Finding Your Own Writing Voice

September 18, 2010 - Last Modified: December 7, 2012 by Caleb

Author Voice

An interesting thing happens whenever I read something that catapults my thought processes. As I read I can clearly hear the voice of the author in my head even though I have never physically heard their voice before. It has happened many times and has been verified when I finally do actually hear their voice… they sound the same as they did in my head.

Do you hear my voice?

What is this phenomenon and even more important how do I get you -who is reading this right now- to mentally hear my voice? Is it simply the words I choose along with the way I put them together or is there more to it?

Many advisers in this field have already said you must write about something you are passionate about. For instance:

  • If you are not into that particular subject…
  • If you do not get excited just thinking about it…
  • If it is not something you frequently keep up to date with…
  • If it is not something you can not wait to tell someone about…

Then where will you the words along with the way you will put them come from?

  • Will it come from advanced Google searching…
  • Will it come from Private Label Rights articles…
  • Will it come from advanced plagiarism…
  • Or will it come from your mother…

None of these will do if does not come totally from YOU…how can a reader hear your voice if the words are not yours?

So here is what you need to do:

  1. Choose a subject you are really into -everyone has something they are really into…
  2. Write it down using the words and phrases you would use to tell your best friend about it and…
  3. Edit it just enough to where it is readable and acceptable to the guidelines of the service you are publishing it to -DO NOT EDIT IT AS THOUGH AN ENGLISH PROFESSOR WILL BE READING IT or you may come across as boring and stuck-up.

Another solution I found was hiding in my cell phone all this time. It has a function that records about a minute of live real-time sounds such as: MY VOICE. So I simply record a brief synopsis of my opinion or comment, save it,then either very late at nights or very early in the mornings I write one post/article per recording.

Do not worry about looking like some type of loony psycho constantly talking to yourself using your cell phone because talking to yourself -regardless of what you have heard- can actually be quite therapeutic and helpful for assimilating your thoughts. It is a whole different meaning to your psyche when you hear your own voice talking back to you…I mean how can you NOT listen to YOU? Furthermore, people talk into their cell phones all the time…that is what its for!

No one has to know you are recording your thoughts and if they do know…so what?

Now I know making money online with a proven website template and built-in content can be a quick and highly profitable way to attain immediate success. But sooner or later you will inevitably run into a situation where cookie cutter sites just will not do it and you will actually have to write your own content. I am sure the steps above will help you get over this stumbling block to find your own unique writing voice.

Did you hear my voice just then? Good.

Sorry I totally missed the boat on this one Caleb and didnt see it until now. This is a wonderful post. Do you know I have seen more people stumble on this aspect of writing and blogging than anything else. And it makes sense as to why that happens to if you consider that one's voice ties in to their "why" or their purpose and it is really the foundation of one's entire web presence. Take care Caleb!

Hey Caleb. Good stuff, man. Lots of similarities in the articles we discussed. You know what they say about great minds! LOL Top post.

Its a simple as following your passion. Blogging what you love but with your own style. People love uniqueness and creativity. Learn and implement that. Thanks for awesome post.

Great post. It's really important these days in the era of a million blogs to really find your own voice and stand out among the crowd. It's the same in any industry. Uniqueness can never become a commodity. I like to get away from the hustle and go somewhere quiet with my ipad or laptop and just get down thoughts, stream of consciousness style. Talking to yourself definitely works too.
    • Caleb says:
"Uniqueness can never become a commodity..." This is certainly true online because there's so much available with easy tools for finding it all, but in the offline world there are certain pre-filtering entities which drastically reduce the amount of uniqueness. I am currently reading a book by Chris Anderson chief editor of Wired magazine titled The long Tail which discusses this phenomena in depth(This is a MUST READ!)

Interesting ideas. I think you're right on with writing about what you love. As far as the tape recorder, I always think I sound like a dork when I listen to myself afterwards. The way I imagine myself is way cooler =)

Great post - thought provoking and inspiring and very real too. At the end of the day - its worth making notes (written or recorded) so that we can go back to them and shape them into posts. I've only been blogging just over 1.5 year and I have learned a lot by just paying attention to how other bloggers pen out their thoughts, how to try to keep a regular set of posts coming, and even participating in linky memes until our own creative juices are flowing more regularly. At the end of the day - when one is writing - they have to write from the heart - listen to that inner voice of yours - and the writing naturally comes out :) I had written a post 'Your Voice. Your Blog. Your Blogger Voice' and 'Hello This iS Your Blogger Voice Calling' which I'd love to link to your post. http://dazedreflection.blogspot.com/2010/02/your-voice-your-blog-your-blogger-voice.html http://dazedreflection.blogspot.com/2010/02/hello-this-is-your-blogger-voice.html
    • Caleb says:
Glad you liked it. Although it is worthwhile to check how other bloggers pen their thoughts, make sure you think about the way you pen your thoughts when trying to explain something to a friend for example then write it down in that same way. This is why I also mentioned the voice recorder idea. Don't worry too much about the editing as it will come later.. ..and of course you can link to this post :)

I agree with everything you have said here, it is so important to have an individual voice (like yours) when writing a blog, it keeps readers like me interested!
  11. Suresh Khanal says:
I like your tips of recording the opinions and listening own voice for blog posts. Risley suggested to keep a pad and a pencil always so that you could note down the sparkle ideas when they occur. Recording on cell phone is much easier and more effective as well, I guess. I remember Omer Greenwald commenting on a post http://seommotips.com/blogging-tips/best-blogging-tips-writing-blog-posts-part-1/ suggesting to write a bit of a post every day. This way the ideas and opinions will get more time play in mind causing better refinement and perfection. Writing style and presentation is somewhat natural ability but needs to be polished by practice and lots of reading. Yes you are right to say the author's voice is audible in brain. But it is achieved when you really attain your own style. In the earlier stage, we tend to relate information and for this lots of references and cookie cutting is necessary. As you grow on, you'll start to depart your views, there comes the author's voice. Enjoyed your post. It was of a different taste to what I was used to these days!
    • Caleb says:
The voice recording method really works for me. I've gotten to the point where now all I really have to do is record the general idea and it just flows to paper...yes I still do write things down on paper first, I'm just use to it and it also serves as a hard copy backup!
      • Suresh Khanal says:
What would you call to writting a post in pieces every days with a hope that the post idea will get more time to play in brain so as to produce better refined post?
        • Caleb says:
Well that's sort of what some song lyricists do -especially rappers- in that they'll freestyle different sections at different intervals of time, then edit and put it all together later :!: I have used this technique for other projects, although I have yet to come up with a specific term for this..
  12. Steve says:
Voice is one of the most important things you can have in writing. It is the only thing that really separates your work from anyone else's. It is the reason why some people will really enjoy your writing and keep coming back. Simply put: It is damn important. Thanks for some wonderful tips on ways to find and develop voice in writing.
  13. Patricia says:
I write for my readers and so far from the comments I'm getting on my blog; my readers feel my passion for my niche. It helps when people visit and comment about the posts published cos then I get a feel for not only what they like but with the questions they ask; what next to blog about. Great post and thanks. Hi Caleb, I like your tips. As you noted if you can't find your voice building a following is a tough one. Who are your readers following? PLR articles, research, or YOUR take on a certain topic? Thanks for sharing your insight. Ryan
    • Caleb says:
Now I can't sat that I've never ever used a plr article before because they can come in handy for certain projects especially when you're just starting out, but if you're going to use one at least edit it with your own flavor.
  15. Oke Timothy says:
...wow...!!! I have not commented on this wonderful blog but I have read all post in the past one month or so. Today's topic is striking and I especially like the idea of speaking to my phone. I do that a lot of time but never used it for a blog post. Thanks man for this striking wonderful post. You are a genius! I'll to know you personally other than on blog level. Your posts are inspirational. Keep up the good work!
  16. Moon Hussain says:
I have to comment just because this is a unique post. Now... I honestly have to say I don't hear anyone's voice while I'm reading their post. Of course, certain bloggers have made a great impression with their content so they have my attention primarily that way.... but never their voice :)
    • Caleb says:
I've never heard anyone else say they hear the voices in the way I do either, but it's actually true for me, just don't call the guys in the white jackets to institutionalize me :)
  17. Henway says:
Great points. I've seen so many newbies write their blog as if they're writing a college paper, or an essay. You can tell whether they're passionate or not simply by the way they write. One of the problems I'm having though is writing on a topic I'm passionate about, and one that is easily monetizable. I love to write about spirituality but it's a topic that's hard to make money from.
    • Caleb says:
I promise you that you CAN make money from just about any subject - even spirituality! Just find affiliate products that match it and weave the links(masked of course ;) ) within your posts...you can even start off with just infolink type ads until you find the right aff products. There are multitudes of people who want/need more info on spirituality so just continue blogging your unique angles on it and point your readers to links that will give them more details. Read the post at the end of this reply for more inspiration.. ..Hope this helps :)
