How to Generate Traffic Without Spending a Dime

March 30, 2011 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Stacy Claflin 7,634

Free Blog Traffic

Every blogger, whether new or seasoned, wants to know about traffic generation in order to bring the most traffic as possible to the blog. There are always new strategies to learn and old strategies to unlearn because they don’t work anymore.

Many new bloggers are intimidated by the process because it seems like a monumental task as there is so much to learn. Often, they feel that they don’t have enough money to generate any real traffic because all they hear about are paid methods.

You can pay for all of the following:

  • Hire someone to optimize your blog
  • PPC Advertising
  • Traffic generation tools and products
  • Hire a mentor
  • Purchase an ebook on the topic
  • Affiliate products recommended by other bloggers
  • Hire someone to optimize your Facebook page
  • Autoresponder
  • Much more – if someone can think it up, they will sell it

But the truth is, You don’t have to spend money to generate traffic!

There are many ways that you can bring in new traffic on a budget, even if your budget is free until your blog is bringing in enough money for you to purchase the paid products that you desire.

Free Traffic Generation Methods

When you give an honest effort at the following free methods ,you will see real results! I suggest you take a screen shot of your Alexa ranking and site statistics before you start. Then you can compare the results by taking another screen shot every month or two.

Blog Commenting

Commenting on other blogs is a very effective way to bring traffic to your blog. If you follow some basic rules, you will find others drawn to your blog from your comments on other blogs:

  • Leave valuable comments by adding value to what the author has written. When people see that you have a lot of value to offer they will want to see what other gems you are sharing on your blog.
  • Respond to the post content. If you haven’t read the post it will be obvious to everyone who reads your comment. You will look bad, and people will be repelled from your blog.
  • Be respectful with your tone and words, especially if you have a differing opinion from the author – it is acceptable to disagree.

If you are serious about generating traffic, you will want to comment at least 8-10 times a day or at least 40-50 times a week. Comment on blogs in your direct niche as well as blogs that are in similar niches. You want people to recognize your name and your face!

Be sure to get around to different blogs, not always commenting on the same ones day after day and week after week. Though it’s perfectly fine to have regulars – that is a great way to build relationships with other bloggers. You want to have a good balance between regulars and new or less frequent blogs.

Join Social Networks

Join as many of the social networks as you can keep up with. Try some new ones ,because they all offer something different and you may end up really liking one that you didn’t want to try. If you find that you really do not like one then try another. Use the ones that work best for you! Social networks are a great way to promote your posts and meet like-minded people.

There are many that you can join. Some of the bigger ones are Facebook, Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon, and LinkedIn. Look around. There are a lot of social networks that you can join and many niche-focused networks are becoming popular as well.

Voting sites are a great way to network with others as well, and they often offer a lot of ways to build community. Two voting sites that I really like are Blokube and Serpd. Both offer voting buttons that you can put on your posts so that your readers can vote for your post. They also offer commenting on the site and a sense of community.

Create a Free Report

A quick way to make a free report is to gather some of your best material from your blog and combine them into an ebook. Put links to your blog into the book and give it away on your blog, sharing the link on your social media sites. You can also add your ebook to one of the many free ebook sites which accept submissions.

Learn Basic SEO

Learning basic SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is not nearly as intimidating as learning all the ins and the outs of SEO. Once you learn the basics then you can move on to learning the more complicated and intimidating aspects.

Use the Google Keyword Tool to research your keywords for free. Use the free SEO plugins that are available in your WordPress dashboard such as the All in One SEO plugin and the Clean SEO Slugs plugin. Using these plugins will help you to optimize your blog for SEO simply and easily until you learn more about it.

Forum Marketing

Establishing yourself as an expert in your niche through the use of forums or message boards can be a valuable tool in bringing people to your blog. You should have the goal to start one new thread a day or five throughout the week in addition to replying to other posts.

If the forum allows links in your signature you can have a link directly to your blog, but don’t blatantly promote your blog in the posts. You want to instead establish yourself as an expert through the posts that you write. Direct people to your signature which should have not only the link but a little blurb about yourself and your expertise.

Other Free Generation Methods

  • Create videos on Youtube
  • Write guest posts on similar blogs
  • Join a tribe
  • Link to other blog posts in your posts
  • Answer questions at Yahoo Answers directing to blog posts
  • Join a blogging challenge

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments and don’t forget to share this with your followers! Thank you!

Hi Stacy, Thank you so much for the valuable tips. The article is quite informative and I found these methods very useful to generate traffic to my site. I've bookmarked your website. I'll tell my friends about it. keep posting.
  10. Dobrisa says:
I mostly agree with you, though leaving comments on other blogs is very time consuming job 8 to 10 times a day can take 2 or more hours a day, since you have to read the post, than maybe even make a bit of a research and than write something that would have sense, other problem is that most of the bloggers will ignore your comment if you leave back-link to your website.
    • Stacy says:
Hi Dobrisa, Many bloggers chose to comment on 2-4 blog daily and they still build up a good stream of backlinks. You can gain them through leaving your website in the website portion of the comment form and through the commentluv. There is no need to put the link in the comment itself to get the backlink. Stacy
  11. Wan Lin says:
Hi, you do have a few good tips. What i recommend will be to submit to articles directory like ezine as they provide free advertising if they would like to use your content and one more thing if you provide useful contents to your viewers, they will come back to you for more.
    • Stacy says:
Yes, there are some great article directories to submit to that give some great blog exposure for free!
  12. AstroGremlin says:
Stacy, congrats on your article being among the most commented upon in 2011! Your advice is still right on the money for 2012. My favorite method is commenting and now, with CommentLuv enabled, it's more effective than ever.
    • Stacy says:
Thank you! I agree, CommentLuv is a wonderful tool for bloggers! Thanks, Stacy
  13. Janus says:
Hi Stacy, I love reading your posts and will definitely visit your website more frequently. Traffic generation is one of the biggest challenges for online entrepreneurs. It will help a lot of people if there is information that focuses on only the methods that get results with a better use of time. I believe in staying focused and using two or three methods at a time. And use them consistently. Thanks for sharing truly valuable information!
    • Stacy says:
Thank you very much, Janus! It's been a pleasure getting to know you over on my blog last month! Happy new year! Stacy
  14. Etieno Etuk says:
Awesome strategies. Before reading this post, I wasn't aware of voting sites Blokube and Serpd. Concerning Youtube, I've learned that even if you don't create your own videos, you can favorite other people's videos. Make sure that the videos that you're adding to favorites are videos that are interesting and valuable. I don't do a lot of videos but I have people subscribing to my channel everyday and checking out my blog after they've done that. Also, if you watch a video that you like on Youtube, leave a comment saying what you took out of it. You'll find that if your comment is interesting, people are likely to visit your channel and if your blog is listed there, they're likely to visit it. Thanks for putting this post out, Stacy. I have enjoyed reading it.
  15. Mark says:
Stacey, Great article. I personally focus on basic SEO and Forum Marketing as my main sources of traffic because I have found that they bring the most targeted traffic which, in turn, converts at the highest rate. Additionally, the aforementioned techniques work great with list building...:) Mark

  20. Nelly Paekukui says:
Hi Stacy, What an incredible post here with many tips and recommendations for building traffic. 21. Drew Rafferty says:
Nice new blog design and a wonderful way of gaining plenty of free traffic. Nothing like being able to hire writers though.
  22. Argie Monroy says:
I usually opt in to voting sites such as Blog Engage to give me a substantial amount of traffic. Although i'm an SEO technologist, I dont practice SEO for my blog to gain traffic..
  23. Phil says:
Hi Stacy, could you please suggest to me some of those sites that accept free ebooks (some that you've used before woud be really helpful). Thank you!
  24. Diana Eftaiha says:
great post. the point regarding putting together a free ebook of the best material of the blog got me thinking. i guess its a nice idea. i was thinking to offer such an ebook for users who subscribe to my email updates. but how do i do that then? do i just export all my feedburner emails and send them the material or is there other better way like plugins or online services (or maybe google services)?
  25. Heather C Stephens says:
Hi Stacy! Wow, what an amazing post! I love free methods for traffic generation because they make it possible for EVERYONE to succeed! You listed so many great options for someone to find the way that fits them best. Guest posting is probably what I've seen the biggest spikes in traffic from but a tribe, blog commenting and social media give me the steadiest traffic! I think all in all it's a balancing act of doing both...keeping the traffic you have coming back regularly and attracting new traffic to grow! I'm so sorry I didn't see this sooner to help you promote it more. I think you did an amazing job and I'm so excited to see how well you've done! Way to go Stacy! You absolutely Rock! Where do you find the time to do all you do? I am always amazed by all you get done. Hugs, Heather
  26. Mavis Nong says:

  27. Rob says:
Stacy, Great tools for the shed. I've been using only a couple of these and not to the extent you mention (40-50 comments a week). Time being as it is: What source would you use if you could only do one? or, Which source do you consider to be an absolute must? Thanks. Live it LOUD!
  28. Usman says:
I agree Blog commenting and sharing stories on social networks generate handsome traffic towards a website
  29. Steve Rice says:
Stacy - These are some great suggestions. I have seen great results commenting on others' blogs. I can refine some of these techniques based on your suggestions. Thanks so much for a great article.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Steve, Thank you for your comment, I'm so glad that you found it helpful! Blog commenting really is a great way to go and anything else that you add makes it that much better! Stacy
  30. Golda Smith says:
Hi Stacy, Something else that I'd like to offer is to use social sites like facebook and twitter to create interesting headlines that will draw eyeballs back to your blog. This will require you to pay attention and speak your clients ideal language. How do you know what their ideal language is? Hang out where they hang out and lean in to their conversations. They're all over facebook and they are speaking. If we are paying attention then we have all the information needed to create relevant content. Golda
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Golda, That is a great point, knowing how to create appealing headlines is crucial for social media as well as the commentluv too! Thanks, Stacy
  31. Leanne Chesser says:
Stacy, you've provided a great list of free traffic generation methods. I use them all. I would add creating your own groups in social media (e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn). They're a great way to establish credibility, build a following and get more targeted traffic to your blog.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Leanne, Those are great ideas! Thank you so much for sharing them, I am going put those onto my to-do list! Stacy
  32. Lisa R says:
Although I've blogged off and on for several years, my latest venture is the first time I'm starting out with the intention of building and sustaining a community. I have to say that joining a tribe has helped me immensely - and we haven't even launched yet! Also, as a Wordpress evangelist - I totally second All in One SEO as a great, easy-to-use plugin for beginners. Thanks for the great info Stacy!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Lisa, It sounds like you are off on the right foot! Congratulations! Stacy
  33. Tammy Matthews says:
For so long I couldn't understand why I was getting no traffic on my blog. It has taken me some time, but thanks to wonderful bloggers like you and wonderful tribes, I now understand it! And it's free!!! Great article, Tammy
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Tammy, It really is amazing how much is available that is free! It's just a matter of learning what is out there. When I first got started I only heard about the paid stuff - from people hoping I would buy from them. It was exciting to learn that it could be done for free! Thanks, STacy
  34. Joe Young says:
Hi Stacy, I like the ebooks promotional idea. Not sure many are taking advantage of it. I will. Just goes to show there are so many great ways to generate traffic for free, as long as you are willing to put in a little effort. thanks for sharing. Joe
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Joe, Thank you for your comment, it's a great way to bring in traffic. Though now that I changed my permalink structure I will need to go back and fix the links in my ebooks! Stacy
  35. Replica Watches says:
Stacy, I agree with you but I would also like to know how we can get more traffic generation blog except commenting. Sean
    • Stacy Claflin says:
The whole post is about other ways to generate more traffic, blog commenting is only one part that I discussed.
  36. Chi Pritchard says:
I know that adding links to other blog postings has generated lots of extra hits to my site. Facebook has probably been the greatest source for hits.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Facebook has been my greatest source lately too! Of course one of my tribes is on facebook and I've been getting a lot of FB shares from other great bloggers.
  37. R.O.M.E.L.O. says:
True, you don't have to spend a dime to get traffic but you do need to spend lots and lots of time with it. I'm surprised that blog carnival wasn't mentioned. It's a good source of traffic and backlinks as well.
  38. Maria Pavel says:
Blog commenting can be a great way to bring traffic, but i don't find it as effective as social networking. Plus it's a lot more work and it takes time to keep in touch. Even though social networking also takes time to build, its effects last longer. Once you have your friends on facebook, all thats left is post content for them to see. There are also some good free traffic generation tools worth to try, they speed up the process considerably.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Maria, Social networking is a great way to bring in traffic too! I have found recently that the majority of my incoming traffic is from facebook - so I know that it's effective. I also get a good amount from twitter. Though most of the people that I network with on social media are people that I've met through blogging! :) Thanks for sharing, Stacy
  39. Frances Vanderyacht says:
Thanks for a great helpful article, Stacy. A lot of ideas there that I know I need to do, just need to have the time to do it. I guess I could start with checking my Alexa account. Thanks for the reminder.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Frances, Thank you for your comment, I'm glad that I was able to give you ideas! There are many free options, some of them very creative. I could not even list all of them in one post! Stacy
  40. Tisha says:
Hi Stacy, As I was reading your post, I was surprised at how ways there actually are to gain traffic to your blog for free. So, we don't have to pay a dime to generate traffic which is great. The sites I have not joined yet are the contest sites. Great post Stacy! Cheers! ~Tisha
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Tisha, It really is amazing how many different free options there are to choose from! We can do really well with a few solid free methods! Thank you, Stacy
  41. Golda Smith says:
Hi Stacy, Excellent article with fabulous advice. It can be very intimidating especially when you are a new blogger, to know which route to take to get traffic. I prefer to grow organically because when I started I was boot strapping it and couldn't afford to pay for traffic. Besides, I only want people who want to read my content without feeling like I had to pay for them to visit. Some other methods that I've used was to host a free weekly tele-conference as well as an ezine that I publish 2x/week. Both free and great at generating traffic. Until next time... Golda
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Golda, Those are both great ideas, thank you for sharing! It is amazing how many ideas there are for free traffic generation. Just yesterday I saw another blogger had created a quiz and had links to her posts within the quiz answers! Stacy
  42. George Katsoudas says:
Paid methods cost money, but free methods cost time. I think balance is where it's at :-) I like using both.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
George, Balance is always good! Though for some bloggers paying isn't an option unfortunately, though hopefully through using the free methods they will soon be able to afford the paid ones! Stacy
  43. Heather says:
Stacy, I'm going to start employing these strategies this week on my blog. I would like to see how much I can grow my blog using free methods in the next two months! Thanks for all of the tips.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Heather, I would love to know the differences between now and then. A great way to find out for sure is to take a screen shot of your stats at each point. Stacy
  44. Goran says:
I think the best method to bring traffic to your blog is to be a good writer and be able to keep people interested in your blog. SEO and everything that you mentioned is very true but if you can't keep people interested in your blog they will not be coming back.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Goran, Yes, writing well is very important. "Content is King" as they say but we do need the traffic to get people there in the first place. Then our content is what keeps them coming back! :) Stacy
  45. Mani Viswanathan says:
I will read more into creating an ebook to drive some traffic. Thanks for mentioning it along with the other tips Stacy.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Mani, An ebook is a great way to drive traffic! Stacy
  46. Dennis Edell says:
I am outsourcing SEO because somethings I will never get. I will outsource Facebook work because frankly I couldn't be bothered. I definitely stand behind your free list however, at least a majority of it, especially blog commenting.....my #1 source of traffic for years, and forum marketing, which was my very first foray into the online marketing world many moons ago. ;-)
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Dennis, Yes, in some cases people find it more efficient to pay for some traffic generating services. It works for some people and I'm glad that you found something that works for you. Thank you for sharing which free methods work best for you! Stacy
      • Dennis Edell says:
I always advise free first and pay only when necessary. SEO and me is oil and water. I get the basics (truth be told it's all you really need lol) but specific terminology and the mathematics - under 300 over 1000 blah blah blah drives me nuts, I just don't get it. Design work - hell, I can't even color within the lines, LOL! In a perfect world, I'd outsource all promotion too and just write.....shootin' for it. ;-)
  47. Jon says:
Stacy, Great work! SEO is key but mixing it up in forums and building your authority there can definitely become a solid traffic source. Guest posting is a fantastic way to borrow other people's authority and I know I plan to do more of it. I also agree it's very important to leave thoughtful feedback and add to the conversation wherever you go. The more you give to other communities and stop doing things strictly for backlinks the more you're rewarded. Congrats on your traffic-generating guest post here, Stacy :) Jon
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Thank you, Jon! I appreciate you sharing your experience and thoughts on the topic. I agree that giving to communities is more rewarding than just going for the backlinks. Stacy
  48. Dimitry says:
Hi Stacy, Well, you are right. All these methods are free. But it also is time consuming (24/365) and we don't have a choice. It is not easy to generate a good traffic within a few weeks. Sometimes it's takes a years of hard working to establish the web site as a expert in the field. Am I right?
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Dimitry, Yes it does take a lot of hard work. That is why it is good to test out the different methods and then discover what works best for you personally. Stacy
  49. Steve says:
Stacy, Some great points. I always try to promote the lead magnet (free report) to people I talk to. I am a firm believer in the fact that you have to give something of quality away to really impress people. Of course I also like to couple this with autoresponder, because I believe in the lists are exceptionally important. Technically you could get autoresponder for free with something like mail chimp, although I still like to recommend aweber, it is one of those things I think is actually worth the expense. thanks for some solid information waste drive free traffic
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Steve, Yes, I agree that an autoresponder is one of the first things that a blogger should pay for when they are ready to begin using paid products. Thanks, Stacy
  50. Extreme John says:
Based on the billion comments here it's safe to say that blog commenting is a huge traffic generator, especially if you get in early. Great post.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Thank you, John. Yes, commenting is huge! Stacy
  51. jilianne says:
Excellent tips Stacey! I would like to add one thing - guest blogging. I think this is the best way to boost traffic to your website/blog especially if you're posting for celebrated person in a particular niche. Very useful, thanks!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Jilianne, Guest blogging is a great way to bring in traffic! Thank you for sharing! Stacy
  52. steven says:
You are giving very helpful and actual tips here, Stacy. If we really want work systematically, these free traffic generators will do their job effectively and save us money, too. I am 100% with guest posting as well as with constructive commenting along with the right use of keywords. It's good to have free traffic, but it's super good to have the right one. Thanks a lot for your tips Stacy.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Steven, Thank you for sharing your experiences with traffic generation. Once we figure out what works best for us using them systematically really is the key. Stacy
  53. Bryan says:
Hey Stacy, Those are very valid points there. In terms of free traffic generation, I would say there are the effective one vs the not so effective ones. Personally for me, forum posting isn't that very good for me in terms of traffic generation except for backlink building. But I do find traffic generation very useful for my more "specific sites", especially smaller niches. Big niches are very competitive. I think it's important to try every known free traffic generation method known to see what really works.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Bryan, I can see that you have spent some time testing out which methods work for you! That is the best way to go, some will work better for some people and other methods will work better for other people! Stacy
  54. Alexis says:
Traffic generation is that ingredient needed by any website to succeed. This being said one should take time to learn what works and what don't to avoid wasting the most valuable asset which is time. You did well listing the most effective Free traffic sources online. I recommend all new starters to follow those as from my experience they work.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Alexis, Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and experiences! Stacy
  55. Mavis Nong says:
Hi Stacy,First of all, congratulations on your first guest post and first contest post! :)Wow, what a great list of free traffic generation methods. I use most of them, however blog commenting and guest posting bring me a lot of traffic - very powerful. Thanks for sharing your insights. Good luck with the contest, Stacy.Mavis
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Mavis, Thank you very much! Good luck to you as well! Stacy
  56. Atulperx says:
Always try to watermark your high quality images and videos. If they are good enough then you can see good traffic from this method too .
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Thank you for sharing that tip!
  57. Marcus Baker says:
What an awesome job you have done here Stacy! I agree that all of the strategies you have listed work well for generating traffic to a blog. What I will say is that it's not in one's best interests to try and use all of them at the same time though as this is just too time consuming. I think it's best to choose a few that appeal to one the most and commit to doing them thoroughly and the results will certainly follow. ~Marcus
    • ZK says:
@ MarcusYou can always outsource these kind of stuff ... but yes you should and you must keep an eye on the quality of their work.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Marcus, I agree completely that nobody should try to implement all of these at the same time! That would be too much! Testing out one at a time is definitely the way to go! Stacy
  58. Gregory McGuire says:
Hi Stacy, Quite simply, this is one of the best traffic generation blog posts I've ever read. I can attest that blog commenting and a free report will bring a lot of targeted traffic to your blog. I've not tried the others yet, but after reading this, I'll definitely be giving those a try as well. Thanks for the solid info, Stacy. Talk soon. Gregory
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Gregory, Thank you very much for the compliment! I would love to hear what you decide to try and how it goes! Stacy
  59. Allie says:
Stacy, First, congrats on your guest post! I am still trying to work up the nerve to do it, lol. Some day...Second, very informative post. You covered a lot! I am astonished by the idea of having to comment on 8-10 posts a day for good social networking to be effective. I don't know if I can keep up with that. But I will definitely work on that as a goal. I always wondered what a good daily commenting amount would be.One more thing I just realized with social networking, when you comment or are engaged somewhere try to stick to your own subject matter. Sure if you comment on a very popular site you will get a lot of traffic from that but the visitors won't stay. This happen to me, now I target better. Unless you just want traffic, then go for it. But then again that's not "social" media. :-)
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Allie, I was intimidated by the thought of guest posting for a while too. Once I decided to do it, it was just a matter of doing it! If 8-10 comments a day is too much then I suggest start small and build up on that. Once you are used to 3 a day (for example) you can add another one until you are used to that. Keep going until you are used to 8+ a day! Stacy
  60. Niclas Johansson says:
Hi Stacy! Thanks for your informative post - I'm particularly keen on entering the whole forum world, and eventually collecting some quality content in an e-book. It strikes me that these are really applicable pointers for building your brand whether it's offline or online, B2B or B2C, content-based or tangible product(s)... really useful advice! Cheers and no fears, Niclas J
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Niclas, Thank you, I'm really glad that you found the information helpful! Good luck! Stacy
  61. Susanna Hess says:
Hi Stacy, You nailed it. Sure we CAN pay for traffic, but it's really not necessary is it. Each of these is a great way to generate traffic, some are less time consuming than others. Some have a bit of a learning curve, but they are all worth at least testing out and seeing what you're comfortable with. Great article! Susanna
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Susanna, Thank you! I agree, testing each one out is the way to go because then you know what you like the best and what is the best fit. Stacy
  62. Mark says:
Hi Stacy, thanks for a great post! These are some really valuable traffic tricks anyone can put into action. Here's one more suggestion for driving traffic to your website, especially if you're trying to establish a niche expertise: You can answer questions on a Q+A service like Quora or AllExperts.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Mark, Thank you for sharing those resources, I have not heard of them! Stacy
  63. Josh Garcia says:
Hey Stacy, You nailed it! Everyone wants to receive free traffic. You put together a great resource for ideas on how to accomplish free traffic generation methods. Have a great day... Josh
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Thank you, Josh! Have a great weekend, Stacy
  64. Anna says:
My only problem with posting comments is that I usually read blogs from my smartphone. Not too easy to post a comment and then I forget when I actually am sitting in front of the computer. Today is one of those rare days where I purposely came to comment after reading your post on my phone. Thanks for the tips! I will definitely make more of an effort to respond to the blogs I follow.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Anna, Thank you for taking the time to comment for me! :) I can relate as sometimes I read blogs on my ipod and it is tricky to reply to comments on there, especially with the autocorrect! It comes up with some very strange corrections. Stacy
  65. Jane says:
Hi Stacey, Wonderful tips, all time hits. Personally for me, guest posting and blog commenting bring me lot of traffic. I too don't believe in paid traffic generation methods. I don't think that the traffic brought for money will stick. Good luck with the contest. Great post. Cheers, Jane.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Jane, Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts! I don't have enough experience with paid methods but it makes sense that paid traffic will not stick. Stacy
  66. Alex says:
You know, Stancy, there was a saying that the best things in life are free (ok, this might not always be right) and in the case of traffic generation, there are. If you pay money to generate traffic, then it's not really genuine traffic generation because you have to pay for it and generation, in my opinion means, actually making traffic from nothing. Anyway, you are right about social networks that can help you get traffic if you know with who and how to interact. Also, forums can be a great traffic source (not only a link building tool, like many are using them) especially if the forums are about the niche your are blogging.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Alex, Thank you for sharing your experiences with traffic generation. Using a forum in your niche can really work well! Stacy
  67. Oliver Tausend says:
Hi Stacy, thanks for sharing your insights. I couldn't agree more that there are plenty of ways to generate free traffic. If people don't care about duplication, they shouldn't worry about these free methods you share. But people who care about duplication in their team, even if they have the money, should stay away from paid methods. Chances are that people who refer to paid methods try to avoid the "hassle" of relationship building. At least, for them it might be a hassle. Take care Oliver
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Oliver, Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I agree that in order for duplication to take place we need to keep with the free traffic generation methods! Stacy
  68. Ian Belanger says:
Hi Stacy, Excellent post on how to create free traffic. I know I have used almost all of the techniques you mentioned here and they all work. I have had the most success with commenting on other popular blogs and joining a blog tribe. These 2 techniques have brought my alexa ranking from over 3,000,000 to under 400,000 in the world, in about a month and a half. That's a huge jump in a short time period, but you must always offer value, if not people will see right through you. Thanks for sharing Stacy and have a great day!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Ian, Those two methods (commenting and joining a tribe) has also significantly improved my Alexa ranking as well. I haven't checked my rank in a while but I'm sure that it's continuing to improve! Stacy
  69. Andrew says:
Nice tips, Stacy. Everyone thinks there's always a silver bullet answer that will get them the traffic overnight. But it's all about patience and building relationships. (Along with some tech things like SEO, but even those take time to show results). My only question to you is about "joining a tribe." Is that a specific site or a general theme? You didn't include any links for it, so I wasn't sure. Thanks!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Andrew, Thank you, you're right there are no easy answers. It takes time and effort - just like anything else worthwhile! There are quite a few tribes being formed and you can find them in many niches. I expanded on the topic in my post The Outstanding Benefits of Joining a Tribe, see my commentluv link below. Stacy
  70. Linda says:
Great tips Stacey. Its always good to have a checklist to run through to make sure you are on track and having walked off the reservation. My hubby is the SEO expert of the family and I am sending him your tip about SEO plugins to make sure we are using them. Many thanks! Linda
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Thank you, Linda! I'm glad that you found this useful! Stacy
  71. Kimberly Gauthier says:
These are fantastic suggestions. I'm happy to say that I've taken advantage of each one. There are so many sites out there that are paid, but offer a free option - it's such a great start. If people are willing to pay for sites/services, I suggest creating a monthly and annual advertising/marketing budget that you're okay with and sticking to it. My photography blog started as hobby and I recently started taking it more seriously this year so my budget is $50/month. There are so many things that you can do for $50. My annual budget is $350 and includes the $50. This is completely manageable on my income and setting a budget keeps me from going nuts, which is easy to do (hey, I'm a photographer, do you know how much gear I have?). Thanks for sharing this great information!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Kimberly, You make a great point about using free options from paid services. That can be a great way to go, there are a lot of benefits with the free options in most cases! Stacy
  72. Murray Lunn says:
Good stuff all around. Forums, btw, are by far one of the least tapped of all of these which is a complete shame because you can find niche forums that have thousands of users. If you created an awesome thread that gets stickied you could be pulling in really great traffic for years on end much like a high rank in search engines but it will be, in essence, more valuable because your'e already within a targeted community.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Murray, That is a great point about how we can pull in traffic for years to come if we have a post stickied! That is a great incentive to use forums. Thank you for sharing! Stacy
  73. Harsh Agrawal says:
Nice tips Stacy and out of all..The one which works the best are: Blog Commenting and Forum posting... I'm not even considering SEO, because that is something which every bloggers need to learn and understand....
    • ZK says:
@ HarshWould love to know your favourite blogs and forums ...
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Harsh, Thank you for sharing your experiences! Stacy
  74. Kim Bernard says:
Stacy- Lots of good information. I'll be writing a blog for a local website called www.saratoga.com with the blog title of The Saratoga Traveler. Hopefully they will help promote my blog but I'll be sure to implement some of these great tips. Especially commenting and responding to comments. Thanks!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Kim, Congratulations, and I'm sure that if you implement these strategies you will gain a lot of traffic! Stacy
  75. Andreas says:
Currently traffic, especially for new blogs, does not come without actively participating in social networks or publishing your articles on niche related blogs that already have a certain reader base. Only after this route is established, new blogs may eventually start to get visitors from search engines, but it may take some time.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Andreas, Yes this is a route to be established first! Once the blog is built up then as you said visitors will start coming from the search engines. That's exciting when that starts to happen! Stacy
  76. The Cubicle Chick says:
Commenting on other blogs is definitely key---it makes total sense too. How do you want comments on your blog but don't leave them on others? I also like the building your own community and the tribe aspect as well. These are great ideas!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Great point about giving first, if we want comments we really need to be commenting for others! Thanks for sharing! Stacy
  77. Andi says:
Great tips that you have put together. So true as well, just takes a little investment in time and effort and you can evolve and innovate your blog without paying a lot of money. Love the DIY approach!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Andi, Thank you for your comment, you're right we can innovate our blog with these methods! Stacy
  78. Stacie says:
These are awesome suggestions and I am actually mentoring some new blogs so will be referring them here to this post!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
      Thank you very much, Stacie!
  79. Jewel says:
Some very useful information - I thought I knew lots about this topic but I've learned a few things here.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
I'm glad to be of assistance! :)
  80. Meg says:
Thanks for a great post Stacy. I think commenting on other blogs would have to be my fav traffic building strategy. Not just because it is effective, but - like you said - it helps build community and its FUN.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Meg, Yes, it is fun because you get to know people and build those connections! Stacy
  81. wasim ismail says:
Your point on Joining Social Networking sites is valuable, as this is something everyone can do easily as you don’t have to write a lot, and its fun at the same time. Something which is recommended for all websites owners.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Yes, even 'brick and mortar' businesses benefit greatly from social media. Anyone trying to promote something will find great benefit from them!
  82. Jitendra Singh says:
These are really very helpful tips in order to generate the blog traffic. Some of them we are using and some of them we are not.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
I hope that you try the new ones, you will find new traffic!
      • Jitendra Singh says:
Yes, i started trying them now :)
  83. Marty says:
Hi Stacy and congratulations! In the last month, I've seen my Alexa ranking go from around 1300000 to 803395!. That is almost cutting it in half. All I have spent is my time. Commenting on other blogs is key to building, but as you say, it has to be quality commenting. I try to be as creative in comments as I am in my own articles written. The most important part is enjoying what we do. Otherwise, it becomes a chore.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Marty, That is a great Alexa change! Great job! Mine improved a lot after I joined a commenting group in January. I need to check my ranking again to see where it is at now. I'm sure that it's only gotten better! You make a great point about enjoying it, or it really will become a chore! Take care, Stacy
  84. kbharath says:
its true that blog commenting and the social networking will definitely drive good amount of traffic. i have seen the results by social bookmarking, when ever i write a post i will just share it on some social networking sites like, facebook, twitter, linkedin and digg and another one is stumbleupon after publishing it on the social networking sites i have seen that my blog receives 100 or more extra unique visitors. and blog commenting is also a best way to build backlinks and generating traffic.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Great point about the backlinks, they are very important! 100+ extra unique visitors is great! That really says a lot about the effectiveness of social media! Thank you for sharing. Stacy
  85. Cosmin Stefan says:
Hello Stacy, I like your ideas, especially the one about giving a free report. :D What I’ve had the best of luck with so far has been Twitter, forums and comments. About comments, I think what very important is consistency. If people will see you active on a lot of blogs, they will get curious as to whom you are and make you a visit. Good luck in the contest! Cosmin.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Cosmin, Great point about the comments being consistent! When people see us all over the place they will naturally be drawn to check out our blog! Thanks, Stacy
  86. Dave Grimes II says:
I must confess... you've used my favorite word in the English language: FREE. Your various methods of self-promotion and traffic generation are all spot-on! Blog commenting has been a huge help to me (I feel weird/ironic mentioning that in this response!) and guest blogging has worked really well also. The next step is to cultivate you email list and use it properly. Our email newsletter returns almost half of our list to our site every other week! Those are big numbers, so this strategy shouldn't be ignored!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Dave, Thanks for pointing out the next step, once you have the traffic you most certainly want to retain it! Thanks, Stacy
  87. ZK says:
Similar to the free report, simply create a list, upload it in your blog and share it in your niche forums, twitter, your facebook fanpage.I am sure you will be able to see the traffic ... because more and more people will share it.
    • ZK says:
Yes one more thing ...You should also try Article directories as well. Be honest and add your good content at there and leave one or two link in Author Box.Google simply love ezine so there will be more chances that your article will rank through ezine and you will get recognition and traffic as well.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
ZK, That's a great idea, thank you for sharing! Stacy
      • ZK says:
You are always welcome Stacy ...Looking forward for your next post ...
  88. semmy says:
Hi Stacy nice article! I love reading your and thanks for sharing your source of free traffic.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
      Thank you, Semmy!
  89. Martin says:
The above points are useful but very time taken process but also the key points for generating traffic. If we only focus on article submission, updating our website regularly and participating in the social media websites, surely we can expect traffic in less efforts.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Martin, I wouldn't expect anyone to try to use all of those methods in one day. It would be unrealistic, each person can find what works for them with the greatest results. Right now the jury is out on article submission because of the new google changes because the article directories now have lower rankings than they did before. Thanks for your comment, Stacy
  90. Jon says:
Excellent resources here, Stacy. It's true, unless you really don't have the time to do the promotion yourself there's not much reason to pay. If you want to speed things along with some paid ads that's up to you; most of us prefer the social avenue. Every community, video, and site is being increasingly interlinked with social platforms. From "voting" and "liking" to retweets and commenting through Facebook on posts it comes down to (as you said) quality content. Offer something WORTH sharing and commenting on and you'll gain traction. Jon
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Jon, Great point about everything being interlinked, they all work together to make the whole stronger. Assuming that we are offering something of value of course! Stacy
  91. Devesh says:
Hi Stacy,Amazing post. These are some of the best traffic generation strategies.Blog commenting and guest posting are the best ways to get quality traffic to your blog and build relationship with blog owner. I've great success with it.These days I'm focusing more on social media sites like Blokube, Twitter & Facebook.Anyways, Thanks for sharing this powerful article. Keep up the good work.~Dev
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Devesh, Thank you very much! All of those sources that you've mentioned are great tools for generating traffic, I've seen the results personally! Take care, Stacy
  92. Jym says:
Great post Stacy.I think you have the free traffic gen methods just about sewn up! There's a few more esoteric tactics you could add in there - RSS submissions, Press releases, Getting listed in blog directories... But Anyone who follows even half the guidelines you've set out will reap the rewards! Great post layout too, very easy to read! Thanks for sharing this post here and all the best, Jym
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Jym, Thank you! Those are great suggestions that you offered, I have never tried a press release but I have heard some great results from them! Stacy
  93. Jayne Kopp says:
Hey Stacy, terrific and informative post. These free methods are excellent, but I have to admit, you need to get up pretty early in the morning to get it all done! I had never, ever in a million years considered Yahoo Answers until someone mentioned it last week. Perhaps I will have to check that out. do you find a thread about your particular field?? I wouldn't have a clue how to use it,,,, so when you get time I'm all ears! Keep up the great work my friend... Jayne
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Jayne, I wouldn't recommend trying all of these in one day! :) I would tackle one at a time and find out which ones work for you the best and make a schedule so that you can use them all over the course of a week or a month. You have given me a great idea for a blog post, I will write one up on using Yahoo Answers! Keep an eye out for that! :) Take care, Stacy
  94. Tran Tinh says:
Viral marketing is among the priority that I target in the near future and YouTube should be the first one. Thanks for great ideas @Stacy :-)
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Tran, Thank you for sharing your experiences! Stacy
  95. Christina says:
Some great ideas, thanks! I need to step up on my commenting on blogs a little more... Maybe I'll devote a day to it each week. (It's so hard with kids to do much on the computer in any given time...) Thanks for sharing in Blog Frog!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Christina, Whatever works best for you, it might become a habit if you work a little time in for commenting each day though. Just something to think about! Stacy
  96. Wendy says:
Love how no money has to actually be spent to get started! Free report was something I had never thought of before so I am not quite sure if I should thank you for putting the bug in my ear or to not thank you for putting the bug in my ear! :) Now you have given me something to think about! Thanks so much!
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Wendy, I encourage you to put together a free report. It really is not as intimidating as it seems. The first one takes the longest because you are figuring out how everything works. Have fun! Stacy
      • Wendy says:
Figuring out how everything works is definitely fun to do! I will put the free report in the back of my brain for a rainy day project! Thank you for responding to my comment too!
  97. Khalid Hosein says:
Hi Stacy - nice article. Can you expand on 'join a tribe'? What's your definition of a tribe, how do you form or join one, pitfalls, etc.?
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Khalid, I have written several posts recently on the topic of tribes on my blog (see the link in my commentluv for this comment for one). A tribe is a group of bloggers who share their blog posts with the other members in exchange for either comments or shares. They are becoming very popular right now, you can find several. To learn about one specifically search my blog for a post called Build Your Blog into a Success. Stacy
  98. Marco Lee says:
I really dig blog commenting. Especially if the blogs have commentluv. Like yours here. The links could bring you more rankings and bring more traffic. (but don't abuse it. 5-1o links could be okay in a day. Am I right? ) Basic SEO is also really a must.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Marco, I have found the commentluv links to be very effective in bringing in traffic. I also know that I have visited a lot of new blogs from the commentluv link that I saw! I would say that 5-10 links a day is great. Stacy
  99. Henway says:
Good article, these are all good tips to bootstrap marketing when you can't afford to spend money initially. And if you own a blog, I'll argue you shouldn't pay to do any marketing in the future either.. not until you got a product or got something to sell.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Henway, You make a great point about not paying for anything until we have something to sell! Thank you for sharing, Stacy
  100. Janet says:
Stacy, aloha. Thx for the great tips you shared with us. In my opinion, blog commenting is a more effective source of traffic that most people realize. Good comments and the responses, help to build a community. As that community grows, your blog grows and spread. In terms of platforms like twitter, facebook and LinkedIn, I find that twitter drives the most traffic to my blog. If I use a catchy headline, it is virtually guaranteed I will have new visitors from twitter. According to recent posts I have read, though I cannot speak from experience, Yahoo! Answers drives a significant amount of traffic to the people who participate. Stacy, thx for the great suggestions. Best of luck with the blogging contest. Aloha. Janet
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Janet, Twitter is indeed a great way to bring in traffic. I use the "tweet old post" plugin which (as you can guess) automatically tweets old posts for me. Often I get comments from old posts and nearly every time it's from being tweeted by the plugin! Stacy
  101. Jay Philips says:
Wonderful tips. People don't need to pay large amounts of cash now a days to be found. Write great content, post it on the social networks, provide feedback to others. Traffic will steadily increase as long as you keep up the quality on your site.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Jay, You make a great point about great content, without it the traffic that we bring in will not stick around! Stacy
  102. Natalie A. says:
What a great list,Stacey! Thanks you so much for sharing with us. I am just down getting into generating traffic to my site. I have found that commenting works the best for me which still baffles me...lol! Next on my list is guest blogging and video. Thanks again for the great list!Natalie
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Natalie, Thank you for your comment. The more methods of traffic generation that you use the more you will see your blog grow! Stacy
  103. Wayne says:
Hi Stacey. You have some great ideas for generating traffic. Right now my blogs and website are sitting dormant.......I'm busy with other aspects of my life .........work and toastmasters. I do plan on developing my web presence in the future.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Wayne, Thank you! I'm sure that as a result of developing other areas of your life you will find they will help you to be a better blogger as well when you pick up again. Stacy
  104. Max Bronson says:
Hi, Stacy. I think the tips you give here are pretty spot on. The one tip, I think that may not be quite so spot on is the leaving of comments. In my experience, up until about a year ago, this was truly an awesome way to get traffic. However, I've noticed in the past year, it doesn't seem to be as effective. I think comments has another benefit though and that is relationship building. If you're a regular, quality commenter on a blog, you'll soon be able to start up a relationship with that blogger, unless they are a ProBlogger. That's a lot harder to do, but still not impossible. From your relationship with that blogger you may get promoted by him / her in a post, get to cooperate with them on a project.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Max, Thank you for sharing your insights. I agree, one of the greatest benefits of commenting is the relationships. I have found comments to be effective in bringing in traffic personally, when I am not commenting as often I notice a drop in my traffic. Though at the same time as I've been using other traffic generation methods the commenting has less of an impact, so if I don't comment for a couple of days it won't hurt my traffic as much. Perhaps because your blog is more established the commenting is less effective because of other methods you are using. Thanks for sharing how commenting helps with getting promoted by a bigger blogger. I have found that to be true too! Stacy
  105. Michelle Shaeffer says:
These are excellent tips, Stacey. Many newer bloggers do get lost in the process because all the hype is pay per click ads, or it just feels like a confusing maze with so many options. The free strategies you've listed here work great and are my top traffic sources.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Michelle, Thank you for your comment! I like the word that you chose - "hype" because it is so fitting! It can be extremely confusing for a new blogger. Stacy
  106. Diana Simon says:
Hi Stacy, I just wrote about blog commenting and joining challenges to get traffic. I am surprised at how effective it is because as a person who has just started blogging less than a month ago, I have seen amazing results just from joining tribe and blog challenge. I have to start going into forums as well as write guests posts which I believe will be very effective. I am doing very basic SEO with Google Keyword Tools but I haven't looked into it in details. It's just been a month so one step at a time.
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Diana, I have found both commenting and challenges to be excellent sources of traffic, and also great for building relationships. It sounds like you are doing great for just one month! Keep it up! Stacy
  107. MOMmetime says:
thank you so much for sharing this information. I started blogging about six months ago; I had no idea all that is involved. I'm enjoying it and want to continue...gathering information like this is so helpful. I really appreciate the tip on Google Adwords ~I just signed up! Thanks, Amy
    • Stacy Claflin says:
MOMmetime, It's a learning process, I felt pretty overwhelmed by it all when I first started. I learned one thing at a time and have built my blog up over time. It sounds like you are moving in the right direction! Stacy
  108. Mel says:
Great suggestions! I spend a lot of time reading and commenting on blogs. Everyone loves comments (well if they are nice and not spam) so it has been the very best way I've found so far to really market myself and meet new people :) * I have yet to figure out the SEO plugins :) I have alexa and google page rank on the toolbar so I can see how I rank any time. I wish Google would rank my site :) Old site had a 2/10, new site has been around 4 months and no score. Blessings, Mel
    • Stacy Claflin says:
Hi Mel, The SEO takes some time, I still have a lot to learn - but as long as we are learning then we are moving in the right direction! Thank you for sharing, Stacy
