3 Ways Community Managers Can Target Their Social Audience

January 1, 2012 - Last Modified: February 14, 2013 by Tammy Kahn Fennell

Social Business

When it comes to managing on behalf of someone else you have a big job. You are the first line of defense for all things social for a company. You are the public voice, the communication line for your entire community to reach the rest of your company through.

Before you even start broadcasting, you have to build a community. You need to attract the right audience to consume your message.

1. Cutting Through The Clutter

Make sure that you’re monitoring the right areas for the profiles you manage. This means geo-targeting and niche targeting and being there with a reply whenever something flags for your community.  Don’t waste your time on someone in Norway if the community you’re meant to be building is in New York.

Top Tools:

MarketMeSuite Reply Campaigns helps you geo-target a campaign and connect with people tweeting about your niche in specific locations, and Search.twitter.com allows you to put a radius on your searches.

Once you have a community in place, you want to reach them on every viable platform.

2. Going Cross Platform

You need to make sure that every message you send reaches (and is sometimes tailored for) all the relevant social platforms. We’re talking Twitter, Facebook, and Linkedin Profiles and Groups, and even Google Plus. Cross promotion is key to get a message far and wide and amplify the reach of each post.

Top Tools:

There are a number of Social Media Dashboards, but if you’re looking for a free option check out Tweetdeck, MarketMeSuite and Hootsuite free.

But what about when you are asleep but your community isn’t? You need to keep up the engagement even when you’re not there.

3. Schedule Posts

Social timing is very important. You can’t always be around when your customers are, so make sure to schedule up some Twitter and Facebook updates so that people on other timezones can find content to engage with you on. Just be sure you follow up with it the next morning!

Top Tools:

Buffer and Timely.is offer plugins for browsers so you can schedule up content on the go, and the dashboards mentioned in “Cross Platform” offer some bulk scheduling options.

Good post. I do SEO and search consulting and a lot of my clients are asking for social media ROI. I really like to expand my business beyond search but I would love to see a post on how social media increase a companies revenue for example. When I was working full time as SEO manager at Cooking.com, I ran a several social media ads campaigns, it was all waste of money. And their Facebook which has over 100k of following seems to bring in very little money in. And I highly doubt their "fans" shop at Cooking.com they probably go to Amazon. So if you could do a case study on how social media helps a business, I will promise I will share it and link to it from my blog.

Very interesting. That's something we hope to address in the next version of MarketMeSuite with robust analytics based on what actions you actually DID inside the app so you can see what is working :)

Hi Tammy! Happy New Year! Yes, scheduling and targeting are very very important! I always recommend taking an in-depth look at your blog or website's visitor statistics - see who is dropping by WHEN - for example, you might have posted an article that's getting mega-hots from China or Singapore - you need to tweet out to these folks but do it at a time when THEY are awake and online! Peaceful Blessings and Blog On!

Hi Tammy, Using the right tools makes your life so much easier. I like hootsuite, socialoomph and buffer. Focus on reaching out to as many crowds as possible - on different social networks - in your niche. Use tools to leverage your presence but make sure to interact. We do business with people, not bots, and depending solely on tools to spread the word about your opportunity will bring social media failure every time. Why? Not social anymore, just media, the media being a 1 way broadcasting station which becomes boring quickly. Engage, reach out, ask questions and provide answers. Use tools to manage your campaign but show up in person to build your campaign. Thanks for sharing your insight Tammy. RB
