Podcasts – The Underestimated Traffic Source!

March 23, 2011 - Last Modified: March 23, 2011 by Wong Chendong

Podcasts

If you snoop around the web, you’ll learn that a podcast is a series of audio or video files that are published periodically to be watched or listened to on personal computers.

That’s the definition, but how are podcasts helpful to you as a blogger?

  • Great For Building Up Your Reputation

There used to be a time where people could gain instant expert status if they went ahead and took the time to write a simple ebook.

Now that everyone online has some type of book published, that’s not necessarily the case anymore, but…

…if you have a podcast, people will still consider you to be a top notch expert pretty much automatically.

  • Great To Present Content

Some people learn through reading, others digest information best through watching videos or listening to audios – that’s just a fact.

We’re all different.

So, if you want to reach a great number of people and have your message spread wildly online, you have to not only write books but also publish digital media in the form of podcasts (be it video or audio, it doesn’t matter).

Awesome For Traffic

podcasts bloggers

And that’s what I want to focus on in this post.

Having your own podcast will get you a steady flow of traffic if you do it right, but being a guest on a popular podcast can literally flood you with visitors.

How?

Get this: let’s say there’s a podcast that gets 100,000 visitors each and every week that download the file and consume the content.

Let’s say you’re the guest speaker on one or more of their episodes.

That’s anywhere from 50,000 – 75,000 hits to your site almost overnight.

Do you think you could do some serious damage with that kind of traffic? Of course you could!

Now, let’s talk about how to get on the best, most influential podcasts in your niche that will get you all the traffic you can take with complete ease, OK?

1 – Become An Expert

The best podcasts out there want to interview experts, because they’ll provide valuable information, tips, techniques, and strategies to their listeners or viewers.

If you want to get on a lot of those digital broadcasts, you absolutely have to know what you’re talking about before you even think about approaching any broadcasters.

2 – Establish Some Connections

If you’ve been in your niche for any amount of time and you’ve been somewhat friendly to people, chances are that you have a few email addresses or phone numbers of friends in your niche that would help you if you asked them. Go ahead and email them (or call them if you can) to ask if they know someone who has an active podcast they’d need a guest speaker on.

It’s easier than you think!

3 – Do Stuff For People

It’s a proven fact that if you’re nice to people, they’re nice to you, so go ahead and help as many influential people in your market as you can. It’s a good idea to do things for them and help them as much as you can completely free, because then they’ll perceive you as someone who’s just a cool guy (or gal) which is always a good thing in business.

People will do all kinds of stuff for you, if they like you.

Fiverr.com

Now that we got all that out of the way, let’s talk about a “Top Secret”, unknown and, most importantly, never ending source of people who will ask you to be on their podcasts for next to nothing.

That place is called Fiverr.com, and it’s a community of people that will do stuff for you for $5.

Awesome place!

You’ll get interviewed for $5, and you know they’re not doing it for the money, they just really need to provide content to their “fan base” and they know that you’ll do it for them.

Cool, isn’t it?

I’ve used this site many times for my affiliate niches and it works like gangbusters!

So, the question for today is:

Do you have a favorite podcast you listen to, and why do you like it?

  2. Alex says:
Wong, Just going through all the contest entries now and I totally LOVE this post. Not only have you given some tangible reasons why you should podcast, you have given some great tips on how to go about it. Heading to Fiverr now. Nice out of the box thinking. You Bad Blogger you
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Thanks for loving my post, and commenting, letting me know about it and I really feel great when I hear about that which make me feel I had written something that's valuable, anyway, thanks and hope podcast will get you more traffic and even moolah...
  3. Dennis Edell says:
Another thing many fail to realize - - podcasts are an awesome alternative for those afraid to step in front of a camera. ;-)
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Well, if you are afraid to stand in front of the camera, you can either outsource the content you want to a someone who will create a cartoon like character that will use your voice to speak , not a bad way too :)
      • Dennis Edell says:
That all depends on where it's going; not all too professional. ;-)
        • Alex says:
Yeah, no one wants to think you're taking the Mickey now ;)
  4. David Crandall says:
Great article! I've become a big fan of podcasts this past year and agree with your points. :) I think as more people get smart phones and listen to podcasts while away from the computer, the popularity of podcasts stands the ability to increase. Plus, by posting your podcast on iTunes (and similar sites), you reach people that would NEVER have found your blog if it was only text. Podcasting = Smart
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes, you are right podcasting = smart, and now with mobile phones so easily accessible with programs such as itune... it's almost endless and unlimited exposure....
  5. Cosmin Stefan says:
Hello Wong! Personally, I’d rather read a text than listening to an audio but I guess some people are different (especially in some niches). I think I’ll start using podcasting in the future. Thanks for sharing your insights and good luck in the contest!
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Well, you are absolutely right, not all people listen to podcast, but being unique as a podcaster is something that will make others look you differently. Thanks for coming by reading my guest post and may lady luck be on my side :)
    • David Crandall says:
I am the same way in that I would rather read than listen...most of the time. But there are two points to consider on that. 1. Not everyone is like us. Giving those auditory people something is cool. 2. There is one place that you can ONLY listen and not read. The car. I never listened to podcasts prior to getting my smart phone. Once I did, I started downloading them regularly and listening to them on my 45 minute commute every day. I'm finding that more and more people are choosing to do this. In an arena where people are fighting for attention, it's interesting to think that you can get someone's attention when they are AWAY from their computer and driving in their vehicle. Just a thought (well, two). :)
      • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
You should care less of whether or not people will listen, remember this: Concentrate on selling the wolfs and ignore the dogs, don't let the 2 points above to pull you down because as long as there is someone downloading the podcast to listen to, it means there are others like that too. It is how you get those targeted traffic that you should be concern about. And lastly remember you cannot please everyone, you can only please the very small group of people and believe me, if you could just do that just imagine 0.1 percent of the total people in your niche listen to your podcast... tell me can you handle the download bandwidth...
  6. dofollow says:
I have never really understood pod casts, but you have shed a great deal of light into it's advantages. Would video blogging have a greater impact though?Ash
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes, video blogging does give great impact, just look at 'Frank Kern" he just hit the internet marketing crowd like a storm with his awesome cool videos and his widely known crazy product "Mass Control"...
  7. Daniel M. Clark says:
Some pretty good theory here, but a word of warning. If anyone thinks that putting together a quality podcast that will *actually* drive traffic and keep people interested is as easy as putting together an eBook... you're going to be sorely disappointed. With podcasting you're asking listeners or viewers to engage your content for ten, fifteen, thirty minutes or more. This isn't "oh, I'll click to download a 20 page eBook on a whim" - you are asking listeners for a commitment. If you don't respect the audience, they'll bail - and fast. Having a podcast doesn't make anyone an authority or expert. Having a quality podcast that people actually listen to and talk about makes someone an authority or expert. If the flood of crap eBooks didn't teach a lesson about the importance of quality, I don't know what will.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Well, you are absolutely partly right about what you said, look.. what if your podcast is posted on a high traffic website or blog of an expert in your niche... what do you think? It's the same as guest posting but now, is "guest podcasting" you should try contacting your niche expert and ask them nicely that you have something to share with their audience and if your podcast is accepted... guess what it means your podcast is.... A QUALITY PODCAST ! If it is not accepted, you can either contact other top podcaster in your niche or change to a better content... Look, I have went to your blog and I saw a lot of great podcast, but you aren't getting any comments and I have check your blog on Alexa... Well, if you want to get on high traffic for your blog, my best advice and also best recommendation is to go find out who is your niche expert and try to contact them telling them you have something to share or another way is go to your forum niche and look if there is any podcaster in the forum that you can share content with... I hope it helps you with better traffic generation using podcast...
      • Daniel M. Clark says:
As I said, some good theory there. Yes, if you can get an episode posted on a high-traffic (and well-targeted) site, that's a good thing... but unlike guest posting, where you have backlinks to help your own traffic, with a podcast, you're relying on your audio/video content to establish yourself. True, you could have extensive show notes (and you should) or even a transcription, but in the end, spotting a poorly constructed podcast is way easier than spotting a poorly constructed text-based blog post. You're right about my comments right now. At six months old, QAQN is ramping up - I've just started my fourth show. What you're not considering though is that comments are meaningless if you're using them to gauge the reach and audience of a show. My shows are posted not just at QAQN but also at GeekCast.fm, Podcast Alley and in iTunes. You have no idea what my download numbers are. I'm not going to tell you I've been downloaded a million times, but I've been podcasting since 2008 and I've been successful - despite my Alexa numbers for that one website. And that is the mistake that I think a lot of people are going to make if they think that podcasting, in and of itself, is just another marketing tool. They're going to make a show, post it on their website, and wait for the traffic to roll in. It doesn't work that way. Podcasting *is* a great marketing tool. You were right when you said that it's an awesome way to establish authority. The part I feel you left out is that the podcast has to be *good*.
        • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Well, although I left out about podcast has to be good, but I surely believe everyone knows quality sells, I mean it's common sense... and I already said in my previous comment, I'm only visiting and going through my routine of checking out a blog on Alexa... Well... if a visitor like me is curious about you and they went to a blog and saw what I had saw... tell me what they will think of? Remember first impression needs to be good, people doesn't care whether your podcast is downloaded million times because just like me... no one sees it, so having comments and discussion on a blog... will make a first timer visitor feels... "This Blog Looks Great" Don't you think... Just imagine Famous Bloggers doesn't had comment and discussion on his blog... what's the point? Every aspect of a blog, design, discussion, content, etc... is almost the tipping point of what a visitor or target audience might be looking at... so, it's important to at least have discussion on a blog rather then nothing...
  8. Alexis says:
Hi Wong, You've explained so well how to go about podcast. Before reading your post my thinking was that podcast are just for experts but i now see how anyone can use it as a marketing tool. Thanks for sharing!
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
No problem, well... not all but most people think it is for experts, but the truth is anyone can use it ... it's just that I had not yet seen any experts create a course out of it, and I truly believe this traffic source is"what the pros and expert are hiding from us" And I also believe... not long there will be someone creating a course of this in near future.... hehehe...
  9. Axcell Van says:
I haven't tried podcasts but I'm willing to do so now. People are more reactive to someone who is speaking or moving in front of them compared to words on a webpage. Since I travel alot, maybe people will find the places I visit interesting.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Wow... wow... wow... you should had done video podcast, believe me, if you travel a lot, you should show your audience video of where you travel... that will make you audience believe, trust and like you.... seriously... you should... no doubt about it...
  10. Bican Valeriu says:
A few days ago I found Fiverrr...I was amaized by how many things people do for only $5.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
I know it sounds crazy for $5... but a word of warning, although the place is good for $5... always be aware there are people who are down right sucks that will cheat you away for $5... so be on your guard and always know the way to getting the real $5 deal...
  11. Sandeep says:
Never really explored this method of building up traffic... if im right podcasts have more to do with audio? So you're referring to interviewing experts and putting up those audios on your blog? Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect. Cheers Sandeep
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Podcaast is basically audio or video posting on a website, but it is more towards audio where you speak to the audience... You can do interviews too And one more thing... Podcast is all about streaming live... which is to say... if anyone want to hear your podcast... all they have to do is press play.... and they will be able to listen... and not download before they can listen... remember this: Speed and ease is the element of world wide web...
      • Sandeep says:
        Thanks for the info Wong
  12. Saket Jajodia says:
Even there is a service called odiogo which will help you in transforms your blog feed into a audio Podcasts. To give a try I have implemented on my blog but down side is there is no option to know how many people are listing to it..
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
If I'm not wrong feedburner are able to track, but here are two that are able to track podcast too, may be you can consider using them : http://libsyn.com/ http://www.podtrac.com/
      • Saket Jajodia says:
Thanks a lot for links and FeedBurner tip bcoz just now I noticed they are having prob in updating new feeds..
        • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Actually, feeedburner always had this problem of updating feeds... but after all... this is minor... the bigger one is... when it went down fo a day or two... which will cause feedburner reader to be frustrated...
          • Saket Jajodia says:
WHAT??!! FeedBurner goes down?? :O I never knew and I never show also it went down.. And prob of updating feed is not with FeedBurner its with odiogo by which anyone can listen podcasts of my blog feed..
  13. semmy says:
Hi Wong I think I should try to used fiver to do an interview. You give me an Idea for my niche site. Thanks!
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
No problem, actually if you go to Fiver... you will get more ideals out of that place but a word of warning always check the persons detail before sending your money over... will although $5 is damn cheap... but still it is best to not get cheated...
  14. Sheila Atwood says:
Wong,Podcasts look like a great traffic source to me too.The other day I was looking for a podcast I had loaded into iTunes and to my surprise there were ads for podcasts. I guess what caught my attention was, the ads were by people I know.I go to a site every week to listen to their weekly podcast. It is done interview style and I always learn something.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes, podcast is not just about traffic or so, but if you could put it to good use... it will be a profitable business, just imagine one of your podcast is loaded into itune... can you believe how much "apple" user are there listening to itune... and how much traffic will be bursting to your business site....
  15. Andreas says:
Podcasts are an interesting source to get targeted traffic and its surprisingly not used much. To host my podcasts, I am using the relatively stable .podbean.com as provider.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes, it had not been use too much for the reason, some people think they had to either talk through the mike or record their face on a video, but the truth is... You can outsource audio to someone else to do where you only provide content and video... well you can us "animated" cartoon to actually give out content....
  16. Vijayraj Reddy says:
Creating podcasts in right way is somewhat hard, but one you succeed you will drive traffic to your site...
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes, this is really true, once you get it, nothing can stop it...
  17. Devesh says:
Very useful and a well written post Wong. Podcasting is great way to market your blog, get traffic, build brand and build some connections. Thanks for sharing this great post with us. ~Dev
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Thanks Dev for coming by reading my post and supporting me, I really appreciate a lot, and yes Podcasting is really a wonderful way as people won't get bored hearing or watching great content...
  18. semmy says:
Hi Wong thank you very much for your article. I agree with you. using podcasting can drive massive traffic if we can used in the right way. Also build a credibility. thank you very much for your article.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
No problem, and thanks for coming taking your time to read my guest post and hope it sparks some ideals for you.
  19. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Wong, Clear and concise post on the benefits on podcasting. The leveraging potential of podcasting is tremendous; as you note, so many listeners in such a rapidly growing niche. Thanks for sharing! RB
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
For what I know niches such as "Motivation" and "How read fast" are niches that have great amount of podcast download I had personally discovered while searching for niches to sell as an affiliate. Although there are other niches but the above I just my tips for a rapidly growing niche.
  20. James says:
Creating podcasts are an awsome addition to your traffic generation plan. And quite often you can just strip the audio from your videos and publish them as podcasts with minimal effort to reach a wider audience. Some great tips in this post!
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes, stripping audio from video and publish them as podcast is a great way, but make sure you had full authority to strip those video... What I will do is ask someone to transcript the video and then take down all the important points and use a mic to address those important points to the audience... this way, you will be able to create expert authority towards the audience and not the person in the video...
      • James says:
Ahh, I meant using your own videos so it would be your content anyways, like taking a series of your own Youtube videos and publishing the audios as a podcast series too. Your idea is a great way for more content though.
  21. James Martell says:
You are sooooooo right! I have been podcasting since 2003. Originally my show was twice monthly, now it's weekly. I just posted my #194 show. They have been downloaded millions of times. Podcasting is as far as I am concerned the #1 strategy for building traffic, exposure, selling and building an audience. As you say it truly "...is the underestimated traffic source." I convinced my wife Arlene a couple years ago to at least do a few shows. She did 6 on the topic of children with epilepsy. Her shows have been downloaded from her site over 50,000 times, is available on iTunes and is fed into a dozen or so podcast directories. Her podcast is the reason she so well know in the kids with epilepsy world. http://www.epilepsymoms.com/media-type/podcast I hope this would be appropriate here. I did a 2-part podcast detailing how to organize and manage a podcast including the free tools that are available plus how and where to promote it. Do It Yourself Podcasting – (Part 1 of 2) http://jamesmartell.com/affiliate-buzz/podcasting-to-build-your-brand/ Do It Yourself Podcasting – (Part 2 of 2) http://jamesmartell.com/affiliate-buzz/do-it-yourself-podcasting-part-2-of-2/ Excellent post. James
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Can I promote your podcast links on my blog? I had downloaded it and listen and they are truly great and because of that... I wanted this podcast to be share on my blog... Usually, I hire someone to do podcast for me... because since I'm a Chinese, my English pronunciation may be incorrect... that is why I paid someone to do the podcasting for me in my other niches... Anyway, thanks for coming by reading my post and commenting it... Talk to you soon...
      • James Martell says:
Sure, that would be fine and appreciated. You can always grab the RSS feed if you would like them to stream into your site automatically. http://www.blubrry.com/affiliate_buzz_podcast/archive/
  22. Dana says:
Interesting! So far, I do not utilize the podcast nor hear the podcast. I think I will start to learn it by hearing several podcast out there.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Well... if you are starting out, the very best recommendation is to first record in your own voice stuff you know and then listen to it, when you first do this... you will get crank up stopping here and there... but don't worry... this is absolutely normal... you just have to practice a few times so you will be able to speak smoothly... once you get it... it's time to go to Fiverr.com...
  23. Melinda says:
I agree. I'm actually getting ready to create some podcasts for my clients...some how to videos. Not only will it help me not repeat myself a million times...saving me time, but they can access them anytime they want. Video is a great addition to a blog.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes video are great addition to a blog, but if you are going into video podcast, the very best teacher I can recommend is this dude "Frank Kern" If you haven't you should go to his blog and watch some of it.... I bet you will learn tons of marketing stuff...
