How to use WordPress.com Features in Self Hosted Blogs

March 18, 2011 - Last Modified: March 24, 2011 by Hesham Zebida

JetPack WordPress Plugin

A couple of days back, I noticed that my WordPress.com stats plugin was not working, and I really like that plugin. I am using it to check all blogs stats from inside the WordPress dashboard, and it’s not making any load on the server as it’s hosted byAutomattic. It’s really useful stats system.

Usually, if there is a problem in Automattic’s stats system, they solve it on the same day or at the latest, the next day! So,I searched for a solution for the problem trying to it make work again. I discovered that all my sites were dropped from the system!

Now WHAT?!

After looking around, I found out that there is a new plugin called Jet Pack which is powered by WordPress.com, and it allows you to use the Automattic stats system for self hosted blogs and much more!

Find out all about it in WordPress.com blog.

This is my favorite one, because I want to see this:

You can use other features like:

  • WordPress.com Stats
  • Twitter Widget
  • Gravatar Hovercards
  • WP.me Shortlinks
  • Sharedaddy
  • LaTeX
  • After the Deadline
  • Shortcode Embeds

The good news is those features area available for free, but it seems that there are some other premium features on the way!

JetPAck plugin is Amazing!

It’s really nice to use the WordPress.com Stats in a different way. If you have a WordPress.com blog, you will know what I mean! Oh! It requires an account on WordPress.com; you must get one to enable the plugin. Check out Jetpack!

Enjoy!

I had Jetpack installed and was enjoying it, but today ran some speed tests and the stats part cause the page to fail to load. I liked the offerings of Jetpack but not that it is a case of all or nothing, so it had to be deactivated.

Hi Hesham,If WP state plugin not working then make sure that you didn't lose wp_footer function from your footer by accident. Regarding Jetpack, I see it on my new blog but didn't check what it can do. Thank you for sharing. ;)
  3. Sonia says:
Jet Pack is great. The same thing happened to me and it was suggested to check out Jet Pack. I haven't looked back and haven't had any problems. I wish I saw this post before hand, but glad I know about it now! Thanks Hesham!

Hey Hesham, I’ve been reading about Jet Pack all over the web and your post was the only one that convinced me to give the plugin a try. Jet Pack sure does a lot! But I still like Google Analytics. I think it provides more information.
    • Hesham says:
I agree , and I use them both!
  5. Jan Husdal says:
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately the plugin refused to connect with wordpress.com when In tried to activate it, and I couldn't figure out why. Maybe it's a theme issue, or maybe aWordPress issue. In any case, I downloaded the plugins one by one, and that works...hmm.
    • Hesham says:
mmm.. bad connection happen, but it should work if you try to connect again!
      • Jan Husdal says:
Nah...must be a theme issue, since I'm using Atahualpa, an dhwen I tried a new and fresh WP Jetpack install on another directory using the default theme it went ok. Well, could be incompatible plugins also, but I haven't checked that yet.

Hey Hesham, I did try out Jetpack. It has awesome features but my site slowed down ever since I activated it. I don't really know whether that's the reason (Maybe I have to check with Hostgator, since it has been showing message regarding server error (the usual apache page). Thank you for the info, Hesham Jeevan Jacob John
    • Hesham says:
It should't slow your site as t runs on Automattic's servers! Anyways, I hope you are not using a lot of plugins on the blog!

Although I don't prefer seeing stats using the WP Stats plugin, because their algo is way diff. from Analytics. But as you mentioned it is a collection of many plugins like Hovercard gravatars, Twitter Widget, etc. So will give it a try.

Hi Hesham I have never heard about Jetpack before so thank you for sharing. I am using Google Analytics for stats and I think it can do every think I need for stats. I can see that Jetpack is a lot more than just stats, so maybe I will take a look at it anyway.
    • Hesham says:
Yes Thomas, the Jetpack dose a lot more than that, but I took what I need from it! If you had a chance to try WordPress.com stats, you would probably change your mind about using Analytics only! And by the way I use Analytics as well, but I rarely open it, once or twice a month!
  16. Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:

Hi Hesham, Its really nice to read your post on WP features. Between i am a die hard fan of Microsoft Technologies and running my blog on #blogEngine, a ASP.Net blog. But the features you mentioned in the post are truly awesome and there are lots of similar tools are there in the marked which lead WP far better than any other blog.
    • Hesham says:
WordPress is the most popular blogging platform and the biggest support community, so you really don't need to know PHP to start using it, and I highly recommend you move to WP or at lease try it on one of your coming projects!
  19. David says:
Yeah. I just started to set up a new blog a few hours ago, and it was in the bundle of plugins installed with WP, and I became an instant fan. All the things I missed since the days I used wordpress.com are in it.
    • Wayne says:
Yeah, they've pre-packaged it with the latest release. I find that I only wanted the Gravatar Hovercards. I'm find going to another site for my analytics, and the other stuff I don't find really useful.
      • Hesham says:
Yeah, it seems that everyone will find something useful in this collection!
