3 Simple Methods To Get More Comments To Your New Blog

December 28, 2010 - Last Modified: November 13, 2011 by Adam Mello

So you created a great and useful article. You are really proud of yourself because you put your heart into your writing and caught the topic in the way you were imagining. And now, after all the editorial work, you feel comfortable with clicking Publish button and to release your article to the world.

First day and then second day pass and you realize that the wonderful article you created has no comments.. People seem to not care about your blog, about your work, about what you have to say. This is a frustrating feeling might get you, you might become discouraged to write and to develop your blog further. There is simply no interaction created and so what is the point of your blogging?

Sad story and another promising blogger quites the Blogosphere. It is shame that this blogger did not read this article so he/she will find out that getting nice amount of comments to every article is not just a matter of quality content but also something else…

Following these 3 methods you will surely increase the amount of comments, gain new inspirations and get in touch with wonderful same-minded people. I promise:)

1. Comment on small and middle-sized blogs

If you want to receive comments you have to move your ass out and start reading and commenting on other blogs from your niche. I would suggest you to go especially for smaller and middle-sized blogs. Why?

  • Your comment will not get lost among the huge amount of comments which big bloggers are receiving.
  • Your comments will be much more appreciated by other blogs’ authors. If you share a valuable comment (and you will, there is no point to share “thank you” comments) you will most likely receive a valuable comment back.

Commenting on 10 – 20 blogs per day will surely create enough buzz and you will notice a nice and constant increase in your blog traffic and in number of comments as well.

More comments you make, the more experienced commenter you will become, that means soon it will be no problem for you to leave 15 meaningful comments in one hour. And believe me this hour is a great investment in the development of your blog.

2. Reply, reply, reply and REPLY!

So your hard work finally starting to pay off. You are receiving first great comments, which just enriched your articles in the way you were not thinking before, that is what I like the most about comments the diversity of opinions that will make your article deeper more useful and more interesting.

Great comments deserve a great attention. So never forget to write back on such comments. You are not doing it just to show that you appreciate your commenters but also you are trying to create a real discussion here. Why would you want to create such discussion?

Simply because creating discussions and getting new inputs from other people is the point of blogging. You will be able to move forward, to educate yourself, to become a better person and a better blogger as well.

Yes, and also because such conversation will bring you even more comments.

3. Notify your commenters

But no matter how hard you would try to create a conversation, if your commenters do not know that you replied on their comments there is only a small chance they will return back to check whether you replied or no.

That’s why this third point is crucial to your comment success. You are going to need to install two plugins (I assume here you are blogging on WordPress, if no than you should).

Subscribe to Comments Plugin
This handy plugin will give your commenters an option to subscribe to future article’s comments via email. It is a good method how to increase a chance that your commenters will return back.

But a drawback of this plugin is that people often do not realize there is a small box that is needed to be checked to start receiving notifications, or simply they are to busy to check it.

Therefore there is another plugin, which solves this issue and although some people might consider it a little bit pushy I think it is one of the best plugins that every blog should have (I have never received any negative feedback on it).

Comment Reply Notification
This plugin is really great and it has many options so you can modify it according to your needs. You can set it to send an email notification to the comment author every time a reply is made or every time you (as the blog author) reply.

I would suggest you to go with the second option, you do not want to overwhelm your commenters with too many notifications, do you?

This plugin really works because people will receive directly into their inboxes your replies and they will most likely read it. If they consider your reply interesting enough they will come back and write an additional comment and this is how the real discussion starts.

I love your #2 point, not all blogger reply all comment from readers, I saw this and I think this method could help us increasing comment on our blog posts.
  2. jj says:
Really good information. I've added your site to my bookmarks and will definitely be coming back for more. Keep up the good work!
  3. Raj says:
Thanks for these great tips Adam! I'm new to this whole blogging arena and been wondering how to get comments. It is sometimes discouraging but at least now I know where I need to improve. Cheers!
  4. Sarah says:
Great tips! For me, commenting on that many blogs can be overwhelming, but I'm fairly new to blogging and I think I'll get the hang of it.
  5. Delena Silverfox says:
This is so true! My dinky little Blogger blog was getting no traffic. I've spent the last couple weeks posting to just 5 blogs a day (or so) because I have a 5 month-old and it's all I can manage, but it's working. I finally saw a bit of traffic starting yesterday and a couple comments. It's not much, but a trickle can soon become a flood if I keep at it! And yes, I've been hard at work moving my blog to WordPress and learning it. It's hard, but all the things that are worth learning take time. Thanks for the encouragement! Delena
  6. Morgan Barnhart says:
Hi Adam, All great advice! And it really does work! I don't know about you, but I love reading the comments on blogs and whenever I see an interesting post from that commenter, I'll instantly open it up in a new tab. I love to discover new blogs and new people and I hope others feel the same way! :) Thanks for this awesome post! Cheers!
  7. Val says:
Good advice for those who want more comments. I am personally still on the fence with this. Moderating and replying to a serious flow of comments can be very time-consuming. If only someone could suggest a method how to handle a large number of comments efficiently with limited time... Blogger gurus, I can see a good article topic here!
  8. Braxton Miller says:
I can't seem to find the time to reply to comments on my sites, can't the commentators just have a nice conversation amongst themselves prior to purchasing something from one of my advertisers?
  9. Mani Viswanathan says:
Asking for comments would also play a part in getting more comments when your blog is relatively new.
    • Adam says:
Hi Mani, thanks for your input. Yes you can also ask for comments, or you can ask the questions related to your article.
  10. Dean Saliba says:
Very good tips. I am happy to report that I do all three of those that you have listed. I use the subscribe to comments plugin which seems to help attract commenters back to look at the replies.
    • Adam says:
Hi Dean, I am happy to hear you liked the tips and they all work for you. I usually do not subscribe to comments, because then your inbox might get "spammed" by 20+ new reply notifications. Thanks for joining discussion.
  11. robin thomas says:
most webmasters are now closing off comments option .since its mostly spam in their comments.
    • Adam says:
Hi Robin, well you can moderate which comment to publish and which to trash and also with the plugins such as Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin and WP-SpamFree those spams should not be that big problem anymore.
  12. Adam says:
Hi Grag, I am happy to help and I wish you all the best with your new blog!
  13. Sonita says:
I read so many small-mid size blogs, but I don't comment much-I need to work on that, thanks for the reminder!
    • Adam says:
Hi there, yep you should try it, you will notice that small and middle-sized bloggers appreciate comments much more and most of them will come back to read your articles and if they like what they read they will leave a comments.
  14. Ashley Pichea says:
I often miss when bloggers comment back to me, if they don't have a notification system in place - especially since I don't like to subscribe to the comments (inbox clutter). I personally use Disqus for my blog, and I love the ability to respond to individual comments directly from my email. I will have to try your suggestion of spending an hour a day commenting on other mid-sized blogs (can you define this further - number of readers/comments per post?). Also, would you suggest sticking with the same blogs on a daily basis or commenting on new blogs each day?
    • Adam says:
Hi Ashley, I think the Comment Reply Notification plugin is one of the most useful plugin if you want to receive more comments. Because same as you also most of other people do not subscribe to comments and they often miss the reply on their comments. Regarding to the blogs where to comment I would say that size does not mater that much. Comment on all articles you consider interesting. Also the smallest blog might bring you new comments and visitors. But if you would prefer middle-sized blogs I would say if the blog receive somewhere 15 - 30 comments on each article it middle-sized blog (but this is how I see it:) And I prefer diversity commenting on different and new blogs will spread your words further. But of course you should have also your favorite blogs and become their superfan, that means you will read all the articles and become the regular commenter and retweeter.
      • Ashley Pichea says:
Thanks for the feedback. I will have to explore the Comment Reply Notification plugin when I move to WP (hopefully this spring). Unfortunately, Blogger doesn't have anything like it, but Disqus has been working well for me. Your thoughts on commenting and diversifying my commenting (and yet having "favorites") is on track with what I was thinking. Thanks for validating my thoughts!
  15. Andreas says:
An additional comment getting ideas is via facebook commenting groups, which is a group of people who are all committed to posting meaningful comments that make sense on each others blog. You can quickly increase the amount of quality comments this way.
    • Adam says:
Indeed Andreas, although I personally do not use FB for blogging purpose, I definitely can see that potential of facebook commenting groups. Thanks for sharing.
  16. Pritam says:
Getting more comments is somewhat difficult if you don't have big readership on your blog. I have analysed the situation by checking so many blogs that if you have a big traffic, comment luv enabled and you reply to your commenter there are big chances of getting more comments on your blog. All your 3 points will help a lot in getting more comments.
  17. Dan says:
Nice tips! Reply tip works very well for my blog! Another tip: write on topics that cause debate and discussion.
    • Adam says:
Hi Dan, I agree on that the topic you write about matters as well. If you write about some controversial topics you might receive more comments. Nice tip!
  18. Alex says:
I like the idea of first commenting on small/medium blogs so that you can get the wheels turning before you quit, but unfortunately not many know this thing. They just wander why people don't came to their spanking new and great article they pored their hearts into. I also like and recommended Ana's@trafficgenerationcafe idea to start a facebook tribe where you can gather blogers in your niche and then create comments campaigns to make the ball roll on your blogs and theirs. But like I said the sad thing is that not everybody knows this, and some who might have become a great blogger may have quit just because they had no idea on how to attract readers and comments.
    • Adam says:
Exactly Alex, lot of people just think like this: "Well, I will write a great article I will retweet it maybe on the Twitter and I will have to receive some comments!" It is not truth, you have to go out and put your energy in commenting. It is the best way how to promote your content in front of people who are interested in your niche. Thanks for great comment!
  19. TJ McDowell says:
I have noticed that I get a pretty decent number of comments from smaller blogs in my niche. What you were saying got me thinking - maybe blog commenting needs to be done with 2 completely different purposes at different times. If you're blog commenting as a link-building technique, the bigger blogs with bigger page rank are fine. If you're looking for people to visit your blog though, maybe some of the no-follow blogs with just a couple followers would be a good way to get comments back on your blog. It just stinks that not every small blog has commentluv installed. Don't you think?
    • Adam says:
Hi TJ, personally I do not care if the blog is do-follow or not. Why? Because I think Google PR sucks. You do not need it to make your blog a popular and engaging place so why to bother with that and limit your comments on big do-follow blogs only? Also when you consider the small value of backlinks generated this way. And I like that commentluv plugin, it makes commenting more attractive.
      • TJ McDowell says:
So when you say that you don't care if a blog is do-follow or not, are you also including CommentLuv blogs as do-follow? I've had a lot of success with getting my blog posts to rank in Google by commenting on sites with CommentLuv. I still definitely care about Google PR. As much as people talk about Google PR being dead, there are still ways that Google is definitely using PR even if it's not to make a high PR page show up higher in search results.
        • Adam says:
The thing is that also no-follow blog with no CommentLuv is still worthy to comment as far as the article is interesting. If your comment is good enough you can attract the blog owner and other readers to come to your blog and maybe to show them you are worthy to follow not only to read one article and forget about you. Well maybe I did not said it correctly, I think there are many niches where the Google PR might be still an useful thing, I am talking about the niches that are getting traffic solely (or mostly) from search engines. In this case higher PR (and better positioning in Google) could make a real different in the amount of visitors. However if you are focusing on the topics well let’s call them not-google friendly (the topics that people generally do not search through the search engines) than the PR is not that important.
  20. Blazing Minds says:
I like #2 It's one I try to abide to as much as I can, there is nothing worse than a one sided conversation ;)
    • Adam says:
I agree Blazing, creating a real discussion that is a great way how to turn one-time visitors to returning ones. You will show you are here not only to broadcast your content but also to listen and to communicate with every visitor on a personal level.
      • Blazing Minds says:
It's a shame that not all bloggers have the same attitude towards their blogs and visitors ;)
        • Adam says:
          :)
  21. Patricia says:
I like the #fan Friday idea. The other suggestions you have made I already do and it does make a difference. When I reply to all comments and regularly visit blogs and comment, it helps with traffic to my site and also with helping build community. Patricia Perth Australia
    • Adam says:
Hi Patricia, yep it does make a difference, unfortunately there are still lots of people who do not know this and they are wondering why one blog receives that huge amount of comments while mine doesn't?
  22. The Bad Blogger says:
Nice tips for increasing commentators, I usually uses "Thank Me Later" plugin... as it also does send email to every new commentator. This plugin is able to set the time of the email as to when it should send for example... once the commentator comment after about a day he or she will received an automatic email by me... well, I have written a post that's related to this plugin, and if you like to know how to fully use this plugin to your advantage, just reply me and I will post the link here... Anyway, thanks for sharing this 3 simple method, I believe it will benefit most new bloggers out there...
    • Adam says:
Hi bad blogger:) in fact I was deciding between the plugin you mentioned and Comment Reply Notification. They both do the same trick, and the good thing about your plugin is that you can set the exact time when to send a thank you email. Thanks for a contribution.
  23. DiTesco says:
I agree with all recommendations, period. For someone who is just starting in their journey these are without a doubt solid advices to get other people's attention and in turn reciprocate what you have done. All be it, this is to assume that you are actually leaving meaningful comments and relevant to the post you are reading.
    • Rahul says:
This is great info. People will comments if they undertstand what they have read. And agree if they think the writer is correct or they learn what they have read.
      • Adam says:
Hi Francisco and Rahul, the high quality of your comment is the must, of course you will not be able to catch the attention of others if you will post "Thank you for this article, dude!" comment. You need to read the article first and spend some time on your comment.
  24. Alison Moore Smith says:
Great, simple ways to keep the comments flowing.
    • Adam says:
Exactly Alison, I am glad you liked it:)
  25. Madav says:
Now I realized what the the mistake I done so far.I will definitely add subscribe to comment s plugin and other tips that I missed out in my blog. Any way thanks for sharing useful tips.
    • Adam says:
Hi Madav, good luck with your blog!
  26. James Pruitt says:
Comments are great. A couple of things I do is end a post with a question related to the topic, asking readers for their opinions, and using CommentLuv has helped get a lot more comments, especially when targeting other bloggers, but it helps on my other sites as well.
    • Adam says:
Good points James, asking the questions through the article and at the end will indeed make your readers to reply more. Also CommentLuv is a great plugin to increase the number of comments for your blog.
  27. Kevin says:
What's going on with commentluv? Anyways, I love that comment reply plugin. It's a great way to get extra exposure. I just set mine up about a week ago. I added my social links on top of that. It keeps the commenter coming back for more. Great to get a discussion going.
    • Adam says:
Hey Kevin, yes this plugin is wonderful. It is also good to have the widget with the most active commenters somewhere on your blog. Thanks for sharing!
      • Kevin says:
Yeah I've been thinking about that plugin also! I want to average a certain amount of comments per post before I put that widget on the side.
  28. Kharim says:
These are some really great tips to get comments on a new blog. Those are the stuff that I did as well to get people to comment. Nice post :)
    • Adam says:
Hi Kharim, it definitely works and every bloggers should spend at least an hour per day to comment on different blogs.
  29. Wasim Ismail says:
Comments is one of the ways of showing your expertise on other blog articles, and something that can't be afford to miss especially if your just starting out. You can also encourage others to comment on your post, by mentioning this in your article and also maybe reminding them at the end of your article.
    • Adam says:
Yes Wasim, comments are a great way how to promote your thoughts and your blog for free. The best thing is that your audience is dedicated. Well, if you are commenting on blogs from your niche.
  30. John Garrett says:
Nice. I was wondering where those "comment reply" notifications were coming from! Thanks for bringing that up, I'm going to get it implemented on my site right away.
    • Adam says:
Hi John, I am glad that I was able to bring this to your attention:)
  31. Don Power - Managing Editor Sprout Social Insights Blog says:
Hi Adam! Over at my blog - Sprout Social: Insights I encourage comments by featuring 4 commentors every Friday - with an excerpt of their comment, a comment of my own explaining the context and lost of links back to the commentors website, Twitter and original content. I call this feature #FANFRIDAY and anyone who is interested can cliuck on my commentluv link below to see the latest edition of #Fanfriday. Leave a comment on any post and you might get featured too! Thanks! - Don
    • Thomas says:
That is a really great idea Don! I have seen a lot of people using the top subscriber plugins (but am not really a fan of them), so highlighting them on a weekly basis seems like a much better idea!
    • Hesham says:
Hey Don, I like your #FanFriday idea a lot! keep rocking!
      • Don Power - Managing Editor Sprout Social Insights Blog says:
Thanks Hesham, thanks Thomas! We'd love to see you comment anytime on Sprout Social Insights! - Don
        • Adam says:
Don, this was really a great tip. You make your commenters really to stand out and take the commenting at your blog to another level. Really interesting idea.
  32. dandellion says:
Yup, those are the simple and effective truths. One thing that I have a problem with is that I need system for notifying me when new comments are posted as not all the blogs are nice enough to notify me. I used to use bloglines (I think that's the name of the service) but it went buggy and then ceased. Any replacement?
    • Adam says:
Hi there, I do not use bloglines, so am really not sure if there is any replacement for this. I think most of the blogs have some kind of notification at least the option to subscribe to the comments.
  33. Greg Farley says:
I really appreciate this advice. I just started blogging about 2 weeks ago. I have received a few comments, which were responded to. But, as you mentioned, I haven't had an avalanche of comments. I am going to implement your commenting strategy and see how that goes. Thanks for your time and expertise, it shows in your article.
