How Google Changed the Way We Think and Remember [infographic]

Google And Memory

I have been wondering for long time, how Google -the most powerful search engine on the planet- helped us to find the information we are looking for without having to remember where we found it the first time, or have to store it any where on our computer, or forced to take a single note to remind us. It’s all there on the Internet, all what you have to do is to Google it, and you will find it.

I remember back in the old days, and before the internet extended rapidly with huge spaces as the way it is today, I used to download every single program or ebook being afraid of losing it and no longer find it. The ideal way was to keep stuff you need always safe on your own computer, you don’t trust the internet because people don’t have large spaces, so they likely remove the old stuff to put newer stuff.

Google and Memory!

Today, things are different, everything is on the internet almost all the time, so we can live with no worries to lose something we want to download latter. Google also has a strong impact on our memory, because you don’t have to remember where was that page, ebook or program you need, you don’t have to remember everything, not anymore!

I think Google is like the GPS, it won’t let you remember an address, or the way back home, maybe because you can always find out where you are, and simply find your way back home with a few clicks on the screen!

Check out this cool infographic by Online Colleges site, it show the impact of Google on our memory, it’s really interesting.

maybe this was the reason why Google was still on top
  2. Jodi says:
It's not just Google but technology on the whole that we have become so desperately depended upon. Without it we will surely be lost. Gone are the days when we would pick up a book and read, now people just prefer going online and skimming through stuff. I think technology has just made our memory weaker.
  3. who cares says:
this is complete an utter bullshit, while you can find answers to trivia questions, it is often extremely difficult or flat out impossible to find any in depth information on any story or topic, and forget about finding anything from last year or before, there are so many dead links and so much information, videos, pictures etc... deleted it almost makes the internet a simple marketing and shopping tool. the promise of the information superhighway with endless avenues for every book written, movie made, song sung, has never even come close to fruition, in fact other than buying some crap i may or may not really need, e-mail for work and free porn i find the internet of little value.

I'm not sure about life being too hard without Google. After all, if Google is not around, an equally powerful company would be in its place. But without Google, who would entertain me with quirky doodles almost every week? :)
  5. Saket Jajodia says:
We are so used of Google that we can't even think anything without it. In every 2nd thing we need Google.. It became a part of our life even more then our GF/BF is.. :P Our GF/BF don't that much as much Google knows about us.. [If my GF get to know that Google knows more about me then she dose then she going to breakup with me].. :P
  6. Monica says:
I too sometimes wonder if the heavy reliance we have on new technologies affects our critical thinking skills and memory retention, not to mention social skills? However, I have always used Google and rely on the internet and my cellphone nearly as much as my teenagers, so I'm just as guilty. The infographic is stellar and I can honestly say that it would be extremely difficult to function without Google. I think your article on society's use of Google was fascinating!

love the infoGraphic, thanks for sharing, and yeah!! I can't imagine the life without Google, Google is the life blood of the internet!!
  8. Jane says:
Indeed Google has influenced a lot of our personal and business life. We strive so hard to please google in our online business in general. Google surely is an influencer.
  9. Joy says:
Google has been my go-to search engine and although I've benefited from it, sometimes I like learning and retaining information without the help of it. But I definitely agree, Google has been so part of our life, it's unimaginable without it.
  10. Sanjay Heras says:
Well written article Hesham. Google really has changed our lives in many ways. Not only we make money through this, we are fully dependent in remembering many things. If I would be given an option either Google or all the search engine in the world, I will go for Google. Its GOD for many. Thanks for sharing this.

It is true but not with just Google, it's technology. I noticed that the more I use GPS the harder it is to find things without it. We got along just fine without these "necessities" but now we can't live without them. When's the last time you forgot your phone at home and didn't run back and get it right away? Unfortunately, for me anyway, both of those examples are powered by Google. lol
  12. Ming Jong Tey says:
Hey Hesham, That's interesting. I haven't thought about it that. The only thing I think of is that kids are extremely smart these days, even a kindergarten kid is very tech savvy...Though it seems to have impact om our memory, the good thing is knowledge is only 1 search away :) Cheers, Ming
  13. Steve says:
Hesham, Great infographic here man! thanks for sharing it. It is so true. This ease of access to information is both an incredible boon and a hindrance, since it does hinder peoples ability to learn the things they need to know on that deeper level. I know for sure if I was in high school quite a few essays would be re-written from wikipedia. But on the other side, this access to knowledge also has to put us into an information and communication golden age. I guess no matter how good something is there comes a dark side. (and no matter how bad comes a good side.) -Steve
  14. Gail Gardner says:
If you keep notes like I do you will find that what you want to find again is often NOT in Google anywhere you can easily get back to it. Google only shows you what they want you to see - and over time that will be less and less from smaller sites and more and more from Big Brands. This is no secret - their SEO announced it in his now infamous "the Internet is a cesspool" and brands are how you clean it up comment. (There is an excellent post on SEOBook about it.) I for one could live without Google and the world would be a MUCH better place where abundance was more evenly distributed if they had less of a monopoly online. Few realize the danger of handing Google so much control over what we see. I have written about it many times and highly recommend reading my Google Fairy post. I'll put it in the regular URL field so you can find it more easily.
  15. Grady Pruitt says:
It's hard to imagine, but it is so true. Without the internet (and Google), we tended to memorize and learn things more. In a way, I think we're turning into the extreme of what Einstein used to do..."Why learn things I can look up in just a few minutes?" Having all this information at our fingertips is great, but that means we need to learn to think for ourselves so we can use the information available to us. Thanks for sharing!
  16. Isha Singh says:
Well, Google now became a part of life. Even in our office with experts, all are advised to search problems in Google and Wikipedia. My most of the time passes with Google.
  17. Mushfique says:
Google on the dark side, is actually destroying the students. For academic purposes, if any types of reports or projects are given, we tend to just GOOGLE it instead of researching the topic and coming up with something unique. On the bright side, it's making our life easier with all the products they are providing us :D
    • Gregory C. says:
Couldn't you just say that Google is just a starting point for research though? I use Google to find articles and other more "scholarly" places to research information, Google in simply the tool that gets you to an end, and I don't think it destroys "proper" research if used correctly.
      • Mushfique says:
Maybe I have put it in the wrong way. Yes, research in Google and then come up with something unique. From my experience and what I have seen most of my friends and others doing, they just copy the information and paste it. 'Plagiarism' is what I was trying to mean :)
  18. Harleena Singh says:
I couldn't agree more Hesham! Life without Google is unimaginable for me as well, though others like Bing and Yahoo are there. But somehow, I am always for Google. Things have indeed simplified a great deal where you just don't need to store or memorize anything, thanks to Google! I love this infographic and the way it depicts the benefits of Google. Thanks for sharing :)
  19. Alan Tay says:
That is quite true. I no longer remember any web address today. I can simply go to one site by accessing Google first. I can really agree whereby you put Google as our GPS. Whenever we are lost, just turn on the GPS :)
