Google pagerank, indexed pages, backlinks, Alexa rank what, how and where?

September 30, 2011 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Jimmy Sigenstroem 4,391

Google pagerank

You have probably heard all 4 expressions, but do you know what they are, what they are good for and how to use them in your daily work on your website, blog or any other kind of website?

They all have one thing in common and that is, that they all are used to measure your website’s ranking relative to other sites of the same type, rank your websites relative to all other websites , your progress and the value of your website in general. But unfortunately many website owners don’t utilize these tools to get ahead of their competitors.

But let’s take them all one by one, so if you don’t use them now you will after this know how to use them to get a better position on search engines like Google.

Google Pagerank

This rank is the one thing that has the most myths about it, which also makes it hard for new webmasters to figure out what it´s good for. But let’s set it straight for once, Pagerank is not equal to the value of your website in Google’s eyes!

pagerankBut your website’s pagerank is the value and the number of backlinks you have to your website. This means that the more backlinks you get from large websites like FamousBloggers.net, ComLuv.com, W3Blog.dk and other websites like this the higher your pagerank will be.

But this doesn’t mean that Google doesn’t use it to determine which position your website should have in their search engines. Because even though the Pagerank isn’t the value of your site, it’s still a quality stamp from all the other websites that links to you thereby giving your website a higher value.

And the higher your Pagerank is, the more the users trust your site and we all know that users that trust your website are more prone to click on ads thereby earning you revenue.

So Pagerank isn’t the value of your website, but it’s still something you should pay attention to.

In order to see your websites Pagerank, you can use one of many Pagerank checker‘s or the Google toolbar, they will all give you the same value.

Indexed pages

This almost goes without saying, that it’s the number of pages on your website that has been added to the search engines. In other words the higher number of indexed pages, the more value your website has in the eyes of the search engines.

But a website can have a large number of indexed pages and still be low value, because the values is also determined by how fast and how often the search engines revisit your page. If Google indexes pages today( 2011/09/13 ) and for example Google doesn’t revisit this page for 2 months, well then it’s a low value site.

An example could be FamousBloggers.net, the front page gets revisited every day by Google (thereby making it a high value page). But Google only revisits my BMI calculator once every ten days, making it a website with a lower value.

To find out how many of your websites pages are indexed on the search engines, you just have to type “site:yourwebsite.com” in search fields. Or again use one of the many online tools, they often check Google, Bing and Yahoo all at once thus saving you time.

Backlinks to your website

backlinks to your websiteAgain this almost goes without saying, it’s the number of links to your website from other websites. There are 2 types of backlinks, there are links with the code “rel=nofollow” this code is telling the search engines that they shouldn’t follow the link. This also means that you won’t get the same out of this link, as you would with a link without this code.

Thereby making these links lower value than a normal link, but you still need links like this due to the rule called naturally link building. Which in all simplicity says that your backlinks, should be retrieved naturally. In other words it should be all types of links ie direct links, nofollow links, links through images, redirected links.

Or at least this is my opinion on the subject!

Yet again you can use the search engines to see the number of backlinks to your websites by typing “link:yourwebsite.com” in the search field on Google and Bing. On Yahoo you use “site:” and then click on “inlinks”.

Note that Google doesn’t give you the the total number of backlinks indexed by Google, they do this in order to make it difficult for other sites to figure out how many and where you get your backlinks.

But they still show a sample of the links, thus giving you some idea of the number of backlinks another website has. For example if Google shows you 20 backlinks when you do a search but you have 500 in your webmastertool, then you can use this to estimate the number of backlinks your competitor has. If Google shows you 20 of your competitor’s backlinks, then it’s fair to say that he or she has 500 backlinks indexed on Google.

You can also check your backlinks with free tools online

Alexa Rank

Many think that one’s Alexa rank is a reflection of the traffic their websites has overall, but this is far from the truth! Your ranking is determined by the number of users that have their toolbar installed on his or her browser, and not by all the traffic you get. For example if you have 3000 hits a day, you can still have a low ranking on Alexa because only 30 of them has the Alexa Toolbar installed.

A thing that most webmasters don’t know, and a thing they are using a lot of hours to figure out is why they have such a low ranking on Alexa.

And due to this fact I don’t waste so much as a second on trying to get a better Alexa ranking, but others swear to Alexa and their system. So I will let it be up to you to decide if you want to use it.

Hope this gives you a better picture on what the 4 things are and what they are good for?

How and where do you check your websites rankings?

A good succinct article, Jimmy. I have been having doubts about trusting Alexa though - their FAQ says they update once a week, but I haven't seen my blog's rank or sites linking in updated since months. And the last thing I want to do is add another toolbar; enough of 'em already!

  8. Sachin Walvekar says:
Its driving me nuts thinking that Alexa has such a lopsided logic about linking site popularity to installation of Alexa toolbar. Which planet do they belong?

I usually check my rankings on a site called vampirestats, that gives me a good overview of what my site is ranked. Nice article!

a website can have a large number of indexed pages and still be low value, If Google indexes pages but the site has no back links and no visitors , then no value for indexing. The impotent information should have visitors I see many site has no important information but a lot of visitors for only the name of the site , these sites have good pagerank and good alexa.com number

I believe you can fix the alexa rank problem by showing a alexa widget on your website. I believe this works the same as a user having the alexa toolbar installed, but then for everyone that visits your website. I am wondering though. I moved domains recently, and my new domain already has several dozens of backlinks in Alexa, but only one (1!) backlink from google and none in bing/yahoo. Now the absolute strange thing is, is that this ONLY backlink in google is a link to my old domain. This would be normal if that old domain would 301 redirect to my new domain, but it doesn't. It redirects using rel=canonical. For me it is very strange that none of my newly generated backlinks to my new domain (i am not sitting still) are showing, but a very old link to my old domain which redirects using a canonical link IS showing. Very strange... I just hope google starts seeing more inbound links soon
  13. Alicja says:
I was wondering if anyone knew how the list of backlinks by Alexa is arranged. Is the top website link listed the most influential? Or is it the most recent link? The one that drives the most traffic? Thanks, Alicja
  14. Musthafa Ullal says:
Many of the people claim that they can improve the Alexa Rank of any website by some simple steps. But many advertisers are still looking at the Alexa Rank more and more. PR also main source of decisions for them for paid posts or paid links. Still Google Analytics is the perfect way to track the website traffic, but advertisers cant view it publicly. If any blogger uses Quantcast tracking codes in their websites, then any people can check the accurate traffic(99%) via Quantcast website.
  15. Kundan Bhardwaj says:
Well thats been a really confusing scenario for me when it comes about PR and Alexa ranking. I was wondering why it shows low visitors in fact in my case no visitors. Now this post is a real doubtclearing session for me. Thanks a lot.
  16. Mike Huddson says:
Wow, what a great post explaining everything related to SEO like Google Page Rank, Alexa Rank etc.Everything is in so detail that no more question but I still have one question. Mostly people think Alexa Rank is fake. What your personal view ?
  17. Easther says:
I thought only do-follow links are essential for increase website ranking. But after reading your blog it seems that some no-follow links are also needed. Am I right??
  18. Graham says:
Good info about Alexa - I didn't realise the link between the toolbar and that stats! Great article, thanks for the help. Graham
  19. Mark Hunter says:
I find it frustrating that it's still not possible to get a definitive list of your backlinks from any tool. Fortunately, Google webmaster tools have improved significantly recently, and now provide a much larger list of backlinks, although data given by the 'link' command iin the normal search is very poor. I don't bother with Alexa as it's so easy to fix your ranking using the Alexa toolbar.
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
The date you get from a "link" search on Google, is only a sample of the websites backlinks. Google does that to protect a website, from a competitor getting the 411 on your website. But you can still get an idea of how many backlinks a given website has, by looking at the number Google gives on a search on your own website. You can though get the number of backlinks on Yahoo and bing, by using webmaster tools like the pagerank checker in the article.
  20. Paul Salmon says:
I find that Alexa and Google PageRank to be over-hyped. The worst thing is many online advertising sites use both to help potential advertisers find sites to advertise on. Something about using inaccurate data, or data that doesn't represent the true traffic of a site doesn't seem right to me.
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
Alexa is definitely over-hyped, but that's only due to the lack of knowledge about how the stats are done. But if Pagerank is used in the right way, it can be an indication on how ones link building is going.
  21. Sakib says:
I don't trust Alexa much. In my opinion, it's worthless. My website is not only for Webmasters, I want everyone to come to my site and my ranking should be overall of my visitors and quality.
  22. Daniel. says:
Nice article, Jimmy. Having a solid Alexa ranking and Google PR, are forever being discussed out on the web. Many people are now starting to question whether they should be spending so much time sweating over them, especially as the article above rightly states, that the Alexa Ranking is quite dubious to say the least. It is more important to spend the majority of time optimizing each page on your site. Then eventually your site ranking and Google PR will improve soon enough.
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
I'm hoping that webmasters and advertisers in time, will look at what matters and that's like you write the content and nothing but the content.! If you create good content, then in time both pr and ranking will come automatically.
  23. Wansa T says:
I think PR and Alexa Rank does't take any effect to traffic or Search engine Ranking like Google. When I search some keyword I found over 10 million Ranking from Alexa on top of Google Page. How's come ?
  24. Tanya says:
This is a very good guide for beginners at SEO and online marketing. I'd also suggest that newbies (and veterans) check out mozRank as well, which should be right up there with all of these other ranking factors.
  25. Ann says:
Hi Jimmy, Awesome informative article! As a newbie, it seems that I have to read everything I can find. As far as page rankings, it seems to me it is pretty much a 'crap shoot'!!! But yet we all struggle everyday trying to raise our ranking!! Thanks for much for all of the information. I'll definitely put it to work right away.
  26. Guru says:
Amazing!! Relief to know about Alexa. Also, I didn't know about value of nofollow link but it kinda makes sense for building links naturally. Keep it up!! Also, thanks to other floks for suggesting some tools for SEO and rank checking.
  27. Sunil Sharma says:
Hi Jimmy, I am newbie in web business and I does not know much about these all things but I think you are quite right. I want to ask a question that how can i measure actual progress of my website, although my SEO guys says that site is growing very well but I am not sure and want to check it myself. Pls. suggest me in this regard that which ranking is better to ensure its growth. Regards, Sunil
    • Louis says:
Hi Sunil, maybe I can help. The easiest way is by checking your site's visitors and bounce rate. Is there any increase in the number of visitors, page views and is the bounce rate decreasing? Higher bounce rate means that visitors don't stay long in your website and you need to know why and how to make them do.
      • Sunil Sharma says:
Thanks Louis! I discuss about it from my SEO guy and he told me that current bounce rate is 49% which was previously 56%. but there is no major diff. in page views and visitors.
    • jimmy says:
As Luis writes that is the best way to see your stats on visitors, you can use the Google analytics that's already installed on your website. Just ask you seo guys to get access to it, you can read about it here http://www.google.com/analytics/ In order to check you position on for example Google on your keyword, you need some sort of tool for this. I use Rank Checker from seobook, and Free monitor for Google from Cleverstats. Hope this helps :)
      • Sunil Sharma says:
Thanks Jimmy ! I m reading your given link and it is interesting to learn myself some basics of SEO. Now I think that total number of page views and unique visitors is more important than any other rank whether it Alexa or Page Rank and I will try for that instead waiting for good Alexa and Page Rank.
        • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
If you want to increase your visitors, then it could an good idea to install the comluv and keywordluv plugins. It's the same plugins as Famousbloggers uses.
  28. Satrap says:
Great explanation in the comment section Jimmy. It always amazes me how many advertiser and even bloggers and webmaster put so mcuh value on Alexa ranking without realizing that its based on a totally different criteria than what they think it is.
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
Well I just hope that this post can get the ball rolling, so that both webmaster and advertiser can't get fair prices for the ads. But I also have to say that I'm shocked, that so many doesn't know that Alexa isn't accurate.
  29. vhien says:
I find my rankings through alexa and yes... I'm focusing on why and how my rankings are not that good everytime I check out my site. Well, maybe you're right. I don't need to pay attention on ALexa that much, instead I will be focusing on my deeds on how to continue getting more backlinks. Thanks for the insights.
    • Mark Thomas says:
Pardon me but I am disagree with you as Alexa rank is an important figure for SEO peoples as it shows a website’s overall traffic. I think that Alexa ranking is very important to see actual site traffic.
      • Jimmy says:
Mark that's the hole problem, it doesn't show you a websites overall traffic. Is shows you traffic stats from users that has their toolbar installed. For example your site has a 100 hits today, but only two of your users are using the toolbar. This will then only give you to hits according to Alexa, giving you a low ranking. But if your friends blog has 20 hits a day, and 10 of them has the toolbar. Then he will get a higher ranking on Alexa than you. Alexa even writes this on their site.!
        • vhien says:
          Very well said Jimmy. :)
  30. Ewan Kennedy says:
Hi Jimmy, Agree with everything you've said, particularly the stuff on PageRank. There are a few things that PageRank (Tool Bar PageRank) is useful for, even if not for rankings, such as time taken to crawl and index your new content. It can also provide signals about possible penalties. But, yes, I agree it is mainly just an indication of raw link authority.
  31. Swamykant says:
Alexa is not the right metric.. but still the advertisers and fellow blogger considered important.. If we have tech blog... I believe Alexa rank matters alot.
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
I don't disagree with you on that a lot of advertisers and bloggers thinks that Alexa ranking is important. And for some types of websites and blogs is Alexa important, because it can give better earnings on ads. But for websites / blogs on ei. recipes, health and other non webmaster topics, is Alexa not relevant because their rank on the site is wrong. You have to remember that the normal internet user doesn't have that tool, the normal webmaster doesn't have, but webmasters that know about seo have it if they want it. So a site with 5000 hits a day can have a lower ranking than an webmaster blog with 200 hits a day. And I'll bet you that 99% of the advertisers doesn't even know about the problem, with the rankings.
  32. Anto Morpheus says:
The important thing is google PR, because if a website already has high PR then it could be said he had passed through the stages as applying to have good content, Onpage-seo properly, enough backlinks and SERP automatically increased. Furthermore, by itself Alexa rank will also rise.
  33. Kavya Hari says:
In fact, page rank is one of the great value for the web sites. And, it will be more powerful to increase the web sites level. so, i would like to say thanks for given up here :)
  34. Daniel Wood says:
Nicely explained everything Jimmy. I knew already about the PageRank, Indexed Pages and Back Links. Just wanted to discover more about Alexa Rank as I was also not sure how does it help or exactly what it is. I admit that prior to reading your post, i also believe that Alexa rank is a reflection of the website traffic. The more the number of hits, the better your Alexa Rank. I didn't know that Alexa Toolbar has to do something with it. Thanks for making it clear. Now i could put it off from my worries list. :)
  35. Paul Profitt says:
About a couple of months ago. I had a re-think about my linking strategy. Without sounding too big headed. I always knew that the content on my blog was good. But for the life of me. I could not figure out why my Alexa rank was so bad. My Google page rank is 3 (the last time that I checked) so that was never really a problem. But to cut a long story short. The changes that I think made my Alexa rank rise. Was to to upload their file into the root directory of my domain. I also did the same thing on Google webmaster tools and Bing. This means that they now have more accurate stats regarding my web site. I also upgraded to Pretty Link Pro. and made more blog comments to higher ranking web sites.
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
Sounds like it worked for you, so your traffic stats are right now. But unfortunately that doesn't fix the the ranking problem, and that overall Alexa is inaccurate when looking at the big picture.
      • Paul Profitt says:
Hi Jimmy You are right. Alexa is not 100% accurate. But it is what most of the uneducated business owners who use the Internet. Believe in and base their advertising budget on.
  36. Jamie Northrup says:
I keep track of Page Rank, Alexa Rank and a couple others out of curiosity, but in the end, I really prefer comparing my stats to my previous stats, as long as I'm improving I'm happy.
  37. Ming Jong Tey says:
Hey Jimmy, I use Rank Tracker, Rankerizer and Traffic Travis to track my keywords ranking on the search engine. Out of those, I prefer Rankerizer since it is free and you can save your project. Sometimes, traffic travis just does not reflect the ranking, not sure what's going on. Anyway, thanks for pointing out the Alexa ranking myth. It is one of the factor many people are looking for when doing banner ads / media buys, etc...Yet, it is still not a good measure...The only way to find out is to try it... Cheers, Ming
  38. Rebecca says:
I agree with you on all counts but it's too complicated as well. I just rely on good and interesting contents.
  39. Kunal Sharma says:
A very appreciable article. I did not know few things which got clear after reading this article. And in the end you are very right that Alexa ranking should not be given importance. It's never judged on the amount of traffic we receive.
  40. Rakesh Kumar says:
Quite differentiate guide but impressive. Before reading this i just think that backlinks is all things which we should have?
  41. Lennart Heleander says:
My favorite for checking keyword placements in different .com .net .es .de ect. is : seoserp.com
    • jimmy says:
I didn't know that one, I use Rank Checker and the free tool from cleverstat they are quite accurate. You can also check several countries and search engines at ones.
  42. Grady Pruitt says:
I hear so many putting all their efforts in figuring out their Pagerank nd Alexa rating. If they would put all that effort into creating good, valuable content and finding ways to get their message in front of people who are interested in what they've written, they'll find that those stats will improve naturally. Thanks for your post!
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
Many times they just end up hurting the website instead of increasing it's ranking.! Good content on your own site, good guest posts and good comments should be the primary tools for any webmaster.
  43. Steve says:
Jimmy, You make a good point about Alexa. Specifically since it is sometimes used as a measure of worth for advertisments payouts. The problem is, as bad as it is, there is not a better system. If "everyone" or at least a larger random sampling had the toolbar it would be great. What we really need is something like the Alexa toolbar installed by default in a Major browser (IE Firefox or Chrome) If that happened the traffic numbers would not be exact...but the sampling would at least be random and therefore a good indicator...like the Nielson ratings for TV.
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
Now that would make it somewhat better, but I don't think it will happen. But as Mohamed Osam wrote what we need is for Google to make a web interface like Alexa, and of course with out showing all about the website just showing the number of hits a day, the number of indexed pages, a sample of backlinks because a websites backlinks tells a lot about a page, the pagerank for those how wants it. But it will of course be a huge task and they'll have to walk on a thin line, in order not to end up with something that could hurt any given website.
  44. Pritam says:
Well written article Jimmy. Many of the new bloggers get confused with these terms and spend their time creating back links and other non useful stuff. They should understand, its not page rank but its theor contents which will make them ranked in search engines. I liked about Alexa explanation too. Thanks
  45. Saket Jajodia says:
I don't believe on Alexa rank much but however I do use it sometimes to get little idea about some websites . And most of the advertiser to believe in it so we should not always ignore it.
    • Bruker says:
i agree with you saket, personally i prefer google page ranking which provides a huge information related to your business.
    • Osho says:
Agree With Saket And Jimmy Too :) I Have Website With 5000+ Visitors Daily Alexa Rank Is 300000+ And Website With Alexa Widget 200+ Visitor Alexa Rank Is < 220000
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
No we shouldn't ignore it just yet, due to the many advertisers. But we need to tell / educate them in the facts about Alexa rank, and then in time ignore it. ;) Take Osho sites, I'll bet you that he would get the highest ad price for the site with the Alexa widget. Even though it's the other that should, he's not only getting a low price for his ads the advertiser is also getting burned by it. So i my book it's hurting the site owners that doesn't target webmasters, and advertisers are buying advertising under false pretenses.
      • Osho says:
Jimmy Agree With You Advertisers Need To Check Google Analytic Stats :)
      • Saket Jajodia says:
Agree.. With all of you.. I don't understand why this Alexa people don't try other source also to get stats as Compete and some others do..
        • jimmy says:
Well as long as ppl are using them the way that they are, is there no reason for them to change. But if wee as webmasters stop using them, and tell advertisers that the stats they found on Alexa about any given website is wrong. Then in time they will have to change in order to survive.
          • Saket Jajodia says:
Totally agree, hope that day comes soon..!!
  46. Mohamed Osam says:
Darn it Jimmy, u beat me into it :) I was thinking of putting together a post on Alexa and Compete and how of a bogus statistical numbers they present. Well, I can't say bogus, but the logic Alexa follows is absolutely misleading. Compete on the other hand is trying hard through what they call a "pioneered use of panel multi-sourcing", still they do NOT represent actual statistical information. They claim they collect data from 2million consumers; yea, and how is that a good thing again? What is really 2million in the world of Internet? Moreover, you are soliciting feedback info rather than collecting actual data. I have been doing some statistical analysis on a few of those sites that claim they do better than the others and comparing that data with actual web service log numbers, what I can say is that Google Analytics sits way on the top in terms of accuracy, and I mean way at the top of the list. Compete needs a long site history for it to even start getting close to accurate. To be honest, I don't care what kind of smart or dumb methodology or algorithm Compete, Alexa, Google, or any of those sites use, my main metric will always be the accuracy of the data they represent. Seeing what all those sites offer today, I can only trust Google, too bad Google Analytics doesn't have a front end web interface like Alexa or Compete to show to your clients. If such info really needed, you can use the Google AdWords as a workaround, they offer a tool where you can check the site "range" of traffic, and in most if not all cases I've looked at, that number is pretty accurate.
    • Jimmy says:
Sorry about beating you to it.! :D Well the statistic isn’t bogus, if and that’s a big if you use it as the statistic of the visit from users on Alexa. But the problem is that’s not how it’s used, a lot of buy/sell ads sites like buysellads and inlinks use Alexa as a tool to calculate what the price of an ad should be thereby given a wrong price. Another thing is as you write they only has 2 million users, and those users are mainly webmasters but the common user doesn’t even know what Alexa is. This means that if your users are everything else than webmasters will your site get a low ranking. Just like the example, which btw is one of my sites. So like you I stick to Google, and when I get contacted about an ad om my sites I send them a screenshot from Google Analytics thereby giving them the right picture. And it would be great if Google made a web interface somewhat like Alexa. And the only reason I have the Alexa rank on my pagerank checker is due to the users wants it. :(
