A Blogger’s Personality – 3 Personality Traits you Need to Succeed

August 21, 2010 - Last Modified: August 21, 2010 by Mark 2,025

Blogger's Personality

A Blogger’s Personality – 3 Personality Traits you Need to Succeed Throughout the internet there are an abundance of resources which provide information on blogging.

They all provide the usual content:  guides on installing and tuning wordpress, selection of a webhost, and some brief overview of search engine optimisation.  The majority of readers find these resources because they have heard there is money to be made online through personal websites and blogs.  Everyone who has ever done these courses follows it religiously, usually because of the promise of it meaning you make money – easy money.  But sooner or later you realise that there is something missing.  The magical golden nugget of valuable information which you feel you have missed on your training course.  You’re pulling your hair out wondering what it is.

As with many things in life, the answers to many of our everyday problems are staring us in the face.  The secret, or golden nugget, of blogging success is no different.  In fact, the three personality traits I am about to discuss can be related in many walks of life.  I use them on a daily basis to help with my career.  So what are they?

Determination

This is without doubt one of the most important attributes you should have. Without determination, you will find it difficult, if not impossible, to work through the turbulent times of your adventure.  Determination is something that you can teach yourself with plenty of effort – but it’s not easy.  The irony here is you must be determined to be determined. Each and every one of us has determination in us.  If we didn’t we’d sit at home and do literally nothing all day.  We all have hopes and dreams in life.  Some of us want a nice big house with a cool car, some of us want a family and financial security.  Regardless, the only thing that ever really holds us back is our own determination.  You hear excuses all the time – “I can’t afford that”, etc etc – But the reality is, if you are truly determined to do something, you find a way to do it

Personable

Anyone I have ever met who has had any form of success has an addictive form of personality. They are friendly, sociable people, who know how to network.  This is a core fundamental to success – as great as being knowledgible is important, part of the formula is made up of WHO you know.

You can get to know anyone with the right contacts.  But the important way to get those contacts is to network.  This is made easy by being an approachable person.  Say for example, you are at a conference, and you want to introduce yourself to one of the speakers.  You are not going to do yourself any favours by saying – I don’t agree with that point you made.  Something as sharp as that isn’t going to get you anywhere.  I’ve found situations like this are often best approached with a calm persona.  State you have a query about something they discussed, and suggest discussing it further somewhere more private.

This first contact is very important, so it is key that you get it right.

Passion

The final personality trait – passion is not necessarily going to guarantee you succeed, however it makes life a lot easier for you. You can challenge yourself to do anything, you want.  Even subjects you’re not interested in.

I’m not a big fan of history, for example – being more of an engineer myself.  But I’m intrigued by it, and know that because I am passionate about succeeding at anything I put my mind to, I could go places – but it will be difficult, because it’s not a natural interest.  On the other hand, I love making websites (coding). I find it relaxing because I don’t have to think much about it.  If I sought out a project to undertake doing this, my passion is much more likely to carry me through the tough times, because I’ve a natural interest.

Do you have these traits in your personality?

When you have been embarking upon your adventures, have you found yourself recognising these traits in yourself?

Passion is most important for a blogger. You cannot hope to succeed with enthusiasm and zeal. You need to love what you do and write.
  2. Darren Scott Monroe says:
Another great article. One thing I would add is the importance of emotion. Not just passionate about your niche but express anger when something upsets you (though be professional about it). Express concern when something unethical happens, express love when someone needs it i.e. another fellow blogger.
  3. Cole Stan says:
If you love what you're doing, everything will be very easy for you to achieve. You just need to let out your ideas. Also, your determination towards working for your passion is needed especially if you're getting negative result from what you're doing.
  4. bbrian017 says:
Hi mark, I think ti's funny that everything you need to become a successful blogger you need to be successful in life as well. Actually these are traits to pretty much being a decent human being. I like the article and so did the members at blog engage your 3rd in this weeks top engaged @blog engage congrats!
  5. Joy says:
That is a fine list however, I tend to think that you would need to have a pretty thick skin as well. People tend to be a lot more critical on the net then they would face to face. Everyone is a tough guy when behind their computer.
    • Mark says:
Hi Joy, This is a very good point you have made. I guess that is something I should have included. Whilst determination and passion can help through the critique, it really does take a particular mentality to brush it off and not get offended or hurt.
  6. Jamian says:
Consistency can play big part as well, successful bloggers they stick to one frequency and keep it that way.
    • Mark says:
That's true. Consistency is equally as important to the author as the reader. I've found with there being so many blogs worth reading, if I know one updates on a particular day or two through the week, my life is made easier. I'm sure it's the same for the author to manage their time.
  7. Felicia says:
Determination and passion are always the main traits a typical blogger must have. In terms of personality, I agree with you that people who are friendly, down to earth and have the knack for opening up interesting (even if not very important) topics are those who can extend to many people effortlessly, just because they are approachable and friendly.
    • Mark says:
Hey Felicia, Thanks for your comment. I like how you have pointed out down-to-earth people. I think this is particularly important because someone who is humble about their work and willing to share is going to go a lot further than someone with an ego to feed.
  8. Joni says:
Hello Mark. This should be read by every aspiring blogger out there before they jump into the blogging bandwagon. Its undoubted that there are people who are interested / have started blogging merely because of hearing the fact that blogging could be profitable and not for what it is originally intended for: Expression.
    • Mark says:
Thank you for your awesome comment. It's true that too many people start simply for the money benefit - but they soon realise it's not easy. I guess this reason for so many startups is ultimately why there are so many failures too.
  9. James King says:
Hi Mark, Passion and determination are important. This is a question for all the bloggers here, do you guys feel that the blogging niche is getting too competitive, enough though, WordPress blogs are being produced at a rate 12,000 blog per day? I've been around the block a few times. Hesham will back me up on this on. I've seen Blogriffic go, I've seen Nicholas Prudhon go, these were all up and coming bloggers in 2009, I must admit, I left blogging in 2009, for six months to reinvest myself. Now as "betterstartblogging.com", the point is, people will either "burn-out", "lose hope" or "quit", if there is not any reward for what they are doing. So of the biggest rewards are: learning new skills such as: SEO; link building, link baiting, PPC, networking and these alone are marketing skills, that can applied to develop traffic and a readership.
    • Mark says:
I don't think blogging is becoming too competitive. Saturated maybe. Amongst the many great sites, there are a lot of really poor ones which don't offer anything new. They just repeat what is known without any sort of alternative view. I do agree, plenty will quit when they don't make any gains. This is why the personality traits are particularly important.
  10. Jay says:
Hi Mark, I think I'm your newest visitor for today :) .. Famousbloggers was referred by my friend and I think he was right when he said that he learned so many things from you guys about how to improve himself as a blogger. You're right passion should be one of the top three traits every blogger should posses to become successful! Thanks for sharing.
    • Mark says:
Hi Jay, Thank you for those kind words - though I cannot take credit for his fantastic blog. This is a great site brought to you by Hesham and his team - check out the about page at the top.
  11. Tinh says:
Number #1 and #3 are great! I am a little bit curious about the #2?
    • Mark says:
Hey Tinh, With the second point, I was trying to convey how important your personality is to being successful. I find that anyone who has made it, so to speak, has a personality type which is approachable and non-threatening. If you make yourself accessible to your readers and engage with them, then they will more than likely follow you more closely because you have proven yourself approachable. Being friendly is also going to help a ton when networking with people. Ultimately it is networking with others that helps build your following and can help you succeed.
  12. Nabeel says:
Hi, Great 3 personality traits to have. I think all three are important, but having the correct mindset is also important. This would overlap with determination and patience, as these are practically what comes under the correct mindset. Kindest, Nabeel
    • Mark says:
Hey Nabeel Thanks for your comment. I think what you have said is right on the money - there are so many traits which are desirable/necessary which are all closely inter-related. They all ultimately results in the correct mindset :)
  13. Raj says:
Nice Article:) You are right! How about Hard Work? Will this add or make difference?
  14. tushar says:
i think you missed perseverance.... although all these things are inter related, you can still mention them as every blogger needs to face this in his initial days
    • Mark says:
I see where you are coming from. Perseverance is vital to getting through the tough times. I personally see perseverance as being the a form of determination which is driven by passion for something you thoroughly enjoy doing.
  15. Jakes says:
Hi Mark, Good points here... Its not that these traits are necessary for a blogger, but they are necessary if one want to be a 'successful blogger'. The funny thing is that these things are closely related. I mean if you are determined, the other two traits will gradually evolve in you.. And the other way round too :-)
    • Mark says:
Now you mention it, you are very right about the traits lending themselves to each other. Passion and personality shine through very naturally, similarly, determination shines through in others who may be more introverted but equally passionate. When you have founded one of the traits, the others slowly click into place. Thanks Jakes!
  16. Willy says:
Few traits of a successful blogger that I would like to add here is on the attitude that is about "work hard and work smart". How about quality time management, this is equally important as well.
    • Mark says:
The two traits you mention certainly are requirements of work ethic. Procrastination is a big killer for many of the things we embark upon - so working efficiently is critical. I guess you could link these to the personality trait of determination - you try not to get side-lined by the goings-on around you so you can get to your goal.
  17. abhishek says:
What i would like to add here is that the second point determination is the most biggest factor. Once you start a blog and for the first 10 days people are very passionate as well as determined but after the 11th day when they say little traffic and virtually no comments the determination seems to go away. If at all we are determined that no matter what we will be blogging for 1 year with all the passion and skill we got as well as we will also be doing some good SEO i don't see any reason why a blog can't succeed.
    • Mark says:
This is a very true point. The first few months are often very slow for a blog unless you are doing a serious amount of marketing and seo wizardry. Determination can help you pull through those times.
  18. Paul L'Acosta says:
Excellent insights and comments here Mark. That's why I agree to disagree with some social media "icons" out there saying that "anyone can be a blogger". True, anyone can open a blog account and by that be called a blogger, but not everyone can be successful at it. ~Paul
    • Mark says:
Hey Paul, I'm with you on this one. Anyone with an email address and internet access can set up a blog and be a "blogger". But it really takes a particularly type of person to be good at it. I sometimes get frustrated because it's not difficult to blog about a topic. The challenge is learning about yourself, and pushing yourself.
  19. Dennis Edell says:
I have all three in abundance, as do most that I know in this business. sometimes though, outside forces can still seep in and sideline you before you realize it.....
    • Mark says:
Hey Dennis, I can totally relate to what you mean by outside forces seeping in. I'm nearing completion of my PhD research, and when I look back I realise how often outside things affected my working. I think determination can help with this though. That coupled with a good plan of what you want to achieve and how can only help. The hardest part I guess with outside influences, is that at the core of everything, we are still people with powerful emotions, and occasionally there are things we just cannot plan for or get around.
  20. Alex says:
There are hundreds of traits required to be successful, but I have to admit Mark that you have done a bang up job of pointing out the three that are the most important. Without these three traits making up the foundation of your drive, then no matter how positive you are - you will get nowhere fast. Great read mate, Really loving your Stuff Mark, so it was quite a pleasure to find you over here at Famous Bloggers :)
    • Mark says:
Hey mate, I'm honoured to be your first comment here :p There are tons of traits as you say. Even at that, you can sub-divide the ones I've listed for days.
    • Colleen says:
I agree. Essentially, a solid discipline in a blogger's character is a must. My takeaway from Mark's post. ;)
      • Mark says:
Hey Colleen, You've summed this up brilliantly - discipline is the key!
  21. Ileane says:
Hey Mark, I think these are important factors and for me the passion is what makes me so determined. I find that the friendships that I've developed online have kept me motivated. I'm constantly learning too. Thanks.
    • Mark says:
Hey Ileane Hope you're keeping well! I agree 110% about the friendships being very motivational. I've formed some good relationships with some readers too. I think it's particularly useful because you are surrounding yourself with people who are, a - interested in what you have to say b - enthusiastic c - motivating
  22. noaspa says:
Hi Mark, The things you mention are definitely pre-requisites to any sort of success - but for real long-term success they need to be accompanied by a genuine friendliness & openness in my opinion. Best wishes from Hamburg Will
    • Mark says:
Hey Will, I agree completely. Even if you have a sociable personality, whether you are genuine or fake will eventually show through. I think openness is particularly important too - it helps reassure people that you have nothing to hide. I can recall a tweet from a popular blogger recently that if they were to run for a political seat, they wouldn't need to worry because they are honest from the start about their affiliates.
    • Kissie says:
Ditto. However, I think it would be difficult being personable and not friendly. Thanks for sharing this post, Will. ;-)
      • Mark says:
I'm guessing what Will is getting at is that anyone can be friendly, but it's genuine friendliness that really matters. Please correct me if I'm wrong :)
        • noaspa says:
Hi Mark, Sorry, yes, that's exactly what I meant Cheers Will
  23. The Bad Blogger says:
Well, I have one more to add and that is "mindset." Just imagine having a bad mindset and you are determined to be successful, in the end you become successful in becoming a bad ass, another way is having a good mindset, in the end you become successful in becoming a good guy. To me, most people failed not because they lack of determination, but lack of a better mindset as in "what I should do next." Most people stack in certain point such as failure, technical problem and etc... etc... etc... well, when they are stuck, their mind will start to think and if their mindset is no better then laziness will conquer.
    • Mark says:
This is a very good point. Your mind set is something which will ultimately determine your work ethic. As you say, a bad mindset will lead to laziness, and a good mindset will lead to something a lot better
