1996 vs. 2011 – The Internet, Yesterday & Today [Infographic]

September 13, 2011 - Last Modified: September 13, 2011 by Tony Shin

The Internet Yesterday And Today

When the Internet first put pages online, I was only 10. I don’t remember much, considering I was pretty poor and could not afford to have the Internet. It’s amazing to see how far along we’ve come. This infographic by Online University provides a past and present view just how far we’ve come in terms of the advancement we’ve made in technology.

Think about it; How irritated do you get when the page doesn’t load quickly? Or when you click a link and it just sits there, with no action?

Aside from the advancements, it’s amazing to see what the Internet has done for us, especially economically.

We’ve been able to sell things online, create websites and have advertisement placements to help pay our bills and support our families. Nonetheless, this graphic really shows where we’ve come from. A true blessing, indeed.

I remembered I started using the Internet in 2000, but that was only for my project and for YM chatting from foreign countries... I love the way your info graph shows. The technology has really gone too far. Thank you for sharing...

I think you had just reminded me on the internet when I was still small. MIRC and ICQ is like the thing that we did most on the internet. And I also will not forget the moment where I had a big hard time downloading a 10MB game patch! Now we can just do it in less than 5. Things changed and glad the internet had changed to create so many Internet Entrepreneurs today.

I remember the early days and the extremely slow dialup modems with the annoying noise they made. I can't even imagine how long many web pages would take to load with a dialup modem now. I vaguely recall a friend telling me some site would take around 5 mins. I don't know how someone would have the patience to wait that long. At least we had a few more popular search engines back then that had more competition.

Hi Tony, A hearty LOL on this one, especially the 1 minute load times ;) I remember going online for the first time at my college; yes, I was a late adopter. My home had no internet access. I had no clue in hell what email was in 96, let alone some of these new-fangled websites. All a confusing blur to me, but as I adopted the ease with which I could gain information online I became a web junkie. Thanks for sharing a trip down memory lane. RB
