The Importance of Creating a Killer Logo Design

May 3, 2012 - Last Modified: March 29, 2014 by Zac Johnson 1,450

Logo Design

Whenever I start a new web site or blog that I am planning on building into something big and eventually an “authority” site, one of the first things I do is make sure I have a great domain name, but also an excellent logo design. I want to launch my site with a killer logo design that leaves a lasting impression and starts “branding” the site from day one.

There are plenty of ways to create logos online. You can go with a high end service and pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars, or you can take time to look around for competitive services at much lower prices and maybe sacrifice a bit of quality. You can also use logo design services like LogoMyWay and 99Designs. No matter who you use, you need to start creating branding for your site from day one.

The Creation and Thought Process Behind Logo Design and Branding

Let me tell you right now, creating a great logo design is not easy. The color, design and first impression of your logo design will play a major impact on your site design and how others see your logo/branding.

great logo design

I wrote a post a few months back on how I went through the design process for PetFoodia.com, a new pet food site I was creating. The service I used was LogoNerds and they provide each customer with a form process to write about the design you would like to have, along with other competitive brands and logos, and what you like and don’t like about the designs. LogoNerds will then send you a first set of drafts and you can continue to improve and build out your logo with their design time.

Famous Blogs and the Impact of their Logos and Branding

There are plenty of well known and authority blogs that are using custom logos to help influence and grow their brands on a daily basis. Here are just a few of the top sites and the basis of their logo designs.

  • ShoeMoney.com – Taking advantage of the Superman concept, ShoeMoney has taken the logo to a new level by changing the “S” to a dollar sign and building out his brand with something unique and brandable that has become quite the recognizable and powerful logo in the internet marketing space.
  • ZacJohnson.com – I can truly attest to the power of logo design by creating my own mascot at ZacJohnson.com, which has also become one of the most powerful and recognized logos in the affiliate marketing space. While this mascot design was high end and did cost a few hundred dollars to create, the branding and power behind the design has paid for itself hundreds of times over.
  • FamousBloggers.net – Even this blog has an excellent and effective logo design. No matter what type of blog or site you are running, having a creative and original logo can really bring some branding and life to your blog. FamousBloggers.net has a simple yet creative look that really brings the site together.
  • Problogger.net – As one of the most successful marketing blogs on the internet, Problogger came out with a new logo of their own just a couple years ago. The interesting thing about the Problogger logo is that it’s simple yet brandable and effective. It doesn’t even have “.net” in the logo design, as the “Problogger” name is already so famous and branded.

No matter what type of web site or blog you run, there are plenty of mascot and logo design services out there for you to choose from. By complementing your site and business with a unique and original logo, you will have the branding for your site working on a daily basis. It’s much cheaper than you might think, and the branding effect of your logo will continue to work for you for the life of your site.

Hey Zac, I think the logo is very important for a website. If you are not an expert graphic designer it is best that you outsource it as you mention. You shouldn't try to do it yourself either. It can take up a lot of time and when it is all said and done it is still worth having it professionally done.
  3. James says:
Hey, Zac! You wrote an interesting article. I haven't realized the importance of the logo before, I'm glad I've read your article. Thanks for sharing.
  4. Kostas says:
Hi Zac, Having a logo that stands out is really important for any business and of course for blogs too. It makes a blog seem unique and actually make it easier for visitors to remember it and find it easier whenever they want even if they forgot the name of the blog...

After all, the logo making is a main priority for a business according to the marketing science. In my opinion the logo must be something simple and easy to remember it. Thank you for sharing!

  8. Dean Saliba says:
A killer logo is vital and I would say that it is one area you should not be cheap about, I would not recommend hiring someone from Fiverr for it. :)
  9. Rashmi Sinha says:
Logos are a crucial part for every company. That's why most people offer a lot of money for a good logo, prices are ranging from 50 - 300 dollars for a single logo creation. But is definitely worth it.
  10. Marshall Davis says:
I am a firm believer in going with a simpler logo rather than a busy one. Think of the logos of some of the bigger companies - McDonald's, Nike, Starbucks, etc. They are simple and very recognizable. Zac, I do like the final logo you settled on for your PetFoodia site!
  11. Micah says:
A good logo is very hard to design. Most of the ones that end getting used a garbage. You can't just slap something together. It's almost always better to get a competent logo designer, even if you have to pay a little more. Don't use Fiverr lol. I just unleashed my own logo a short while back, quite pleased with the results, it definitely adds to the professional image(or illusion, as the case may be)
  12. Jack Sander says:
Having a great logo can also help to build a strong brand in a short amount of time. It is a well known fact that people are attracted by visual representation rather than text, therefore choosing the right logo can make people return to a site often, as they remember its name easier.
    • Rashmi Sinha says:
Yes it is true that if a logo is successful (not necessarily expensive though) people that see it once will remember it for a long time. Maybe it has to do with subconscious but it all depends on what the person is looking at, the colors and how unique it is.
  13. Sanjeev says:
True. a good looking logo always required for a successful business idea.
