How to Thank Each Other for Tweeting and Retweeting

February 20, 2010 - Last Modified: May 20, 2010 by Hesham Zebida

thanks twitter

I decided to be more active recently on Twitter, and when you are more active on Twitter it will not take you long to realize the difference that Twitter make for your blog traffic and blogging ideas as well, I can find lots of ideas from twitter to blog about, but there is an opinion and personal feeling I would like to share with you about retweeting links, so you correct me if I am wrong!

Why I want to break Twitter Traditions

I Retweet a lot of links of members I follow on Twitter when found them useful, I even retweet a few non related to my niche links when I really… really like them, and this to help them by sending more traffic to their blogs, so basically the Twitter traditions is to thank people who tweeted your tweets! So I am gaining lots of tweets says “Thanks you for the tweeting”, or “Thank you for Retweeting”!

Someone could say people will see that I am a retweet guy and they will follow me for that, but how many of people will notice that?! I don’t think there is a lot of them, I want to break this “Thank you” Twitter traditions because it’s not enough a warding, yes you are a nice person when you retweet my links but is it really enough to thank you?

Thank you for Tweeting, is it enough?!

thanks

At the beginning I was feeling great when I receive a thank you tweet, but after some time, I started not to like it that much, specially when the person who thank me disappear after that and didn’t tweet or retweet my own links, it actually piss me off when someone hit the button on Twitter Widget and tweet something like “I’m on your site! via TwitterRemote”! I mean where is the creativity on that?!

I have removed the twitter widget completely from my blog, I just don’t want anyone to tell me he was on my site because I already know who goes and who comes 😉

What if we STOP Thank each other for Tweeting and Retweeting?

twitter_blue_birds

This is an invitation to change your twitter habits, yes.. there must be better ways always, I am going to tell you about how to thank people who tweet or retweet your links in a better way, and awarding them at the same time.

Simple click on the twitter name of the person who tweet your links to open his twitter page and pick one of the tweets and visit the links, see what it talk about, if you like it then retweet it, this will make him/her more happy and welling to retweet your links more in future!

Don’t forget to Follow us on Twitter @FamousBloggers because we Retweet 🙂

Well you break Twitter Traditions?

Your missing the point of saying TY for a RT The person RT's your post when they don't have too.. least you can do is say TY. If you choose to visit their links and RT them to thats great.. but it starts with saying TY Like I said in my post... people that RT my posts get a TY and I also return the favor at some point. But the TY is is just fine. Since saying TY to them gets their twitter name in front of all your followers and if you have alot, they are very excited with that promotion you just gave them. Don't change things just to change them.. these are things you should be doing, RTing a person post after they RT yours is nothing new. It is new to people that offer no return to peoples RT's .-= John Paul Aguiar´s last blog ..Google Says – A Strong Twitter Community Will Get Your Tweets Ranked On First Page =-.
    • Hesham says:
Good points John (Start with TY) I like that! I am trying to discover the hidden natural relationship that sometimes established between two tweeters when they start to promote each other's posts with out even talk about it, with out even mentioning why! I have experienced some good relationships through twitter tweeting and retweeting and I even don't know those guys, this makes me feel guilty some times .. I think I should go more closer and discover who are behind the Twitter account! It's good always to learn from you, and by the way.. the Avatar image looks great ;)
      • John Paul Aguiar says:
Yea I had to add my new email to Gravatar now its all set..lol Yes RTing peoples posts is great. but sometimes a simple TY is all they want. Here is the post I wrote on Twitips, bout my eway to say thanks to my followers, and the things I do http://www.twitip.com/my-6-step-plan-to-give-thanks-to-my-followers/ Heshem you are on your way saying TY and giving back a RT is great way to build a strong community. .-= John Paul Aguiar´s last blog ..Google Says – A Strong Twitter Community Will Get Your Tweets Ranked On First Page =-.
        • Hesham says:
Wonderful advice on your post, I almost follow these... and I actually follow anyone retweet my tweets or my posts or my followers is posts to!
    • Fred says:
I agree with you John. I don't think that a thank you is in lieu of future retweets. I want the person to know that I appreciated their retweet. But, I will return the favor in the future.
      • John Paul says:
Fred,, thanks for the comment.. I think that is the best way of thinking.. Tweet to tweet not to get a return tweet.
  2. Jimi Jones says:
Interesting post, Hesham For me, all of this is situational. I use a combination of methods depending on the situation. I am as grateful as anyone, but I do not feel that everyone has an expectation of being thanked each and every time a RT is given, that would allow little time for anything else. I RT frequently as a means of promoting the work of others with no expectation of reciprocal actions. By RT-ing the work of other hard working bloggers, you are showing an appreciation for what they have produced, but also promoting yourself as a giving person. Human nature always kicks in and many will visit your blog or return the good will at some point in time. There is no need to load my stream with thank you notices all day because that was not the reason I promoted the post, it's about sharing so we can all benefit in some way. .-= Jimi Jones´s last blog ..Strategic Use of Your Twitter Widget =-.
  3. Udegbunam Chukwudi says:
I understand where you're coming from. Retweeting only takes a few seconds so adding a retweet to the thank you will most definitely go a long way. I don't retweet often but when I do it's a whole lot of retweeting and I'm yet to get to that point where the "thanks for the retweets" message pisses me off. From another angle, you might sound as though the only reason you retweeted their posts was so they could reciprocate and retweet your posts as well. I retweet cos I like what I'm retweeting and it doesn't really bother me if you retweet my links in return or not ;)
    • Hesham says:
Yeah! some times it piss me off too, and this is why I wrote this post lol! Thanks for stepping by!
  4. Dennis Edell says:
I'm not on twitter yet (hopefully this week) so i don't know how I would react to re-tweets. I do think you might have worded this post better, as some are taking it completely wrong. You're not saying "don't be thankful", you're just trying to find different ways then just to say "thanks". Actually a lot of forum owners and forum regulars do not like plain "thank you for the information" posts, as it wastes everyone elses time to read them...they say to say thanks in private .-= Dennis Edell´s last blog ..I am Unsubscribing From Your Blog – Again =-.
    • Hesham says:
Yes, this is exactly what I mean, find a way more than just thank you! You are right, if you thank someone in a forum, community will even look at you like a spammer lol looking forward to meet you on Twitter soon!
      • Dennis Edell says:
LOL not as a spammer no, but when one clicks 10 links to see what's "new" and they find "thanks man!"; ye they get irked. .-= Dennis Edell´s last blog ..I am Unsubscribing From Your Blog – Again =-.

I usually thank them for the RT and if i find their post interesting then do RT . .-= Shabnam Sultan´s last blog ..See Asteroid Vesta with your naked eyes =-.

Good reaction! thanks for stepping by Shabnam.
  6. Rinaldi says:
I think thanks for the retweet that is a twitter tradition is a good thing. I think about your personality that always hope something after you retweet. i think it is selfless attitude. .-= Rinaldi @ blogicthink´s last blog ..7 in 1 Business Success Wordpress Theme =-.
    • Hesham says:
As "Will" said in the comments below, we will maybe turn Twitter to an official Thank tradition :) By the way, I love the ThemeForest "Business Success" theme on your latest post, it has amazing effect on the home page slide! mmm.. from just reading one post, do you really know how my personality is? I see you use your logic, this is a feeling from your blog's name! nice name for a blog, but using logic -maybe- will not in all cases! .. eh?
  7. Alan Bleiweiss says:
My personal view is that taking a few moments to thank those who retweet is a sign that I appreciate what they did, and to let them know that I appreciate it. Since I get a lot of retweets, I will most often just send out one retweet that includes several people otherwise some days I could spend hours just thanking them in retweets. So to me, it's common courtesy (unlike following back every single person who follows me, which is not realistic since I can't possibly keep up with reading the tweets from thousands of people). If someone retweets my tweets about my own articles more than a couple times, I will often take time to see if I can return the favor, however again, to do so for every person that retweets my articles would be insane to keep up with and is just unrealistic itself. I also don't understand why some people don't like being thanked. Seems crazy to me. Just sayin. .-= Alan Bleiweiss´s last blog ..Google Labs shares the crack pipe – Living Stories Style =-.
    • Hesham says:
No one can say that being nice and thank people is not a good thing to do, and yeah I used to thank people in groups, it's even introducing them to each others in a way or another! I agree that this is a crazy idea not to thank people on something they did for you, but in our case -on this post- I am trying to find a better way to award them while thanking them! Thanks a lot for sharing your opinion, I have visited your blog and found tons of useful inspiring information, I even tweeted one of them :)
      • Alan Bleiweiss says:
I think it comes down to individual preferences and circumstances. I just don't have the ability to check out what every person who RTd my stuff has, themselves, written, just for the sake of returning the favor. But I'm not exactly a social media expert either so who knows what's best - and you've started this dialogue on it, so that's a good thing! .-= Alan Bleiweiss´s last blog ..Google Labs shares the crack pipe – Living Stories Style =-.
    • Andrys says:
Why not thank them in private though? That's what Direct Mail (DM) can be good for. Why does the entire Twitter community need to read your personal thanks to each person for retweeting you? That way it stays certered on you. I've been told by someone that I 'Retweet' too much. Some things I won't stop although I will give a 2nd thought so as not to irritate people who are trying to read through a lot of tweets -- and a person can just follow only people who don't displease them by spreading too much maybe-interesting info. "-) I do agree that the "Thanks for retweeting" is just weird, as it really is a personal thing and there's Direct Mail for all of us. One can thank them by re-tweeting a good tweet of theirs though. That way we all get to read possibly interesting info bits.
  8. Anne says:
I think it's nice to thank for RT's. I am not in the habit of RT'ing a lot of tweets - and I don't follow people who focus mainly on RT'ing. So, when one of my followers actually does RT my tweet, especially if it's one with a link to one of my sites, you can be sure I'd be thankful - and thank them :) .-= Anne @ b6s.net´s last blog ..Spring Pictures from Israel =-.
    • Hesham says:
You are a decent woman Ann! But hey! don't unfollow me thinking I am focusing on RT'ing thing ;)
  9. Jose says:
Hi, I can't remember of anyone asking me to retweet something, but I can't say for sure. I don't send direct messages asking anyone to retweet, but sometimes when I tweet, I do say something like "retweet if you like it" or "retweet if you know anyone interested". Usually I may retweet something that I find interesting and especially relevant and useful. I'm not expecting others to retweet my tweets, just because I retweet theirs. It's the same as the links on my blog: most of the links there are not reciprocal, nor am I wanting them to be (of course it would be nice), I've chosen those links because they have quality and that's what I want to give to my readers: quality. Kind regards, José .-= Jose´s last blog ..Extra Giveaway - Win a Free Oil Painting =-.
    • Hesham says:
In this world everything is possible for you, I don't see anything wrong with DM your friends and ask them to re-tweet your posts -if they like it- as some times we miss so many good stuff regarding the busy social media life. Thanks José, I really appreciate your comment and opinion! By the way, I see some good art information and collections on your blog, keep up the good work.
  10. Liane says:
Well, I guess I'm a culprit. :D I do it really more of following the norm. Back when I frequently retweet, people always thanked me for it. So it happened as a sort of reciprocation to the act. I hate thanking to RT too, but it made me feel guilty, or at least it nags me that those people might think of me as rude. In the end, I just do it. There's nothing to lose anyway. But you're right. The tradition should be broken really. .-= Liane´s last blog ..A Creative Lesson From Steve Jobs =-.
    • Hesham says:
Well I understand your feeling Liane! By the way, you have no idea how much I am glad to see you back to blogging.

  11. Will says:
Hi Hesham, When someone who has a good blog/website retweets my messages it helps remind me to check out their site again - and maybe RT one of their posts ( which is a better way of saying thank-you I think). When someone thanks me for retweeting them - I think it's nice of them in a way ... ... but really, like you, I wish they would just stop doing it. ( should I thank them for thanking me - or what?!? ) Then they could thank me for thanking them for having thanked me. .... And they could thank me for thanking them without thinking to thank them for thinking to thank me ..... etc etc etc (it could go on forever !) Cheers Will .-= Will´s last blog ..wchingya.com =-.
    • Hesham says:
LOL! Will.. glad to see your comment, I really miss hanging on the internet with you like those days! I am reading comments and this one is killing me laughing! but as I said this is a Thank YOU post!
  12. jan geronimo says:
Saying thank you to someone who bothers to help spread your ideas via retweets is good form. It's me saying I appreciate my post resonates with you and that you consider it important enough to share with your own following. Should it end with merely saying thanks? It's up to the individual to find other ways of reciprocating a good deed. We'd save a lot of unnecessary grief if we view this with more detachment. Retweeting valuable posts can be an end in itself. You may not get immediate satisfaction from those whose ideas you've helped spread in Twitter, but you'd prove invaluable to your followers who look up to you because you're doing a magnificent job filtering great content for them. .-= jan geronimo´s last blog ..When a Question Is the Answer =-.
    • Hesham says:
Jan, you are always a source of wisdom! thanks a lot for your great opinion, it's just that this life is getting more faster than I thought it will be, and some times there is no time even to thank someone, specially if you are managing 3 Twitter accounts like me and you love to award good posts and good people!
      • jan geronimo says:
Keeping engaged is indeed challenging. We have to keep track of many sites where our friends and readers are having conversations. Perhaps another way of saying our thanks is by paying more attention to them when we find the time. Time to respond with @reply. Time to visit their blogs when we can. Time to link to their best posts as appreciation for their consistent support. That beats a mechanical thank you anytime, especially if it's not backed up with concrete action
        • Hesham says:
I love the last part of your comment, you know?! some people do this and thank me or say hi and make me feel guilty and shy! I think we have to set a day in the week for "family" blog visits, where we can hang out and visit our friend's blogs and say something that has value and bring a smile! Thanks Jan for the great inspirations and reminder!
  13. chandan says:
Hi Hesham you have mentioned one nice point here. I retweet most of bloggers post. I also get only the thanks msg from them. I never use "thanks for RT" word if some one RT mine even tough it is okay for me if someone only say "thanks for RT" after i retweet them. • Hesham says:
Well, I did thank people who retweet, but now I am developing my straight way for thanking them! Well done Dana, I follow the same rules because who ever retweet my links I try to check them out!
  15. lawmacs says:
That is what we need most of all from twitter not just thank you although i still appreciate the fact that some one takes the time to say thank you i would prefer to see my retweet counts goes up .-= lawmacs´s last blog ..WordPress Review Site Plugin =-.
    • Hesham says:
I think we all appreciate the Thank words, but humans nature seeks more than that some times ;)
  16. Tycoon Blogger says:
I do still try to thank someone for RT me but usually only if it is the first time. If a person regularly RTs my stuff, I will make sure I am following them (of course) and then make sure I RT some of their stuff that provides value. How about I just say a Thank You now in the comments for all the future RTs that you tweet out for me :-)
    • Hesham says:
LOL! here in the comments will be great idea ;) I would like to take the chance and thank you for everything you do, specially blogging , well.. it's a thank you post anyways ;)
  17. Tom says:
I usually do both. I still thank the Twitter user for the RT, but then I usually try to find something to thank them with my actions. Sometimes it is a Tweet of one of their links, other times it is an extra comment on their blog. I still like the courtesy of thanking them, but provide value as well. .-= Tom@Free Squeeze Pages´s last blog ..The Aweber Code….And Why You Need To Promote It! =-.
    • Hesham says:
I am not against doing both ;)
