You Are Not Getting Backlinks From CommentLuv

November 25, 2010 - Last Modified: July 3, 2012 by satrap

CommentLuv Backlinks

Almost all of the bloggers that I know and interact with, use CommentLuv. Perhaps, CommentLuv is one of the most favorited plug-ins of all time, and its a very beneficial plug-in, both for commentators and blog owners. Perhaps the biggest and most important benefit of CL is that it enables you to build deeplinks to your posts.

When you leave a comment on a CommentLuv enabled blog, you have the option to choose one post from up to 10 or more of your latest posts (displayed by FeedBurner) on your blog to be displayed on the bottom of your comment as your last post. And that is where you get the deeplink benefit. By leaving comments on CommentLuv enabled blogs, you are automatically building backlinks to your pages, many of which are pages and posts that otherwise you wouldn’t have spend muh time on to build backlinks for.

However, you might not be getting the deeplink benefit form CommentLuv, if you are using feedburner to pull RSS feeds from your blog, which most of you are!… Why you ask?…

Ok, lets see if you are actually getting those baclklinks:

Find one of the comments you have made on any CommentLuv enabled blog or better yet, make a comment here. Now, hover around the link that shows your last post. Look at the bottom corner of your browser where it shows the URL of the link. If the URL shown is the actual URL of your post, then you are good to go and don’t need to read the rest of this post!

But, if the URL is something like this “http://feedproxy.google.com/……” , then you are missing on a lot of backlinks (By the way, I checked most of people who comment regularly on FBs and most of you are missing those precious backlinks. That’s why I wrote this post.)

How to get your backlinks back from FeedBurner

Its very simple actually. You can fix the problem in 3 easy steps:

  1. Log on to your Feedburner account and click on the “Analyze” tab on the top left side of the menu
  2. Click on “Configure Stats” tab on the bottom left side of the left sidebar.
  3. Simply uncheck the “Item Link Clicks” box and click save.

Are your backlinks given back to you?… Not yet I am afraid! But you will get them back in a few hours. When you change the setting on your FeedBurner, it takes a few hours or so for the system to adjust. So, in a few hours, do the same test that I asked you to do earlier, now the URL shown should be the actual URL of your post. Now enjoy all of those great dofollow backlinks to your old posts and perhaps an increase in ranking for their targeted keywords as well!

By the way, the original idea for this post came from Joella at BlogsWithWings.com and her post titled Missing CommentLuv Backlinks?…. Thank you Joella.

Thank goodness for this post really, else I wouldn't even have noticed links were not directed to my blog. They're really sneaky that way.hehe

Thanks for this informative post. Do-follow backlinks are a really great way to increase your traffic. Another gold mine of traffic is posting on sites that list their (Top Commentors) in the sidebar. This is your opportunity to not only generate a backlink but also to get front page exposure. Some site typically take around 5-7 posts to make it to the top commentor list.Yours in Success...

This is the first time I have heard of this issue with Feedburner. You're very observant for noticing this. And thanks for sharing the info.

    • satrap says:
Rajan, its no magic, lol. Its just the way feedburnur settings are set up. It will work, though for some people, the past comments may not work, it would only apply to the comments made after the change.
  13. Tuan says:
I read a post mentioning this problem a few months ago and had to fix it immediately. I can't imagine how much link juice my blog had lost in nearly 2 years. This post will be very helpful for newbies.
    • satrap says:
Hey Tuan, yeah you do lose lots of link juice. Thankfully your links are all good.
  14. Alison Moore Smith says:
I love CommentLuv, but have found it to be really buggy. Have to reconfigure it fairly regularly just to keep it working for me. Fortunately, however, I did not have the link issue you mention. Good info for those who have the problem!
    • satrap says:
Hey Alison, Thats weird, I never had any problem with CL. I think if you contact Andy and let hime know, he may fix the problem in the next update.

Hmmm. Interesting post. I did not have the link issue but my CommentLuv feed was "banned" and I had to go unban it.
    • satrap says:
Yeah Rob, the banning thing happens to many people without them doing anything wrong. I had the same problem once. Its good to check your commentluv account once in a while to make sure everything is ok.
  18. Karan says:
I just used the fix-rss plugin and it worked for me.
    • satrap says:
Thanks for letting us know about the plugin Karen, though I would much rather fix it manually instead of adding another plugin that may slow down the blog. Anyway, thanks.
  19. Shiva says:
Nicely Explained Satrap, I too came across this problem with feedburner and commentluv a few days back and also posted about this in my blog too. I am sure this will help a lot of bloggers
    • satrap says:
Thanks Shiva . Yes , I m sure so many bloggers who use commentluv, do face this problem without even knowing about it.
  20. TJ McDowell says:
Holy cow - good catch! I use Google Reader, so no problem for me, but I looked through some of the recent posts on FB and I see what you're saying. Don't you think people should have been noticing that the links weren't showing up in their webmaster tools? Do you guys regularly check your webmaster tools for new links? I know they don't show up right away, but if you aren't getting new links 3 or 4 months after you've been linkbuilding, something is wrong.
  21. Bilal Ahmad says:
I am facing a problem with commentluv enabled blogs. When i type my blog domain in the Website field, nothing appear in the Commentluv area. But when i type mydomain.com/feed/ then my recent post appears in the commentluv area. Can you please help me in this how to fix it. I already have a register account with commentluv but still not working.
  22. Karan says:
Does it work even if the 30day redirection is on?!
  23. Dvd Training Video says:
I actually read about the CommentLuv Feedburner issue a few days ago and it was certainly an eye opener. I'm sure many are clueless about it. Good of you to include it for your readers.
  24. Claudia says:
Just installed comment luv after reading this...Thanks for the detailed and comprehensive explanation!
  25. Lisa says:
Great article, I'm new to SEO and marketing and can use all the help I can get. Thanks for sharing,
    • satrap says:
You are very welcome Lisa. I myself am new to the whole thing, but thankfully there are a lot of good resources out there that can help you learn everything you need to learn. Good luck.
      • Edwin says:
I followed your steps. Strange why its still the same
        • Hesham says:
It takes time till next update, give it a few hours!
      • Karan says:
I think famousbloggers is the treasure chest which must be explored by ever new comer to learn whatever they need to know about blogging.
  26. Blogfather says:
This tutorial is old news? I tried following those instruction and it seems Feedburner interface has long since changed. Can anyone shine some light on the true path to change these settings?
    • Blogfather says:
oops. My bad. The analyze tab is the default tab on feedburner. ;-)
  27. kytro360 says:
Thanks so much for the heads up.
    • satrap says:
You are welcome. FYI, Your link still points to feedburner. Have you not changed the setting yet? Because I knwo you left this comment yesterday, so if you had it set yesterday, it would have been fixed by now. By the way, if the guide isn't really clear for you (or anyone else for that matter) and you don't know how to fix it, contact me through my blog's contact page and I will be happy to fix the feedburner setting for you. It only takes a few seconds.
  28. Icechen1 says:
Luckily, I found out about this problem the very first day I started using CommentLuv. I guess I'm very very lucky to not make this mistake :)
  29. John Garrett says:
Holy Hannah!! I did not know about this and really never thought to look. I just a few seconds ago changed my Feedburner settings so hopefully I'll see the update ina few hours. Whew! The things you don't know...
    • Tia says:
Dude, John! I think I told you about this like three months ago! Then again, maybe not. :) Despite the number of posts on this topic it still seems to be news to so many people. Glad you got it sorted. Cheers, Tia P.S. Yes I totally just hijacked your comment.
      • John Garrett says:
LOL, Tia. You probably DID tell me but sometimes I'm like Lamont from 'Sanford & Son'...I'm a BIG DUMMY. It isn't changed yet but I'll check back in on it tomorrow. If it isn't fixed, silent tears of rage will be wept... :(
    • satrap says:
You are not alone John, most of us never even think about it, because its something that when you don't knwo it, it basically doesn't exist. I am glad you finally got it fixed John.
  30. Tom says:
Thanks Satrap, I will have a look at this one too!
  31. Alex Wise says:
Wow, this is quite concerning. i will have to look into it, thanks!
    • satrap says:
Yeah it is, considering that one click makes the difference between having a lot of backlinks VS no backlinks from ComLUV. Thanks for commenting Alex.
      • Alex Wise says:
No worries! Great blog you have here :) Very informative.
  32. Siddharth Goyal says:
Also, I don't think the links on commentluv are not automatically do follow or are they? One needs to install a separate plugin in order to make their blog do follow.
    • satrap says:
If I understand your question correctly, yes they are traumatically dofollow (the link from the "last post by..." section. Perhaps Andy could explain this farther more.
  33. shanker Bakshi says:
Even lots of comments on this blog pointing to http://feedproxy.google.com/...
    • Hesham says:
I hope they have done the change, it would then take some time to apply!
      • satrap says:
I think everybody should do it, considering that it only takes a few seconds to set it right and a few hours to have it the right way.
    • shanker Bakshi says:
oops ! me too need to fix this...
    • satrap says:
Yes they are. That is why I thought it will be appropriate to post this article here.
  34. satrap says:
Mani, Estava, Isabel, Teresa, wasim, Sheila, Phil, Kevin, Rahul and rest of you guys, you are very welcome. Glad it was a helpful post, though the credit should go to Joella (who sadly has to sell her BlogsWithWings blog to focus on her other blog) who raised the flag for me. Thank you all for leaving your comments.
  35. Mani Viswanathan says:
I have to admit that I didn't know about this before. Though I gave it a thought, but never tried to research on this. Thanks to you & Joella.
  36. Estava Morioka says:

    • satrap says:
You are welcome Kevin. Give it a few hours and it should be good to go. Thanks for commenting.
  43. Maria Muir says:
I just checked my commentluv link and sure enough it was the feedburner link. Changed the settings so hope to see some improvement shortly, always wondered why I wasn't getting any backlinks. Thanks for the post and easy to follow guide.
    • satrap says:
Maria, as long as you change the setting, it will go back to normal in a few hours. Good luck.
  44. Klaus says:
You ARE actually getting the back link since Feedburner uses a 301 redirect back to your site - but obviously it's not as good as going straight to your site, not through feedburner. But, some backlink (or link juice, whatever people call it), still flows. I recommend doing the 3 steps though, to get the most benefits.
    • satrap says:
Thanks for the info Klaus, I thought no link juice would pass through feedburner. Good to knwo. Thank you for taking time to comment.
  45. Daniel Sharkov says:
Sometime ago I read about that issue and although I was pretty sure that I shouldn't have any problems, it turned out the other way around. After giving a more closer look on some blogs I was commenting on, I discovered that from some I was getting a backlink, while others were pointing to some Google's site. The strange thing was that after checking my Feedburner options, everything was fine there. The 'Item Link Clicks' was unchecked. After an hour or two everything got back to normal. LOL!
    • Satrap says:
Hey Daniel, Yes its amazing how one small change can mean the difference between having hundreds and even thousands of backlinks and havering non.
  46. Rahul says:
Very clear post and i loved reading about this topic ! thank You for the details you shared ! i just never knew FeedBurner and i guess it is simple and helpful a lot :)
    • Satrap says:
Feedburner is a great tool. It makes our job as bloggers much easier.
  47. Andy Bailey says:
excellent post Satrap, thanks for pointing this out and explaining it in detail!
    • satrap says:
You are welcome Andy. I and the rest of the blogging community owe it all to you and your creativity that lets you came up with this awesome plug-in called commentluv. By the way Andy, whoever namd this plug-in was a genies, the name fits the plug-in so well. Thanks.
