Building Backlinks Should Be Fun Too

March 12, 2012 - Last Modified: February 14, 2013 by Brian

BlogEngage RSS

One of the first questions a prospect asks me is, Brian, are your RSS and Marketing Services good for backlinks? Now, naturally yes our portfolio of social media websites are indexed by Google, most have a Page Rank of 2 and 3 so yes the services will help your backlinks. What I don’t get is why the question of backlinks comes up first?

Why don’t prospects see the true value in joining my blogging community? The value of connecting with thousands of other bloggers? The chance to build online relationships and the chance to share our blog content? It seems the general consensus of what’s most important is building backlinks.

See, I’m a marketer at heart, I graduated with a 3 year business diploma in marketing so I know the importance of building relationships. I also understand the importance of ranking in the search engines. Let’s face it, to rank you need links not relationships.

So what I propose is a combo of both worlds. I propose a way to generate backlinks while still having fun meeting new people and building relationships. Here’s a few ways we can accomplish this as bloggers.

Fun Methods of Backlinking

  • Forum Marketing

I love to help new bloggers in public blog forums. I have all my favorite forums in a bookmark folder so I can open them all in new tabs. I visit blogging forums, social media forums and other forums I have an interest in. I search the new posts and engage in conversation with these forums memebrs. Every time I post I’m gaining some backinks from my signature. Now I know they have little value but remember we’re getting backlinks while still having fun. If you’re lucky you can link to your own blog articles that may answer any forum questions in detail.

  • Blog Commenting

I don’t know about you but I love blog commenting. Now that I’m working on Blog Engage full time I find myself engaging with all our blogging members. I love to read what they have to share and I love commenting even more. When I comment I get to leave a backlink to my site. This is a very high valued link and if we’re lucky the blogger will have comment luck.

  • Blog Directories

Avoid Repetition! I like to warn bloggers to use caution when submitting links into blog directories. It’s great for SEO but it can be very annoying if your spending all day doing it! Take a break and enjoy the forums or blog commenting. If you split this process into a few hours a week it will seem much easier and fun to do.

  • Guest Blogging

Many guest blogging blogs allow you to have a few links in your articles. This is a great way to develop high quality links. In fact this form of backlinking is placed very high on the quality scale with Google and can also bring a lot of fun to your day. Think about how awesome guest blogging is. while gaining quality links you are also building great relationships with the people commenting on your articles.

Discussion and Feedback

I hope you enjoyed my post, I think if you follow some of these steps you will find the important of building relationship can be just as important as building backlinks. When done right they make an excellent combo. I’m open to your thoughts and would love to hear your feedback. Please post a comment below!

  2. Thomas Brewer says:
Awesome article. I am doing quite a bit of research in recreating my link profile and social visibility. Thank you for the information. All of this is a little overwhelming and new for me.
  3. Jacko says:
Good point Brian. I haven't seen this said before but it is true. Hard work doesn't have to be painful. There are better ways to do everything. This post is a good reminder, thanks.
  4. Charles Daniels says:
I'm with you on enjoying blog commenting to build both links and relationships. It's great because you're amassing that ever precious link juice, but also getting an opportunity to read and learn interesting stuff that's pertinent to your field while doing so. How can you beat that?
  5. Sara says:
In every business the public relations are necessary, and online business can't be an exception. In general I don't participate in forums, because I'm a new blogger, but I would like to start.Commenting on posts is something new for me, as I started a while ago, but I'm finding it really fun and interesting because I have learned so many things about SEO, blogging strategies, how to generate traffic to my blog, ect,.Back links are of course really essential but without useful information you can't go any further.
  6. Don says:
Great article. There are many ways to build backlinks, you've only covered a few of the main ones but it was a good article. Backlinking can be a very boring mundane process lol
  7. Kimberly Gauthier says:
I'm a huge fan of forums and enjoy connecting with new people. I think the discussions are fun and I learn a lot from people in those forums. Recently I found out that someone in a photography forum follows two of my blogs and I was amazed. It was a great surprise and showed me that I wasn't wasting time in those forums. The fact that it's fun, a learning opportunity, and a great way to connect with people for various reasons makes forums a good use of my time. Kimberly
    • bbrian017 says:
that's funny Kim, it's ironic how life works, sometimes what we are looking for is right under our own nose. I also enjoy forms, in fact I'm still trying to keep up with the Blog Engage forums. So many things to do, so little time.
  8. Wayne B says:
Yup....backlinks are vital ...they are like votes in an election. More votes mean more recognition. I started 2 blogs in Feb 2012, and even though I'm young in the blogging arena, I've always known that backlinking is a BIG DEAL. I've decided to build my backlinks manually ...though....not using any automated tool :D
    • bbrian017 says:
Automated tools are better than manual blinding but ti has to be a perfect system and I can honestly say I've only seen one online that will do it right without putting you in deep trouble with Google.
  9. Mani Viswanathan says:
Backlink building via forums can prove very useful at times specially after one has made a mark in that forum as a reputed user or helper.
  10. Chloe says:
Hi Brian, thank you for the post. I personally struggle when it comes to using forums to create backlinks- I think I must be looking in the wrong place or my particular field is hard to engage with. But guest blogging has been really beneficial for me- and I enjoy sharing my knowledge!
  11. DenverSid says:
i agree if work isn't fun don't do it because you will just be frustrated! Link building isn't different and once you start loving the job you notice that you spend less energy and achieve greater results!
  12. Jason says:
Nice tips, I find both blog commenting and forum marketing quite fun, however I'm not sure of their value regarding link building and SEO. I do also try to do quite a lot of article marketing... guest blogging can also be fun, but only if my post is approved!
  13. Ezra says:
Backlinking gives good sites the rankings they deserve quicker.Backlinking is super important to the whole SEO process, but it’s only a medium sized part. You need backlinking, but unless you’ve chosen the right keywords and built your sites the right way, you are going to struggle to make any money or get any rankings no matter what backlinking strategy you use.Without the right combination of backlinks, you won’t see a massive ranking improvement at all. That’s why backlinking needs to be done in a systematic way. The key is really building that foundation first then hitting the High PR links, Google just loves this and even for the most competitive keywords you’ll rank high on the first page quickly.
  14. Abe says:
I have to agree it should not always be about back links. It is important that as we go along in building our links, we are also building and establishing a working relationship which will keep our network active and generate more friends that we can share our product/s with.
  15. Joe Elliott says:
Great post, Your tips I don't think are just beneficial for backlinking but is great to get ideas about posts, and building a reputation because you are engaging with people that matter. Thanks Joe
  16. Nishadha says:
It should be fun and for most SEO people it is fun. But I'm sure most people don't see any fun in it. Of all the methods mentioned above "commenting" is my favorite method.
    • bbrian017 says:
Hi Nishadha nice seeing you, man it's been a while. I know a few SEO people and they work so hard but they love it. it's unreal in fact!
  17. sam says:
ya you are absolutely right buinding backlinks should be taken as fun bt some times when our comments are not approved , i really get frustrated....
  18. Stephen Jeske says:
Brian, when you look at it this way, it's more about engaging with real people instead of building links. Communicating with people is inherently enjoyable, unless your a recluse. Building links is very much a mechanized approach and is highly repetitive and task oriented. Developing a network of connections takes time, but is time well spent. And if it's enjoyable, then time really doesn't matter that much does it?
    • bbrian017 says:
Your right, and the greatest part is when we do it this way, it also allows us to get the backlinks we all so need. so what happens is it becomes fun and the backlinks just naturally follow. thanks for the feedback and input.
  19. Bishwajeet says:
Create a free plugin or free wordpress theme and then watch your backlinks increase, simple.
  20. Trung Nguyen says:
I total agree with you about all of the point you listed in this post, Brian. And I think guest blogging can be the best powerful way to buiding backlinks for the blog. You know, I'm waiting to get your guest post, Brian, you are a awesome guest blogger I know.
  21. Joshua says:
Blog commenting is the most effective way I would say. Also it is fair if you react to the information given in the article, discuss meaningfully with other people and don't spam here and there with random "Wow what a nice article" :)
  22. DiTesco says:
Hi Brian. Sadly most of the time, people tend to see what kind of benefits (SEO wise) will they get if they join a network or community, rather than the value of building true relationships and in particular with like minded people. unfortunately, not all of them are interested in that so they just want to see if they will get backlinks and whether or not those backlinks can be of value. Otherwise, they will just move on the next.
  23. Al Sefati says:
I still like linkbait the best. It just works. (oh yah I also like link buying ;0 )
  24. Gaurang says:
Ya I agree to your title. We should take it as a fun , rather than just focus on increasing its amount by spamming and other stuffs. Blog Commenting and Guest posting is the best way to build backlinks authentically.
    • bbrian017 says:
The way I see it, if it's all about business and no fun, why bother doing it? This is the main reason I started working full time online, because it's fun and I love it.
  25. Morgan says:
Hey Brian! I love these tips, but I do wish you could have given us some of your favorite places to comment or which directories to submit our blog to or even your favorite forums, just as examples for those who might not be aware. :) I love these methods, though! It's real important to keep it simple and don't overload your plate with too many blogs or too many forums to comment on, especially if your plate is already full. Find your favorite few and then go at them with all your might, until you can grow your forums or blogs later on. Thanks for the post!
    • bbrian017 says:
Hi Morgan, perhaps in my next guest post I will name some of the communities I spend most my time in. These days I've been spending most my time in Blog Engage just trying to keep up what's going on there lol. If your looking for blogs to comment on well you know Blog Engage has the best of them. Also it's easy to use our categories and separate the article into area's you have the most interest in. This is how I do it based on what mood I'm in lol.
      • Morgan says:
I got my system down pretty solid, but was more referring for others. :) Just a suggestion, I do like the overall article. Cheers!
