Marketing Your eBook as an Audiobook

May 18, 2011 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Morgan Barnhart

We are a society of “GO GO GO.” People want their information NOW, and they want it in any format they so choose. This is especially applicable to the internet realm, including your eBooks.

Options

Think about the publishing industry. They offer hardback, paperback, electronic and audiobook versions. Sure, they don’t all come out at once, but the public knows that one of those formats will be available at any given time. So, if they don’t like the hardback version, they can wait for the paperback version. If they don’t want a physical copy at all, they’ll simply wait for the audiobook version and so on.

Just like in blogging, where we can either write a blog post, embed a video, or create a podcast, we need to shake things up with our eBooks.

Don’t get me wrong, I love eBooks! I love that I can just download it and read it on my Kindle, iPad, Nook, computer, or smart phone. However, sometimes I’d really love to be able to listen to it, instead of read it.

Listen Wherever

I can retain information better if I hear something, rather than read it or vise versa, which is one of the reasons why when bloggers post up a podcast, they also translate it for those who don’t want to listen and have the time to read.

So why haven’t we turned our eBook’s into audiobooks?

Why don’t we give our fans and potential clients the option to HEAR it as well as read it?

Of course, I don’t expect you to adhere to every whim of the customer’s voice. However, in this type of scenario, it would be a wise move to give them more options to hear your invaluable advice.

Think about how popular music is. You could be tapping into the market of people who have their headphones constantly attached their ears.

For instance, here are a few ways we can listen:

listen to audio books on mobileWhile I’m doing homework

cleaning the house

on a road trip,

to and from work

jogging

and so on.

The amount of time that I have to listen is drastically higher than the amount of time that I have to read. Not to mention, in audiobook format, you can now offer it on iTunes, which has a huge market.

So when thinking about your eBook, treat it as any other marketing technique and offer it in audio format to reach an even larger audience.

Also, I practice what I preach. Here’s the audio version of this blog post:

I am a huge advocate of podcasting, and I listen to them constantly throughout the day on my Android smartphone. While I don't listen to many audiobooks, the idea of creating audio versions of your blog posts is appealing to me. It might not be practical for many people (particularly those without a decent audio recording setup in their office or home... not to mention those without a particularly listenable vocal style) to record readings of every little blog post. But the idea of having a weekly (or bi-weekly, monthly, whatever) podcast which features like a "best of" collection of posts from your site, reader email, a little intro, etc sounds like a great idea for any blog or website with a moderate readership.

Hi Greg, Acquiring the audio setup isn't all that difficult. :) A Logitech microphone, Audacity and a quiet space is really all you need to get started. It can be a lot of work to turn each blog into its own podcast, but in the end, it gives your readers more options and allows them to look forward to daily (or however much you blog) podcast with your latest blog, through iTunes. I do like the idea of a 'best of' collection, though! It can bring more readers in by enticing them with what you've got at your blog. Thank you for reading! Good luck with your podcasting!

Morgan, This is a great idea. I'm am an avid "reader" when I exercise and have turned my car into "AudioBook University". I know a lot of people who love to learn on the go, whenever it fits into their busy lifestyles. This is a great idea. I think that we all know that variety is the spice of life online. Reproducing your content in multiple forms is a great way to capture people that you would not have reached otherwise, and communicate with them in the way that they are comfortable. Thumbs up for this idea!
    • Morgan says:
Hi Tiffany! You got it! Variety will help bring in far more people. It helps spread the word to people who may not have found your website/service/product except by that certain medium. It's important to be broad when thinking about how to reach people and try as many avenues as possible. Thanks so much for reading! :)

Great thought Morgan. I'd love to know more about programs that help to do this. I mean, creating high quality audio files of the ebook read out :) Cheers, Jane.

Morgan, Great way to touch another market with your blog. How long does it take to do your podcast? Thx for your post. Tom
    • Morgan says:
Hi Tom, It really is a great additional options to your eBook. It depends on the word count and if it's a novel size eBook, it could take up to 1 month to complete the audiobook. But usually about 1-2 weeks. Thank you for reading! --Morgan

Hi Morgan, Creative idea here. Re-purposing helps leverage your presence. Some like to read content, some like to listen. Why not cater to as many audiences as possible by using a strategy like you mention? Thanks for sharing. Ryan
    • Morgan says:
Hi Ryan, Exactly! Catering to as many audiences as possible is just one benefit. If you have a podcast or turn your eBook into an audiobook, it can then be available through iTunes, which is a HUGE market place. Thank you for reading! --Morgan
  6. Gera says:
Hi Morgan, I'm working slowly on that direction for having multiple mediums and this post is perfect. Anyway I'm more read than listen - but I know other people are the opposite! My works to jump to it, today are -> first newsletter and then audio and video :) Cheers, Gera
    • Morgan says:
Hi Gera, I like that you have a strategy! Audio and video might be your most powerful marketing tools, though, since they can be placed on high traffic websites such as iTunes, Youtube, Vimeo, etc. Good luck! Thanks for reading. --Morgan
  7. Steve says:
Morgan,This is a great idea. Offering multiple versions is (Ebook, podcast, Video) allows your readers to get whatever they desire. Is all about giving a maximum value maximum ways to find and get your work. Is a great idea and very customer-service oriented.
    • Morgan says:
Hi Steve, Thank you! Yes, I agree with you that it's important to add value by maximizing how customers can find your content. There are soooo many eBook's, and I know if I came across a website that offered their eBook into audio format, I'd snatch that baby up a lot quicker. :) Thank you for reading!! --Morgan
