5 Ways to Effectively Promote Blog Posts

June 24, 2010 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Devesh 2,493

Blog Promotion

You have wrote an awesome post and it’s starting to feel that no one’s paying attention on it. No comments, no retweets on your blog posts.

Let’s face it, there’s no sense in creating a blog that only you are going to read. You need traffic, which in turn will turn into commentators, subscribers, which in turn will make your blog more successful.

If you are looking to promote your blog posts on your blog more effectively, here are 5 ways to promote your blog posts:

1. Social bookmarking sites

One of the most easiest way to get targeted traffic. It is really a great way to boost traffic, backlinks, marketing to your blog. I usually submit my blog posts to BlogEngage, Sphinn and MMOSocialNetwork.

More bookmark links of your blog posts means more popularity of your blog posts.

Here are 30+ Inspirational Social Bookmarking Sites.

PS. For Blogegnage you have to be invited to be part of the community.

2. Discussion Forums

You have to actively get involved in discussions and try to be as resourceful as possible, most of the discussion forums allow you to post links in your signature these links help you to drive visitors to your site. I usually active on Digital Point and warrior Forums.

Digital Point also allows you to put up your own blog posts as threads.

You can find forum that suits your niche on BigBoards, this site lists hundreds of forums arranged according to categories and traffic.

3. Blog commenting

It is very effective method for getting traffic to your blog posts. Commenting on related blogs is one of my favorite way to drive targeted traffic, backlinks. I usually comment on some blogs such as FamousBloggers, Problogger, Dailyblogtips and techcrunch, which are all related to my niche. The more you interact with the blogger, the more they’ll notice you.

Take the time to leave a useful comment often enough, don’t just write “nice post” or “thanks”. Keep in mind spamming will only hurt your blog.

4. Newsletter

Are you building mailing list on your blog and you’ve written a killer blog post, then include a link to it in your next newsletter. Doing this will drive traffic but also signal to your readers that it’s a Killer post that you feel deserves their attention. If you not have a mailing list, than start building it now.

5. Social media

It’s simply an incredible viral means to drive a large amount of sustainable traffic to any website over a period of time.

One of the best ways to succeed on Social media is to get really involved. It was built for genuine people who want to talk as humans and make connections.

I try to submit every article to social media websites like Twitter, Digg, Delicious.

Do You Have Anything to Add?

You need to publish content, that's interesting and relevant to your prospective readers. And make your blog interesting to the search engines. Content plus Search Reputation leads to traffic, and in turn to Followers, readers, and subscribers - and there is your desired marketing and promotion to a larger audience. Thankyou for sharing with us :)

  3. trish mullen says:
Hi Dev I first thought this site today was just full of technical stuff used by 'expert bloggers' but it's not, it's really educational for someone like me who is just starting to use Blogging as a major marketing strategy. I'm mastering them all one by one so just moved onto blogging now and so much to learn here, I'm wondering 'where do I start?" :) Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise, Trish
  4. Cheryl says:
Hi Dev, One of my favorite ways to drive traffic to my blog posts is social bookmarking. My favorites are twitter, facebook and stumbleupon. Plus, I have my own mini social bookmarking area on my blog. I call it TGIF Links. Come over and submit the URL to one of your posts.
  5. Jacinta Dean says:
Hi Dev, I love blog commenting, hence the 100 blog comments challenge! Ooops on that one. I think that challenge was a lot bigger than everyone thought it would be! I have only just started getting into social bookmarking. I am a little slow at picking things up sometimes, however once I understand the concept there is nothing stopping me! It is just coordinating a routine and that can be tough around a 3 year old! Hope everything has been going well for you with the challenge. I have tallied up the comments on both the posts you have submitted. Fingers crossed everyone eventually gets around to everyone's blogs and comments. See you back here soon! Cheers Jacinta :D
  6. Dawn Kay says:

Dev- awesome site. I love the layout. It is very clean and refreshing to check out! I think something that is often overlooked is creating a bigger ping list. There are some great resources out there that help you broadcast that you updated. It can never hurt! Jerry
  8. Connie Chen from Seed Of Magic -True Beauty Tips says:
Hello Devesh, It is a great information you are sharing here. Like what you said, the social bookmarking site is very effective, and it can connect these related bloggers together. Now I only use Twitter as a start since I am a new blogger, and I think I am going to focus on creating my new content and visit forums as much as I can. Thank you very much for your post. Cheers. Connie
  9. Jennifer says:
Hi, Dev This post and all the comments have been really informative! I hadn't even considered social bookmarking and newsletters! Do you happen to know if there are widgets that automatically submit to various social bookmark sites? Also - I love the way you're really money-tized your blog. Please can you tell me how you get those attractive little "box" ads down the right hand side? This 100 Comment challenge is really turning into a "100 lesson" course for me! Jennifer

  11. Martyn Boaden says:
Hi Devesh Sometimes bloggers get carried away with blogging and forget that the only reason they are doing it is to either get traffic or make sales so your advice is excellent!
  12. Andreas Spyrou says:
Hi Devesh, These are excellent ways to promote your blog post. My favorites are "1. Social bookmarking: By social bookmarking your post you will easily get backlinks from authority websites and new people can find your blog. However my top way is "4. Newletter: By emailing your list about your new blog post, your subscribers trust your more and build a better relationship with them. Of course if you have a big list (and a good relationship with them) you can receive lots of traffic in 1,2 days or in just a few hours! This is my opinion.. Take care, Andreas
  13. Sally Cevasco says:
Hi Devish, Wow, you've got a lot going on here! I had a hard time getting down to the comment section, kept getting distracted and signing up for things, etc. You certainly know what you doing with regard to promoting your posts! Also, I hadn't even heard of some of the sites up there where you can share your posts. I bet having that really helps. Take care, Sally

Hi Dev, Seen you around some of the blogs I check out so your techniques must work :-) Guest posting is a massive traffic builder if you can get a spot on the right blog. A good tip is to write a killer post and then guest a killer one also. This gives all readers nothing but good content from two blogs. It will keep them coming back. Excellent post Dev

Hi Devesh, Well getting involved in this 100 blog contest has really given my blog exposure and an increase in traffic. Blog commenting really does work, ok so people may think I don't want to spend hours looking through peoples blog and leaving comments. But it so much more as you can interact with other marketers and get some great ideas from others. Yes I use all of your traffic sources but not really as much as I should. One more I would like to add to get traffic and backlinks is through Press Release. Cheers Craig
    • Devesh says:
That's awesome to hear. I'm agree with you Blog commenting is just much more than getting traffic, it's all about building relationship with other bloggers. Thanks for the awesome comment Craig.
  22. Pete Carr says:

  23. John McNally says:
An excellent summary Devesh, you've made me realise I need to get on to some forums. I've had a look at the Warrior forum, but didn't do anything with it. 24. Robyn says:
Hi Dev Great post!! Yes, you do wonder sometimes why you bother to write a great post for your blog and nobody reads it or nobody leaves a comment. Didn't they like it, was it boring, was I too pushy or am I just not getting enough of the 'right' people coming to my blog. Thanks for sharing your ideas on how to get more traffic, it is a great list and I will be checking out all of them ASAP. Take care. Robyn
    • Devesh says:

Hey Devesh Excellent post. Your 5 points are a great resource to get things going when it comes to traffic generation. I am fairly new to blogging so I found your ideas very helpful. Have you you discovered any good forums for sharing ideas for online marketing it is always good to meet new people? Out of the 5 points that you listed which do you consider to be the most important point to implement? Also is there any easy way to move the side bar on your blog as I had difficulty reading all the text.

    • Dev - Technshare.com says:
That's Exactly right. Thanks for commenting.
  34. Colleen says:
Thanks for the tips Dev. Another way to promote blog entries is through syndication. In fact, yesterday I paid a guy $5.00 to syndicate my rss feed to 240ish locations.
    • Dev says:
That's really a great idea Collen :). Thanks for commenting.
  35. Irena Chirashnya says:
Devesh, Very good advices. However, they are mostly for English language bloggers. I recently started my blog which is in Russian. Any suggestions of how to promote non English language blog, specifically in Russian? Anyone? Thanks, Irena.
    • Dev says:
Hey Irena, I suggest you to do commenting on russian blogs and forum posting. Another thing i would suggest you is to use a language translator tool... !! Thanks for the nice comment.

I agree about the commenting. It really does help.
    • Dev says:
Thanks for the comment Tamy :).
  37. Patrick says:
Hi Devesh, you have mentioned it all, from Social Bookmarking to Social media. Those tips are more than enough to promote a blog post.Though I would like to add some particular sites in that list. I think you should promote your post at 'Blog Catalog Community'.It works. You will definitely get some long time readers from there. Now you have mentioned Twitter but I would also like to mention another site i.e. Friendfeed. It a wonderful community and you may easily get readers and friends there too.
    • Dev says:
Thanks for the awesome advice man. I'm defiantly going to checkout friendfeed and blog catalog. Thanks for the nice comment.
  38. Mani Viswanathan says:
Thanks..I got some new social sites to deal with..will try in submitting my posts to them in future.
    • Dev says:
That's great to hear.. Mani. Thanks for the nice comment.
  39. Bryan says:
Hi Devesh, I think its very important to get to know people in your own niche and participate in discussions on social media sites, just like you said. Lots of people tend to think that the more social media sites you join the better. I think the important thing here is quality and not quantity. Great article again!
    • Dev says:
That's exactly right. Thanks for the commenting.
  40. ashok says:
I think your list is an excellent help: I do have to say I haven't tried the newsletter promotion yet, and I don't think I want to. Despite all the success stories I've heard online about starting a newsletter and getting people from their e-mail account, I'm not convinced that's the way to go. Melvin mentioned in another post that he might comment on 100-150 blogs a day. That actually makes more sense to me: engage the Web, see if things will work out.
    • Dev says:
Hey Ashok, Building list is something that every blogger should do from beginning. Blog commenting is anther great way to get targeted traffic. Thanks for the nice comment.
  41. Stephanie Smith says:
I have not tried forums as a way to promote my blog. I appreciate the url for the list of them. I also appreciate the comments cautioning about what is considered excessive self promotion in some of them. I would have blundered right into that one.
    • Dev says:
Hey Stephanie, I'm getting good amount of traffic from forums. Thanks for the nice comment.
  42. bbrian017 says:
Hi Dev great post. I do everything you mention here. I'm a big fan of self promotion and marketing. I do everything on my own and to date it's worked out great. I market in forums, social networking sites and try to build online relationships daily.
    • Dev says:
Hey Brian, That's great to hear. You're really doing great Job. Thanks for commenting.
  43. Ankit says:
Insightful methods Devesh. Newsletters are i think one of the best ways to create long term community around the blog and that ensures referral traffic too.
    • Dev says:
Hey Ankit, That's exactly right. Thanks for the nice comment.
  44. Dana says:
I promote my blog post through dig, blogengage, and blog commenting. It is working great so far.
    • Dev says:
Hey Dana, Blog commenting is one of my favorite way to promote blog posts. Anyways, Thanks for the nice comment.
  45. Vishal Sanjay says:

  46. Dino Vedo says:
Great list Devesh. Appreciate the great information and will definitely use this to increase my traffic to my blog! Thanks again, All the best, Dino Vedo
    • Dev says:
Hey Dino, Thanks for your kind words man. Thanks for the support. I really appreciate it.
  47. Sire says:
I've used all those methods but blog commenting is my favorite by far. I actually tried using MyLikes as an advertiser to see how that would go and I was quite surprised at the outcome.
    • Dev says:
Hey Sire, That's awesome to hear man. Great work. Thanks for the nice comment.
  48. Jason Jumat says:
These days if you aren't networking and utilizing social media it's a matter of whether you (your website) will be a brand that can be trusted. Using social bookmarking sites and the likes increases your chances at succeeding and using social networking sites to help you brand your site.
    • Dev says:
Hey Jason, Yeah, social media sites are must. Thanks for commenting.
  49. Seun Kilanko says:
Good and informative piece,Devesh! Link building is really important to the growth of any blog. I’ve been trying my best with blog commenting. Forum participation and social bookmarking are the ones I need to take serious now. Cheers! Seun Kilanko
    • Dev says:
Hey Seuyn, That's exactly right. Thanks for the nice comment.
  50. benwaynet says:
Haven't tried a newsletter or forums yet. I always thought forums for bloggers didn't make sense and I've spend my energy on the social sites (blogengage, bloggerluv, facebook, and twitter)
    • Dev says:
Hey benwayet, Yeah, Social media is really great but i think you should try forums and newsletter. Thanks for the nice comment.
  51. Asad says:
Nice post Devesh.I usually use blog commenting and article submission directories such as ezine and hubpages to promote my posts.
    • Dev says:
Hey Asad, That's great to hear. Blog commenting is one of my favorite way to promote new blog posts. Anyways, Thanks for the nice comment.
  52. Ileane says:
Hi Dev, I'd like to add WebsiteBabble to the list of forums to join. I've been a member for almost a year and I've learned a lot and met some fantastic people. And just as Kristie mentioned there is a minimum requirement before you can include links in your signature, but once you get past that it will attract a good amount of traffic to your blog. Blog Engage and MMOSocialNetwork are a must!
    • Dev says:
Exactly right. Btw..I never heard about website babble. Thanks for the nice comment.
  53. Nabeel says:
Great tips Dev. I learned about Blog Commenting from Dev. He gave me a list of good blogs, including famousbloggers. I use forum marketing and blog commenting. You are correct about big-boards.com, it is an awesome resource. It lists so many forums, that you will never run out of forums! Also, Dev I will be asking for more blogs from you in your blog post on the list of 10 good blogs! Thanks for the post! Nabeel
    • Dev says:
Hey Nabeel, That's awesome to hear. Thanks for your compliments. I really appreciate it. Thanks for the nice comment.
  54. Mike says:
Not something new, but a useful post for everyone. Thanks :)
  55. Ryan Hanzel says:
Excellent post bud, I will definitely be using these tips. I am now checking out the Social Bookmarking sites you listed above and the Message Board link also. Did not know of any of these before this post. I hope I can use these resources to be as beneficial to me as they were to you. Will be checking back more often, great blog :)
    • Dev says:
Ryan, That's awesome to hear man. Thanks for the compliments.
  56. Sourav says:
Excellent tips for blog promotion. I have just started a new blog, and I am using all the above tips except the newsletter. From the comments that this post has received, I think many bloggers miss out that part of the promotion. I need to give a serious thought to it.
    • Dev says:
Hey Sourav, That's great to hear. Thanks for the nice comment.
  57. Anna Haller says:
I've used all the methods except the newsletter tactic which I definitely need to get into. Blog commenting has helped me a lot and I know other people have been getting great responses on forums too but haven't been really active in them either. Another thing I might add is guest posting which is an effective way to drive traffic to your site and get your posts noticed as well. I've only done it once but would like to do it more often but it significantly drove traffic to my site. Thanks for these tips Dev! Anna
    • Dev says:
Anna, Glad to see you here. Blog commenting is one of the awesome and easiest way to promote blog posts. Thanks for the nice comment. I really appreciate it.
  58. Ray says:
Cheers for this. I am going to try the forum tip, checking out big-boards.com now :) The biggest problem I find is knowing where I fit in since my site is kind of different. I think I am slowly honing in on where I fit into the landscape.
    • Dev says:
Hey Ray, Thanks for your kind words. You can get more tips at my blog. Thanks for commenting.
  59. Steve says:
The important thing, I am finding, is that you have to be active on the social bookmarking sites you are submitting your blog to. It's kind of the same idea as forums: if you're only writing about your own blog, it'll be a turnoff, but if you are generous in sharing other people's content and interacting with their content, the law of reciprocity will reward you down the road.
    • Dev says:
Hey Steve, You're absolutely right. Thanks for the nice comment.
  60. Murlu says:
Great work Dev and great that you mentioned BigBoards - so many forums to find on there it can be mind bogging but definitely worth it.
    • Dev says:
Hey Murray, Thanks for your kind words and support murray. I really appreciate it. Thanks
  61. Sunil Jain says:
Well written Dev :) I follow all the ways except the newsletter , Need to concentrate on it also and when it comes to discussion forums , there are many forums which provides signatures , so there not only promote your posts but also try to give the members more of what they want in terms of knowledge and guidance :) Just correct the url of the bigboards buddy :) it is http://www.big-boards.com/ Once again Keep it up as you have sticked on to the BASICS of Blogging :) :D
    • Dev says:
Hey Sunil, Newsletter is something that no blogger should miss and you're absolutely right about forums. Thanks for the nice comment. I really appreciate it.
  62. CJ says:
Awesome post Dev! It's nice to see you on Famous Bloggers! CJ CJ's last blog ..SEO Content That Helps You Get More Visitors
    • Dev says:
      Thanks for commenting CJ.
  63. Kristi Hines says:
Very good tips. Be careful in forums - each one has a different opinion about what self promotion is - even following one admin's instructions about adding a link to your signature could get you banned by another one. I like Digital Point, PromoJunkie, Bloggeries, and Dream Team Money, all of which actually appreciate having people who know what they're talking about share information, as opposed to some of the others. And when it comes to social bookmarking sites like Sphinn, just be sure that your post fits in their categories, otherwise it will get removed (or not receive enough votes to make it to the first page).
    • Dev says:
Hey Kristi, Hmm.. You're absolutely right. Another great forum is Warrior forums. And Yeah, sphinn only allows high quality posts. Thanks for the nice comment kristi.
    • DiTesco says:
@Devesh. Good tips. I think that all of them are pretty effective (except for forums *see below and Kristi's comment) and in my experience, and I a not selling anything here, the most effective has still been commenting in order peoples blogs. Do this in particular on the community that relates to your topic and if they have comluv enabled, all the better :) *Agreed with you here Kristi. People should really be careful in forums as there are those who do not understand if one is sharing simply good information. I have encountered some certain difficulties at WarriorForum and your advice is duly noted.
  64. Joe Boyle says:
Forum posting and blog commenting are two great ways to get your name out there, while sharing your opinions and URL, too. You can also learn a lot from other forum posters or blog articles! I've recently been using StumbleUpon, Digg, and other social bookmarking sites, too. They are a great way to also get your name, content, and URL out there! Great post, rock on!
    • Dev says:
That's great to hear Joe. And Yeah, Blog commenting is of the awesome and easiest way to promote blog posts. Thanks for commenting.
  65. Ryan says:
All great tips Devesh, thanks for the BigBoards mention, never heard of it. I use these techniques plus a few different pinging services: pingomatic.com and zimbio.com. Zimbio has been good to me. More than a few cash gifting articles have topped google for months on end after pinging on zimbio. It's a keeper. Ryan
    • Dev says:
