Blogging is like Driving a Vehicle!

February 9, 2011 - Last Modified: February 10, 2011 by Jeevan Jacob John

Driving A Vehicle

Have you considered comparing blogging and driving ? Yes, Blogging is a lot like driving, and I will tell you how.

Blogging and Driving

There are a lot of elements in driving, such as the steering wheel, acceleration pedal, brakes, clutch etc. Likewise, in blogging we have perseverance, dedication (passion), patience and, of course, actual blogging (creating ideas, writing uniquely, promoting and networking diligently). In Driving, we control the car using the Steering wheel. We have a steering wheel in blogging, too.

3 P’s of Blogging – Perseverance, Passion and Patience

3 P's of Blogging - Perseverance, Passion and Patience

Perseverance is about not giving up. As a blogger, you should be determined. You should try as hard as you can. If you can’t win it, then you know one thing  You need to try harder. Everything in this world is easy, once you work hard. No one can beat you if you try hard. But you have to have perseverance. Dedication is the next element. Are you dedicated to your niche ?

A dedicated blogger works hard to maintain and gain traffic. A dedicated blogger is the one who ends up being one of the “most popular bloggers.” Dedicated bloggers are dedicated in providing their users with new content. They are dedicated and faithful to their visitors. The third element is patience.

In blogging, you need a lot of patience. These three together form our steering wheel. In the case of blogging wheel, we have a synergistic interaction – The three elements work together (the whole as an interaction is greater than the sum of all 3 individual elements).  If one is missing, then the whole thing will be out of sync.

How does a steering wheel help with driving? The steering wheel allows you to steer in the right direction, right ? Likewise, the blogging steering wheel will steer you down the path of blogging success.

Accelerate Your Vehicle – Speed !

Accelerate Your Vehicle - Speed

Just like the steering wheel, the acceleration and brakes are important. Let me tell you about the acceleration. Acceleration allows you to drive. Without acceleration, your vehicle won’t move.

In blogging, content creation, promotion and networking form the acceleration. They allow you to move down the path of success. The speed of this acceleration depends on “working hard” – whether it is creating unique content, promoting it, or networking (engaging with your fellow bloggers).

But be careful, too much acceleration can be dangerous. I mean, if you drive above the speed limit, chances of accident increases. Likewise in blogging, if you put too much effort on one little thing, it’s going to cause an accident. If you spend too much time on creating content and too little time on other elements, it’s going to affect your acceleration.

The appropriate ratio of work for acceleration is 2:1:2. What does acceleration do to your vehicle ? It allows you to drive faster, and to reach your destination faster, right? Likewise, in blogging, Content creation, promotion and networking allow your blog to move toward its destination.

Pour In Some Fuel!

Pour In Some Fuel

And now, the most important element of  your vehicle – FUEL ! Yes, you need fuel to drive the vehicle, right? So, what element can be a fuel to your blogging vehicle? Any guesses? Let me tell you – Time Investment.

Your blogging vehicle will only move if you invest time in it (this is the reason why I wrote ratios above). If you invest a good deal of time in your blog, you will be moving in the right direction.

Let me tell you what my last guest post at Famous blogger taught me (“Old is Gold But in Blogging New is Diamond“). It was a controversial issue, but the title was not good enough to attract much traffic. I was little sad at first (I was thinking, “If only if I had really thought about the title”),  but then I realized that the experience was good. Why? Because that failure was a new lesson to me.

If you spend little time on any of these important elements, is going to affect your blogging vehicle.

So start working and invest some time in every element of blogging.

Hey Jeevan! I love the analogy :) Maybe you already touched this in your acceleration part, but what about using a clutch? OK, so I have always driven a car which has manual transmission, so using a clutch is very familiar to me. At first the engine is running and you need to use the clutch to make it moving by switching to first gear. Eventually you are not satisfied enough with the speed you are driving, so you need a clutch to move to second, third, fourth and fifth gear. I guess this relates to blogging as well. You may start out small but eventually you reach the limit of a certain switch and then you need move a step forward. For example, you may start blogging with text only content, but then you move to videos or audio as well and so on. As you do this, your "speed" increases and you are eventually ready to move forward.

its kind of true , the road is never the same . bumps and turns as you move on . the idea is to learn as you drive and go as the road demands with available resources ... nice post title

    Great Post! Keep more
  4. Murugappan says:
Amazing post, JJJ. :-) But I'd say blogging and driving are a li'l different because while driving we always try to keep away from traffic but in blogging, we die out for traffic! ;-) Just kidding John, great post this one!
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hey Murugappan, Thanks ! ;) That's a great thought ! Thank you for sharing your thought !

Excellent article. Comparing your blog to a vehicle is a get way to discribe blogging. Well done.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks ! Thank you for the compliment !
  8. Pubudu says:
You're absolutely right mate... A blogger needs a lot of patience! People without patience tries to do various stuff, buys various products to boost their blogs, but ultimately, they are going to loose a lot of traffic in the long run! Need to be hard working! :D
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Pubudu, Thanks ! I agree. Yeah, using different products to boost your traffic may help a little bit (in the short term). But it is (for sure) useless for long term. Thank you for sharing your views !

Hi Vijayaraj, Glad that you agree with me. Patience and Time Invest are really important, indeed. Thnk you for sharing your opinion !

Hi Jeevan, Nice, entertaining post. It proves once again that there's a car analogy for everything. In one of my favorite discussion sites, there is even a member named "BadCarAnalogyGuy" who specializes in that. The best part of your analogy is time as fuel. The only problem is the lack of gas stations in this life. I like your excellent choice of images for illustrations.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Val, Thanks ! Glad that you like it ! Images - I should thank Hesham for that, because he is the one who chose those images. Thank you, Hesham ! Thank you for dropping by, Val !
  12. Lakshmi - Virtual assistant says:
Hi Jeevan Great post and funny too. Comparing Driving with blogging a different one which i have not seen till now. Great analog and the fueling part was so good. Liked it very much.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Lakshmi, Thanks ! Glad that you like it. Thank you ! Thank you for stopping by !
  13. Dave Grimes II says:
J3, Some interesting comparisons being drawn here. I think the most interesting point you've made here is "fueling up." It's definitely a step too many talented bloggers skip. Creating great content is awesome, but if you're not pulling in an audience to consume your content... you might as well have never even posted it.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Dave, Thanks ! I can't agree more. I have seen many bloggers who actually don't work on the fueling part. But my advise is that they should. Because Fueling determines your success-ability on other things. I agree. Thank you for the feedback !
  14. Alex says:
Hello Jeevan, I guess making or thinking about blogging with the use of analogies can make it easy to understand and use for those that are just starting. Having something familiar to compare blogging is definitely a lot easier then just learning all new things. Also, connecting critical features of blogging with the equally important analog part can help keep to focus on the most important stuff, then losing time on less productive tasks.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hello Alex, Yes, they sure do. Especially now, I try to focus more on analogies (they make posts more interesting). I agree. Yes, when choosing your analogy, you must be careful on what you compare with. Anyway, thank you for the comment !
  15. Robert Dempsey says:
Hi Jeevan this is a great analogy and one I think everyone can get into. It seems you hit the brakes at the end of the post so you didn't go to far. So perhaps the implied brakes on the post are ending it when your point is made.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Robert, Thanks ! I should have added the brakes into it. Anyway, thank you for sharing your opinion !
  16. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Jeevan, Many different stories have I heard what about “What is blogging”, but this was very funny and good. Both because I compared what my wife do when she drive the car (painting nails, talking in mobile, make up, ect), no concentration at all and when I drive the car.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks ! Glad that you like mine. ;) Hahaha. Thank you for your comment !
  17. Mavis Nong says:
Hi Jeevan, What a great driving/blogging analogy you are using here. There is no reason to fail at blogging if we use your suggested ratio, keeping the right balance for everything. Thanks for sharing the perfect recipe for blogging success, Jeevan. All the best, Mavis
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Mavis, Thanks ! I am glad that you agree with my ratios ! Welcome and thank you for your feedback, Jeevan Jacob John

    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
hahaha ;) Thanks ! I didn't really get what you said in your comment. Would you mind to write another comment ? Thank you for sharing your feedback !
      • Darren Scott Monroe says:
I dont know if you saw the TV show "PIMP my ride" Google it. I was making a reference to that
        • Jeevan Jacob John says:
No, I didn't. Anyway, I will check it out. Thank you for the reply !
  19. Tinh says:
Nice article and can't agree more as we have to stay focused on the our way. Don't "sleep" :-)
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hey Tinh, Thanks ! Thank you for agreeing ! By the way, how is blogging going ? I am sort of in a tough position right now, but I think I can beat my obstacles. Anyway, thank you for your comments, Jeevan Jacob John
  20. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Jeevan, I like your clever blogging/driving analogy. So many elements in each exercise which compare favorably. Your acceleration ratio seems to be about right. I've messed with it in the past - 7 blog posts in a day with little promotion and no networking - and subsequently suffered. It was like driving 75 miles per hour down a side street; everybody probably thought I was a jerk. Then I accelerated like a turtle - 1 post per week, heavy networking, little promotion. I made plenty of friends but didn't create enough. Now I post daily. I do a fair amount of promotion. I network moderately. Most importantly I've ramped up my guest posting campaign. This leverages my presence and ensure I'm engaging in a smooth acceleration. Not too fast, not too slow, just right. Now it's time to persist and not mess with the ratio when I feel impatient. Patience is almost like fuel injector fluid; it keeps things moving along smoothly. No knocking or pinging. I'm also big on commenting, as you might have noticed ;) Writing thoughtful comments can serve as a mini guest posting opportunity. Instead of penning a comment drive-by why not be co-author, adding value to the post? It's a win-win situation and has increased my readership too. Thanks for sharing your insight Jeevan. You're clearly in the blogging fast lane :) RB
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Ryan, Thanks ! Glad that you like it. Those are some great experiences to share (I am sure that they were helpful ; experiences teach us). Good ! I am trying to get in a good schedule with Monday, Wednesday and Friday as my posting days (writing posts for my own blog). I will use other days to work on Promotion, Networking, writing guest articles, commenting etc. Of course :) I have seen you in many blogs (Commenting). And I like that principle of commenting and engaging. I haven't thought of that, but that sure sounds good. (I have been planning to comment wilding - viral commenting in many blogs). Thanks ! Welcome ! Thank you for sharing your ideas, Jeevan Jacob John
  21. TJ McDowell says:
So I'm kind of curious how you came up with your ratios. Have you talked to other bloggers and found those to be the best ratios for everyone?
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hmm. no, I should have done that. I came up with these ratios (and I think that they are accurate, but I still need more feedback to confirm it). Anyway, thank you TJ ! Thank you for asking the question, Jeevan Jacob John
  22. Wasim Ismail says:
Like the Idea of Accelerating and Brakes, so true, when blogging you have to have a write balance, too much of it can relay mess you up, if its not done properly, and going to slow, you will always be left behind, i think we need like a Cruse Control :) Nice Work
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Wasim, Glad that you like it. I agree :) I should have included that :) Thanks ! Thank you for sharing your views, Jeevan Jacob John
  23. Morgan says:
I love that you compared blogging to driving - very funny and TRUE! This should be a MUST READ for all bloggers! :) Thanks for the great tips!
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Morgan, Thanks ! Glad that you like it. Thanks ! Have a great day ! Thank you for sharing your comments ! Jeevan Jacob John
