Is Guest Blogging the Constructive Future of Internet Marketing?

September 23, 2010 - Last Modified: February 14, 2013 by Steve Logan

Guest Blogging & Marketing

Love it or hate it, there’s no avoiding the role of SEO in shaping the Internet as we know it. One way or another, techniques for improving a site’s position within the pages of Google has directly influenced what we read, source and buy every day.

Unfortunately not all of the techniques Internet marketers use could be described as ethical. In fact many are quite the opposite. Shady practitioners spam message boards, create homogenised link farms and generally clutter the Internet with worthless content. Their goal? Simple, get a link at any cost.

Stepping Away from Spam

This brand of opportunistic blanket spamming does little to improve the reputation of an industry already tainted with widespread mistrust and accusations. Despite this though it continues, and will do so until websites no longer see the benefit of this diligent scattergun approach.

But there is another way. Off site SEO efforts can be constructive and even beneficial to the wider online community. One such technique is guest blogging.

Trade Knowledge for Exposure

Writing a guest blog post, such as this, is a great way to share your knowledge, develop writing skills and increase your online visibility. It isn’t simply about SEO though. Writers are rewarded with exposure, which can lead to future opportunities and develop their social presence online.

However, you won’t be rewarded for writing a spam-filled post overflowing with errors and nonsense. With guest blogging you will only ever get out of it what you are prepared to put into it first. If you’re just chasing a couple of links and don’t focus on the quality of content you’ll be found out.

For any writer there is an inherent responsibility attached to producing content for somebody else’s blog. By putting your work into the public domain beyond the sanctuary of your own blog or site you open yourself up to rejection or ridicule. If you fall below the required standards you simply won’t get published.

Being Constructive Rather than Destructive

With all the nonsense that does go on in the world of SEO and Internet marketing generally, guest blogging offers a more positive and productive solution. Writers and sites can benefit from creating quality content that will actually help readers. They can share their knowledge and skills with an audience beyond their usual parameters.

Of course guest blogging is a two way street. Whilst writers can hope to earn a link and share their views with the wider world, a host site gets quality content to develop their blog. The ability to pick and choose which articles to publish affords the blog owner the freedom to separate the wheat from the chaff. Or, to put it in more pleasant terms, weed out low quality articles that don’t fit in with the site’s overall message or fall short of expected standards.

It’s not just the reputation of the writer on the line remember. If a blog has published a few duff posts, it’s likely to lose credibility and even some regular readers. Therefore when it comes to guest blogging, ensuring the highest standards on both sides is mutually beneficial.

Rewarding Quality

With quality at the forefront, guest blogging is undeniably one of the more positive Internet marketing activities. It’s not a hive for spam and it doesn’t reward everybody equally. As a writer you have to earn any link that you want. As a host you have complete editorial power but shoulder the risk.

The more interesting, provocative and thoughtful content there is on the Internet, the better it becomes. Whilst there isn’t much any SEO can do about those who will deliberately flout spam rules, they can certainly ensure they don’t fall into the same trap. It’s constructive and hugely beneficial.

Develop Your Own Writing Skills

Whilst writing decent content takes time, it is far from being a worthless activity. As a writer I look to stretch myself every time I put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard). Many others no doubt feel the same. So the opportunity to produce more content is also a chance to develop skills.

You can learn a lot from comments too. This is where you’ll find out what people really think and identify areas where improvements can be made. By exposing yourself to new audiences you can expect a fresh perspective too.

Whilst Internet marketers and SEO practitioners in particular have a professional reputation on a par with traffic wardens, guest blogging is an escape from all that. It shows creativity, understanding of a subject and adds value. Just because both sides stand to benefit, there’s a wider gain for readers that helps it transcend traditional optimisation techniques.

Can you rely solely on guest blogging for your online marketing efforts? Probably not. Should you be looking to integrate it with your current efforts though? Almost certainly. It’s positive, proactive and offers opportunities aplenty, what more can you ask for?

Hi!I´m about to have my first guestblogger on my site next week and I´ve got a manuscript that I need to get done for a guestpost that I want to do.Thanks for the post here. It reminds me of the urgency of getting my post done and off. More communication and networking through guestblogging is something I think is valuable!! Sincerley, Sanna

Writing a guest blog post, this is really what I'm targeting. I find this technique really good and worth-ed. Thanks for sharing your tips. Thumbs up!
  3. chris says:
excellent write up. There really is nothing more annoying than having people spam blog's as a guest writer. Not only do these comments NOT get posted but just about everyone who has a blog also has akismet which will catch 99.9% of the garbage that people try to post in the first place! Don't post garbage! Plain and simple.
  4. Latief says:
This day I received few email that asking for being my guest blogger but they goal is just to put their links, what do you think about this bro? Should I receive blogger like this? Thanks
  5. Paul Tech says:
Guest posts are a good chance for bloggers to cut their teeth on writing good content, they also get more exposure and responses on popular sites.
  6. Usama says:
Your words can influence people and you can get more exposure. More exposure means more visits on your blog. Thanks.
  7. Caleb says:
Guest posting is one of the most ethical ways of getting a quality link back plus it builds authority for the writer.
  8. Pankaj Gupta says:
Now a days, Guest Blogging is becoming a key for the success of a website and I am sure it will be adopted by many new bloggers in future too.
  9. TJ McDowell says:
I think you make a good point about SEO spam. As search engines get smarter, spammy techniques will become less and less valuable to better rankings. I think any SEO technique that requires actual thought will start to become more important.

Hi Steve, These are great reasons for people to consider guest posting. I'd add that everyone should be very selective and careful about it. All hosts want guest posts, but the trade-off isn't always good. It's worth it to write for active blogs with decent size readership than it is to spend a lot of time writing stellar posts on guest blogs that are never read, or on blogs where the readership isn't active enough to click a link back to your site. FamousBloggers is a good guest blogging channel.
  11. Tinh says:
You might be right to some extents as it is a great way for link building and exposure for more traffic then guest blogging still work in the near future :-) However, I am not sure when Google will never dominate the search market and when the Pagerank is not the indicator to measure the quality of a website :-)
  12. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Steve, Guest blogging is a technique to get more and strong back links, but what many people are missing is to use the whole blog text as anchor text for the tags and key words for its own site or blog. (Which you have not forgotten in this guest blog)
  13. Biodun says:
One of the major problems that we face while working on our blogs is the lack of content on regular basis, so getting lots of guest posts on our blogs can be more beneficial. Top the guest poster the advantage is huge, If you can use the proper strategies and have your mind set towards creating a quality guest post – you will be rewarded for it.
  14. James says:
It's an interesting take. Still not entirely convinced about the approach. My thinking is - for example - EzineArticles. Alexa rating of 128 or so. A blog? hm...unless it's Seth Godin's blog - not nearly as much traffic. Good points, for sure, not to be argumentative (not really anyway) - but as an article marketer who has made good money apart from guest posting (except on one occasion, and was hired for it)...it still seems like a bit of a narrow net to cast. Having said that, I'm about to do more of it simply because I'd like to see the effect. I suppose it depends on the blog in question, however, as far as the "mutual" benefit (a blog with no traffic/readers would just be...wasted effort it seems).
    • Steve Logan says:
I don't think article marketing is without its merits. If it's done properly and with an eye on originality and actually providing useful information, it's a great way of earning links without causing unnecessary online clutter. As with article marketing though, creating or writing for a blog is about being targeted. It has to be relevant and preferably have some strength behind it (as with Famous Bloggers). So if you had a good article you wouldn't submit it to a PR1 generic article directory, the same is true of guest blogging. Write something interesting, approach the top blogs in that field and see if they'll publish it. It is a little bit of a gamble I guess, but certainly has its benefits. Thanks for your comments and offering an alternative viewpoint, much appreciated.
    • Tia Peterson says:
James, You bring up a very good point and I too question the value of guest posting over other sites for traffic. That said, it has it's other benefits. I just don't consider traffic one of them, unless it's on a site like this one, and your post is stellar. I still get a decent flow of traffic from my guest post here, and it even outshines the traffic I get from regular, weekly spots on the other sites. So... that tells me then that guest posting has to be just as strategic as high-quality linking!
  15. Imran says:
I have been comment regularly on various blogs in term to drive traffic, and had been and people responded well, from 0 to 100 visit a day by comment on other blog networks. And also made few online friends.... I did made a guest post before starting my blog, and I was happy with results. Since I am busy with designing and redesigning to learn more I not able to do any of the guest posting on other blogs. If I want to guest post on other blogs who do I go, i:e weekly once or monthly once. I required your expertise advice... Thanks
  16. Melvin says:
I think yes, is the answer. The fine line between traditional internet marketing and blogging is getting thinner and closer. Internet marketers who used to rely heavily on lists and advertising are now tapping heavily into the blogosphere to make sure that they maximize their traffic.
  17. panther says:
Guest posting pretty much sums up the function of blogging. Reading and learning from others is a daily experience we all learned since the days of school. You never stop expanding your horizons. The mind is a terrible thing to waste.......
  18. Jasmine says:
Guest blogging is a good way to get backlinks. And for the blog you guest blog on, the blog gets quality content. Win-win deal. :)
  19. Andreas says:
Guest blogging is simply a way to create the most powerful backlinks surrounded by relevant content to a site AND direct targeted traffic from the source where the guest post is published. This is why it will replace the traditional article marketing methods within the next few years.
    • James says:
I seriously doubt that article directories will ever go the wayside, for a number of reasons. Not the least of which is that advertising and sharing knowledge through articles has pre-dated the internet by...centuries. The internet expands, but doesn't replace its very foundation, articles being one of them. At this juncture, I'd agree with a former commenter: the line between blogging and IM is razor thin. I'm sure you can guess which boat I'm in! To the original author: definitely enjoyed the article and tips. Very poignant. I think we'd disagree on backlinking strategy, however. That's where I fall on my IM roots.

Yes.All Bloggers know that Guest Blogging is the best way to make a Zero Blog become Popular Blog. But Writing a GuestPost is not easy with newbie blogger and they should try hard to improve their writing skill, knowledge and own writing style.
  21. Pritam says:
This is true. Guest blogging is one of the good way to internet marketing provided you throw good contents. It not only helps to bring the traffic but develops the writing skills effectively. Its good to make an approach while considering the above points. Thanks for this Great Post. Pritam Nagrale
  22. Patricia says:
Interesting take on guest posting. I would like to ask a question as a newbie blogger. I am in a small niche so the chances of me guest posting in my own niche are small. I have been asked to guest post on 2 sites but they don't have comments section and are more about selling the products so I have held off. Should I look to guest posting in other niches or just get others to guest post for me? Appreciate your input on this one and thanks Patricia Perth Australia
    • Steve Logan says:
It all depends on how small that niche is I guess Patricia. There are plenty of broader blogs offering guest opportunities in sections like health, business and so on. So if there was nothing of any particular strength within your actual niche, you could look to broaden slightly and find one of these more general blogs and post there. Relate your posts to the blog's tone and the type of posts that they produce. For example, if you were writing about lavender, you could perhaps talk about some of the health benefits and get that submitted to a home remedy style blog. Keep it on subject and you'll attract and audience that is looking for information on your niche (knowingly or otherwise). Inviting guest posts is a good way of building up a blog and developing wider awareness, however you just need to be sure that the posts themselves are up to standard. They should blend in with your own and shouldn't wander too far off-topic. Anyway, hope that helps a little, and thank you for your comment.
      • Patricia says:
Thanks Steve for your input. It has helped and just yesterday I was asked if I would guest post when a fellow blogger starts their health blog. Patricia Perth Australia
  23. Rick LaPoint says:
Between Guest Posting and leaving comments, the blogging world is like a close-knit neighborhood where each neighbor takes turns hosting a block party. Everyone benefits. There's always a party to attend, and everyone has the opportunity to be the perfect host, and master the responsibilities and logistics of content and relationships. No one can be a wallflower :-) Rick
  24. Suresh Khanal says:
Thanks Steve. It is in fact putting your dish in front of guests and observe their faces for reaction. Guest blogging really provides opportunity to watch lots of face of faces at once. A great thumb up for you!
  25. Jered says:
I've found that a lot of my most quality traffic comes from people who have read my guest post, like it, and want to "check me out." I think what's so great about guest posting is that it allows you to inject your content into someone else's site to help their readers, and in turn get more people following your site. This is definitely a topic worth discussing, though, as there are some people who do not support guest posting and think it's a waste of time.
  26. Henway says:
Guest blog posting definitely could be a win-win situation for both sides involved. It gives you so many benefits: from a link, more readers who'll visit over and over, and a new perspective from the comments you receive. With Google devaluing many types of links (from link farms, directories, spam links, forum signatures, etc), a link from a blog post is one of the highest quality links you can get.
  27. Jeevan Jacob John says:
Great. You have hit the darts at the right spots ! I do agree with you on all points. Guest Blogging is a mutual deal. Exposure/Traffic for you while the Author gets a vacation. Most people don't Guest Blog since they fear failure. I think you missed that point. I would say they have to try. Anyway, Thanks for the great post Jeevan Jacob John
  28. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Steve, I like your take on guest posting, especially when it comes to comments. I recently wrote my first guest spot for FB and like you said it introduces you to a fresh new perspective. Thanks for sharing your insight. Ryan
  29. Steve says:
Great post on the powers of guest posting. It is one of the absolute best things on the internet in my opinion. Done right it truly is a win-win for everyone. The writer gets quality backlinks, improves reach, improves reputation and gets his "word" out The Blog owner gets quality content (a guest post should be among a blogger best stuff) And the readers get a fresh viewpoint and also get to read great quality content. You really cannot beat a situation where everyone walks away a winner.
