Old is Gold But in Blogging New is Diamond

December 10, 2010 - Last Modified: March 28, 2013 by Jeevan Jacob John 1,831

Old is Gold

This post focuses on answering two questions : Is writing old content better than writing a well flourished idea ?  or Is writing new content better than writing a well flourished idea ? This post is inspired by a comment made by The Bad Blogger on my last Post – Are you using Your Brain in Blogging ? Thanks to Bad Blogger for the inspiration. Here is the comment –

“… creating new content is good but you also must think the newly created fresh content is it useful or not… you see, I rather write something that’s been done with success then writing something that I think can be success, and I rather let the big guys spend their money on research of freshly new content… and I use them to modify to better understanding for others…
It’s all about leveraging other people’s mind and use it for your own good…. remember this… It’s hard to blaze a new trail when the road has already been paved !”

What I understand from this comment is that he prefers writing well written idea. So my question is “Is writing an old idea better than writing a new idea ?”

My reply to the comment was :

“I don’t know about that because when you write about something that people has already written about, you will receive fewer comments, retweets etc. When you write about something new, you will get newer ideas (due to the comments, discussion etc.). People will notice you. It may not be a success but at least you created a new idea. I would much rather write about a new idea rather than an old one. Anyway, Its your opinion.”

My Opinion – Why Writing New Idea is Better than writing old idea

hummer old tires

I think writing about a new idea is better than writing an old idea. Nowadays, I see a lot of bloggers writing about the same old thing again and again. I am not saying that one should not write about it, rather one should also try to add some new tip (something extra) to the idea. Let me tell you what I see in the blogosphere :

1) Quality Content (Quality over Quantity)

2) Social Media (Promotion/Networking/Twitter & FB – Twitter lists, more twitter followers, FB fan page)

3) Commenting (How to get more comments/positive replies etc./Commentluv)

4) SEO, Design, Money Making tips (earn more), blogging mistakes, why you are wrong posts (why you are not getting any comments, why you suck at blogging etc.)

If you look at today’s blogs, these are the most prevalent topics. I am saying that you shouldn’t post about these topics. You can but try to add new information or a new idea. Really, I hate reading posts that I have already read a thousand times.

Let me tell you why you should write new content. By writing about a new idea,

  1. You are introducing a new idea to the public, to the world (yes, of course)
  2. You will increase your reputation (you may, depends upon the idea – whether your idea is worth reading. You will get more comments/retweets/traffic etc. if your idea is a good one.

You may taste failure while writing a new idea, but take it easy. Failures are stepping stones to success. Your failure is your guide. You may receive 30+ comments and 70+ re tweets for writing an old idea, but it won’t help you to build your reputation. Writing old idea over and over will cost you, now if not in the future.

Tell me, would you want to read something that you have read in hundreds of blogs ?

No, I don’t think so. You would want to read something new, something refreshing, some unique, something that can spark a bunch of new ideas. If you are able to come up with a new idea, well then you deserve the status of a Pro Blogger. I believe that a successful blogger is defined by the terms of his ability to create unique ideas. Innovation matters, Imitation sucks. Imitation is common but Innovation is unique. All of the bloggers today have the ability to create unique content ; The only difference is that we only use the ability differently in different amounts. Smart bloggers use the ability to their fullest potential. Are you a smart blogger ?

Old is Gold But New is Diamond!

gold vs diamond

Above all, Writing a new idea gives me more satisfaction than writing an old post. I would rather spend more time writing about a new idea. Sure, I agree that I do it – I would write old stuff, but I try to add something more, something extra, something on my own to the post.

Have you heard of the quote – “Old is Gold“. It is, but in blogging – “New is diamond“. Diamond is surely worth more compared to gold. In a blogging sense, the new idea is worth more than the old stuff.

New ideas = more new ideas = more and more new ideas. So when you write about a new idea, you get tens of other ideas to write about. Would want to write about a new idea ?

I would like to hear from you. This, I think, should be an important thing to bloggers. This should be like a controversial issue among bloggers. How can we answer this question ? To solve this problem, I (I mean we) need feedback ; I need your opinion. So, What is your opinion about writing the old content again and again?

Is writing new content better ? Coming up with the title of this post was hard for me! I’ve tried my best to come up with a new title) – I changed it again and again – I wanted to stay with a question since I have observed that interrogative titles earn more traffic.

Great article, Jeevan. you are going to be a great writer and a great blogger. I can see it. I own a couple of article directories and half of the articles I receive are not half as good as yours. You are absolutely correct, by the way. Writing about new and exciting events and concepts is what blogging is all about. Just remember...new + news = link bait...:) Mark
  2. Jenn says:
I think a lot of people write about old ideas because new ideas are pretty hard to come by. There are not many truly creative and innovative people in the world. Plus, you can only come up with so many completely fresh, brand new ideas. If you're going to have a blog based on new ideas, you really better be a complete genius who can dream something new up every single day. Otherwise, you're just going to have to discuss the same old ideas floating around out there, otherwise you'll have no content on your blog.
  3. Pete Carr says:
Hi Jeevan, New, fresh content will certainly catapult your status. But, how many bloggers actually experiment with new ideas, they do tend to follow the same track. I don't know whether it is because they have no ideas of their own or that they just follow a set path so to speak. There is so much of the same information out there that it carries weight. If all these bloggers are talking about it then it must be right.(not my opinion). A good way to get fresh unique content is to do what you have done here and answer a question. Put your unique angle to it and ask for responses. Should whip up a frenzy. Also be your self, don't try to emulate other bloggers. There is space for everyone. Pete
  4. Claire says:
Nice analogy. And definitely true. A unique & fresh content is something more precious & has more value than old/recycled topics.
  5. Pankaj Gupta says:
This concept will only help to those websites that are popular. For less popular sites this concept will not work. They have to stick on writing old concept with innovative way. If they will share new ideas then when the visitors will come to know about it , it will become old idea. So, It also depends on the site ranking and how many visitors you are getting daily globally..
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I don't really agree with that (Sorry, but I do respect your opinion). I didn't actually think about that. But that is really a thing to think about. Thank you for the feedback, Pankaj !
  6. Hans says:
I agree with you that new content is diamond. People are interested in revolutionairy idea's. If you have an really awesome idea, the bloggers will pick it up and link back to your awesome new idea. That will increase SEO rankings AND you will become a respected author, because of your great idea's. Thats like killing two birds with one stone ;)
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Glad that you agree. Yes, that is the reason why I value new content more than old content. Thank you for the opinion.
  7. Robin says:
Yes this is a correct thing becoz even though the old is gold but the blogging is new diamond. A very interesting post really nice
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thank you for agreeing with me. Thanks for the valuable feedback !
  8. Mani Viswanathan says:
I agree with you partly. Sometimes even old posts (reframed nicely) get you good traffic & readers.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I agree. I do rewrite my old posts. Thanks for the comment !
  9. Dennis Edell says:
BOTH of course. Here's how I see the use in old writing though... Lets say some info is a year old. As long as the info is still valid, and I can put my own spin or 'voice' into it, I ask one question: How many new bloggers, who have never seen it before, have joined the force over that past year? Shines it in a whole 'nother light, don't it. Hey, perhaps I'm biased; my whole model is coaching beginners, but it is what it is. :-)
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I think people has mistaken me on this post. All I wanted to say through this post was "New idea is better than old idea". (This is my opinion). I wanted to know what people are thinking about this issue. Yeah, I agree that we can write good content (or we have to) for the newbies. (This is the primary reason why I support writing old content - though I agree more with Writing new ideas). Thanks for the honest opinion, Dennis ! This is what exactly what I wanted to hear from people (although I am a supporter of the opp. side). I am very much happy that I wrote this post.
      • Dennis Edell says:
Thanks and please don't mistake either. New is of course extremely important.....without new, you'll run out of old, hahahahaha. Seriously though, I'm just uncomfortable saying one is better then the other when i believe both are important. :)
        • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Oh, No, I won't mistake you. I am a big supporter of writing old content but I am more passionate towards writing new ideas. :) That's right. I understand. Thank you for the honest opinion !
  10. Lucian says:
To write for a blog you must be passionated by what your write. If you feel a domain you should only want to post good content. Good content can be your opinion on something old or to promote something new.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I agree with that. It can be. But all I wanted to say is that New ideas are better than old ones. Thanks for the comment, Lucian
  11. The Bad Blogger says:
After reading through a few comments, I realize almost everyone still prefer old as in writing it a different way for example... more interesting stuff or add some information that was left out into the old content.... Just like what Barbara Ling, Virtual Coach said... skillful writing does make a big different in how reader react... Look... have you ever gone to this blog "http://www.michelfortin.com/" you should go sign up as a rss reader... as he will regenerate his old post and add a few extra information to it... well he still get tons of reader... It proof most people still like old content.... oh... do you know who is Gary Halbert... well here is his website - http://www.thegaryhalbertletter.com/newsletter-archives.htm go take a look... there are content that was written in 1986 and many more... but look at his Alexa ranking... Well... it proof old stuff still works.... and it goes the same to old content... it's how we write that will change the way reader react....
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I never said that writing old stuff doesn't work. All I said was it is not a good option because you won't be able to maintain your traffic. Yes, I do agree with that. Skillful writing can help a blogger to create awesome content but you know :- People know, I mean people read 100s of blogs everyday. They know when they see the same thing. And most people tend to not "share or react to these posts". (This is the primary reason why we don't have that many successful articles). Writing the same old thing works and they get new reactions because we have newbie blogger (we have 100 of bloggers stepping into this blogosphere, but one day, everything is going to be clear). Anyway, Thanks for the follow up. Happy to see those bloggers are successful at what they are doing. Again, I am not saying that you should not write old things. You may, but try to add new information.
    • Dennis Edell says:
Halbert himself has passed, but his stuff is still good. :)
      • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I have never heard of this blogger. Anyway, Thanks to you guys, I will check his site.
  12. Pumama says:
I think the article maybe OLD with someone but maybe NEW with the others.I agree new idea is good but remake some old ideas is rather good. Glad to know you Jeevan,I am a 17 year old Blogger from Vietnam..Your writing skill is very good. Sorry for my bad English! :(
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I don't really agree with that. I read a lot of articles with the old thing. The first thing I do is close that tab. Oh..Another 17 yr old blogger. Thanks. That's ok, man. Don't worry. :) Thanks for the comment !
  13. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Jeevan, In old articles can you maybe find interesting thing people don’t have write about, get idée’s, pick up a small niche, ect... Of course is it more fun to write about something new and inspiration subject.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks for agreeing with me, Lennart ! Something new means more traffic (most of the times). Thanks for the comment.
  14. TJ McDowell says:
I guess the question is old for who? Sure, if you're writing the same stuff on your blog every week, get a new topic! On the other hand though, I would guess that I'm not the only one writing on the topics that I post on my blog. My reaction or technique blogging is probably different though. Honestly, I very rarely, actually never, go to Google to see if someone has already covered my next blog topic. I really don't care if they have. I'm just hoping that my readers find it interesting and useful.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Yeah, I agree with you on that. There might be lot of other bloggers writing about it - but at least we should try to come up with new ideas. I don't look at Google either, but certain topics you just know them. Example : How to get more comments. This topic has been written over and over again by millions of bloggers. I would really advise someone not to write about this unless they have something new to share. Anyway, Thanks for your opinion, TJ Jeevan
  15. The Bad Blogger says:
woo... never thought I was host... in Famous Bloggers... Anyway... just look around you... what do you think is new in the make money blogging community.... well... the truth is nothing new... whatever you type into Google search engine about making money online... the result shows... not new results but old results and those results are just competing each other to see who came in first, second or third spot... where else all of the content of the result in the search are actually the same only the way they write is different.. What's"new" is the technology... for example, long ago there is no such thing as blogging only website are available and it's very difficult to change stuff around with a website, someone invented "blog" guess what.... That's what I call "new" and it slowly and slowly from just writing personal stuff to what it is right now.... Look this explain that nothing is going to be new unless the technology changes which in other words... whatever we are blogging or tools we are using are just old stuff... the only different is ... HOW WE USE THEM ! and if you do not know how to use them and kept thinking new ideal to get audience attention... guess what... you are wasting ur time creating new ideal... well I'm just an average blogger and I rather give the creating new ideal to those big time blogger who had the resource then wasting my time creating something new.... and all in all it goes the same to writing new ideal content...
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I agree on that. But in blogging, search engine is not so important as your readers. Readers - they very well know when they see the same content. I don't really agree with you on that (Its is really fun to discuss with a person of different opinion). The way we use them matters - I agree, but still we all can come up with new creative ideas - compare blogging with different things in our own life. I don't really know whether that will work or not. You may be able to get traffic, but you won't be able to maintain it by writing the same thing differently. Anyway, Thanks for the comment !
  16. Barbara Ling, Virtual Coach says:
Personally, I think a skillful writing can take any new OR old content and make it seem like something completely fresh and shiny. After all, social networking has been going on now since the 1980s (back then it was called Usenet or Netnews) - it's nothing new! But you sure wouldn't think that the way people talk about it now.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I agree with your idea. Its not that you can't do it. The thing is that I don't like to read the same thing again, even if it is presented in a different way. But still I look over the posts (just to make sure whether they have new content or not). Oh ! I didn't know that (I wasn't even born at that time..hehehe) Anyway, Thanks for the comment, Barbara !
  17. James Johnston says:
Great post. I see this all the time. I spend a lot of time in the design blogs and a lot of post I see are the same but with update lists of the same topic. I get tired of this. For me, not only do I get tired of reading same old , same old articles, I don't like writing what everyone has already said. What I like to do is write new content or respin an older topic and add more information to a topic. Generally I do this when I am having writer's block and need a topic for a new post.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks ! I know, I do too. Same with me. People nowadays just blog about the same old thing. Same with me. I don't like to post about the same topic unless I have something new. Anyway, Thanks for the comment, James ! Jeevan Jacob John
