5 Timeless Lessons Bloggers Can Learn From Spammers

August 2, 2012 - Last Modified: March 29, 2014 by Harshit Singhal

Lessons For Bloggers

We all hate spammers, in fact we detest, abhor and loathe them, for they fill our in-boxes with unsolicited emails and try to usurp our hard-earned money. However, not everything about them is bad. In fact I recently came across a mind-boggling fact that surprised me no end.

A team of researchers have found out that on average a single spammer manages to rake in as much as $7000 per day! Now that’s some serious numbers! If they make such huge money, they must be doing a few things right, so why not learn something from them!

Here are some timeless lessons that you as a blogger can learn from these spammers in your quest to make money online.

1. Give it all you have

Spammers have to go through a lot in their quest to fool people and make a living. However, they struggle their way through it and give it all they have. They have to keep sending unsolicited spam mails to millions and millions of people over and over again since the conversions suck.

However, they look at the bigger picture and are not worried about getting immediate results. They believe that what they are doing will work and no matter if their initial efforts are wasted, they keep doing it as they know that sooner or later their hard work will bear fruit.

If you blog with the same mental attitude and make it a point to give it your all while blogging, nothing can stop you from becoming an A-list blogger.

2. A great sales copy works

Although most spammers are not great at English, they work hard to produce excellent sales copies that impress the customers and inspire a call to action from them. Without a great sales copy, their customers will never buy the product and they will not be able to make even a single sale.

In the same way, bloggers and marketers should also work hard at their copyrighting skills and not let their lack of language skills get in the way of creating great content that has an impact on the readers.

3. Work at it despite all odds

Do you know how many emails it takes for a spammer to produce a sale? It’s well above the 1 million mark. In fact a recent research of over 350 million email messages shows that spammers have to send over 12.5 million emails before they make a sale. That equals a conversion rate of less than 0.00001%.

Spammers know this fact very well and despite all the odds against them, they still keep sending emails, hoping that someone somewhere in the world will fall into the trap and they will make a few dollars from that sale. Having the same attitude in blogging, despite the huge competition and Google’s fickle algorithm changes, will make a huge difference in the long run.

4. Get to know the hot products

Spammers have to keep track of what’s hot in the industry and then try to cash in on that. They spend time in analyzing the market dynamics and getting to know their target audience. They use a variety of online tools for this purpose, such as Alexa, Yahoo trends, Adwords tool and Google Trends which gives them a fair idea of what’s going to work. For example, if tablet PC’s are the latest fad, then they’ll make sure their campaigns focus on just that so as to make full use of the current hottest trend.

You should do the same, and utilize these tools to know the latest trends and try to make use of this data to profit in some way or other, without the spamming part of course.

5. Invest in your blogs

A lot of bloggers and marketers I know make the mistake of just saving whatever profits they manage to make and do not invest in any tools or softwares that might be helpful for them in the long run. On the other hand, spammers buy mailing lists and automated tools that they know will help save a lot of their time, which they can use for other important things such as getting more subscribers on their mailing list.

We should follow their example and invest a part of our profits in buying important tools that will come in handy in the long-term and help us to expedite the growth of our blogs.

Many people lag in investing in a blog and they don't really care about the content, there objective are just to make money , after-all getting more visits and making them stay is the more important element which should be hovered upon. great list of points mentioned here!!
  2. Christa says:
Spamming is definitely a serious problem since there are chances that it may overwhelm your blog with traffic and eventually crashes your network thus inhibiting the actual users to access the blog. Great take on that Harshit.

Hi Harshit, that was really a mind blowing post. There are tons of things to learn on this earth, we can learn different lessons from almost anyone. Spammers can also be a good source of getting motivation sometimes, they work too hard to fool the people :P.
  4. Joe Seals says:
Give it all you got. I really like that point. Nothing can stop you when you are "All In", motivating post. Thanks!
  5. Samuel says:
Almost all I guess, will certainly imagine that making money from writing a blog is easy in actuality....that's what i think
  6. Nick Stamoulis says:
Seems crazy that you could actually learn a thing or two from the spammers. They may be annoying, but they only exist because what they do works, even if only to a small degree. I think the most important takeaway here is to not give up. The internet is a competitive place, if you don't have that drive you will never succeed.

Though it seems to be little funny but that's the real truth we do learn from spammers . if there is no spammers how can we improve our security and technical skills ..it is them who makes us to think out off the box and thus we come out with new security services .....people say we learn from mistakes , in blogging we learn from spammers :)lol

Forgot to say, yes finding hot products is very important and it was the biggest challenge to me. You want to have good relationships with your affiliate managers.
  9. Adam C. says:
Harshit, Just thought I would share my experience in emailing. I was doing direct unsolicited advertisement (in US it's not called spam if you provide unsubscribe link) for about a year and I can say that conversion rates are not that bad - about 1%. Most spammers however, judging from my own inbox, don't bother to write a good copy and use creatives provided by advertisers, and don't keep track of emails sent in past. These are the two biggest reasons I think they have poor conversion rates.
  10. Lewis LaLanne says:
I believe one of the most important lessons that can be learned from spammers is in how they craft their offers. Spammers put their offers in front of any email address they can get their hands on which explains why their response rates are so abysmal. The "Who" who's seeing your offer is critical to your success. But even if the "Who" is dead on perfect, if your offer sucks, even with the best written copy in the world, you won't get the kind of conversion you like. So there's actually two lessons to be had - pay very close attention to the "Who" you're attracting with your content and copywriting and be very conscious about putting yourself precisely in front of them and . . . Craft irresistible offers. This is where you can learn from the top Spammers - how they put together an offer that seems too good to be true. You want to do this. You want your prospects to be thinking, "This guy is crazy for giving so much for so little." You want the other person to get the better end of the deal. And where you'll differ from most spammers is when you deliver on your goods and promise. Make sure the other person gets the better end of the deal and I flat out guarantee you'll be taken care of over the long haul with all the good word of mouth and accrued reciprocity you gain.
  11. James says:
I like it where you mentioned about purchasing tools in order to make your blog successful in the long term run. The blog is a child for the blogger and he cannot let the spammers make wrong use of it. Hence, at least a small amount from his earnings can be invested for the blog and its maintainence.
  12. Faissal Alhaithami says:
Yes, you're absolutely right about making the mistake of not investing in one's blog. If you are truly serious about maximizing the profits, you should start to make some wise decisions and invest in your blog to take your business to the next level. Thanks for the great tips, Harshit.
  13. Sterling says:
This is great, the thing i respect about spammers is their no quit attitude. They always go all out at it as there is so much failure with spamming its a volume game to get those few successes. If this mentality was applied to almost any other trade/business than success is much easier to come by.
  14. Jeremy says:
Interesting post. While spammers are pretty damn annoying, they wouldn't keep doing what they're doing unless it's making them money. Something can also be said for their risk taking. As bloggers we can take on a bit of risk with controversial posts or by just going against the norm. Too many bloggers think they have to follow a certain game plan to build up their blog. It's when they think creatively and take some risks that their blogs can really take off.
  15. Ben says:
Awesome post Harshit. I definitely think there are a few good takeaways to learn from spammers. I do enjoy their creativity from week to week. their attempts change each and every week. To someone like me it's entertaining, and a bit annoying, but you do have to give them credit for their consistency. Hard to believe they can make up to $7000 a day though pushing that crap.
  16. Kimberly Gauthier says:
Such a fantastic point. What I can learn from spammers is not to take each "no thanks" personally. Welcome back again! It's great to read Famous Bloggers again.
  17. Tom Whitehall says:
It's a fine line unfortunately, one between adding good quality comments and discussion to the post, while not linking to poor quality or spammy websites. However, sometimes compromise is the best way to go about it; allowing a couple of spammers space on your blog, although not ideal, may on the whole add more value top the overall post. A good article, thanks.

  19. Anton Koekemoer says:
Hi Harshit,Yes , I do agree – One is quick to name and shame the spammers – but I have to take my White hat off to the blackhat people , they are really hard workers – despite an ever increasingly difficult platforms and communities to spam.
  20. James says:
This really seems interesting, yes you are right, it is a lot of hardwork for spammers before they can enjoy some of our hard earned cash. But I never knew about hoe all this goes. 1 million spam mails sounds an extremely big number. On the other hand, the sales copy must have cost them a lot.
  21. Alan Tay says:
Give it all you have - I like this, Harshit! Most money maker blogger wannabe, don't give in everything. Most I guess, will think that making money from blogging is easy but in reality, it is not at all. Probably there are way too many spam on 'work from home and get rich' is making them to think that blogging is easy to make money. So, giving all you have, is another lesson learn from me here.
  22. Dave Lucas says:
Harshit - your post is worth a million dollars! I believe every contact one makes on the internet presents a unique opportunity to meet or make a friend or connection. Yes, even with spammers - and even with trolls! You just have to be willing to negotiate! Blog On!
  23. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Harshit, Give it all you have from a high energy place. No desperation, which many spammers show. If you act calmly, confidently and intelligently, while persisting like heck, you will become successful. Interesting take here. The main issue with spamming: the act comes from a place of fear, not faith. Fear-filled, persistent acts bring terrible results. So if anything we can learn a kick butt lesson in persistence from spammers. Thanks Harshit! Ryan
  24. Ahmed Safwan says:
Thank for this tips. Even spammers we can benefit from them. Thanks for this great post idea.
