I Lost Twitter Id field after upgrading to Thesis 1.7, what to do?

April 1, 2010 - Last Modified: April 22, 2011 by Hesham Zebida

Thesis 1.7 Twitter ID

After upgrading to Thesis to 1.7 probably you will discover that you will have to do some extra work, it depends, I think all this because plugins you are installing on your blog. I have received a question in a comment from Kristen asking how to add Twitter Id field back to comment form, it disappear after upgrading to Thesis 1.7, so I am going to answer this question here.

For those who want to display Twitter Id field in comment form they can follow this tutorial as well, but they will need to install TwitterLink Comments plugin and set it’s setting Not to show the field automatically, I assume that you don’t want to display the ugly blue field after your comment form, so we will add the field manually right after the site field, check the comment form on our blog, it will look exactly the same… And oh! Yeah… you can also give a try and add comment 😉

New features added to Thesis comment options

There is so many changes and features added to Thesis 1.7, and talking about comments, now you can control the view and order of comment, trackbacks and comment form simply by drag and drop to change the order.

thesis_comment_options

So, there must be some changes to the comment.php file, and yeah Thesis Theme developers have done a few changes, and by looking into the code and files, you will find that the comment.php original file has changed, now it’s calling another file in the >lib>classes> folder also called comment.php, and this explains why Twitter Field Id disappeared after the upgrade, and also it explain why WordPress Thread Comment plugin is not working with Thesis 1.7, the plugin simply can not find a way to display the replies on the new theme version!

How to display the Twitter Id field

Before you start, why not make a copy of comment.php file? I do it like this, I always copy/backup files before doing changes, I just rename the copy with adding an underscore to it’s name in the beginning, in our case we will rename comment.php to _comment.php, I always keep those file in the same folder. This will remind you with the changes you have done and to which files.

Now, to display the Twitter Id field in the comment form right after the site field, we will have to add this code right after line (85)

thesis_comment_code

Here is the code:

Twitter (ID only. No links or "@" symbols)

Note: You will notice that the Twitter Id field has a tabindex=”4″, if you decided to display the field by another order, then reorder the tabindex to match your need, this is very useful when your visitors use the tab button on their keyboard to jump from a field to another while typing their information in the comment fields.

Save comment.php file after adding the code and upload it to back to \lib\classes\ and plz don’t forget to make a copy of it, this will remind you with the changes you have done, so you can follow the same steps when ever you upgrade or you setup new blogs.

Don’t forget to clear your browser cashe, or any cashe plugin you are using. That’s it, Enjoy!

Hi, thanks for this great tutorial! I am having the same styling issue - it's there, but right up against the comment box and the font isn't matching. I would deeply, deeply appreciate some help please! :)

I know I'm a little late to the game, but is there a fix for the Wordpress Thread Comments and I'm missing it. Many thanks, Mike
    • Hesham says:
Hey Mike, There is no fix yet for anything! I am not sure if you were using the thread comment plugin before you upgrade to Thesis 1.7? Anyways, I have removed the plugin and I am using the original WP thread comments now! Give it a try by removing the plugin completely and enable thread comments from: Settings>Discussion>Enable threaded (nested) comments "set the level you like"! I have done this and it just works again without the plugin! Yes!... it's time for some coffee, so .. let me know if things went good with your blog ;)

Good to support another victim of Thsis 1.7 ;)
  6. Peter says:
I just upgraded to Thesis 1.7 today, and now my comment luv plugin has stopped working. The CSS class around the comment luv link doesn't seem to be inserting when you enter your comment. Could this have something to do with the comment field changes as well? It looks like you have yours working, and I'm wondering if you had to do anything? .-= Peter´s last blog ..How To File Your Federal Taxes For Free =-.
    • Hesham says:
Peter, I have done a fast test and installed CommentLuv to a Thesis 1.7 blog to see if it's working or not, and actually dose work! So, probably you need to deactivate then activate CommentLuv plugin and check your plugin options, if it doesn't work plz contact Andy thought the CommentLuv or ComLuv to ask him, maybe he can check the code!
      • Peter says:
Yeah, I've tried deactivating and reactivating the plugin, and making sure the options were correct, but that didn't help. the plugin still grabs the posts, and inserts them linked, however, the CSS class doesn't work, so it isn't styled as it should be. Instead it inserts a comment like this: .-= Investor Junkie´s last post ..When Should A Late Customer Get Cut Off? =-. I'll contact comluv to see what they say. .-= Peter´s last blog ..A Great Way To Get Free Gadgets, Cash And Other Free Stuff =-.
        • Hesham says:
Ok! I got it.. yeah! I have the same problem!!! It seem that the comment lots it's sty;e completely, even the "heart_tip_box" class which displays the red heart is missing, and also the commentLuv is not "ON", means you have to check the box next to it each time you comment! You know? such problems is devided between 3 persons, Theme Developer, plugin Developer and the Blogger! Who should fix this? theme developer or plugin developer? Or should the blogger sacrifice a theme or a plugin?! Anyways, I think this will be solved soon, I hope we will find a fix somewhere, so if you find it before me plz tell me, I will do the same
          • Peter says:

Glad you did the upgrade safely Alison, and my regards to your happy clients ;) It will be fine if there is no complicated plugins installed, and this is makes me think not to use more plugins in future! I am stucked still... can not upgrade FamousBloggers.net because of the "WordPress Thread" Comment plugin! Have a wonderful day, and thanks a lot for your feedback!

Hesham, You are awesome! Glad I could inspire an awesome post! I'm so glad you were able and willing to help! I have one more question (I've only recently made the switch to WP--by myself no less)... My Twitter Field is now basically right on top of my comment field. Everything is all "smooshed" together. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Sorry if I'm being a pain--like I said--I've only recently moved over to WP and all by myself! Having to learn CSS and PHP and everything is mind-boggling!
    • Hesham says:
I think you are working on your blog right now, because it has an error message... waiting you till you finish and bring it up again so I can take a look!
      • Marcy says:
Hi. I am having the same problem Kristen was having above. I checked out her website and it looks like it's fixed. Can you help me out? Also, besides placement, the font of my Twitter category under Comments is smaller than the others. Thanks so much!
        • Hesham says:
I have just sent you an email, let me if it works for you or not!
          • Marcy says:
Hi Hesham. Thanks so much. That worked perfectly. You are amazing! And so quick to help me out. I really appreciate it. Really lots and lots!

Thanks for this useful tutorial. But I removed Twitter field since Google started following nofollow links.. Though I'm planning to add it again... I don't know, but I just think that I have to let the juice flows the way the wind wants... mmm although I am not sure if this is the right thing to do! Oh! the "Cash" has a strong effect on my writing style lol Thanks buddy, I have fixed that

Dude, the new Thesis is kick ass! I'm loving all the new options in it. You'd have to be a fool to not be using Thesis at this point. .-= Brendan @ Online Marketing Consultant´s last blog ..Why Web Design Shouldn’t Be a Do-It-Yourself Task =-.
    • Hesham says:
Hey Brendan, I am running it on one of my blogs, and it rocks! I always think of Thesis as a theme that teach you ;) Have you got any problems with any plugin?
      • Brendan says:
The only problem I've noticed is my favicon is missing. But that's not hard to fix. I'll have to dig in and make sure everything else is up to speed. Oh, and WP-Spire kind of messed up on me and now I have to redo my sales page. Thank god I saved all the code for that. .-= Brendan @ Online Marketing Consultant´s last blog ..The Future of Your Business Depends on Customer Opinions =-.
        • Hesham says:
Thanks Brendan, this added value to the post ;) The best thing is you have a copy of all your code, so.. this is kind of confirming that Thesis 1.7 is not to upgrade and go..... unless you are starting a new blog! Ah, by the way, why don't you visit Gravatar.com , a few second of your time will make your comment avatar looks cool, I am not a big fan of the default avatar image in comments ;)
  15. Dev says:
Great tutorial bro Very helpful for a thesis users ;)
    • Hesham says:
      Thanks!
