Save Money & Time By Learning To Avoid Newbie Traps

December 24, 2010 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Dror Bekerman

Newbie Traps

As you all should probably know the internet marketing world is filled with bad, crappy and useless products. It is sad but it is the truth and the sooner you understand it, the better you will be.

What I am going to share with you in this article is from my own personal experience. I am one of the most trigger happy people I know when it comes to giving away my credit card information and buying products so I know what I am saying as I wasted a lot of money and a lot of valuable time buying bad products.

It took me sometime to get rid of this nasty habit and once I did, I actually started succeeding and making money instead of going from one product to the next waiting and hoping for something that will never come.

Clear Newbie Trap Giveaways

Here are the clear newbie trap giveaways as I learned and I always look at every product and each sales page I see and check for all of these.

Looks Too Good To Be True

Guess what, it probably is. If you are getting the feeling that the product is simply too good to be true, than it is a clear red signal for you as it probably is too good to be true.

Too General

If the product is too general and only about “how to make money online” than be warned. The more specific the product is going to be the better chances for it to be a good and helpful product.

No Info About The Actual Product

Many newbie trap products sales pages are all about emphasizing what the product is NOT and don’t give any information about what the product actually IS. This is a clear warning for you as there is a probably good reason for the creator to focus on what the product is not than to tell you what it actually is.

False Scarcity

Many newbie trap products tend to use false scarcity as they claim to only sell 250, 300 copies. The thing is how do you know when the numbers are false? It is pretty easy actually. Just do the math, if someone is selling a product for $37-$77 and claims only to sell 250-300 copies than it means he is only looking to bank $9,000-$23,000 and that is without paying any commissions to affiliates. When you see these numbers you can be sure it is false scarcity.

You can also signup as an affiliate as almost all of these products will have a link on the footer for affiliates. Doing so will allow you to see the prizes that are being offered to the top affiliates and when you will see that first place get $5,000 than you will soon realize that there is no way they are only going to sell 250 or 300 copies.

False Results

I seriously doubt that any product will allow you to bank $30,000-$120,000 within 30 days as most of the newbie trap products claim with very big red titles. Whenever you see these type of big numbers be warned. There is no get rich quick product out there so stop looking for one. Actually, most product that are being presented as “Get Rich Quick” are only working for the product creator and for the buyers they are more close to “Lose Money & Time Fast”.

If You Are Still Not Sure

If you checked all of the above and you are still not sure and your finger is still itching and you want to get the product than please do the following before you buy as it can really save you money and time.

Google The Product Creator

Simply Google the product creator name and check the results. If you don’t find anything other than review sites than it is actually not good. You want to find an official site of the creator, a facebook profile, a twitter profile or any other site that is official. The reason is simple. If someone is using his real name and has official sites than it is slightly less likely that he will be selling crappy products.

Search The Product In The WarriorForum

This little step has saved me many times and I am sure it will do the same for you. Just go to the WarriorForum and run a search for the product name and read the reviews of other warriors. You will get all the information you need. In order to be able to search the forum you will need to register which is something I strongly recommend you do as the WarriorForum is the number one forum when it comes to internet marketing.

Do not skip this step as I guarantee it will save you time and money and it only takes a few seconds.

Learn From Your Mistakes

We are all human beings and we all make mistakes. There is no escape as non of us is perfect. The important thing is to learn from the mistakes we make so that we will not make the same mistake over and over again.

Here are just two steps you should consider taking after making a mistake and buying a bad product.

Unsubscribe

What I normally do after having a bad experiment with a product is to opt-out of the mailing list of the product creator and from any internet marketer that promoted that product to me.

By doing this I am making sure to stay only of those email lists that actually care about me and provide valuable information. If you stay on an email list of internet marketer than promotes these type of products you are just setting your self up for more mistakes.

Share

Share you thoughts about the product. Simply go to the WarriorForum and let people know what you think about the product. Help others avoid making the same mistake.

I strongly believe in the saying: “one for all and all for one”. This is the only way we can all succeed, by caring and helping each other.

Conclusion

The sad truth is that the internet marketing niche and the make money online niche are filled with newbie trap products that deliver nothing and cause many newbies to waste money and time.

The good thing is that you can and should be able to identify these type of products and save yourself from making mistakes. The steps I mentioned are the ones I know of and that worked for me when I got started.

If you think I missed something and you have other steps that can be taken than please share them with us by commenting below. After all, we are all here to help each other.

To your success (and mine :)),

Hi DB, This is my first time here and I find your blog helpful and very informative. I really appreciate your honesty. Iv'e been scam so many times and I learned from my mistakes. Two out of many products that I still remember I bought years ago and try it are mass article control and commission crusher and they are no good at all. I saw people still promoting these products. Anyway Its so good to find you and your blog. Have a good one! Thanks...

Thanks for these tips. i didn't know what Viral marketing was so I gave my email address to someone offering a giveaway. I soon discovered what Viral marketing was! I was getting 100-200 emails a day into my inbox until I unsubscribed from every new marketer that dropped by. One thing you only hinted at was this: if they can make squillions of dollars using this 'unique' method as they claim, why are they hassling me for $7 and not retired to some luxury villa somewhere while their money comes rolling in? They did give me an opportunity to see how their 'marketing' plan worked though, which was a valuable lesson - but not one that I will be using. Carol
  3. Vivek Parmar says:
everyone thinks of making money online and forget that making money online is not too easy it needs patience and hard work to reach that height
    • DB Baker says:
That is true. The biggest problem is that there are so many marketers out there that are simply taking advantage of all those newbies that actually believe in "magic" and in making thousands a day without putting the work first.
  4. TJ McDowell says:
So aren't these kinds of activities illegal? False advertising promises and such? I'm sure they businesses aren't part of the better business bureau, so it's not like you're going to affect their rating there, but it seems like something you could take someone to court over so they wouldn't keep doing to other consumers. If there's one thing that makes me mad, it's outright lies about a product.
    • DB Baker says:
I have seen personally products that guarantee results and from what I know this is illegal according to the new FTC or/and FCC laws. As I said in another comment, the problem is mainly with Clickbank as they should stop those vendors from selling their products through their network.
      • TJ McDowell says:
Wouldn't that mean Clickbank would have to police the vendors they allow though? I would imagine that would take a lot of time for them to do. To me that would be like a grocery store verifying that every product they stock doesn't participate in any false advertising. Why were you thinking that it should fall on their shoulders instead of having consumers report false promises? Or maybe you're suggesting that they investigate only per customer complaint?
        • DB Baker says:
Clickbank doesn't care. They have a refund policy in which they simply give you the refund and that is it. They don't care why you asked for it. They should police their vendors as if those vendors are committing illegal actions I would suspect Clickbank will to somewhat to blaim for letting that happen (unless they have this written somewhere in the terms that it is not their responsibility). The bottom line is that I don't think anything will change unless Clickbank will start the change. They have the power but I guess they lack the will.
  5. The Bad Blogger says:
Well... this people are pro liars... can you imagine even the real pros does help to sell crappy product... and worst of all they even help to promote it saying how good it is when they didn't even use it... I really wonder what kind of fucking life they live by using money that was given by those poor newbies (I was one of them)...
    • DB Baker says:
Don't worry about what life they are living with that money... Focus on what you can do to help new newbies to avoid giving them more money.
  6. Rob says:
I think that more than anything we need to be each others eyes and ears (as you have said). We should help each other avoid poor product by signaling the alarm on them!
    • DB Baker says:
Exactly... So just share this post anywhere you can so as many newbies will get a chance to read it and avoid making those very common mistakes.
  7. Alex says:
Hi DB, You are right, when I was a newbie I was so impressed on those sales pages that showed incredible number in a short time with little to no effort and I wasn't really doubting it. But know I tend to be more skeptical and when I see big number thrown at me I tend to look with a suspicious eye. There are a lot of unscrupulous people out there that their sole business is to con newbies that want to make money online.
    • DB Baker says:
Thanks for your feedback. There is no question that those sales pages work. Those vendors put all the effort in the sales page. I just wish some of them will focus more on the product itself as they do on the sales page. That will surly make some products much better.
      • Alex says:
You are so right. I honestly hate having to read through tons and tons of sales page content or testimonials just to get to the product specification and price. I mean,, why can't they start with some small introduction 3-4 rows the most then present the products features and price. After, they can make the page full of testimonials and sales speech.
        • DB Baker says:
I think the best sales pages are created for Jon Leger's products. Simple comprehensive demo video, few bullet points of the major features... great price and than tons and tons of testimonials. The bottom line is that if you have a quality product, you are not going to need all the hyped up approach.
  8. Barbara Ling, Virtual Coach says:
You mean people actually lie on sales page? Say it ain't so! :) When it comes right down to it, an educated consumer...really is the best customer indeed.
  9. Aakash says:
Its nice to see that you added very very good and informative post. This one should read all new bie as this can save their time, their money, their effort and more important they can drive their dream in the right path. Simply superb.
    • DB Baker says:
Thanks! Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
  10. Pritam says:
Really great post. Every newbie has to go with the cheap and useless products. Even when I was new I have purchased so many useless and fake online products. This article will really help such people to save money as well as time from such products. I like the idea of google Product creator or find that on social media. Even the idea of WarriorForum is great to know about them.
  11. Richard says:
It's so common to see landing page promising get rich quick programs that give no real product description and advertise false scarcity. These are definite sales traps. I never buy from those types of sites. One good thing to do is to try and stick to the programs that have free trials. The better programs aren't afraid to let you try them out without a commitment first. They feel their product is strong enough to sell itself.
  12. Mani Viswanathan says:
A false product will always have a Sales page which is common to most other false sales pages. The same colors, the same width & similar images on a sales pages indicates that it is quite unsafe to buy that product.
    • DB Baker says:
Hi Mani, You are correct... It was very common about 2 months ago when product after product had the exact same sales page and all where pretty much crap...
  13. Icechen1 says:
It's those newbie traps that are giving the internet marketing a really bad name...
    • Hesham says:
      I agree!
    • DB Baker says:
True... This is why I don't understand how no one is doing something to stop them as many of these products are clearly violating some FCC laws. As I said, I think they only way to put an end to these type of products is forcing Clickbank to take action against those vendors...
  14. Isha Singh says:
i too caught in this trap when i was new in internet world... now became smart... well nice tip to teach newbie...
    • DB Baker says:
Thanks Isha, It is a problem every newbie has and I hope I can help some to avoid wasting time and money...
  15. Kevin says:
Almost all these Clickbank products looks too good to be true. I'm not going to lie I did buy one product and it actually helped me out. But the rest are just a no no for me...
    • Hesham says:
Everyone try to show his product like a super awesome solution! Glad to hear that product helped you Kevin!
      • Kevin says:
Well, they have to because that's what it takes to sell a product. Those clickbank marketers are such great salesman aren't they :)
  16. Vivek Parmar says:
didn't ever get a chance to buy products on internet except domain names and hosting space. and both of them accept paypal so need to give credit card details while buying it.
    • DB Baker says:
All clickbank products also accept paypal and you get 60 day money back guarantee. This is not the problem. It is more about the waste of time and the information overload.
  17. sureshpeters says:
great article mate, evev my friends faced this problem
    • Rahul says:
ya very good article it also helps newbie ha ha
    • DB Baker says:
      Thanks...
  18. Devesh says:
Great Post. I like your tips. I think many people make False Scarcity to sell their products and even some people show fake clickbank screenshots :D !! Anyways, Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas and happy holidays :).
    • DB Baker says:
Thanks Devesh, It is true and the main problem is Clickbank as they are the only ones that can actually put a stop to all the false claims and hyped up sales pages but it doesn't look like they are going to do anything about it...
  19. Nasrul Hanis says:
Yeah.. there is a lot of newbie of traps out there and it's a high possibility that we'll fall into it! What a nightmare and waste of money! You'd mentioned true and undeniable facts above, DB. Sometimes we don't even know what is the 'real' products behind the boombastic names they offer! Thanks DB for sharing! And I hope most newbies read your article before they fall into the traps too!
    • DB Baker says:
Hi Nasrul, Thanks for the feedback and it is all up to us to help the newbies... Link and share this article and get it out there for everyone to see and read. Thanks again.
  20. Dennis Edell says:
Excellent article, now I will make it look even worse. lol Lets talk about False Scarcity; a little schooling that NO ONE on the outside will ever figure out on their own. Actually, they may indeed only sell 250-300 copies.....from that sales page. Read that again. Here it is, what no one would ever find out from the outside on their own.....those numbers 250-300 DO NOT INCLUDE AFFILIATE SALES. How's that for sneaky shit. Technically, they are not flat out lying to your face. THEY will only sell 250-300...from that sales page, indeed. The point is, they do not want to get in the way of the affiliates. Similar to wholesalers only selling to businesses and resellers and not the general public...they sell 1000x more that way. The difference is, the wholesaler scenario is not telling half-truths and being sneaky about it.
    • DB Baker says:
Hi Dennis, You actually really have a very good point there and I didn't think about that... It is all about how you can spin your words making them mean one thing for one person and something else to another person. Thanks for the great feedback and edition.
  21. RinatisDinoro says:
This is one of the most detailed articles i have read on FB. Thank you!
    • DB Baker says:
Thanks for the great feedback... Truly is appreciated.
  22. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi DB, I like your tips. Products that trump what they aren't, aren't too proud of what they are. Keen insight here. I also agree about "general" products. A specialized product had some serious thought put into it; these tend to be legit offerings. Of course, do your due diligence. Realize that every person offers an opinion. It's up to you to make the ultimate decision to purchase the product or not. Thanks for sharing your insight. RB
    • DB Baker says:
Hi RB :) You are correct about the ultimate decision being yours. The main problem for newbies is that when you first get into the whole make money online world it is very easy to buy all of those empty promises mainly because those sales pages are really good at it... Just hope my tips will help some newbies avoid making the sames mistakes I did when I got started.
