How to Solve the Create Twitter List Bug

November 14, 2010 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Hesham Zebida 3,871

Twitter Lists

There are a few issues with Twitter that I discover while using it’s features. I like to create Twitter Lists and list my friends and followings so I can keep up with their tweets in an organized way. There is one Twitter bug I found when I wanted to create a new Twitter List, it’s when you create a list and you can not find it anywhere!

I was connecting with a -first time on twitter- friend of mine, actually he was the one who discover this Twitter bug when I was guiding him on how to create a twitter list, it took us about 15 minutes to find out what’s wrong with Twitter, he discovered the solution by accident!

How to create a Twitter List?

It’s so simple! When you create a Twitter List, don’t forget to add a list description, that’s all!

P.S. some may think this bug started to appear after the New Twitter went live, we actually tried to create lists on the old twitter and it seems that the whole system is infected now 🙂

Alright, a chance to mention a few of our Twitter lists that you may find interesting:

Problems with Twitter Lists (Known Issue) support page

After finding the bug and the solution, I found out it was mentioned in the Problems with Twitter Lists (Known Issue) support page. So if you have any other issues with Twitter in the future then you might need to take a look to that page.

Oh! You may also like to check the Twitter Dummy Guide, the only Twitter guide you will ever need to master Twitter by my friend John Aguiar.

I am having trouble with my lists. they do not update. Any idea why
  2. Geoff says:
I was experiencing this problem frustratingly, exactly the same symptons as all the other reported problems. I managed to resolve on my own in the end (adding description made no difference) - Appeared to be a max amount of lists you can create - I deleted one of my lists and then it allowed me to add one. You would have thought they would have at least produced an error message to say that you have reached maximum lists capacity.
    • Hesham says:
mmm.. I never thought about "max amount of twitter lists", good point! Thanks for sharing your thoughts Geoff
      • Geoff Jackson says:
        You're welcome :)

I stepped in this pile of goo just last night as I tried to create my first list ever. I finally got the job done (after deciding a description was required even though it says it's optional) but now when I try to add people to the list by clicking FOLLOWING to display the list, then click the list button on the person I want to add and checking the box I get a pop-up message at the top saying "There was an error updating the list". I've been able to add one person to my list and no more. Everyone else is rejected/errored. Thank you for posting the links to the Twitter resources, I definately need to go read those!
  4. Kristi says:
I ran into this issue a few days ago - tried creating a list in two different accounts to no avail. They should really mark that field as required.
  5. TJ McDowell says:
How are people using the Twitter lists? Are they putting their shopping lists online?
    • Chris says:
I use the lists to better organize those I follow. I have lists for different subjects. As you gain more and more followers, the updates start to all blend together. I follow people in different subject areas.
  6. Rahul says:

  9. Carlton says:
I had the exact same problem! I didn't realize it was a bug though; I just thought I was accidentally removing my lists when managing them. I'm a goof.

    • Hesham says:
Hey Dev, I really wanted to share this since long time back, but well... it just happened to have time for it :)
  15. Mani Viswanathan says:
hmm..that's a bug because the description right way goes as a meta-tag & when a meta-tag goes blank the function doesn't get called & breaks. They should have added a warning message when a person doesn't enter the description. Thanks for updating abt this bug.
    • Hesham says:
Exactly Mani, and your explanation makes sense! And I agree with you on including a warning message that could solve this problem for ever and save our time!
  16. S Emerson says:
This be something newish. I have never had a problem making lists (although haven't make a new one in quite a while) and some of mine don't have a description yet.
    • Hesham says:
      Cool! thanks for stopping by!
  17. Ileane says:
Hey Hesham, this is a great tip and something that I always do when I create a Twitter list. The twitter list description is really helpful for other people to see if they want to subscribe to the list but most of the time the name of the list is self-explanatory. I'm using lists to create my Paper.li daily newspapers and I think they are a lot of fun and a great way to promote your friends too. Thanks Hesham!
    • Hesham says:
Yes, this is true Ileane.. Thanks for the explanation and the info.. you rock!
  18. Patricia says:
Hi Hesham Thanks for letting us know. I just have followers and following. Is the lists part of the new Twitter? I don't have that installed as the old Twitter working okay for me and any techie things I leave well alone lol I don't have thousands following me so at the moment so managing to keep up. Can see how it would be helpful with large followings. Patricia Perth Australia
    • Hesham says:
Hi Patricia, Twitter Lists are not new, they exists since long time ago, also it's not a thing that you should install, it can be found somewhere on the menus! Oh! and I am listing you in the Famous Blogger List and also as a Butterfly :) I will maybe write something about the Social Media Butterflies soon to explain this P.S. I've sent you an email now with a screenshot, I hope it will help!
      • Patricia says:
Thanks Hesham. You are so kind. I got the email and if I get stuck I will get back to you. Things you techies find easy are usually beyond me lol In fact I am doing a post on that soon. Will let you know when it is published cos it will give you an insight into this non-techies brain :-) Patricia Perth Australia
        • Hesham says:
Haha.. no worries Patricia, this happen to all of us :) Looking forward to read your post!
  19. Matt Morrison says:
Ahhh! I'm so glad to read this. I was having so many issues with lists on twitter and it was for this reason exactly! Thanks!
    • Hesham says:
      Glad to hear that! enjoy
