4 of the Most Effective Ways to Get More Subscribers

February 15, 2011 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Devesh 1,525

Email Subscribers

One of the most common challenges among bloggers is how to build mailing list fast. Many of you already know about growing your mailing list with commenting, guest posting, forums, etc., but today i’m going to talk about some additional simple techniques to grow your newsletter subscribers.

1. Adswaps

One of the most effective and fastest way to grow your mailing list. All you need is a small list and a free item relevant to your niche which you have the rights to give-away in your opt-in email marketing. You can even start with a list of 200-300. You should have at least one high converting free product to offer to prospects.

Warrior Forums is one of the most active forums where you can find a lot of marketers for doing swaps.

2. Popup Domination

Another fast way to build your mailing list is popup domination plugin for WordPress.

Popup Domination is a Premium WordPress Plugin that will increase your opt-in rate by 250-350%. The Plugin has done wonders for hundreds of people already, and it can do the same for you.

3. Subscribers Magnet

This is another awesome plugin to grow your mailing list fast. It combines five never-before-used techniques to rapidly grow your list. Many bloggers use it, including Daniel, Pat, and Ana.

Using subscribers magnet is very easy and it integrates with most email marketing applications (e.g., Aweber, iContact, ConstantContact), so getting the plugin to work is straight forward.

4. FaceBook

Facebook can be a great way to grow your email list. Many people don’t use Facebook to build their email list but it can be very useful. All you need to do is customize your facebook fan page.

The best way to design a Facebook landing page is hire a porfessional from fiverr or digitalpoint forums. If you can’t hire, check out this tutorial:  TUTORIAL: Facebook Landing Page Template (PSD Included)

Building a list is very important because it makes it easier for you to communicate with your readers; it also makes it easier for you to make money blogging.

Devesh, I have never had the need for a tool to help me integrate any type of subscriber tool into any of my scripts, but then again, not everybody has the time to just sit around and figure it out. However, I have to confirm you recommendation of a popup to gain subscribers. It simply works. It definitely has for me. Step one...good content, step two...popup. I just leave mine on now. Solid list, Devesh. Mark

Great post Devesh and on time for me. I have been thinking about giving my list a push before I come out with a product that I have been working on for a long time. I agree about warrior forum. It truly is a great place to find other bloggers and marketers to do ad swaps with. Thanks.
  3. Sourish says:
im yet to try this pop up thing . Need to research about it a bit so that my readers dont find it intrusive .
    • Codrut says:
For non intrusiveness I recommend Subscribers Magnet, that's what it was created for. I've took part in its initial launch when I was hired to write all kinds of emails and promotional materials, including the sales letters and video script so I know how powerful that plugin is.
  4. Tinh says:
Popup and Magnet should be in one as they have same functions but different layouts :-) Thanks
  5. Mavis Nong says:
Hey Dev, You look different in the picture here :) Great tips you're sharing here. I have been using Subscribers Magnet with great success and I highly recommend it. I dislike popups and I don't use them on my blog. Thanks for sharing your insights, Dev. All the best, Mavis
  6. Navid says:
Hey Devesh, Great post, I have been writing about and talking about the pre-launch phase of building a business a lot lately, and find that getting subscribers or enrollments for an email is a simple step, but one that often goes overlooked. People mistake traffic or page views for success, when number of op-ins is a better metric for success. Thanks again.
  7. Extreme John says:
I hadn't heard of subscribers magnet before, thanks for the tip on that bad boy :)
  8. TJ McDowell says:
I think what I don't like too much about a few of these methods is that they're interrupting the user's regular flow of events - meaning that the ads are an interruption to the real content they're wanting. I'd say if you have something that you offer free, it's more along the lines of getting permission, but it seems like the real genius would be if you could get your readers to actually want to be advertised to because you have such an amazing product or service that they're wanting to dig deeper.
  9. Alex says:
Hello Devesh, I don't know about you, but I got some problems with people including me on their list by copying the email I leave my comments. What do you think about this? Is it moral? Also, I don't know what other people think (but you said that it brings an increase with 250%) but I honestly dislike it, with the delay or instant, I don't like and I will most like not subscribe. Also, freebies don't really strike my fancies (unless I know that the author doesn't offer crappy ebooks). Well, most of my subscriptions were done because the bloggers/list builder was honest and said exactly what he will send in his emails. So I would say honesty is the way to go, but of course this is only my opinion and many have proved me wrong.
    • Robert Dempsey says:
If people are subscribing you rather than the other way around I'd be upset as that's total crap and would be considered spam as you didn't ask for it. One thing to watch out for though is that with some of these plugins the site owner can select to have the checkbox automatically selected, and with Subscriber's Magnet you can do a "quiet subscribe" which I don't use but others may be. It's not on by default though.
  10. Priya says:
Hi Devesh, I think we can use twitter as well to increase email subscribers. Twitter is also a great place for marketing.
  11. Murray says:
Facebook is one of the best options, by far. Unlike RSS which you have to essentially teach someone (and convince) them to use - nearly everyone has Facebook and with the single like, you've got a subscriber. People are much more active on FB as well because of the open nature of discussion vs. a direct message that is RSS.
    • Devesh says:
Exactly. Facebook is an awesome way to get subscribers, traffic and build relationship. Thanks for the nice comment Murray. Your new site looks great.
  12. Darren Scott Monroe says:
Yes these are great tools.... I guess I should actually activate the popup dom LOL
    • Devesh says:
Lol :D ! That's great to hear Darren. Thanks for the comment.
  13. Linda says:
Great tips! I have a nice landing page at facebook, I just struggle with getting people to actually join me. I never heard of pop up domination or subscribers magnet. Will definitely check them out - thanks! Linda
    • Devesh says:
Glad you like it. You should try to create an active and engaging facebook fan page. Both popup domination and subscribers magnet are great plugins and i bet you will love subscribers magnet. Thanks for the nice comment Linda.
  14. Dennis Edell says:
Are you saying to use both plugins at the same time?
    • Devesh says:
Yeah, you will more subscribers by using both plugins at the same time. Thanks for the comment Dennis.
      • Dennis Edell says:
Is that merely an assumption or does any one have any proof on this? It seems a little overkill to me.
  15. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Dev, Creative list here. I like the conversation on pop-ups. I use it now but resisted it in the past. Ultimately, if people like my content they will X out and stick around. If they don't, the jet. These people weren't meant to be a match for me so I don't sweat it too much. Think of this: are you doing something to grow your business or are you doing something to not annoy people? Your motivation - either positive or negative, or according to what you do want or don't want - determines the results. However uncomfortable you feel using pop-ups, as I did for an uber long time - if you grow your business from it, you got to do it. No matter what people are going to be pi**ed off and as your presence grows you can't help but to annoy more and more people who are envious of you or your success. I've still learning how to use Facebook to grow my list. My Fan Page is improving but can use to some. I still do a lot through my personal profile because the numbers are getting larger. I intend to blast through the 5000 limit soon so then I will devote almost of my efforts to my Fan Page. Until then, I will primarily keep it personal. Thanks for sharing your insight Dev. Have a powerful day! RB
    • Devesh says:
Hey Ryan, I always love your comments man. I still think popups work great for many niches. Anyways, Great plan for facebook fan page ryan. Keep up the rocking work. Thanks for the awesome support, as usual. Have a great day.
  16. Tanya says:
Thanks Devesh, I will have to try your tips and maybe I will get more people to my blog. Thanks
    • Devesh says:
That's great to hear. Thanks for the comment. Btw. If you need any help then don't hesitate to contact me.
  17. Steve says:
One way or another building an email list is "the" thing that should concern people. I also am a little leary of popup domination, though. I use it, but set the frequency low, so that it does not constantly bombard people. I think that it is important to keep the offer, "in front" of people but not to assault them with it to the point that they get angry and "bothered" Undoubtedly it is an effective technique so it cannot be ignored completely
    • Devesh says:
Hey Steve, That is what I've done. I make it to show once in a year and i think it works best. Thanks for the awesome support man, as usual. Keep up the good work.
  18. Vijayraj Reddy says:
i think Popup Domination will work better than any other to get more subscribers..
    • Devesh says:
Exactly. I've used it for my blogs and it works awesome. Thanks for the comment Vijaraj
  19. Wasim Ismail says:
Like the idea of using Facebook to build your list, as part of having a successful blog also depends on how big your email list is. Your whole blog structure, content should be targeted to get users to subscribe to your site, and join your mailing list. Pop Up Domination is really good, I have used this on one of my blog.
    • Devesh says:
Exactly. That is something i'm trying to do on my blog. Providing quality content is best way to get more subscribers. Thanks for the nice comment wasim. Keep up the good work.
  20. Sathish says:
Awesome tips, Devesh. Never really tried those plugins still now, but I will give them a try for sure. Thanks for sharing your insights with us. Sathish
    • Devesh says:
Then you should try them man. Both Popup domination and subscribers Magnet works great. Thanks for the great support, as usual. Have a great day Sathish.
  21. Robert Dempsey says:
Interesting tips here Devesh. It sounds like Adswaps are a standard opt-in form, is that correct? If not are there any posts you can link to that explain them in more detail? Thanks.
    • Devesh says:
Glad you like it Robert. Adswaps - Try to find people who have lists about the same size your list is and network with in forums (Warrior Forums) or marketing social sites. An ad swap works like this, they will send a message to their list letting their subscribers know what giveaways you have on your squeeze page. After that you do the same for their squeeze page on your list. You provide each other the mails to send, with your link in there. Thanks for the great support man.
      • Robert Dempsey says:
Ah well that makes total sense, hence "swap." I was getting lost on the ad part. Thanks Devesh.
  22. Jay Philips says:
I disagree on the popup domination. I do not like it when people show popups at all and most of the time I leave the site. I do not come to a website to get bombarded with ads, you already have ads all over your site, on the top and on the sidebars you don't need to block visitors by a popup. Your site has a popup and the ONLY reason why I stayed is because you have had good articles before.
    • Robert Dempsey says:
I think it depends on the niche Jay. I'm so used to pop-ups on sites having to do with anything online/Internet marketing that I just screenshot them for my swipe file and close them. However I don't use them on my site as I've found them to be ineffective for me. But, as Devesh points out, they have many a blogger, though I'd love to see some before/after numbers from someone's analytics account to confirm that one.
    • Devesh says:
Hey Jay, I agree with what Robert said. It depends on your niche but i can easily get 15-20 subscribers daily on my Blogging Tips blog (Technshare), if i use popup domination. Currently i'm not using it for some reason but it is very powerful way to get more subscribers. Anyways, Thanks for sharing your insights.
      • Jay Philips says:
You don't need popups to get more subscribers, you need quality posts. If your posts are worth reading and coming back too people will subscribe to a form on the side bar or button that they click on their own. Just my two cents, too each their own. If I am spammed by popups I do not subscribe nor do I recommend the site/post to others.
  23. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Devesh, Do not be afraid to advertise something that's free. There are two very good reasons for that. If you advertise for example, one or two months on Famousbloggers.net or ComLov.com, do you reaches first, a large group of readers and you'll get a very good Dofollow link with a high Page Rank, which gives your blog or site a great increase in the SERP. It take long time to biult up a good and stong client register.
    • Devesh says:
Exactly. FB or comluv are great blogs to advertise your products/brand. Thanks for the comment Lennart.
  24. Himadri Dimri says:
I guess having Facebook page really helps. One should be regular there and should be active! I dont think pop ups is a great idea they seem to irritate a person alot. Adds are ok, but not pop ups I guess !!!
    • Devesh says:
Yeah, Facebook page works awesome. I agree with popups that's why i have set them to show once in a year. Thanks for the nice comment Himadri.
  25. tushar says:
awesome article...short and to the point.... great to see you here Devesh
    • Devesh says:
That's great to hear Tushar. Thanks for the great support. Have a great day.
  26. Tim says:
Great article! Popup domination is something I want to consider because I notice that people don't tend to stay too long on a blog and when they do, it'll be great to capture their details in the most loving way. I've seen popup domination in action and I love it. Thanks for those other tips.
    • Devesh says:
Glad you like it Tim. Thanks for the nice comment.
