Is One Blog Enough to Earn Money from Blogging?

June 13, 2010 - Last Modified: June 13, 2010 by Nasrul Hanis

Is it Enough?

I once asked myself a question in my early time in blogging – is one blog enough for me?

At that time, I answered to myself – yes, it’s enough.

But as I started to explore more things about blogging, the same question came into my mind. But I got different answer – I need more than one blog!

Why I changed my mind? That’s what I want to share with you here at Famous Bloggers.

First Factor: Higher Potential for Earnings

As I explored more about blogging, I learned that I could earn money from blogging by various ways such as writing sponsored posts, advertisements, Adsense and etc. I felt very happy when I received my first payment and it turned blogging from just a hobby into my part-time job until today.

I started to accept blogging as my source of income and investment. If I have the potential to earn 5USD-10USD per week from one blog, how about 2, 3, 4 or more blogs? Based on this potential, I decided to run more than one blog.

Second Factor: Knowledge in Various Niches

Blogging is not just a money making platform for me. It’s also a chance for me to know, explore and share knowledge in various niches. I started with my personal blog at first and then I felt that I need to discuss and share the knowledge and information through niche blogs so I can enhance my knowledge in any particular niche. Currently I have a set blogs with various niches from personal, business, health to real estate matters and honestly running these blogs help me a lot in enhancing my knowledge in the involved niches.

Argumentation

I believe some bloggers would disagree with me especially when we’re talking about time consumption and the focus on building reputation. For me, it’s depend on our own blogging style. Some bloggers can’t afford too much blogs so it’s better to stick to one site. I have my own checklist and set of ideas for contents that I want to publish at my blogs. I put my efforts to build reputation for myself and my blogs.

It depends on you.

How To Know?

Some fellow bloggers asked me questions on similar matter – to be a successful blogger, how many blogs should I have?

My answer is – try to ask yourself these questions:

  • What do you want to achieve from blogging?
  • What is your blogging style?
  • What is your blogging strategy?

These are the questions which I asked myself before I decided to run more than one blog.

Wrap Up

One blog, 2 blogs, 3 blogs.. or more? You have to determine it yourself as you know who you are – your capability, your availability to write, and etc. Remember that the ultimate factor to determine your success is not the number of blogs you have but your efforts, strategy and creativity.

And again, it depends on you 🙂

It is really very hard to maintain multiple blogs but the blogger can post whatever he desires specially if it is a personal blog. Audience is looking for information so i expect every post is with value. Categories is one of the options to look forward when wanting to write different things in just one place.
  2. Mark says:
Running more than one blog is definitely doable if the blogger outsources effectively. The only problem, of course, is findin competent and capable people to outsource to. If you can put together a great team, then the sky is the limit. Great article, Nasrul...:) Mark
  3. Caitlyn says:
Great article. So depending on the person, what you take away from this, is have a plan and a strategy for your blog direction. Only take on as many blogs as you can handle - and keep updated and relevant. As far as making money...it's possible, but be in it for passion, on a subject(s) you love, and as with anything - not just blogging - the money will come.
  4. ravi says:
You don't need more than one blog to make money, but if you want to make millions you should have more than one blogs
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
You got an interesting quote there! :D
  5. Paul Tech says:
In terms of monetizing, having more blogs may make sense, if you have each blog achieving say 100 unique visitors per day. But if you want all the blogs to be equally successful, I think it is really hard as you don't have enough time to write quality content and promote the blogs.
  6. Colleen says:
I would say yes! We only have one blog, but our niche is quite different than most money making blogs. We actually have to meet our clients off-line to make money!
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Agree! :D And I guess this is the most encouraging factor to run more than one blogs!
  7. Jason Jumat says:
As blogging can take quite a lot of time from a blogger in able to keep ranking higher, it is quite tempting not to have more than one blog - but ultimately your time will need to be sacrificed. I think, sometimes it's better to concentrate on only one blog while have different domain on the one blog. That will make it a multi-blog and more interesting.
  8. Andrew says:
If you treat your blog like a business and not just a blog it can make your money - so start with one blog. Then when you are making enough money - invest in outsourcing and start a second one. Don't start 2 straight off - they will take far too long to become successful. Andrew
  9. James Pruitt says:
I agree with alot of the other posts here. I personally have 3 blogs right now, and that is plenty for me. Between my writing clients, blog posts, and building links to my blog posts, i am a buzzy bee. I try to post on each of my blogs at least once a week, and one of them i hit twice a week. however, its not just about the post. you have to build links to that post, and spread the word, drive traffic, research new material.. running one can be a full time job. For me, i like working 15 hour days. i am having so much fun, most of the time it doesnt feel like work anyway.
  10. AJ says:
It definitely depends on the person. But I think it is also clear to make the distinction between a blog and your average website. Blogs tend to take much longer. For example, I can own 10 websites that all they do is showcase different affiliate products and I can easily write a new product page in a few minutes. Writing blog posts tend to require much more thought and commitment. I think people often forget the real meaning of a blog... For me 1 blog seems like enough and then owning 5-10 sites apart from your blog is good. But more then 1 blog...nah, I rather focus on one. But hey, when I get more "free time" if I ever do I may change my mind :)
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
You highlighted a nice point there - what is blog and what is average website? I admit sometimes I also made mistake in using the 'blog' and 'website' terms in my articles. Thanks for making it clear. Yeah.. running more than one blog also need ample of time so check first whether you are able or not to do it ;)
  11. Ana says:
That's a very ambitious proposition. Can I do it without compromising the quality of the content? I think personally I'd rather focus on one blog and better traffic generation and conversion = making more money. Best, Ana Hoffman
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Again, it depends on your blogging style. But whatever it be, never let your quality down or running multiple blogs will be a total waste. I agree that focusing on one blog could produce more traffic generation and conversion but for some bloggers they think like this: One single blog: niche + traffic + conversion = money Multiple blogs: more niches + more traffic + more conversion = more money! And honestly this way of thinking also motivates me to run more than one blog :)
  12. Jorgen says:
People tend to catch the blogger-bug after the first blog is set up (me being one of these people) so I think that's the way to go. You can always cross post some of the content as long as you change the titles and headers round a bit.
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Yes, I do agree with that :) Cross posting is one the ways and we could explore more on that.
  13. SEO Company says:
Nice post i think it's depends on your if you have a team for content writing you can easily manage more blog but if you done everything self then one blog also want more time...
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Yes, you're right. Getting a team is a brilliant step in optimizing all the blogs. I'll looking forward to that. A good idea. Thanks :)
  14. Dennis Edell says:
One truly solid piece I can give you from personal experience is to not go multiple too soon. You WILL experience a serious feeling of being overwhelmed and most likely quit. Now that i am not green anymore, a blog network is exactly where I'm going...you nailed many of the benefits in the article above. :)
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
I agree with your point - don't go multiple too soon. I see the trend of new bloggers starting with 2-3 blogs at once! And I personally against that strategy. Put yourself in a suitable condition where you know how to manage a blog, then create new one based on needs and demands (or other reasons) and you're ready to go.
  15. Mike says:
From my experience. I had several blogs on my own promoting all of them is such an exhausted job I've ever done. Besides that, I couldn't focus on quality content in my main blog so my advice is: try 2, 3 blogs to see whether you can handle things. if you can handle it well, go for it. Otherwise, focus on 1 blog only and get that blog fly before you start a new one.
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Yes, you're right. Decide based on your capability, availability and strategy. Some bloggers got exhausted running multiple blogs and I can't deny that as I also got my own way of doing that. It depends on you. You plan what you want to achieve ;)
  16. Gail says:
Great topic and one of the most critical decisions any blogger will make. While I agree that multiple blogs may eventually be better, I also know that you can spend all your time promoting one effectively. Managing Social Networking, email, comments, content, etc. for more than one blog is a major logistical challenge. I recommend that you focus on just one until you get an entire process created and you can do it consistently before you add more sites. There are finally tools to manage multiple Twitter accounts well but few or none for other important Social Networks. If you are already struggling trying to juggle multiple blogs, consider partnering with someone you can trust who is passionate about each niche so you can pool your time and talents. Or focus on one and do a minimum in the others until you get your process down. I have been consistently working with others to document best practices and we are getting very close to having what we need. I can send those who ask a copy of what we are using. There is no problem having more than one blog - it is effectively promoting more than one that is tricky. There are only so many hours in the day. If you don't use UNIQUE article marketing, CommentLuv and commenting, Social Networking and collaborating you are not efectively raising visibility for what you write. Quality content IS essential but promoting it is more important than posting great stuff every day that few ever see!
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Yeah, it's a challenge and critical decision that a blogger should make. And honestly sometimes it's quite hard to face the 'juggling' time. But you'd gave me an awesome idea - seeking for partnership! We could offer spaces for writers from new sites so they can participate in updating contents. We get content, they got visibility. Something like Famous Bloggers is doing currently. It's a great idea. Thanks, pal! I'll explore more about it.
  17. Edward Nigma says:
Oh, how often has it been said - quality is more important than quantity, but if you cannot make that one blog profitable enough (comon, we all have limits), then having two blogs in different niches can save your day.
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Agree! And yes, quality is an important thing so don't rely too much on the quantity! ;)
  18. marcus says:
Starting off with 1 blog is just fine. But as you continue to blog you will realize that to keep your blog seo optimzed it may be a good idea to start a new blog. As a blogger you find different things you need to talk about but sometimes these things do not go with the theme of your blog. As you evolve as an internet marketer you learn different things in different niches and each niche deserves it's own platform.
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Yes, and that's what happened to me. I'm starting to explore more niches from time to time but I can't just put all the things in one blog. It'll destroy the blog. So I decided to create another blog on that particular niche so it can run on it's own platform.
  19. Justin Germino says:
This is a good article and I had the exact way of thinking when I started blogging 2 years ago, if I made $90 per month with one blog, why not try to run 3 blogs and make $270 per month at least. It does not work like this however, in running 3 blogs I am now commited to 90+ articles per month (non paid) and more if you include the sponsored posts. I find that I make 90% of my monthly earnings off of my flagship blog and the other two get about 3000 visits per month but only make an occasional SocialSpark or PayPerPost opp here. My tactic now is that if you have a good niche, topic focus on 1 mega site because you will make more with 1 PR5 blog with 30k visits per month than you will with 4 or 5 PR2 blog with < 10k traffic per month, and you can focus on writing less content and doing more SEO and promotion which will make 1 site more easy to grow than several at the same time. This is just my experience after running multiple blogs for two years, I know others will vary.
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
I agree with you and in fact basically it's my strategy of creating a set of niche blogs too. The tactic is clear where each site could help one another but it means you need more than one blog to do that. Thanks for your explanation :D
  20. Tushar says:
for full time blogger, i firmly believe that one blog is not enough..it cant be enough considering the fact that every expenses of yours depend on your blogging... but for part time bloggers, its ok
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Yeah, I guess you're right. However I believe different bloggers got different styles too. For me, I'm a just a part-time blogger but as I need more than one blog for earnings, I can't rely just on one blog. However we can see more bloggers seem to run more than one blog too for various purposes.
  21. Rich Hill says:
You might want to consider having a professional blogging company write and post the blog articles for you. Our company does this as a service to many large companies. We call it Third Party Blogging.
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Wow. That's a new thing for me. Maybe someone will search for you when creating a set of niche blogs. Thanks for your recommendation :)
  22. Dev says:
Nasrul, Nice article man. Having multiple blogs is really good idea. Currently i have 2 blogs and i don't think it's really hard to manage them. Thanks for sharing this great Post. ~Dev
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Thanks Dev. Yeah, for me it's a good idea as you're multiplying your sources of income. However the most important thing is to ensure you are capable to run and manage the blogs.
  23. Nabeel says:
I think it depends on how much time you have got vs how much time you can give to each blog. I think It is important to have one good, quality blog instead of 3 or 4 mediocre blogs. If you can make and handle more than one QUALITY blogs, then sure, go ahead, no problem with that. Nabeel
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
I agree with you. Focus one creating a quality blog first then if you see that you can run and manage more quality blogs, it's the suitable time to add the number of your blog.
  24. Asad says:
I agree with you that you should run blogs depending upon your potential. It depends upon your knowledge, passion and capability.
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Yes, because you know who you are :)
  25. CJ says:
In my opinion, One blog is definitely enough to earn money. But having more blogs is also awesome, assuming you have a lot of time on your hands. The bottom line though and a basic rule that I follow is, quality over quantity. Enough said. Haha CJ CJ's last blog ..The Secret To Making $10,000 Online and Living The Internet Dream
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Totally agree with what you'd mentioned - quality over quantity! In fact I also implement this concept in blogging. Numbers doesn't always represent the quality of something and that's why we have to plan our strategies well.. not only depends on 'how much' we have. The awesome thing of running more than one blog for me is - more knowledge, more earnings! :D
  26. Ryan says:
All great points Nasrul. Finding your objective will determine if 1 or more blogs is for you. Some prefer to specialize in one are, others to divide their talents. You can set up multiple streams of income through one blog but even more through many. It's all dependent on your motive. RB
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Yes, it depends on you! :) Your motive, your goal, your capability - you should determine your blogging style and how you work based on yourself. You can do this by asking yourself the questions that I suggested in the article :)
  27. Murlu says:
Having multiple blogs is really great especially when you know enough to keep multiple ones going - but you do have to worry about stretching yourself too thin. It's all about diversifying your income. If one starts to dip, you can always have your other to pick up the slack. Minisites and mini niche blogs are a great way to get started with multiple blogs because they aren't ones which need to be updated constantly.
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Honestly sometimes I do worry about myself because running multiple blogs quite challenging but the passion in blogging and sharing knowledge helps me a lot until today. As the result, I can double my income as well as creating a network between my niche blogs - and it's also helpful to build reputation and promoting between each other. And yes, I got both main and side blogs. Some niches need to be update frequently while some of them can be updated 2-3 times per week. And I love this - it creates a somewhat flexibility feeling inside of me :D
      • Murlu says:
Indeed Nasrul, if you have an entire day to write a blog post on your one blog, you're going to take that entire time. However, if you have two blogs, you'll still be able to get all the work done. We generally stretch out work but if we stay busy, we can be super productive even under stressful conditions.
        • Nasrul Hanis says:
Agree! You want to achieve something, you have put your efforts for it ;)
  28. Robyn from Sam's Web Guide says:
Great article Nasrul, I agree with having more than one blog. My personal plan is establishing numerous blogs that focus on more specific niches. Sites that focus on niches have a greater potential for building authority, relevant quality traffic as well as earnings. I will be focusing on specific keywords for each blog. You've made some great points. Keep it up.
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
You' re right. It's better to run specific sites for specific niches than sum up all the things inside on site - you will find it becomes harder and harder in the end! As we have to set specific goals for whatever we do, the same thing must be implemented for a site - for what niche it would be, what it could achieve and etc.
  29. Rohit Sane says:
I have somehow realized that I first need to concentrate my efforts in building a good blog and then concentrate on making money through it. Most people get into making money and cannot become good bloggers, and rather end up losing their own money..I somewhat agree with you that it depends on person to person and their capabilities.
    • Nasrul Hanis says:
Yeah.. I see there's no problem for a blogger to run more than one blog or not. It's about the blogger's own capability of doing that. I guess the factor for most people end up losing their money is because they couldn't implement the strategy although it's a great strategy - including making money by running more than one blog.
