Use Facebook to Drive Traffic To Your Site

April 4, 2011 - Last Modified: February 14, 2013 by James Johnston 7,888

Facebook Traffic

One of my favorite parts about generating traffic and managing an online community is using social media. Some will say that building traffic with social media isn’t all that great or you can not get a large increase in traffic because of social media. I have to disagree with this thought. With social networks such as Twitter with its 200 million users and Facebook with its 600 million active users, a website owner/business would be crazy not to tap into that.

When I first started out building and designing sites, I had no clue what SEO and social media marketing was and thought I didn’t need it. I thought all I needed was good content and a great design. After I started working at my first design firm, I was asked to learn SEO and social media marketing. After a basic crash course in SEO, I started researching and teaching myself SEO. I found the research alone took up a good part of my scheduled day. So adding social media marketing was really out of my reach and besides I am not trained marketing.

At some point, I realized that I was going to need to learn social media marketing, but I wasn’t sure where to start. So when I first started out with social media traffic generation, I had no idea how social media would work for me. After some research, I came up with a game plan and jumped right in.

After a few months of working on my first traffic generating case study, I found that creating good content and SEO wasn’t enough. SEO is great for steady traffic, but its not good enough if you want comments on your blog and people purchasing your products and services. Through research and testing I found social media seem to do better at converting readers into clients and customers.

My History With Social Media

my social media

Before I got into social media as another avenue to generate traffic, I had only used Facebook and LinkedIn for personal use. After some time I added Twitter and Facebook as my main tools for traffic. At first I could see why people say social media doesn’t bring traffic to a site. After a few months of research I started getting traffic from Twitter and after reading Twitter Dummy, I learned that you have to have engage with your followers. So I took that advice and used on several other social networks. Within a few months, I saw a dramatic increase in traffic from these social sites.

Now I use a variety of social media sources to get traffic. I use social media bookmark sites and micro blogging sites along with other social media networks like Facebook and Twitter to get traffic from. But my favorites social media networks are Facebook and Twitter.

Using Facebook To Generate Traffic

Since there is so much talk about Twitter how to get traffic from that site,  I decided I would talk about my second favorite place to get traffic from and that is Facebook and Facebook fan pages.

Facebook – Personal

As I mentioned before, I mostly used Facebook for personal use and did not mix it with business.  After some  research and getting to know how Facebook settings and privacy worked, I started using Facebook as a way to generate traffic.

First thing I did was let the world know I use Facebook. I sent out messages on different social media sites, I added my Facebook profile links to whatever profile allowed me to add it, and finally I add links to my Facebook profile to my sites. At one time,  I use to have a message letting my readers know they could connect with me on Facebook.

Once I started getting more bloggers added to my list, I created filters (groups for friends) so I could seperate family/personal/work friends from my blogging and networked friends. I found very quickly that your friends and family may not be interested in your niche blogging promotions as your network friends are. So I setup the filters to only let certain status’s be seen by certain people.

After getting all this setup, I started engaging with my followers. I responded to status updates with useful and helpful comments, add likes to any link that I Liked, and I shared content from my sites and some of my favorite articles I read through out the day.

Once I started engaging with my followers, I started getting traffic to my sites. I do not engage as much as I use to and I can see the difference. I still get the traffic, but I do not get that many comments and likes as I would like. So its important to keep up with your Facebook friends. Some of them like communicating with others. Just dropping links to your sites and others is not being social. Eventually you will loose your blogging friends and your traffic.

The one draw back to Facebook personal, at least for me, is that my privacy is set so only friends can see my information and wall. I do this to keep unwanted eyes from seeing what I am sharing. But at the same time, it keeps others from finding and seeing my content that I am sharing.

Facebook Groups

facebook groups

Another potential place to generate traffic is from Facebook groups. Facebook groups are still pretty new and a lot of people do not like them. I think its mostly because setting up this new feature where anyone can add any of their friends to a group even if a user doesn’t want to join that group, could be a new to spam people. Also, I found it very annoying getting hundreds of update emails from these groups. But once I figured out how to remove myself from these groups and filter out these emails, I started liking these groups.

Although I am still testing this traffic building method, I see a fair amount of traffic and some of it is from the groups. My recommendation is to look for small groups such as cool bloggers, that was Setup by John Sullivan, and was setup for bloggers to share their content and to hang out. If cool bloggers isn’t your thing, look for groups that match your niche or groups that might be interested in your content and join those groups.

If none exists, then create a group for your niche. Do not invite everyone to your group without asking them. Send them a private message and explain to them what the group is and ask them if they want to join. Second, when sharing content in your groups, only share your best content, keep the asking to a minimum, never double post an article, and always reply and send out tweets, diggs, and stumbles whenever possible. When not helping out with others, try and engage with the group, and spend some time on there.

If you want to join cool bloggers, join my network on Facebook and just ask, I will invite you.

Facebook Fan Pages

facebook fan pages

When working with Facebook to build to traffic, do not overlook Facebook fan pages. When I first started out, I did. Because of that it has taken a little bit of time to build up fan page fans and I am still working on getting more. But with the 130+ facebook user fans current as of March 30th, 2011, I am getting a good amount a traffic from this site.

Since my data is a bit limited, I am working on projection and a gut feel that the fan page is going to be great way to build traffic. From everything I have read and major corporations creating and being active with facebook fan pages, I can see the chance to get traffic from the fan page.

I learned from research and testing with my fan page to back up those findings, you can easily get traffic from the site. You need fans that are interested in your company, website, or services and good content to get users interested in your fan page and website. If you do not have the fans or content, your fan page will stay a ghost town.

The first thing I did was update my fan page information. I made sure to add keywords and topics and services offered on the website. If you haven’t already created a fan page, think carefully about what you name it. I have seen some sites that have the company name and then they add keywords after the name.

Looks like: Your Fan Page | social media | SEO | Blogging | Design | Services and Resources. But I haven’t found any evidence that this helps. Just make sure to fill out all of the basic information fields and make sure to add your keywords so the search engines and Facebook search can find your site.

Next, I started adding content to my fan page. Originally I just feed in my own blog articles, and I got a small amount of traffic but not worth the mention. So I decided that maybe if I started adding articles that would be interesting and useful to my fans, this might get more traffic back to my site. I started small and got a small increase.

After realizing that I adding useful content from other blogs to my site was helping me get more fans and more traffic to my site, started looking for ways to add more content. I realized real fast, that I could not physically add all the great content to the site to the fan page without help. So I found a service called Dlvr.it to feed content into my Facebook wall. Dlvr.it uses a website’s RSS post links to the Facebook, Facebook fan page, Twitter and several other social networks as well.

deliver content social web

Once I found Dlvr.it, I configured ten of my most trusted and favorite sites that has a great track record of producing killer and useful articles feed into my Facebook page. I ended up sharing articles in design, SEO, social media, and blogging since my niche is new media and I have a mixture fans that like only a few of the topics I feed to my blog. Having a variety of useful articles to read will attract more fans, just keep those articles related to niche or would be helpful resources for those in your niche.

After selecting my favorite blogs, I configured Dlvr.it to share links from each site only once a day and grab the latest article. I then set Dlvr.t to check the site once a day and some to check every 12 hours and post the newest link if available. On several of the more important sites, I configured them to post links at the high traffic times for the fan page.

Now all you have to do is monitor your fan page for activity and respond to any comments, shares, and likes.

The last thing I did was create a welcome page for the site. This is actually pretty easy to do, but if you do not have the design skills to create your own welcome page, you can always look for a Facebook fan page welcome page theme. Then add the code to your fan page. For me, I could of use Dreamweaver to create the cod to posted it Facebook.

But, Francisco Rosales of SocialMouths created a great tutorial on how to create a basic welcome landing page for Facebook even if you are not a designer.

How To Build A Facebook Landing Page With iFrames

Basically all you have to do is come up with the welcome page image and head over to image-maps and create an image map. Once you have the code for the image map copy the code over to your Facebook page.

Note: When creating your welcome page, make sure to add call to action buttons and links to your website other important social media profiles.  Please refer to the article for the complete tutorial.

After completing your welcome page,  you may want to create resource list to niche related freebies and premium resources. Although I haven’t implemented this feature yet, I have seen several sites offering resources only to those that “like the fan the page”. I think this would be a great way to get new facebook users to like your site and become a return visitor that also visits your site.

Facebook is always adding new features to personal profiles and fan pages. So always check Facebook and your favorite social media sites for the latest news and features for Facebook.

Final Thoughts

There are so many social media networks out there and I use quite a few sites. I use a lot of different social media network types, everything from social bookmarking sites to reblogging sites such as Posterous and Tumblr to share content and build traffic. But out of all the social media sites I use, Twitter and Facebook are the best.

What social media sites are you using and what are the best sites for you and niche?

Unfortunately Facebook introduced a limitation to the number of fans who will receives the news from fan page! Now we have to pay to promote a post to our fans!!!

Facebook is a very powerful tool that could be used to drive quality targeted traffic to any website/blog which is also same for most social media site. But the trick is, people just have to know how to use these social media platform to drive traffic. I have come to find out that posting valuable contents with links to relevant posts or article really converts. Also, posting videos has done so good work along the line with asking question to encourage fans to share views and experiences.

The information you've given here is really nice and i got few new things to learn from it. Here, I have one question. Most of us knows that face book has great nos' of users but don't you think that the running updates like news scrolling gives your entire efforts or updates just a second time. Yes, it blinks again only if someone responds to your link, photo or video. What would you suggest best practice in this case? Thanks in anticipation.

I can't say enough about the positives of having a "companion" facebook page for your blog. My page's fan base has grown to 7,000+ in just over two years, and drives at least half of the daily traffic to my blog. Having the page allows for a lot of personal interaction with readers and creates a sense of community that I find far more personal than exchanges in comments (though those are important too). I am able to respond in real time to posts from "fans" -- with a large "audience" listening -- and the page generates a fair amount of readers' posts, most of which are excellent added content. Facebook has allowed me to exploit a very small niche (blogging about one breed of dog), and for all its tics and tremors, I value it tremendously. Laurie Eno The Daily Corgi

I think starting a Facebook group about a subject that you are passionate about is a smart move all around.

I will love it if this is a no-brainer thing and assists you as you go along with the design you want. I dread reading hundreds of lines of manual. We find it extremely easy to update when needed and there are heaps of plugins and free themes to use floating around on the web.
  7. Mark says:
OK, James, you convinced me. I have been kicking around the idea of building a Facebook fan page for a while...just never got around to it. Reading you talk about how you have been getting good traffic from it has made me curious. Thanks for the great article...:) Mark
  8. Terje Sannarnes says:
Today the main sources of regular targeted traffic to a website are considered to be popular search engines like Google and Yahoo and social network sites like FaceBook. Talking about FaceBook it should be noted that it is a network that unites people from all over the world. So, predicting the future I would like to say that FaceBook and other popular social network resources may become a good alternative forpopular search engines very soon. That's why each online marketer has to pay special attention to advertising strategy in FaceBook and other popular social networks.

  10. Enzie Shahmiri says:
I have 6 blogger blogs on various topics that are now combined into one Tumblr feed, which is embedded in my website under enzieshahmiri.com. As I post on blogger, each post gets send to Tumblr which in turn gets send to my Facebook's personal and fan page. I post manually to Twitter by giving my website/blog address. Since I post images with only a catch phrase and a prompt of "read more" readers are now finally landing on my website. Here comes the problem with Facebook, if I have Tumblr automatically post, then readers land on tumblr instead of my site. Any ideas how I can drive that traffic to my web site instead? In this day and age of social networking keeping once website traffic up is extremely difficult and I feel like a juggler at times :)

I always use Facebook as a way of generating traffic to my blog, and besides; it's free! I just usually give the link to my friends and then they just simply open it up :) When on Facebook, the rule always apply : "The more friends, the better"
  12. Ayden says:
Dlvr.it is a similar tool to ping.fm right? They're both used as aggregators?

Well , I need to focus on Social Media Marketing now. Just SEO is not enough rightly said.

Hey James, My facebook page is still really young. Still putting work into it. The tutorial on creating a welcome page is really good since I don't have much time to go and design a great welcome page.

If I build it they will come - but only because I read this post. Oh and thanks for the heads up on Dlvr.it OMG I love it! Already configured 5 of my favourite blogs to feed content to Li, FB and Twitter so excited to see how this goes. Thanks James, this really is a brilliant post. Great article and I'll tweet it for ya!

Thanks Brian, Your article was a good one to and you did a great job at marketing it. I think if you try out some of the tools I mentioned in this articles, I think your difficulties getting using Facebook marketing would go away or at least help you get more traffic. I bet with your marketing resources, you should be able take full advantage of Facebook traffic pretty quickly. It just takes a time and patience, just like any other marketing strategy.
  18. Melinda says:
Hi James! Great stuff. I realize I haven't done all I could do on my Facebook pages. I have some work to do. Thanks for the tips!
    • James Johnston says:
Thanks Melinda, Hope the Facebook tips help you out. Facebook can be difficult to figure out what works best for a business. Try them out, if they do not seem to be working, let me know, maybe we can figure something out...
  19. Justin Germino says:
For myself I decided that my social media accounts were all going to be used for my blogging personality and none of it for "personal" use so I have everything open publicly. I don't share anything on any network online that I am not willing to publicly display to the world. I use personal communications only with email, FB messaging or Twitter DM's, Skype conversations or good old fashioned phone calls. Facebook is still limited when you use it as a page, though it's better than it has been previously. You don't get automatic email updates as a page (though you can use an app to get them) and you can't easily find and network with other profiles easily, only other pages. Until Facebook allows pages to function in the same way a user "profile" can it does limit how much you can do with it.
    • James Johnston says:
Justin, That's one of things that annoys me about the fan pages, they are limited and it can't do as much as you can a profile. Since they made the changes to the site, I like the fan pages more and I like investing time on them then on other social media sites. Hopefully they will be updating them with more features in the near future. Fan pages are getting more popular everyday. I have also noticed that some companies are investing more in their fan pages then on their websites.
      • Justin Germino says:
I agree, if they keep improving the functionality of the fan pages they could make it more attractive for business networking. Then maybe I would have used my personal profile only for close family/friends instead of everyone.
        • James Johnston says:
Thats my plan, if the fan page gets more functional I will seperate personal and business again.
  20. Tammy Matthews says:
Great article. Very informative. I use Facebook and Twitter, but not real sure how to use the twitter. I was just posting my blogs on there and daily quotes and retweeting anything I found that I was interested in. Pretty time consuming and you find you've been on there for hours. Then I realized that retweeting the articles I was posting on would make more comments on my Twitter. - anything else that works better? Not sure how to use the facebook filter, guess I'll have to go in and see if I can figure that one out! Thank you, Tammy
    • James Johnston says:
For me Twitter is the best then Facebook. But if they aren't working for you might want to try LinkedIn. But, you will have to spend time on there building your network, networking with the LinkedIn groups and post great articles (your articles plus other articles in your Niche). If you want to use Twitter and get the traffic, it takes time to get that traffic. You need followers, not just random followers, but high quality followers that are interested in your niche and will ReTweet and engage with you. I started getting more traffic from Twitter when I got over 2000 followers. Make sure you send out at least 1o - 20 Tweets scheduled so they are spread out through out the day. Try and share niche related links and addition to sharing links engage with your followers. Once you start doing that, then you should get more traffic back to your site.
  21. Kimberly Gauthier says:
One more thing. The plug in Tweet Old Posts has been great at getting old posts in the eye line of new readers. With as much information flowing across Twitter every second, this has been a helpful tool for me! And a related posts plug in has been great at keeping people on my site.
    • James Johnston says:
Both Tweet Old Posts and Related posts plugins are great tools to keep traffic on my site as well. Also found that using the InSites plugin works great for finding older content on your site so you can deep link back to them. I think this helps more than both the plugins you mentioned. If you haven't checked it out you should. Its worth the try.
  22. Kimberly Gauthier says:
I write a photography blog so I've found the following sites fantastic for generating traffic... Networked Blogs (Facebook) Other photography blogs / photography challenges Flickr (I put a link to my blog with all my pics, there is a no follow tag, but people do click to see my site) CommentLuv and other plugins on sites Guest blogging - this has been fantastic. I even guest blog on non photography sites, but add my photography and a credit/bio - brings traffic every time. I try to write 1-2 guest blog posts weekly
    • James Johnston says:
Hi Kimberly, I get a lot of traffic from Networked blogs, but I am not a big fan of the service. But now that I use Facebook fan pages, I get more traffic from Facebook then I do from Networked blogs. I haven't gotten much traffic from Flickr, but I am adding links back to my site and adding keywords and tags to help bring traffic from Flickr. I just need to spend some time working on building my network on Flickr and I should start getting more traffic from them.
  23. Manix says:
Don't know why I've not used Facebook till now - guess I didn't want to mix my personal life with blogging. I'll try this for sure - I know I'm really missing the big picture when I'm not using Facebook as a means to drive traffic.
    • James Johnston says:
Manix, That's how I felt! I used Facebook for my personal life only. But I realized that, that Facebook was about networking and you can still separate personal / buisness / blogging on Facebook just buy creating filters. After setting up filters, I still keep things separate.
  24. Chelsea Thomas says:
Hi James,I've been trying to use Facebook to generate traffic to my website as well. I currently have a fan page and a personal facebook account. I completely blanked on joining facebook groups. I've had great experience with joining linkedin groups to gain exposure and meet new people I'm sure Facebook groups would have just as much of an impact if not more! Thanks for the reminder!
    • James Johnston says:
Hi Chelsea, How is your Facebook Fan page doing. Are you getting traffic from it? As for the Facebook groups, I do not think they are doing as well as LinkedIn Groups would. But I have started using LinkedIn groups yet. I think Facebook groups are still really to knew and still need a lot of research and a great of users who like to help others out. If you can find a group like that, then I could see a good amount a traffic coming from a Facebook group.

Thats great! Depending on your niche and how well you work within your Facebook community shows that it is possible to get sells from a small following from Facebook. Now work on your community and build it up, maybe your sales will go up! :)
  27. Alex says:
Hello James, I really thank you for the crash course in social media traffic. I know that this networks can bring a lot of traffic (I don't know someone who says otherwise) if used correctly. I actually even now website which only rely on this kind of traffic, traffic brought via their twitter or facebook account+ some other miscellaneous social networks. I did try to make some pages and twitter accounts in order to get some traffic from this sources too, but I ended up failing, because I didn't had the time to do both SEO and spend my time on the social networks in order to interact with my followers or soon to be readers. Do you now any methods that don't use a lot of time or any at all :)) ?
    • James Johnston says:
Alex, I know how it is about time. Between work , school and freelance stuff, I simple do not have a lot of time to work on both. So I try and split my time between doing both. As to your question about a faster way to get the traffic, there really isn't a way. The fastest way to get traffic would be to spend time commenting on niche related sites and use social bookmarking sites. But of course these take a lot of your time as well.
  28. Mavis Nong says:

I can see the advantages to Facebook ads. I even think they probably do better than Google Ads do. I have seen several Facebook ads that have interested me enough to click on them. Where as with Google ads, I almost never click on them.

Social networking site, particularly facebook can twitter can prove very helpful for getting quality traffic. Being active on a Facebook page is important as well, just posting links with RSS graffiti doesnt help much... Great article!

Definitely lots of great information here. And even before I finished reading, I headed over to Dlvr.it and tried it out for myself. I think I went a little nuts adding some of my favorite RSS feeds, but all in all I think it'll work out pretty well. This way, I have a little more automation to my fan page; it's been getting a few fans, but I haven't been able to give it the attention it deserves just yet, and I have been wanting to do more with it for the last couple of weeks. Right now it has a whopping 48 fans. Joy. So my plan, after reading this post, is to do nothing but contribute other people's articles, leave comments on the actual blog posts Dlvr.it posts to my page, and participate in any conversation on my fan page that people engage in. Hopefully I'll see an increase in my Likes, and more activity on my page. Delena
    • James Johnston says:
Thats the way to do it Delena, I still haven't got much commenting on the fan page, but I do get a lot of traffic to the page and a lot clicks to my sites and to the others I share. Dlvr.It has its own stat system as well. After a month, look at your stats and see what feeds are doing well and remove the ones that aren't. How many feeds do you have? If you have a lot try schedule times for them so it doesn't look like your spamming everyone's feed.

Excellent article. With Facebook being part of EVERYONE's life, it is a gift to business owners to drive traffic to their site. Facebook has become a commonplace for business marketing and it is a fabulous tool to use. It is amazing how most business's have a "follow us on Facebook" on their advertisement. There are some instances where I just had to "like" a fan page, and I would get rewarded. Wow! Now I don't even remember how many times I have gone to that company's website and fan page to follow their trends.
    • James Johnston says:
Zarina, I have been seeing the reward for liking a few times. I also think its a great way to get people to follow you. Its like building an email list, give them a reason to want to like your fan page!
  44. Jitendra Singh says:
Like the idea, usually we do its vice versa. We promote facebook fan page by mean of our site.
    • James Johnston says:
I use to that do that, but we are not getting the traffic or getting new fan very quickly. So I decided to try and add content to the fan page to encourage fans to engage on the wall and visit the site as well.
  45. Dave Grimes II says:
You've done a great job creating a resource for business people who are not terribly familiar with Facebook. I'd love to see a follow-up article with specific examples of status updates and other posting strategies that have drawn well for you and your projects. Kind of a way for all of us to see what's worked well for you so we can adapt our own methods. Thanks for sharing!
    • James Johnston says:
Hi Dave, Actually I am compiling data for a follow up on Facebook traffic. Once I have more fans I will be able to complete my case study and I will present my findings...
  46. Danny says:
There is no doubt social media is the future in the way we buy and sell products and services. Facebook fan pages are easy enough to setup an any serious business should make it part of their marketing plan.
    • James Johnston says:
Danny, I totally agree. For those that do not want to use Twitter or doesn't get the traffic from that network, Facebook is the next best thing. Honestly, I think Facebook referral traffic will be the best way to market a business. They offer several different ways to do this and with the right community manager running the fan page, I can easily see this as a great investment for those companies using Social Media to their advantage.
  47. Brian Scott says:
Awesome post. Right now I'm like you were. My facebook fan page is just kind of running on autopilot via RSS feeds from my blog. I'm going to favorite your post to refer back to it, and try some of the things that are working for you. In particular I'll try feeding my fan page from some of my favorite sites that I read in relation to my blog. Like you, I want to do "friendly" things most of the time with my facebook friends on my personal page, not alienate them with politics, etc. Great post!
    • James Johnston says:
Thanks Brian, Yeah I use Facebook for everything. So its hard to keep my status separated. Try adding filters/friend groups so you can send status out that only certain friends will see them. Also make sure to engage those that are submitting and commenting on your fan page wall. This will bring in a lot more traffic and likes!
