Can I Still Trust Google?!

April 19, 2012 - Last Modified: December 24, 2012 by Hesham Zebida

Can I Trust Google

“Don’t be evil.” Google’s unofficial corporate motto was originally adopted as company-wide belief as well as a jab to its competitors. However, Google has come a long way since it was incorporated in 1998. Can we still trust Google to do no evil? There is increasing evidence to suggest that the answer is ‘no’.

Google is very powerful and currently the largest company on the web. They are in control. Oh yes. That is why it is not wise to rely fully on them to bring business.
  2. Astro Gremlin says:
Why can't Google be like Wikipedia? Because they have to grow profits. Interesting that the company recognized the potential for evil early on. The temptation grows with time. Precious, precious.
  3. Thomas Brewer says:
Really good question. If you are a conspiracy theorist after Penguin you could certainly say probably not. The uptick in large brands after this algo change does make you think a little. I do not know that I would ever trust a large corporation entirely.
  4. Eapen says:
Thanks for the clear and valuable infographics Hesham. I think Google's trustworthiness and dependability has phenomenally spiraled down further especially after the recent Web Spam Algo - Penguin. I am getting crappy results on the first page. Google's monopoly must end.
  5. Micah says:
I wouldn't trust Google any more than I would trust any other mega corporation. They are about two things and two things only. Profit and power. That's the ways it's always been and the way it always will be. I don't know why people are always so surprised at Google. They are just providing a useful service that promotes their own agenda.
  6. Ryan says:
We Love to hate it but can't live without it. Google truely is one of thoses kind of things as much as we say we hate them, they still get used by the mass market and still provide a solid income to alot of people online. So can we trust them, probably not but I will continue to use them anyway.
  7. Rajnish says:
After My Adsense Account Gone Suspended and my Blogger Blog which was 3 Year Old gone Deleted for no reason its hard for me to trust on Google Anymore.
  8. sreekanth says:
i trust google over any other competitors it is having, it is the Big Daddy, everyone follows it. Its most reliable on internet
  9. Tarun says:
I read a book about psychology that talked about suggestions (not suggestion as in proposal but the psychological term). It said that the human mind doesn’t understand negations. If I tell you “Do NOT think about a blue elephant” you have to visualize the blue elephant before you can elimitae it from your thoughts. This is why negations should never be used in slogans, as they’re talking to our subconcious. So when Google says “don’t be evil” our primitive part of our brains hears “be evil”. I find it weird that a company would even use a strong, negative word like that in their slogan.
  10. Chikara says:
I trust Google as much as I trust any other multinationals. Actually, a bit more than most. Besides, people were crazy to assume they had some sort of 'social contract' with Google. They're in the business of making money.
  11. Lucian Apostol says:
I don't believe in conspiracy theories. I don't like Facebook, Apple, and especially I don't like big companies. However, I trust google more then any big company.
  12. Charles Daniels says:
In another ten years everything and anything will be Google. When you start getting into the patents they are registering (Which seem endless) their reach goes into almost all areas. Soon you will connect you Google computer to your Google phone to activate your Google in home network to watch your Google television...and don't worry, because your Google car will be driving you to and from work every day on auto-pilot. That's a lot of power. And power corrupts, right?
  13. Krishna says:
Its the confirmed fact that Google has already occupied 65% of World Wide Web, so now we can't trust Google as he is behaving like an boss, by becoming neck-pain for web masters. This is all what I can describe :P
  14. Saket Jajodia says:
Google has covered almost every part of the internet that it becomes almost impossible to live without using any of its services.. E.g.: You will see AdSense ads and Google Analytics on almost ever blog or website you visit. BTW Thanks Hesham for this infograpgic..!! :)
  15. Sam says:
Wonderful infographic, thanks for sharing and so true all the points! If it were other alternatives I’d like to use it, but they have good products, interesting infographic, We have no option left, we cant trust Google any more still we will use it.
  16. John Cooper says:
Totally agree! It is too bad that Google has gain so much power and now many people are just wondering how can they stop relying on them. I took some steps… I made Yahoo my homepage, I started to Bing it! and I will be deleting Google chrome. The hardest step is stop using Gmail I am so use to it now it is so sad LOL I did get a Yahoo email account though. I must say I kind of like their homepage better since you see the latest news etc. Anyways it seems that more and more people are leaning towards stopping to use many of the Google products. Also many webmasters are breaking up with them and not relying on them for traffic.
  17. Jim Antoine says:
I believe that google as a large corporation can do anything for profit. The fact that it is a company with so much power is terrifying. It could become a monopoly and devour us all. But is it all true? Don't WE ask for trouble by ourselves? When you,me,them post all their vacation photos on the web? When some people say where they are, what they do, with whom they do it, isn't this dangerous? Has google ever said that you should do it or else.. Or else what? What? Exactly as Southpark's Randy said in an episode... We must be careful for ourselves! Google might be good or bad. We shouldn't give so much info about us... Thank you!
  18. Ray says:
Personally I am not so fond of Google as I was a number of years ago. Most of the privacy policies and terms of services you can't even make any sense of or understand them. Who really knows what they are doing with all the info they gather, and of course it's not just Google.
  19. Gera says:
Fascinating infographic and so true all the points! If it were other alternatives I'd like to use it, but they have good products (in general) About tracking - I don’t like it. I delete my web story ;-) Really monopolies aren’t good for the consumer and G has become in one.. :( Cheers, Gera
    • Rashmi Sinha says:
You are right that Google has a monopoly in a large part of the internet and this is not good for anything. But i think that such a big company has to follow some rules and if it doesn't they will be the first to be punished. You can't punish Google with money, but with dropping it's popularity. They don't like it, believe me.
  20. Elin says:

  21. Nick Stamoulis says:
Great infographic. Most Google users know that their behavior is being tracked on some level. Some don't care while others are concerned about their privacy. Even Google privacy policies can be somewhat vague. The only way to not be tracked is simply to not use Google products, which is hard to do since Google products are so helpful and part of our everyday lives. Google knows that it has us.
  22. Wallace Bjornson says:
Nice post! infographic seems very interesting, I’ve been always skeptic with the security and privacy of the web, and I don’t trust Google completely as well. But, unfortunately, there isn’t any option left, thanks for sharing this informative blog, I'll definitely use this.
  23. jaka gada says:
i do a gree about that, still many victim-evil in go+gle i am newbie and learn more here..thanks for share..
  24. Steve says:
Hesham, I am certainly on the side of not totally trusting them. I have dealt with them long enough to know they certainly have their own agenda and it comes first. Love the Infographic! Steve
  25. Riten Jain says:
i would definitively not trust Google, Its all about making profit from your business and Google is giant and smart in making money from their services.
  26. Joe Boyle says:
Great infographic. I think Google is the higher power of the web - and it probably always will be. Very few know the evil that Google possesses, and it's quiet sick. When you search something into Google, and see advertisements for products you want, in your area, you know something is up. They not only follow the trends of your searches, but the location you're in. So they can make major dollars off of the results they are tracking from YOU. I think it goes back to 1984 - Big Brother is Watching You. Google is the Big Brother of the internet. Always has been, and probably always will.
  27. Azam says:
Yes we can always trust Google if we have some proficiency to know how the Google work. If we do not annoy Google,it is one of the best online friend.
  28. Andrea says:
Nice post! I've been always sceptic with the privacy of the web, and I don't trust Google as well. But, unfortunately, there isn't any alternative or secure way (except living an offline life, but who could do this?) By the way, I really like your infographic!
  29. JamesW says:
hmm... interesting infographic, still even if we cant trust Google any more I need to use him, because he's the biggest search engine and the strongest player in this online world. But we can keep raising our voice in order to get some things changed about our privacy on the web and out searches. thanks for sharing this great infographic Hesham
  30. Anton Koekemoer says:
Excellent post and topic - In my opinion , I wouldn't trust Google with anything I wont trust my next door neighbour with. Business is Business - And the main objective of any Business is to make a profit. Great post once again - Thanks for sharing.
  31. Morgan says:
We can say the same thing about any network, browser or what-have-you that is on the internet. Nothing is truly secure or private, no matter how much we want to believe it is. But I can't live my life in fear, especially when there are more benefits than negatives. :)
    • Trung Nguyen says:
Total agree with you, we should only trust ourselves
  32. Bishwajeet says:
It's better to build a business without help of Google at first and then lookout for google to expand it.
  33. Danijela says:
Well, this is really disturbing. Even though we all know few of these things, when you put them all together it's just too much. Still, I am glad I have all these information now. :)
  34. Rashmi Sinha says:
If you can't trust Google, you can't trust anyone. The right thing is to trust noone but you can't do that in the Internet. As in real life, you will be alone if you don't trust anyone. That's what i think.
  35. Jacko says:
wow. its a crazy world. Do you think they sell the data? Has there ever been a large data theft from Google?
  36. Jack Sander says:
The online environment is changing continuously, therefore Google has to keep up with the competition. Taking into account that Facebook is gaining significant ground, I think that Google had to make these changes to remain competitive. Even it might have drawbacks for our privacy, I perfectly understand their reasons.
  37. Jeremy says:
I think their don't be evil slogan makes me trust them less. When a company tries to reinforce something like that, it just seems suspicious. Google just has far too much information about people. Plus they have a history of overstepping what they're allowed to do. With such a huge company with such a focus on profit, it is very tough to truly trust them.
  38. Alex says:
Google became our "Big Brother" and I am against that. Great tips I will definitely use these methods to cut back how much Google tracks my activity.
  39. Mahesh Mohan says:
I hate personalized search... They should really give an option to opt out of it... The only option is to disable web history which I dont want to do... and the other option (which am using) is adding "&pws=0" at the end of the results URL... you can create a custom search engine and use this method....
  40. Nishadha says:
I don't think you can ever completely trust any service that collects your personal information. But you have to admit that there are benefits to that as well. Personalized search , more targeted advertisements etc. I guess it is a trade off we have to make to enjoy the amazing free services Google offers us.
