Your Blog Sucks – The Ugly Truth about You and Your Precious Blog

January 26, 2012 - Last Modified: January 26, 2012 by Mitz Pantic

Blog Sucks

Do you want to hear the truth about your precious blog? I know this is hard to hear but I do not exactly want to tell you either.

Your blogs sucks! There I have said it!

Well not all blogs suck, but if you thought I was talking to you then maybe you really do think your blogs sucks?

I have been in this position, thinking my blog sucked, miserable, feeling like I was never going to get anywhere.

My precious blog didn’t suck, it was my attitude that was the problem.

It’s time to about-face

Before you decide that blogging is not right for you and go back to the 9 to 5 slog, give your blog one more month of undivided effort.

Turn your bad habits around and “pull your finger out”. (Ouch! Might be an Aussie saying only!)

Take the rose colored glasses off

Stop presuming you know what you are doing and open your eyes to the real story here! When people ask you if you are using search engine optimization on your blog, are you doing it your way, or the right way?

Stop interpreting blogging concepts upside down. Successful bloggers all over the Internet are sharing their secrets about how to make a successful blog, are you even listening?

If you’re wearing rose colored glasses, this is a hippie mentality. Stop smelling the roses and start planting them! Are you a smeller or a planter? (Don’t even imagine the weird image that comes to mind!)

Stop wasting time – Your blog sucks big time!

Stop stuffing around and write content, SEO it, and then promote it. Do that over and over until you realize that this is the only way to get success for your blog.

Spending too much time on other blogs, hanging out on social networking sites, chatting on Skype to potential JV partners, all can be massive time wasters! Get yourself disciplined and take note of these blog Time management tips. I would have to say that one of the hardest things about making a successful blog is actually sticking to your daily blogging routine. There are so many distractions on the Internet, you are going to need extra self discipline.

Stop whining – Excuses excuses!

Everyone is busy, everyone has a life, and everyone I know has the same amount of time available to them in a day. Wake up and realize that blogging is hard work and most people juggle family life, a full time job and blogging each and every day. Why are you so special?

Avoid writing or speaking these words:

  • I am bored (OMG, really?)
  • I can’t (Yep you should give up now! Just agreeing with you.)
  • I didn’t have time (Well stop wasting it!)
  • I don’t know how (I didn’t know how either!)
  • I didn’t do this because…(You are full of it!)
  • I wish I could do that! (You can if you take action and stop wishing!)
  • I am not as smart as you! (No you are just lazy! You do not need to be smart!)

I guess you get the picture! Are you on a mission to blog or just fluffing around?

Path to success

Get rid of your doubts now because people that are successful do not have time to doubt themselves. Even when people tell them that they are not going to succeed, they never listen. This is the first step to success, believing in yourself and never doubting that you will succeed.

Now that you know you will be successful you need to ask yourself these questions:

  • What is my goal for this blog? Money, love, fame?
  • What do I enjoy about this blog? If you enjoy nothing, pick another topic!
  • How can I improve my blog? Don’t ask anyone else, ask yourself! You know, but you are not looking properly.
  • If your goal is earning money, what products can I sell in this niche?

Take time to think about your path and write down your goals!

Turn your blog around – take action!

  1. Pretend this is your first day of blogging. Forget all the time you have wasted previously. Be happy that you have an already established blog to start with.
  2. Check out other successful blogs in your niche. What are they doing to attract the traffic? What is their content like?
  3. Go back and improve your content. Yes each and every piece. This is your best investment of time. See my tips to dominate Google search.
  4. Research and find the best keywords for each page or post you create.
  5. Build links to that content using the right keywords you have found. (this includes internal linking)
  6. Post great content often. This gets the blood flowing in your blog. Keep the momentum going!
  7. Follow one or two successful bloggers and stick to them. Not the ones spinning bull!

Are you still reading this article?

So now I know you do think your blog sucks and want to do something about it.

Okay so the truth about YOU is that your attitude is wrong. When you get your attitude in check, you will be able to focus and create a successful blog.

Did you think I was a bit harsh about the ugly truth about YOU and your precious blog?

"I wish I could do that!" - I don't know how many times I have that thought! But then I just let that thought slide away. I think it's time to take action now instead of wishing. Thank you for a 'reality check' post.
    • mitz says:
I hate it when people say that... but that is me... If I want to do something I keep trying until I have done it... So really I never fail... That is a good way to look at it..How can I fail if I never stop trying?
  2. Morgan Barnhart says:
Totally not harsh - I would say not harsh enough! ;) We can definitely feel attached to our blogs, especially if they're not pulling in the amount of visitors that we want. Consistency is key. Thanks for whipping us back to reality. ;)
  3. Dennis says:
Mitz I've never heard this before so in my book, you have just coined a phrase that is one to remember.. "Stop smelling the roses and start planting them!" That time management is key. You should have put a picture of your time management exel sheet that you use.. That thing is a lifesaver if put to use... Thanks for a great post.. Once again, got me on the right track..
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Ha ha! I just say those weird things to see if anyone is reading my posts! I also like to say "playing the piano at both ends" instead of "burning the candle at both ends" .. It really confuses people and makes them read it over and over. :)
  4. Bizz says:
Yep, it took me awhile to realize that five blog posts on a niche site and a bunch of spammy forum profile links wouldn't get me out of my J.O.B. So, now I slog it out on the keyboard and try to stay away from blogs, forums and social sites until I've gotten some REAL WORK done. It works if you work it...
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Yeah it is all hard work to build up a good business! If we keep going we will succeed! :)
  5. Nikoya says:
Someone needs a lesson of non-violent communication!! Just kidding! I love the directness in this post. Something that I'm glad I stumbled on tonight. You hit a chord with me when you said to stop wasting time reading spinned Junk. It's so much of it around these days it's hard to avoid. It's best to follow 1-2 credible bloggers that resonate with you (and are successful) and keep creating your own works.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
To tell the truth.. A lot or articles about blogging repeat themselves on each site so it is better to follow one or two like you said. Even my site has some info others have but with my twist on things. :)
  6. Kunal says:
This post can inspire even a death blogger :) Well I have had a bad time blogging but I never gave up. Making excuse is the worse part of all. Beautiful piece of writing.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
That is a great achievement, not giving up, as it is a hard road. People study for years to become qualified at something so it does take time for this too..

  8. tonygreene113 says:
Thanks for getting me off of my duff. Now I can maximize the ugliness of my site for all of Google's iterations and algorithm cheeziness.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
LOL You sound so excited about it too!
      • tonygreene113 says:
Oh, I'm stoked, especially since my organic numbers are up immensely.
  9. Jane says:
Blogging is a never ending process. If we go back and check the quality of posts (down the line - one or two years) as per the current standards, we can really understand and trace our pitfalls. In spite of those drawbacks, you are able to move forward. This shows that there is great possibility for greater success by inspecting the pitfalls at the moment.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Yes you are right Jane! Blogging is a never ending process and moving forward after failing is the best way success! :)
  10. doug_eike says:
I agree with you about the desireability of creating and promoting good content. The problem is that when bloggers observe other sites, some of which are mostly inactive, they sometimes see Google page ranks and Alexa rankings that seem out of proportion to the sites' activities. This throws the bloggers off track, because it gives the impression that linking is more important than content creation. I am personally aware of several older sites that maintain high rankings but that do not update content at all. For someone who would like to see a world where content counts, this is a frustrating observation. Thanks for the insights!

I agree with you about the desireability of creating and promoting good content. The problem is that when bloggers observe other sites, some of which are mostly inactive, they sometimes see Google page ranks and Alexa rankings that seem out of proportion to the sites’ activities - no truer words have been said.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
I totally agree that Alex ranking is deceiving. Here is an example: I have a website getting 14,000 uniques a day and has Alexa 35,000 while another site I have, Alexa 21,000 only gets 2,000 a day at the most! How can that tell you anything?
  11. Brad says:
Yes, keep on trying or fail.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Yes fail fail fail and then if you are still going you will succeed. :)
  12. Mandy Kilinskis says:
You're absolutely right, Mitz. You can network like a boss all over the internet, but if you don't have an outstanding blog with outstanding content, it won't do you any good. Tackling the evil distractions of the internet is key in succeeding as a blogger, but definitely take the time out to study the greats (as Ryan said) and read their valuable tips! They've made it for a reason, so their advice is valuable! Thanks for a kick in the butt post - we all need them from time to time.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Sometimes I write these posts for myself.. It actually made me go out and get a site evaluation.. And I thought the site I was getting evaluated was perfect..(in my eyes) The evaluator picked it to death!!! :)
  13. Jamie Northrup says:
If your blog does suck and you can't admit it to yourself, then you will waste a lot of your time . There's no shame in having a sucky blog, I actually see it as a good thing because you can improve it and get better results. If you don't think your blog sucks, then it's a lot harder to improve. No matter how good a website is, with the rapid changes in our world, there's always a way to improve it.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
I agree that if you are in LA LA LAND about your blog then you will never stop it from sucking! :)
  14. Prithvi says:
God.. that was truly amazing.. well, i don't actually think that my blog sucks big time, but still, your tips were really helpful. Will try to implement them in the further steps i am gonna take to improve my blog. Thanks a lot for sharing.. :)
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Good one! Take action! I love that! :)
  15. Geoff Vincent says:
Thanks for the "kick in the ass" blog. I needed it today as I ponder what (and why) I need to blog. Also, your daily blogging routine is an excellent template and insight. Thanks for that too!
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Yes the blogging routine was true and most of the time it is...But when it is school holidays it is almost impossible to get any work done with children around the house.. Writing takes a lot of concentration! :)
  16. Lewis Newton says:
My Blog Suck? It can only be called SUCK if you do not get a revenue on it.... But I think working hard or marketing your blog to make it popular maybe it will make your Blog Great!....
    • Mitz Pantic says:
I agree that you can turn a blog that SUCKS into a massive money maker! :)
      • Lewis Newton says:
Yeah! by way of getting a themes that can help you monetize your blogs or even stuffing Unique and Informative content into it regarding the services or product you promote...
    • tonygreene113 says:
I gets money!! And tons of traffic looking for hating on sites like mine.
  17. Ahmad Wali says:
You emphasized on "Your Blog Suck" too much that I had to look at my blogs twice :D... IMO, the most important thing for most bloggers is "inconsistency". You need to put your effort day to day otherwise as MITZ said "Your Blog Sucks" ;)
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Oh it sounds like I made you paranoid! I checked out your blog and it definitely does not suck! You are right about being consistent...blogging is very demanding! :)
  18. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Mitz, Super advice here. The best bloggers - and people from any industry - are 100% honest with themselves. Brutally honest, really. You must remain high energy and enthusiastic, but you also need to look at your blog as objectively as possible. Do not hesitate to ask for feedback. If you neglect doing this, I can also guarantee your learning curve will be in the months and years, instead of in the days and weeks. Seriously, getting honest feedback can make your job much easier. Simply put your ego aside and be open to suggestion. Most people really want to help you. Some might state in a a-hole like way - just being real ;) - but most will be super supportive, caring and simply wanting to see you succeed, so they will offer high energy feedback. Study the greats. See what they do. Put your twist on it. By mimicking the top bloggers without copying them, you can do some really neat things yourself. Persist like heck too. I learn this more each day. When I stick to proven principles through thick and thin, like writing helpful, keyword-rich posts, I do well. When I move away from these proven strategies I don't acquire as many readers or social shares. Stay super consistent and good things happen. Don't abandon a strategy before you give it a chance to work. I am writing 1 to 5 posts a day on my current blogs - yep, 2 of them - because my goal is to boost my SEO, and create like hell. So far, so good. The key is that I am not forcing it. Virtually all posts are keyword optimized and I am writing from a place of calm confidence. I do not worry about letting my posts sit, but I do promote the posts aggressively while I promote other's posts. I am enjoying the heck out of the strategy too, and prospering as well, which means I am on the right track. Thanks for sharing your insight Mitz. Ryan
    • Mitz Pantic says:
WOW Ryan It sounds like you have an even bigger plan than me.. I like the way you have said that you are writing from a place of calm confidence. This is really cool because often people make things unpleasant for themselves by thinking negative thoughts. Its like when I wash my car. I used to hate it and think "oh no I have to wash the car" but now I think "oh imagine how good the car will look if I wash it". Then I am happy to wash the car.
  19. Shamelle says:
Over the years I’ve been blogging (from way back in ’04), I’ve also be a champion for the act of blogging, the habits of blogging, the upsides of grammar and writing skills and storytelling in blogging. I’ve seen quite a few friends jump on the bandwagon with varying levels of interest and longevity. It’s not a bad thing. You try something, you give it a shot – and it’s just not your thing. My advice: move on. Next. But... you’d still like to blog, still like to do it well, still want to make some changes to pick up your blog for your readers and, more importantly, for yourself, then take some time to learn and read and watch others do it well. Learn from their good habits, and take in their ideas.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Well said Shamelle! I agree that people can move on but if they really want to stick at it, keep learning until they get it! There are so many great bloggers to learn from. :)
  20. Ahmad says:
I know, my blog sucks. Thats why I am reading other people blogs to understand what wrong with my blog and improve my SEO knowledge. I had done a big mistake last year and will try to correct them now.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Well if you see your mistakes now and fox them you will be fine. We have all made mistakes. I have even deleted an entire blog when I first started out!
  21. Abhi Balani says:
Hey, Mitz! Nice to see you here to. I think, my blog DON'T sucks. DO you think so? oddblogger . com let me know.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
I think your blog is great Abhi! I especially love your theme. I love the rainbow colors at the tops! :)
      • Abhi Balani says:
Ohh, really? That's really good for me. You like my blog :-). Happy. I hope you are honest with your opinion. lol, kidding. Thanks
