Shhh 3 Part Secret to Online Business Success

February 7, 2011 - Last Modified: November 13, 2011 by Darren Monroe

Online Business Success

Before I begin really sharing some outrageous yet funny posts here, I want to establish some foundational thinking. I have had clients spend thousands on programs and courses. The sad part is that many refused to follow the law of simplicity. The law of simplicity online states that you do what you love, are most talented in, and helps others for a price. Please understand that you can buy a million online programs, courses, and books. I am not knocking that we all do. But if you chase a dollar you will lose ten.

Then there are those people who join a million coaching programs and travel around the world to every major blogging event. They keep busy at being busy. Sort of like one of those $30,000 rims from the Pimp my Ride TV show. Rims spin in circles yet take you nowhere. The tires, on the other hand, will take you anywhere you need or want to go.

The PTA rule keeps you from being a fool

PTA is an acronym for Passion, Talent, and Audience. If you don’t have those, you have nothing. Chase the money and you FAIL. The DNA of any authority, blogger, or online business is their ability to identify their unique selling proposition. You discover your unique selling proposition by uncovering your passion, talents, and audience. Now, here is where it gets a little ironic (and funny). You already know the first two, and your competition is waiting to deliver the third.

That’s right ladies and gentlemen, I am climbing in your library brain and pulling out your top files for passion and talent. Lastly, we are going to go thank and spank your competition. I will explain exactly what all of this means in detail below.

Passion

Passion is what you are more than likely doing now for FREE. One of the biggest things people tell me is that it is hard to find their passion. Even some famous GURU’s have told me that. I flat out disagree. I am going to prove how easy it is right now, because I am going to help you find your passion within minutes. First open up a text document or grab a pen and paper. I want to show you whats already in your brain.

Now I want you to list  (3) of your favorite movies, songs, and foods. The stuff you LOVE. The songs you sing like crazy or the movies you have watched a million times. Now, I know what you’re thinking:

“But Darren, I can’t make money from those things.”

Really? Hmmm that’s funny, because movies, music, and food are all billion dollar industries. The problem is that our society has educated us to get A’s in school. Instead “A” understanding of how to apply what we know. Dig inside of your love for something. Have you noticed that you can’t stop talking about it to your family or friends? Well, remember if content is king online then your passion will fuel a major amount of content creation.

Talent

Hey, has a stranger ever told you that you’re good at something? That’s an unbiased opinion. I want you to list 3 to 6 major talents you have. The main talents you want to focus on are the ones that are easy to do. See, the easy talents will allow you to get paid faster and at a higher rate. Think about the pilots that are paid top dollar. Their earnings are based on their talent and performance which creates their value.

We could care less about how well a pilot scored in calculus or other dynamics, unless it is tightly aligned to not crashing the plane!

Audience

The difference between you selling and selling NOW is immediacy. You need to find an audience that has an immediate need for a solution. Here is a little niche marketing secret (OK, it is not really a secret, I am just amazed how many people don’t know this). Instead of searching for a major niche like “Honda Cars” search for “Honda Cars for Generation Y in (name city or region here)”. The more specific you are the more problems you will discover. And trust me, thats a good thing. Here is where thanking and spanking your competition comes in, because you have to pinpoint your competitors.

You want to find them so you know if that niche is making money online. Also you want to learn from their mistakes and differentiate from them. That is why you want to thank them. Obviously the spank part comes in when you end their hopes and dreams by taking their customers.

“But Darren you mean my new Google Simplex Simulator Plus program wont work?”

I had to say that, because I love the crazy names of some of those programs. I am not saying it won’t work, only that you should have a foundation. The type of foundation that says, “this is what I love, these are my talents, and this is the group that is willing to pay for my solutions.” Then look back at that new or even older program or course you purchased and see how it can help you.

  2. Mark says:
Tightly focusing in on and narrowing a niche definitely helps in terms of conversions Darren. BTW, that is a really impressive resume you have there in you bio. Keep up the good work, friend. Mark

Great post! I've always believed in following your passion. Following your passion works wonders! It will help you overcome business obstacles (cuz they are going to happen), it helps you get out of bed when you feel like sleeping another hour, it helps you focus and pursue your goals on the days that things don't turn out exactly as you had hoped. Thanks for the great reminder!
  4. Fazal Mayar says:
I learned a lot from this post Darren. You need an audience to become successful online. An online business is simlar to an offline business, the main difference is the place of where the business is being done. One is online the other is offline but the customers are humans.
    • Darren Scott Monroe says:
Thanks Fazal, just as important you need the passion and talents or frankly your screwed even if you have an audience.
  5. Blog Towkay says:
What you wrote is really quite true. What is the point of all the A's from school when you do not have passion for the work you are doing. Building a successful online business takes much more than brains. It takes passion and motivation, both key attributes which many new bloggers and online entrepreneurs fall short of. Since when is making money that easy huh.
    • Darren Monroe says:
      Thanks so much :)
  6. TJ McDowell says:
Darren, Good stuff man! I'd never heard of the PTA acronym before, but I think after watching which businesses succeed and which fail, that the principle holds true. As far as determining your USP, there are a whole list of factors that make that up at the end of a book called Guerrilla Marketing. You've hit on a few of them here, but there are quite a few more that would be good for everyone to familiarize themselves with.
    • Darren Scott Monroe says:
Yeah that book is a classic TJ
  7. Dave Grimes II says:
Darren, At first I rolled my eyes when I read your topic. You know that feeling... you're scanning your RSS reader and you see an article that's been done to death and SEO'd out of relevance. So I was skeptical, but being that I was an English major in college, I know better than most not to just a book (or in this case a blog post) by its cover (or title). I was pleasantly surprised that your article was more of an exercise than a soap-box-aided rant. This is a tremendous piece. You've constructed your exercise and your philosophy with a great combination of simplicity and honesty. I really enjoyed this... I know a few friends who could use this kind of thing so I'll be sending it along to them. Thanks for sharing. Really great!
    • Darren Scott Monroe says:
LOL hey Dave I more than understand! Thank you sir. As my first article here I wanted to establish a foundation. PS I am following you over there on twitter mr QR codes.
  8. Morgan says:
GREAT stuff, Darren!! I love how you laid it out like it was and didn't use any fluff! Everything is sellable, it's how you sell it and how you build your community that matters. Awesome stuff!!
    • Darren Scott Monroe says:
      Thanks Morgan really appreciate that!
  9. Jeffrey Gross says:
Great post Darren! really liked the PTA concept.. I agree with you , unless you have these three, you cannot succeed! such a basic thing, i don think you need anything else to know/achieve more about online business
    • Darren Scott Monroe says:
Thanks Jeffery that's true no PTA no website....or at least one that make MONEY LOL
  10. Robert Dempsey says:
Great stuff Darren and I love that product name. Is that real? Narrowing in on a niche is such an awesome idea, especially as it's more likely that you're going to reach more responsive buyers.
    • Darren Scott Monroe says:
Well yes and no. Go to http://www.onlinepurpose.com I have a DVD called Purpose Passion and Profit that talks about the same thing. But now that you mentioned it I am going to put something together to give away for free fundamentally also.
  11. Murlu says:
I love your last line man, the fact that the best way to approach your business - for the longest time I was thinking that it would be implausible to bridge my love for electronic music with what I know but it's all starting to fall into line now because of the same goals I'm working on for my current business I'm building (design, site setup, etc) - I can apply my same skills for their promotion, get to talk with people that I love and have access to all kinds of great opportunities; this is lifestyle design baby!
    • Darren Scott Monroe says:
EXACTLY and you get it Murlu. Plus music is ripe speaking a marketing vet from the entertainment industry. Music and merch are just the tip of the iceberg. No one has even come close to online events etc.
  12. ZK says:
You added fun and I also like the style of your writing. I am sure this article will remove dust on many brains.
    • Darren Scott Monroe says:
      Thank you sir
  13. Fran Aslam From Onlinewriter says:
Hi Darren: Awesome article, great style that grabs everyone's attention . You are so right about people attitude on line. As you said it takes only three things, te rest follows. There is no sense buying program after program. Good work Darren Fran A
  14. James says:
Hey Darren, I like the article but you hit the nail on the head with the opening line. Your clients are like many other people searching for ways to build revenue, make money, etc - if 'Miracle Billion Dollar Plan A' doesn't deliver by next week they move off in search of '...Plan B'! T for Talent - it's good but, personally, I'd replace it 'Putting It Out There'. Talent can be honed like a sharp blade but unless you get the word out you're never going to learn what does, and doesn't, work. Well, that's my view - I could be wrong but it's worked for me so far. Keep blogging.
    • Darren Scott Monroe says:
Hey thanks James but dont put it out there until you know your strengths (Talents) and when I say that I mean what you either naturally do best or have honed as a skill. By no means a skill you have to develop later. That takes too long.
  15. Val says:
Hi Darren, Great article, very clear, instructional and inspiring. Makes me re-evaluate my own positioning and think of some new ideas. Thank you for that! The only thing I'd like to add to your list is "Learn the basics of online promotion". This may be a purely technical aspect, but it helps to craft a few key elements into your business idea right from the start, like good keywords, supposed ways to reach your audience (specific online communities or media outlets), supplemental products to promote, potential partners, email follow-up plan, etc. It's easier to buy a good domain, create an appropriate site structure, schedule your work when you plan for all these things in advance. If you overlook these and try to adapt later, that may take much more effort.
    • Darren Monroe says:
Thank you Val, but the basics / tech side are what I fear is the main problem. There are a billion searches for what you just mentioned. But all of that stuff means nothing if you don't even like doing that stuff. Or even have a talent for that niche your about to create a site for. Many times people will get hyped up buying domains after their keyword searches for say "ass munching dogs" and then try to create a "ass munching dogs" website. Then discover they didn't like dogs in the first place (laughing). Or that they have about as much talent talking about "ass munching dogs" as a mute humming in a choir. Plus who is to say that that audience is even willing to BUY "the ultimate guide to buying ass munching dogs"? Chew on that Val LOL. Seriously thanks though for the comment and compliment.
      • Val says:
You're right, it's easy to get distracted by the technical side... Maybe one should follow some process like codify the core business idea based on your 3 principles first, and then fill in some details to the plan based on the technicalities that I mentioned. I still believe it is essential to consider these before actually launching a website.
        • Darren Monroe says:
That I would agree on after getting the mental side correct then launch possibly the ass munching dog site :)
  16. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Darren, Good article. Part 3, Audience is the part that the most online business is missing. In my branch, real estate are my website the only one in our area/region who using the title to really specify exact; street, community, building name, area, ect.. So the really BUYER who is looking for THAT property come direct to us, and they are now buyer. We have proved it many times.
  17. Sathish says:
Hi Darren, Wonderful article. If we have the passion to succeed even without talent we can get it with the help of a good audience base. Sathish
