blog will disappear one day, they want to make sure 100% that they won’t lose their precious content one day, they want to make sure that content are safe on your blog, this is why you should really put attention to protect content of your blog and your reputation while accepting guest posting, so… basically you need to:

  • Have a good plan and talk about it to share it with others
  • Host your blog with a reputable hosting company
  • Backup all the work on daily basis
  • Solve problems fast and respond to your bloggers
  • Never stop the development process on your blog

Check out these awesome Multi-Authors Blogs

I have added to you a few links for Multi-Authors blogs that I personally admire their work, take a few minutes to check out their different pages, how they structure the blog and how they highlight authors, there is lots to learn, so… Try to learn something “good” today!

Conclusion

To be able to get the most success while publishing posts written by other bloggers on your blog, you must have planned and designed your blog to so the job.

We all know that guest posting has lots of benefits, but so many bloggers still don’t know how to boost guest blogging success, and they should focus more on writing high quality guest posts, I mean try to forget about link building for a moment and think more a head, just write a very good post to get as much exposure as you can, try to think that you are introducing yourself to a new blog community, you really need to be in a good shape while meeting new people!

I hope you will find this post useful and you will able to share a few thoughts in the comments

Excellent post. It just shows that results will increase with preparation. I have found different uses of guest posting. The use best I have found is for product launches and releases. Guest blogging can work long term if you write a post that hits it out of the part and stays in the top read for months and months. Seems like it works better for short term results though.
  2. Mark says:
I would like to make a recommendation, Hesham. If a blogger wants to upgrade their site from a single blogger blog to a multi-blogger blog but doesn't want to open up the blog itself to registers, they can simply use the "uCan Post" plugin for wordpress. I use it and love it. It is well laid out and all you have to do is install the plugin and drop the identifier [uCan-Post] on the page you create as your "Guest Post Submission" page. You can see it here in action: http://thebitbot.com/submit-post/ I love it. Oh, by the way. Thanks for the pointers...:) Mark
    • Hesham says:
That's cool Mark, But I prefer to signup bloggers because their info will show automatically in the author box, also this will create a special author page for each of them and allow them to get notifications when they got comments and stuff like that, which will not be possible by submitting without register!
  3. Barbara Ling, Virtual Coach says:
I cannot believe I missed out on commenting on this excellent post earlier! Love the idea regarding the customizations; it really does make your blog stand out from the rest. I recently found a plugin that allows for people to submit guest posts (TDO form) and will be implementing that on me site for 2011.
  4. Sheila Atwood says:
Hesham, I think the blog community is the most important part to keeping guest bloggers. I noticed that you are part of blogengage.com, Technshare, SERPed and MMO. What a great way to broaden you community reach and support your guest bloggers.
  5. Justin Germino says:
As a blog that turned into a multi author blog I am still having trouble getting some writers to commit to the minimum posting schedule I have listed to be a "writer" instead of just an occasional guest blogger. I however have no shortage of people asking to do guest posts, and feature at least one or two per week.
  6. Carl says:
Very useful tips! I have a site called Expat American (expatamerican.com), which I really need to have guest bloggers for. There's just no way I can cover every country and continent. I've tried My Blog Guest, and am now trying Kapost, but now I'll add a Submit Article page and see if that helps. Thanks!
    • Hesham says:
Carl, Blog need work, getting guest bloggers needs more work!
      • Carl says:
        ;-> So true!
  7. Vernessa Taylor says:
Hi Hesham! Really insightful article. Although I have not really considered having a multi-author blog, I have wanted to better understand the rationale behind one such as you have here. Being techie, it is always a thrill to see how something that works was put together, what's been learned, and how it evolves. I have posted articles as a guest a few times this year. It felt good writing something original for someone who poses the question: "Will you write a guest post for my blog?" YES, I want to take Famous Bloggers up on the offer to become a guest poster. Hope I can do a good job for both of us. :) Keep up the excellent work!
    • Hesham says:
Hi Vernessa, my apologize for the late reply! Glad you have found this post useful! Looking forward to your guest post at any time!
  8. Jan says:
Thanks for the post. I'm new to "serious" blogging, and I've wanted to do some guest blogging -- outgoing rather than incoming. This is good information even from that perspcctive. I'm bookmarking this page for the list of social blogs, as well as the rest of the good content.
    • Hesham says:
Hi Jan, sorry for the late reply, I encourage you to guest post for other blogs, it's great experience that you will enjoy a lot!
  9. Karla Campos Lopez says:
I like how you support sharing your guest author content on social media sites, I think this is essential. By sharing content submitted by guest bloggers on channels like Twitter, Facebook and places like Digg you are creating an added incentive for people to want to guest blog on your site.
    • Hesham says:
Karla, I do my best to keep the blog up and running, it's good for everyone! I hope more people notice what you have noticed and join me in promoting their own articles! P.S. I don't look into the date of adding your comment anymore, more comments everyday, it's hard to follow, forgive me :)
      • Karla Campos Lopez says:
No big deal, thank you for replying : )
  10. Karan Singhal says:
Right now, I'm the type of blogger that submits guest posts to other bloggers. I hope that once I reach a larger audience and open my blog to guest posting I'll also receive some myself. I understand that you Hesham, as a busy person, would not have enough time to guest post often.
    • Hesham says:
I see your articles everywhere Karan, and I really wish you good luck with your plan, glad you understand me :)
      • Karan Singhal says:
Really? I don't guest post that much but I guess it seems to be working! Thanks!
        • Hesham says:
it depends on what "how much" means, for me I posted about 3 times which i consider too much for me an my time :) You already posted here 3 times, means more than I did for other blogs lol
          • Karan Singhal says:
lol, I did like 3 posts for every growing blog out there. :-o
  11. Andy says:
Great advice, as I'd expect from a hub like this! The community aspect is something I think large multi-author blogs have an in-built advantage with. 15. Aswani says:
Well, all of the above tips are must to be followed in case you are a professional blogger. The same cannot be applied to bloggers like us. But yes, I would like to add here one thing - your blog reputation does matter a lot when it comes to making people think about writing on your blog. If you have quality blog with decent traffic then it becomes easier for others to decide about guest blogging. In other words, it becomes an important factor in luring the so called guest bloggers. This is what I have experienced till date. Plus, one thing I believe that the bigger your blogging network, better and easier it becomes to find a guest blogger. Though you still have to convince them for the same. .-= NEW from Aswani´s last blog ..Social Media Privacy - The known threats and the possible solution =-.
    • Hesham says:
Thank you so much for your feedback Aswani! I agree with you that blog reputation is very important factor that help bloggers to make decision whether to guest post or not! and actually I relay on social media especially Twitter to drive traffic to the published articles which makes almost everyone satisfy with the results compared to other blog that accept guest blogging (I have been told so!) I started to invite bloggers to write for FamousBloggers on the early time of starting the blog, today I actually don't invite anyone because it's kind of spreading on the blogosphere that we are doing it the right way, and this is the hard part... I believe it's not hard to reach the top.. but it's so.. so very hard to stay there! Thank you Aswani, I appreciate your time

Hi Hesham, I've seen you around but I came because I thought your comment on tycoonblogger/blogging community such and such, was class act. You didn't participate in the shiz and you still represented your site here very well. I applaud you for that. Keep up the nice work. As for guest posting I can't really add anything of value as you covered it very well. I will say that for now me guest posting on others sites and vice versa is not really beneficial for me right now as my audience and where I'd post is basically one in the same. Or I should say I don''t do it for traffic because it doesn't benefit me that way. I am open to guest bloggers for my blog but don't solicit it as such. If someone wants to publish a post I'm usually open to it. Having said that once I reach *cough, cough* problogger status then that'll change of course. :) Then everybody will want to add their 2 cents in for the traffic. For now we just help each other out in any way we can. I'm rambling so I'll go now, but keep the class! You are so on point w/ all of the reasons , do's & dont's - whether one has a personal blog or multi authored blog . The overall factor is knowing your niche , and to have a plan . In essence , one needs a strategy as well as an approach . I , just like yourself am not the type of blogger who would accept to write on someone elses blog - for several reasons which I will not digress into at this point - it is simply my personal choice . However , I do believe that a blog should be planned & developed from the onset as to whether it will be utilised as a personal or multi authored blog . I see many uni-bloggers now turning their uni-blogs into multi-blogs- and I dont believe that multi-authoring is effective in all instances - [ again I have my own theory behind this - and I will not digress into details in a comment area. ] . There are so many multi authored blogs out there - yet its all the same content , its as if originality has simply perished within the vortex of cyberspace , and everyone out there who has run dry out of ideas is looking to hire other bloggers to write for them - I see it everywhere , however : I cannot be a part of it . My blog is my personal home where I express my knowledge , ideas , musings and information . Visitors are welcome , but they cant move in - its a 1 bedroom :D Multi authored sites / blogs can be successful from their inception and there are many great multi authored blogs out there , ( your own Famous Bloggers being one of them ) - and the success behind this is due to the fact that it was planned and created to be this way from the beginning Hesham . However , there are uni-blogs which are just as successful being maintained by 1 individual rather than 10 also , and there are different factors to be considered on both sides of the spectrum I believe . Overall - if your given recipe works , then continue working it ! This was truly a great article , thank you for sharing your thoughts w the community . P.S: Good to see you have finally designed your admin panel , it looks FANTABULOUS ! :D [ Im glad I was able to provide you w/ the necessary info on creating it ] M. .-= NEW from Mia´s last blog ..Review : The Webs Best New Up & Coming Web Designers =-.

lol yes Thomas, it saved me lots of time but I was spending more time managing the process of publishing and communicating with bloggers and other development/design work...etc! Actually If I am blogging a lone I will save more time, but what to do? I love the good company ;) Thank you for your nice comment buddy, and also for being active on our community!

I am actually putting together a submission, but I am not sure if I truly want to open Blondish.net up to registering users. As a blog primarily written by myself (with more than 300 posts and over 100 content pages of free graphics and such), I think just opening it up with a Submit Your Own Article might be fine. I am going to open WPAddict.net up to open registration, and a submission form. Submission form will be powered by TDO forms. .-= NEW from Nile Flores´s last blog ..What Makes An Expert in Blogging And In Your Niche? =-.
    • Hesham says:
Ah! using TDO forms is a good idea, just don't forget that you will have to edit all article before publishing it! I am thinking to add the TDO forms for new submission like most of tech and design blogs to give more links to our community, but just by thinking about it I feel that this could effect our guest blogging average because then bloggers will publish their posts on their own blogs and just get a linkback to it from our blog! (mmm... maybe latter!)

Hesham thanks for taking time for writing such a killer post. I have seen and read many guest post on your blog. The main reason of getting guest blogger on your blog is for your attractive designed blog. Again people engage on commenting on your blog as you provide dofollow link on comment. I do not think that guest blogging is not working on your blog. You are working hard on your blog and posting frequency is also very good. Within few days you can come to the top most blogger list. Best wishes to you. .-= NEW from chandan@work at home blog´s last blog ..7 Best Work At Home Marketplace For Freelancer =-.

Glad you liked the post Chandan, the title of the post doesn't represent FamousBloggers as you said, we don't have a problem now with finding guest posts because I worked a lot to place the blog in this level! The title is more to tell and inform readers who are seeking this topic more about how to deal with guest blogging issues! I see some hidden advice here about dofollow and comments, cool! Thank you for your kind wishes!

There has been a rash of blogs hacked lately. It is believed a lot of them were due to a vulnerability caused by those allowing people to upload to their blogs, aka "contributors". What do you think of this? .-= NEW from Dennis Edell @ Direct Sales Marketing´s last blog ..Web Income Experiments DotCom Wins Hands-Down! =-.
    • element321 says:
Dennis, I believe this is not an issue for Hesham. His quest writers do not have access to uploads. All you can do is log on and post to draft. On my site. I have the settings the same permissions. .-= NEW from element321´s last blog ..Temporary Post Used For Theme Detection (2a1976db-1c28-4fc1-ab0f-a9c22b99ce53 – 3bfe001a-32de-4114-a6b4-4005b770f6d7) =-.
      • Dennis Edell says:
James - It was my understanding that is all the hacked gave permission for as well. How much access does a decent hacker need? Not much. .-= NEW from Dennis Edell @ Direct Sales Marketing´s last blog ..Web Income Experiments DotCom Wins Hands-Down! =-.
    • Hesham says:
Like James said, no photo uploads or anything from that is allowed! First of all, I am sure that there is no 100% secured site or server! Let me remember and share with you some of what I have experienced and faced while developing website for clients based on different PHP CMS platforms like WP, Joomla and Moodle...etc. - I remember one website I developed for a client and it was hacked 3 times in one year because the site was on a cheap local hosting, I advised him to go with a better company and things went good after that, - I know also that plugins you are running on the plugin could increase chances for hackers to play! - If your site is getting too much attention and you have enemies, then this also could be the reason, because your competitors will maybe do some dirty work trying to take you down (this mostly happen to media and big news sites that has something related to politics/religion) - For the last GoDaddy hack - if we think about it - you will find that the hack was hitting the server in general, and it's not targeting the blogs! although I know that GoDaddy is so secured but .... nothing is perfect! This is only my opinion about it depending on my personal experience and what I sow while working on the internet, I actually don't have much experience with dealing with servers and internet security, but I was having other guys who dose this work in the company!

This is true, I have seen guest bloggers give their best content, I feel so good when I receive a good post because it makes me feel that people trust our blog and that we should work more harder to spread their voices! Thanks a lot for stepping and taking time to comment!
    • D.J.Rony says:
When guest blogger are looking blogs of their own niche they are looking for blogs with high rank. Two things happen then- Google notices the link back and people visiting the site also notices that a good article has been wrote by another author. So interested people checks the bloggers blog. So why not I will give my best shot while I am guest blogging?
