Blog Time Management Tips and Tricks

February 2, 2011 - Last Modified: February 4, 2011 by Mitz Pantic 2,902

Blog Time Management

When you choose blogging for a career, it can be a lonely path, as you will be the one in charge. There will be no one there to tell you what to do, when to work, what your schedule is, and so on. You need to develop your own blog time management skills in order to seriously treat this venture as a true business. If you waste time on unimportant tasks, your effort will be exhausted before you have the chance to become a success. Blog time management is the same as managing any time in a business.

Time equals production and production equals money. If you are moving into the blogging business and have never had to manage your own time previously, I sincerely hope that you realize how important it is. You might be starting your blog as a hobby, but if you stick at it, it will turn into a business, and you will need to use these blog time management tips to enhance your blogging career.

Acquiring the mindset of a successful blogger is a process that includes many factors. One of these factors is learning how to manage your time efficiently.

Blog Time Management Tips

Blog time management tips

The first thing I would suggest to any new blogger is to distinguish your working time, your personal time, and your free time. For true blog time management, we must separate each of these times in order to focus on your blogging business.

Working time

Working time is when you are producing output that is beneficial to your business. This is when you are adding value, and you feel that you have achieved something towards your blogging career. Usually the working day is considered to be Monday through Friday, 9 to 5. If you think of it like a job and work these hours, anything before or after these hours is not working time. Obviously, you can choose your hours.  For example, if you choose to work from 9 AM to 5 PM, you should be bound and be using blog time management skills within these hours.

Personal time

Personal time is time that you can set aside to yourself or your family. It is important to create a balance in life ,as you will most likely be working by yourself and shut off from the real world. You cannot neglect this time. Personal time is usually spent doing your everyday chores such as cooking dinner, driving the kids around, paying the bills, and so on. I am calling this personal time because you do not usually do these things in your working hours and there is no reason to start now.

Free time

I do not know many bloggers that actually have free time as they spend all their time learning how to blog. Another term for free time would be “shut down time,” and it is good if you can do this. As I stated earlier, there is a balance that you need to keep. I know – when I first started blogging, I was obsessed with it, and it was very hard to drag myself away from it. I could not sit there, I could not relax, and all I wanted to do was talk about blogging. Even if I decided to read a book, it would be about blogging. You must be able to stop thinking about your blogging business or you are defeating the purpose of creating a business with freedom in mind.

Why is blog time management so important?

Why is blog time management so important

As we all know, working on the Internet or anywhere near a computer can be a very distracting thing to do. The Internet, with all its beautiful information, is tempting us, and we could possibly sit there all day reading interesting stories about anything and everything. I know I get tempted to stay on certain blogs reading their fantastic posts and interacting by commenting. This can take up a lot of time, and although commenting is beneficial for your blog, it can also be a massive time waster. You should only do this in its allocated time slots. Everything you do in your working time must be controlled by some type of schedule or routine. Blog time management is so important that it is the difference between your success or failure in the blogging world.

Most bloggers do not have any supervision, no one to tell them what to do or when to do it.

What NOT to do when controlling your blog time management?

time management blogging

Everything to do with blogging is a system that you follow, and this is no different with blog time management as it is a system as well. Your system could involve a series of tasks, a set of lists, or a schedule on a whiteboard in front of your desk. This is a great strategy to use and will help you avoid the nasty little distractions that creep up on you.

Some distractions to avoid when trying to control your blog time management include:

  • Reading personal e-mails in working time.
  • Taking personal calls in working time.
  • Browsing the Internet with no purpose in mind.
  • Researching a topic on the Internet and getting off track.
  • Learning new blogging skills and strategies and starting them before completing your work.
  • Falling into the information overload trap.
  • Getting caught up in great sales pitches, and spending time wondering if you should buy or not.
  • Buying a product and never using it, and then feeling guilt.
  • Allowing your friends visit you within working time.
  • People entering your workspace interrupting you and ruining your train of thought.

A question that you need to ask yourself is “If  I was being employed by someone and they were paying me, would this action be okay with them?” Another way of looking at it is, would you yourself like to pay someone that spent all day reading personal e-mails and talking on the phone?

Every blogger will come across a distraction that is almost like a habit, and it will deter them from their work. You need to recognize your main distraction and avoid it like the plague. If you enjoy something, and it is holding up your working time, you yourself know that it is meant to be allocated to free time. Allow this distraction some allocated time, and you can look forward to doing it without interrupting your working time.

Positive tips for your blog time management:

Positive tips for your blog time management

There are certain things you really should do when you are organizing your blog time management. It is important to be aware, remain focused on your path, and treat your blogging career as a serious business. If you have been self-employed before and had your own business, most of what I am telling you here would be very familiar to you.

Choose your working hours and stick to them.

You could choose to work a mere two hours a day or maybe even 10 hours a day, but the key is to stick to it. Do not let your distractions interfere with these working hours. If you find this hard, you might need to pretend that you are being employed by someone. If you start your business by squandering time on useless tasks that are not productive your business, will not succeed. Choose your working hours and go to work.

Turn up to work on time.

Just because you’re the boss, you think you can turn up to work any time you like. This is a big mistake because it shows that you are not interested in time management. The most successful bloggers have made millions of dollars and still turn up for work for their working time. I must admit that in this business, there is a lot of leisure time to be had when you become more successful. But if you have chosen your hours, and it could possibly even dwindle down to one hour a day, you should turn up for work on time.

Focus your energy on what you should be doing and allocate time for your distractions.

Focusing on your work in your working time is not as easy as it sounds. There are some small little tricks that I use to keep myself on schedule, because if I do not finish my allocated work, I cannot get to my personal and free time. One of the things that I do is reward myself with something at the end of my work day, however the work needs to be completed. It could be something simple, it really doesn’t matter. If I have a task that I have trouble focusing on, I will have an alarm go off when the work should be completed. This way, I am watching the clock and trying to achieve my task before the alarm goes off. I only use this for the tasks that cannot keep my attention.

Create a balance between your work life, family life, and leisure time.

A balance must be created between your work life, your family life, and your free time. We all have obligations, besides working, that need to be filled. You cannot afford to neglect any one thing or the balance will tip in one direction. It is extra hard to maintain this balance when you do not walk out the door and get into your car and go to work every day. When people see that you are not doing this, they immediately presume that you have a lot of free time on your hands. It must be clear that you have work time, family time, and free time.

Let your friends know your working time.

If you have friends that are not into blogging, they will find it very hard to understand your commitment. They probably have no idea what a blog is, let alone blog time management. You need to explain to them clearly what it is you do and when you do it. When they find out that you are working at home, I can almost guarantee that they will drop in unannounced. Sit down and have a chat with your friends, just like you must with your family, and let them know about your working time.

Inform your family about your schedule.

Your family must be well informed about your schedule and the work you are doing. Let them know that there is time for them after you have finished work, just like any normal job. If you give them that time, they will be happy and not intrude on your working time. This is just human nature, because if you neglect to give them attention, they will demand it even more.

Create a timetable of jobs to do.

Timetables are great when it comes to block time management. It’s whether you can stick to it or not. Create for yourself a timetable or a schedule, and see if you can stick to it. If you cannot, start writing to do lists and see how that goes. Either way, you need to stick to something that is going to help you with your blog time management. It is extremely important, as using your time efficiently will no doubt bring you success.

Using tools to save time.

If you can save time on some things, you can get more work done and achieve more. Every successful blogger has an arsenal of tools that they use to help manage their time and raise production levels. My tools include WordPress plug-ins, software, and of course, a computer. Tools such as search engine optimization plug-ins can not only save you time, but they can also save you a lot of money in outsourcing fees.

Blog time management when you have small children?

Blog time management when you have small children

Having school age children and a work at home job is a lot easier than having young children in your full-time care while you are working. Thankfully, my children are at school, and therefore, I have plenty of working hours with no interruptions. However, for the people with young children at home, you almost have to be performing a juggling act to control your blog time management and the care of your children at the same time. Do not think this is an impossible task, as we all know that stay at home mums can do it just as well is any of us. It just takes a more detailed and flexible schedule.

Learning new skills versus blog time management?

We all love to learn new skills ,and being a blogger, makes this a natural instinct that we cannot avoid. However, in true reality, we all know that too much learning can eat away actual working time.
You need to allocate some time to learning, however if it goes over the time, you need to finish this learning in your free time. I know this sounds strict, but many people are can share in by learning more and more information. Someone has to put a stop to it.

Can you be successful without blog time management?

successful blog time management

Blog time management is one of the many factors that contribute to a successful blogging career. We all have the same amount of time, and I do not like to hear anyone say that they do not have time to do something. This just means that you are not managing your time correctly. People take time for granted and let it fly by. Use it to your advantage and treat it as a gift, as we all have been given it to use and not squander away. Making the most of your time does not just apply to blogging. It applies to all parts of your life.

If you think you can be successful without managing your time to achieve your goals, then let me know – how do you do it?

I myself have a strict schedule to adhere to. which involves using time management skills that I have picked up over the three years that I have been blogging full-time. Unfortunately, even if you possess blog time management skills, there is no guarantee that you will actually use them to your advantage.

Hey Mitz Pantic !!! Great article !!! Its been great to read such article.First, prepare your work list for the following day the evening or night before. The best exercise is for you to plan your entire next day as the last thing you do before coming home from work. When you plan your day the night before, your subconscious then goes to work on your plans and goals while you are asleep. Very often you will wake up in the morning with ideas and insights that apply to the work of the day. A major benefit of preparing your daily list the night before is that this exercise lets you sleep more soundly. A major reason for insomnia is your lying awake trying not to forget to remember everything that you have to do the following day.Once you have written down everything you have to do on your list, it clears your mind and enables you to sleep deeply. This will help you increase productivity throughout the next work day. Keep posting such article. have a great day

  3. Julia says:
Time management is definitely something I struggle with. Prioritizing is key, I think, as well as sticking to a schedule and making a to do list every morning. Still, it is all to easy to lose time surfing the internet.
  4. Irene Enriquez says:
Wow! I really needed these tips! I'm still working full time so I have to set aside an extra time for blogging. I've been blogging on and off for a few years now, and I think I would have achieved significant success if I had blogged more consistently. So this year, I'm really going to take blogging seriously. That's why discovering this post if perfect timing. :) Thanks!

    This article is so true!
  6. Mark says:
Mitz, You managed to fit an entire time management course specific to bloggers into one (albeit lengthy) article/blog post. Amazing! I made special note of the "not getting distracted by personal emails, off-topic subjects, etc." I know many a bloggers who have had to get an office away fro home just to keep from getting distracted. Of course, if you have an office away from home and you are a blogger then you have officially "made it" as a blogger...;) Great article! Mark
  7. Pubudu says:
Time management! :D One of the things that i tried to do for many months! You really need to manage your time... Should work hard and spend more time on your blog. But should not spend too much time, then you'll get board and leave it! :D
  8. Aloys Jacobs says:
what I do is set time frames for all tasks and try to be effective in those times so as not to get longer. If a time frame proves to be unrealistic, I will adjust it. But I will always try and keep a certain high efficiency/time ratio. As I get more experience with the various tasks, my times will improve. It takes some self-stretching to get to be effective in as little time as possible, but it's worth the effort, simply because it will become a habit in all you do. Another reason it's important to time-manage your online work because otherwise you'll have no offline life left :)
  9. jhon says:
In this article the main emphasis is on time management and privacy to work on the blog as concentration is required for blogging.
  10. Val says:
Nice article and solid advice. Unfortunately, it is easier to read this and agree than to actually follow it. Two other tips I can add: 1) Prioritize! You'll never be able to finish all your work. So set priorities and deadlines, and do first things first. 2) Physical ToDo lists. Maybe it's just me, but writing a small ToDo list for the day on a piece of paper helps me to achieve more and feel more satisfied. A simple act of ticking those buggers off is so relieving. And you don't have to think of what comes next. The key is to keep the list short and realistic.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Hi Val, You are right, it is easier to read this and agree than to actually follow it! Even though I wrote this article, it does not mean that I stick to all these rules all of the time. Although I would love to, and I do try to, it doesn't always work out like that. Thanks for the extra tips, they are really handy and are also necessary in the blogging world. I like " to do" lists the best! I have lists all over the house; I have lists for my children, lists my husband, and lists for me. Maybe I have a problem! The thing is, once you start crossing things off your list it makes you feel good!
  11. Tantan says:
Hi Mitz, It's very complete article about time management, nice job :) I realize lately that time management is very important, I think it affects half of successful blogging. Honestly it's quite difficult, we need practice and familiarize ourselves
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Hi Tantan I still struggle with time management every day and I am constantly reorganizing my time. You also have to be kind of flexible when blogging as well.
  12. Timo Kiander says:
Great article! It is very important to realize, that time you can allocate to blogging is different depending of your life situation. Whether you are living single, you are married or when you have children - the time you can allocate is different. I still believe that it is a matter of adjustments, like setting yourself a schedule and informing others that you shouldn't be disturbed. The timetable part is also important as you mentioned. Having a structure around your blogging activities is very important, since you can focus on certain tasks on certain days. I try to work on my blog (with a help of a timer) during the morning hours, before going to work. This means that my home is quiet and I can concentrate tor working without any distractions. Also, batching is a great way to accomplish lot's of stuff.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Sounds like a great plan Timo! I think the morning is a great time too! It's too early for the kids to get up and the friends to ring and chat! LOL
  13. ZK says:
I always believe in making list every morning and finish the task. If something not completed today I shift them to next day with more priority. Reading and acquiring knowledge is the thing of night, because that interest me and I can do it without any disturbance from anyone.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Hi ZK If I could leave the reading to the night time I would be a millionaire! There are so many interesting articles coming out at the moment. They are just getting bigger and better. I do try to be good though! Sometimes when I see something and I know it is taking up too much time I save the link on my list to go back to later. You really have to be an expert at organizing your information and files in this business too.
  14. Murlu says:
I try to set just one major item to work on each day along with a few other smaller ones - once I get home from work, I dive right into those most valuable actions and once I'm done with that, even if I don't get the others complete, I can step back and say "yup, did a great job today" :D
    • Mitz Pantic says:
That's a great attitude and that in itself will make you successful! Good on you Murlu!
    • James Moralde says:
Just one major item! Heard it only here. And I think it makes sense. I've just watched Brad Gosse expounding the importance of making a plan. I do make written plans, mostly consisting of a lot of things. Usually I accomplish nothing because I spread myself thin trying to work them all up. Probably if I go to this extreme of just focusing on one major item, I just might see some accomplishment. Gotta try it. :)
  15. Ahmad Wali says:
Wow! that is the word after reading these tips because all applied to me. All the distractions you listed I am going through them. It is my first time here on famousbloggers.net I also like to read about where to get blogging ideas and where to focus which topic.
    • ZK says:
Generally we have all same kind of distraction. We are working on net and going through that we saw many interesting titles, topics and photos and hence we get distracted as a result.
  16. Dennis Edell says:
Interesting post Mitz, and certainly good tips for the average blogger. I'd like you to keep an eye on my blog; perhaps even subscribe so you don't miss it.....sometime soon I will be posting a sort of challenge to anyone that can figure out a good, daily management scenario for ME. My day as it stands right now, riddled with personal physical health issues is above and beyond any you have heard before.....I'm just this side of putting a guarantee on that. ;-) I say "keep an eye out" because once I do get around to writing it, it will take several day to get just right before publication. :)
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Hi Dennis thanks for your comment. I went and checked out your blog and found some interesting posts that I got stuck reading. Talk about distractions! Hopefully get back there in time to your competition.
      • Dennis Edell says:
Oh Mitz, your comment fills me with emotions - - "stuck" is exactly what should happen! yet, "distraction' isn't exactly good. lol Be sure to comment your incites, the competition is ongoing!. ;-)
  17. Nasrul Hanis says:
I totally agree with your points - nobody will tell a blogger on what or when to do something! The most important thing to be considered is the self-discipline which is quite hard to be achieved but of course we can do it by changing our mindset from "blogging just as hobby" to "blogging as a profitable and amazing business"! And this is how we gain freedom by working from home!
  18. Mani Viswanathan says:
Its not just necessary to create a Schedule but also to inform others about the schedule. As you rightly said, we faced loads of distractions within our Working/Blogging hours which certainly has an impact.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
One really bad distraction for me is that my friends constantly ring me up. It doesn't matter what time it is, but they just love to chat. Sometimes I have to leave the phone off the hook just so I can't hear it ringing. They do not understand that I am working, as everyone I know goes out of the house to actually earn a living!
  19. Garen says:
Hey Matz, Very true, I am not a pro blogger or anything, but a full time affiliate marketer. Staying motivated is very important. I always make a list of what needs to be done each week, and then reward myself prior to completion. It really does help motivate you to work. For instance, you can get pretty relaxed when you make a couple thousand a week and become astrayed to work throughout the work week. My word of wisdom is blog about something you are passionate about! It goes hand and hand with affiliate marketing too :) Do what you love and never work a day in your life. Garen
    • Mitz Pantic says:
I have been a bit slack lately and this is one of the reasons I have written this post...It's to remind me to get back into it! Even when you are self disciplined you still need to kick yourself! And I guess the more money you make the more complacent you become...??
  20. Sabrina says:
I am a newbie blogger and I think that these are some great tips. I especially love when you discuss distractions. There are countless times when I can look back and I think about how I wasted time a online when I could have been working to improve my blog.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
If I had stopped wasting time sooner I would have been making money earlier and probably making more! Also having a bit of focus will help you in every aspect of your life...
  21. Alex says:
One of the hardest things to do is to convince your friends that you are actually working and not just sitting at your computer for leisure time. Some think that just because you work at home, you can be at their disposal any time of the day. An other great tip, is to partition your time in free, family and work time. Many don't know how to manage their time and they work too much, thus ignoring social life, which is worse then having a 9-5 job.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Your so right Alex! I use to get asked to go out, and say no because I was still working. Now I make sure I go out and it least a few times a week. There is one good thing about 9 to 5 job, you can leave your work at work! But that's the only good thing about it.
  22. Michael says:
Another super post and so on target! I know myself, I fight every day to make sure I follow the guidelines of making my blog my "job"! I know it is, but like you say, since its the internet, its so easy to take it for granted! Not anymore, OK I said it and I mean it this time! Thanks again for sharing! Michael CCO OutMaturity.com
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Go for it Michael! We all heard you say it!
  23. Morgan says:
Really detailed and awesome post! Thanks for this! Sometimes it can be easy to say all this but difficult to implement. But it's absolutely essential to take heed of this advice and really work towards managing your time so you can bring the most to your blog and your readers. Fantastic!
  24. Mavis Nong says:
Hi Mitz, What an awesome read! You're right, time management can be a real challenge when you work from home, with no specified hours of work and a boss to report to. These tips apply to any other home business really, not just blogging. The key is to implement them to create success. Thank you so much for sharing. All the best, Mavis
    • Mitz Pantic says:
I guess if you were a freelance writer or a virtual assistant you would need to do the same things. I never thought about anyone else!
  25. Andreas says:
Time management is an essential skill for every successful blogger, because a bad time membership can quickly exhaust and frustrate the blogger and may be the reason for an exit from the blogging business. Time management should start with setting a daily work schedule, then setting schedules for each task in advance.
  26. Shiva says:
Some great tips Mitz, It is really important to do proper time management specially if one works at home. Working at home can make people very lazy since they think that they can do the work whenever they like and start procrastinating but like you said, we need to treat our blogging like a profession/more like a full time job to become successful in it
    • Mitz Pantic says:
In this blogging game it is very easy to sit in your chair and put on weight. I had to not only make a timetable for my work, but add in some physical activities along the way. At a certain time of the day I go out and rake leaves and weed the garden, go back and blog, and then later I might go for a swim or do some housework.
  27. Wasim Ismail says:
Time management is extremely important and you have mentioned some good points and tips, being a blogger you are working for your self, and just like in any business, you have to be very strict with your time, as there will always be work there, not one day goes pass when you don’t have work when your self employed, so its extremely important to ensure that you give your self some personal time, time to spend with your family, your self, and also just to relax so that your refreshed and ready to go when you go back to work. Thanks for the article.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
When it all starts rolling, getting this balance is probably the hardest thing of all. I can set myself a schedule and beyond time with all my work, but I don't know when to stop. Sometimes I have to tear myself away and go out for the day. I think I neglected the personal time more than anything.
  28. Devesh says:
Great long depth article Mitz. These are awesome tips management tips. Thanks for sharing this great article.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Hi Devesh Thanks you for publishing my article on your website as well!
  29. ZK says:
If you want to enjoy your tomorrow than you will have to manage your today. This is what we can learn from this post. Simply awesome.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
That is my aim... To work for a few years and then sit back and let it snowball while I retire with a cocktail on some deserted island!
  30. Darren Scott Monroe says:
Mitz this was on point. The Info overload is a MAJOR assassin on time in an online entrepreneurs schedule and productivity
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Hi Darren Scott Info overload was one of my problems earlier on...I wanted to suck in all the information but later found I didn't need all of it. What a classic title to a post "Scratch Your Butt And Sniff Podcast"... Ha ha.. I had to go and check it out!!
  31. Renji says:
Never had a time management... will follow your tips now. :)
    • Mitz Pantic says:
You do not have to be too strict, it depends how bad you have been. LOL
  32. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Mitz, You can’t be successful without blog time management!! I have 2 closed friends who are big professional bloggers. They are 2 of the 5 biggest in Sweden, maybe number 1 and 2; they have 100% strict time management for everything what they do, including families and small kids. They booths say that they working harder and more strictly from home than from an office.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Hi Lennart, Yes this sounds right and it is just the way it has to be. I had to do this to because I love my job so much that I just wanted to do it all the time. However if I managed my time correctly and felt like I had done enough work in the day, I would feel good about doing other things. There are so many distractions on the Internet and sometimes you can work all day and feel like you have done nothing. This does not happen to me any more. I always feel like I have achieved something and do not have unfinished business on my mind.
  33. TJ McDowell says:
For me, blogging IS my reward for having my other work done. Running a small business, I can tell you that 9 to 5 never happens for us. It would be nice in some ways if it did, but on the other hand, we got into this business because we love it - so it's less like work and more like play for some of the stuff after hours.
    • Jack Harold says:
@ TJ McDowell, it is really gratifying when you see your blog buzzing with life. And you will know that all your efforts put in is all worthwhile!
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Hi TJ, I gave up my 9-to-5 business to do this blogging business, which turned out to be a hell of a lot of work! LOL But the difference is, even though I try to treat it like a real business and use my time efficiently, I have spent weeks when I have only worked one hour a day. There is no way that I could have done this in a real world 9-to-5 business. When I am working though, I guess I am pretty strict on myself, just to keep moving forward.

So did you wait until your blogging was making you enough income to decide to leave your 9-5?
        • Mitz Pantic says:
Yes I was making about $1,000 a month on the side for the first year blogging part-time, then it just kept growing until finally I did not want to go to work anymore because I had blogging on my mind. I started to hate my other business because it was taking me away from blogging.

That's how it worked with our photography stuff too. You know you're growing when you feel like your full-time is an inconvenience - not because you're a bad worker, but just because it means it's taking time from what you feel like you really should be doing. This happened to us twice - once for my wife's job, then as the studio continued to grow, it happened again with my job.

Honestly. I do not have a time management for blogging but I do a discipline time-line for several aspects of it such as blog commenting. I usually only do a hour or two blog commenting right after I publish a blog post which make sure that my content writing is not disturbed by the blog commenting activities.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Same here Dana Every time I write a new post I have a routine for it. I added the Twitter, Facebook, comment using comment Luv, submit a few simple articles pointing to it, and maybe a couple of other things. I know this sounds like a lot of stuff to do but it really kicks the article off and makes it a success. It brings in more traffic.

Hi there Terje, I think I might need to read my own post again because I feel like I have achieved nothing today! It is so much better when I stick to a schedule and get what I want done. LOL. unfortunately it's the really big jobs that make you feel like you're getting nowhere, but probably in reality you are.

Hey Mitz, really love your post as it massive explains my biggest problem, time. I will read it several time and take notes to make sure I remember all your good points on time management. Terje
    • Mitz Pantic says:
I still have a time problem but I am working on this as it makes everything else flow in your business and in life.
