What Does an Ideal Customer for Your Business Look Like?

October 29, 2011 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Obaidul Haque

Ideal Customer

The key to developing a successful marketing strategy is identifying your target market. Even when you have created a great product, it’s not going to appeal to everyone. Not everyone in this world is interested in your product. So, you need to sell your product to the right customer! That’s why it’s important to know what an ideal customer for your business looks like.

An ideal customer for your business may be specific industry employees, college students, doctors, single mothers, retirees, newly married couples, holiday-makers etc. Unless you know who the right customer is to sell your product to, you can never expect to grow your business.

Knowing your Customers

Here are a few questions that you need to answer in order to identify the customer who’ll be most interested in your product.

  • Who do you love working with the most?
  • What customer experiences make you jump out of bed?
  • Who are your repeat customers?
  • Who is in love with your product?

Yes, an ideal customer for your business is the one who you really enjoy working with. An ideal customer continues to motivate you. An ideal customer is one who has found an effective solution to their problems in your product. An ideal customer doesn’t only purchase your product, but they are really passionate about using it. In a nutshell, an ideal customer for your business is the one who can’t simply live without your product.

Whether it’s about the development of a product, planning out the customer service or developing a marketing strategy, identifying the ideal customer for your business is the first vital step. When you are completely aware of the characteristics of your ideal customer, you will be able to craft a marketing message that hits the nail right on its head.

Why do most businesses fail? They fail simply because they are not familiar with the ideal customer profile. As a matter of fact, every employee in your organization should have a clear understanding of the ideal customer’s characteristics, requirements and expectations.

In order to define your ideal customer, you need to be familiar with their social, emotional and physical characteristics. Social characteristics of a customer include income level, educational qualification, job title, geographical location etc. Emotional traits include their hobbies, values, goals, fears, problems etc. Physical characteristics will include essentials like age and gender among others. So, you can start making a list of all the customers you cater to. And then, you can go on to find out your ideal customers and their traits.

Yes, it requires extensive research, time and energy to write out the profile of your ideal customer. But it’s a surefire way of offering your product to people who really need it. If you are successful in attracting the right kind of customers, you can easily beat out the competition and elevate your business to the next level.

Who’s your ideal customer? Please feel free to share your views, comments and customer experiences in the comment section below.

Obaidul, I love your post about your ideal customers. Mine has something to do with payment. Just kidding, I appreciate a customer that can ask quickly before and after doing business. Locations doesn't really matter to me as long as I can fill their thirst for knowledge. Btw, I agree with Susan. Thanks, Cris

Hehe, an ideal customer is something rare, it's very important to recognize an ideal customer when you see one. In my opinion, an ideal customer is someone who understands the effort you are making with your business and what is your business exactly doing. An ideal customer knows exactly what he has to do - give correct and detailed info, pay his fee(s) at the right time and talks nice. I have ideal customers but they are only a few from a whole bunch of customers.

My ideal customer is someone I can help, I can bring them where they need to be. Being a web consultant, it's also important to make it within their budget, no matter if the customer has a small or big one, I try to bring it to them under budget, and often times they are happy, a happy customer is the ideal customer as they will not only return but spread the word. Someone who's willing to work with you is also much easier to work with than someone who hires you and expects not to be involved.

Obaidal, Well said. It takes time to really figure out what your average customer/reader is. But once you figure that information out is is just about an invaluable tool. -Steve

Spot On. until and unless you do not know what your customers want or what are they looking for, there is no use of making tireless efforts because the results that they will fetch won't be upto the mark.

Most marketers online try to sell product/service to all instead of using laser targeting techniques. Ii have to agree with you Obaidul... it requires extensive research, time and energy to find the target market but it is more cost efficient and more profitable in the long run.

Obaidul, Great post. Most small business owners do not understand the value of understanding who their ideal customers are and how to market directly to their ideal customers. Many small businesses want to blindly believe that all customers are ideal customers but this is just not the case. They do not realize how much more time and cost effective it would be if they identified their ideal customers and created buyer personas for them. Happy blogging, Jenn

Thanks for stressing the point, Jennifer.

Apart from knowing who your customers are I believe that a business should find ways of being close to its customers. One way of doing so it by having a Facebook page. Nowadays everyone is on Facebook, which means that even your customers are there. It is also an excellent way of tapping into important demographic information which comes at zero cost at all.
  12. Susan Saldibar says:
Obaidul, great article. One of the keys to an ideal customer is a personality match. I can recall during my tenure with a high tech software vendor as VP/Marketing, one of our star sales reps, developed some strong relationships with customers, in particular, with a few individuals who were in love with what the technology could do. While these guys weren't the ones who signed the checks, they were great influencers and would regularly talk with their peers, some of whom pulled through some additional business. So, matching the personalities can be tricky but greatly rewarding. Thanks for the article.
    • Obaidul Haque says:
Thanks for sharing your experience, Susan. That's right. An ideal customer is so passionately in love with your product that they are always eager to recommend it to others. They are the real advocators of your brand.
