Google Page Rank Update June 2010 and BlueHost Addon Domain Problems

June 5, 2010 - Last Modified: June 5, 2010 by Hesham Zebida 2,241

google pagerank update

Google Page Rank update was not surprising to me this time at all, I remember last time that no body really cares for it, and I became one of those who think that Google Page ank kind of a big joke and only for decoration! But of course as you might know Google PageRank still something to consider if you are selling advertisements on your blog, it’s actually one of the main things that attract advertisers to your blog or webs site.

Google Page Rank was updated early today, I was talking with Andy of ComLuv network when he notice the change, but I couldn’t recognize it because this time non of my blogs has changed, all remain the same I guess!

I am just thinking about the reason that our blog is not getting a higher PR by Google, probably the blog is leaking it’s PR somewhere, so let me give you some notes that might be the reason:

  • I have changed the blog title recently to “How to Blog and Start a business“
  • I have added a long list of recent posts to the home page and posts
  • I have changed setting on the robot.txt not to index some pages and tag pages
  • I still have a lot of HTML and CSS validation errors and warnings
  • I changed Thesis Theme folder when upgraded to Thesis Theme 1.7
  • I have created a 301 redirect to the domain name without www. To the one with www.
  • I run other sites and blogs on the same shared hosting and I don’t recommend that on BlueHost!

All these points above could heart the Page Rank, especially changing the Theme Theme folder, probably Google will consider that you have changed the whole theme, and probably you did! so if someone had the same problem, plz tell me!

SEO Problems

I will tell you about a problem I discovered recently after talking on Skype with Hash of ShoutMeLoud and he gave me some nice SEO advice that really helped with search engines traffic. After that I discover a big mistake I was doing which is hosting several domain names on BlueHost shared hosting, FamousBloggers.net is actually the primary domain, but for some reason when you host or transfer another domain name on the same shared hosting BlueHost create a sub domain from your primary domain name that you can access the new domain from it, confused? Let me explain to you more!

BlueHost, Add-On Domains, and .htaccess

When I first bought www.mmosocialnetwork.com domain name, I hosted on BlueHost as a beta, and it’s still beta site till now, I was planning to move it to a VPS hosting on the first chance, I just don’t have the time to do it right now. BlueHost created a sub domain from famousbloggers.net for the mosocialnetwork like this:

mmosocialnetwork.famousbloggers.net I didn’t at the beginning that this will give me SEO problems, and probably it’s the main reason that I can not control Page Rank or anything!

I Googled the internet trying to find a solution because customer service will not give a good help with that because it’s not their business to do SEO consult for their clients, I found one article talk about the exact problem I am having, it’s talking about BlueHost, Add-On Domains, and .htaccess, and they author was kind enough to share how he solved the BlueHost addon domain name SEO problem, but unfortunately the codes somehow was not working for me, or maybe I was tired that night and I gave up after some hard tries, and I decided to try again latter!

Why I am sharing this

Google PageRank is not so very important to me like before, but it’s good to get a PR of 5 to feel the power, I am sharing these notes and things happened with me on this blog, so maybe you will come across this post one day and give me some ideas, advice or maybe share your story!

Hopefully this time it wont take them 9 months to update page ranks. Not that im crazy about my blogs getting high page rank, but i wanna see how the pages with my backlinks on are doing.
  2. Tom says:
I actually like what has happened in the latest update (last quarter of 2010). I didn't really notice much change in the April update but the latest has helped me. I am now worried what is coming next.
  3. Vijayraj Reddy says:
ya, Google pagerank is not the major factor now a days and Google has also not updated pagerank since long time...
  4. Jawad Rafique says:
I am using mochahost hosting and using shared hosting and have a lot of sites on same. I have a problem and it looks like hosting is causing this. I promote new product launches and what has happened with me that my last 4 websites which were ranked in top 3, all lost the ranking and are now found on last page or no where on google. Can you advice on this? One of the new site is listed above for which I lost the ranking from # 1 to no where. And what is most interesting is all the websites lost the ranking or disappeared on 2nd or 3rd day of product launch. Your insight on this will be appreciated. Thanks.
    • Kamal Hasa says:
Well I don't think it would be a big problem when compared with the www and non-www issue.
  5. Avery says:
Any of you could tell the next pagerank update? It has been a long time after the June update this year.
    • Hesham says:
I can say that no body knows! really!
  6. Joy says:
Hesham, So maybe PR is nothing more than bragging rights? I started researching how to get a higher page rank recently and I am still confused about it. I think it is all just a mystery and will keep building my site for my end users.
    • Hesham says:
Yes, plz focus on your readers, don't worry about PageRank that much! There is a big difference between Ranking Higher in Google and Google PageRank! PageRank is only a level of rank for you blog in general decided by Google! Search Engine Ranking is the most important thing, this is where SEO plays an important role, this is where traffic comes from! I hope this help!
  7. Giljed Jowes says:
I did not know that the hosting provider can affect the page rank of a website. I've never used shared hosting though, started right away with VPS, not because of high traffic, but because of technical reasons--specifically for my Python based web framework.
    • Hesham says:
Good for you, speed is good for your blog! Also, the problem was not because the shared hosting, but it was because of Add-On Domain names.
  8. Neal Schaffer says:
I ran across this article on Google when looking for information on CommentLuv and how it could negatively affect your Google Page Rank. It's just a hunch, as I am a Disqus user, but a few bloggers who use CommentLuv and drive a lot of traffic still seem to be stuck at PR4 or less...do you think that Google would consider penalizing the PR of CommentLuv-installed blogs? Just curious as to your thought as I couldn't find mention of this possibility anywhere.
    • Hesham says:
Hi Neal, I really don't think that Google penalize any commentluv enabled blog, and probably a good example is comluv.com itself, which is PR 6 and there is also as I remember the blogussion.com which is PR 5, I just think it all depends on the backlinks to your blog/site and commentluv has nothing to do with the penalizing issue, or then you will see all those blog with PR 3 of 4 losing it next update! Your use Disqus, and even with that your main site PR 4, and your blog PR is 3 which leads to the same way of thinking, it's probably depending on how many relevant backlinks you have got, and other 200+ factors! I remember also that almost all SEO tools recommend no more than 100 links on one page, so what I think is commentluv works in a way or another by increasing comments activity on your blog, I have seen some of comments on my blog in Google SERPS while searching for some keywords! do you think Google will pass this if they don't love commentluv?! OK.. but what if comments increased the links more than the recommended number, and your page exceeded 100 comments/links? then the solution is comment pages, just set your comment options to display 50 comments on each page and you are good to go! By the way, I am against Disqus not because it's a bad service (I can not say that at all), but I am just against hosting my comments on any other server, and I prefer to have comments on my own database as I told you it could show in Google SERPS and enhance the blog SEO! (with Disqus this is not possible as I know or at least i didn't see this happening on Disqus enabled blogs).. Also one thing I don't like about Disqus is that I lost a few comments when I exported comments of one my blogs , so I was not feeling good about that! And by the way, I have here god amount of posts that got it's own PR, for example: make your Website more User Friendly - PR5 Guest Blogging Contest - PR4 Content Scrapers & Thieves - PR4 ComLuv new Theme - PR3 Technorati Authority - PR3 Scribe SEO content - PR3 Note: all these posts has tons of comments! Why? simply because these posts got some good amount of backlinks (strong relevant backlinks from authority blogs), and also because I link internally to these specific posts when ever there is a chance! I hope this help!
  9. Morten says:
I dont think the google re-ranking was there yet, i run about 30 pages and till now i did not see any changes. What is a bit strange is the google was quite precise the last couple of times, so i dont know what there are up to this time? Anyway i am sure the re-ranking will happen in the next days Morten
    • Hesham says:
Yes.. there is nothing here yet! waiting....
  10. Nicole says:
I found this post very interesting as I have similar issues. Did you notice that Matt Cutts uses Thesis 1.5. This could confirm your assumption regarding the upgrade to Thesis 1.7. BTW Matt Cutts did relate to HTML and CSS validation errors and did say that it wasn't a big issue.
  11. Marco says:
I think that the next pagerank update will come in begin of July. We all are waiting now.
  12. John says:
I myself just updated my theme in the last two weeks and when I did I went from a PR 4 to a PR N/A, however, I kept my Alexa ranking. It has been a bit frustrating, but then something to work towards to re-rank it, since I did the initial ranking at a 4 in about a month. Thanks for the insight, this has answered a few of my questions on the situation.
  13. Jenny says:
I also don't think this last update was a real one. My PR has remained the same but my back-links have more then doubled. I did however see my page rankings go down for a few days then come back up...It was a weird update.
  14. Geoff says:
Unsure of this latest PR update was that of the normal ones. Was a quiet release and many reports indicate it was penalty related.
    • Hesham says:
I am not sure now as well, because my internal pages PR came back after a few days!! So, maybe there were some problems or what ever, and the main update should be next month!
      • Geoff says:
I've got to admit, my personal prediction for the next PR update after the last was 3rd – 5th July 2010. Will be keeping a close eye out for any PR changes around this period :)
  15. ZK says:
People says that they do not care about page rank but when they got higher page rank than they add post (like you did :) and when they get less they start saying that who the hell care about this. But people who sell links their main business depends on this. If they get higher PR than means profit and if less than loss ... Another place where PR is really effective is buying and selling websites ...
    • Hesham says:
I always get good responds to Google PR posts, what that means? ;)
  16. Mitko says:
The last Update was in April, so supposedly this is a just a minor update, as someone mentioned above the major would probably be in July.
    • Hesham says:
That's true Mitko, let's hope the good ;)
      • Mitko says:
As far as I know, Google's Internal PR changes daily. Thus if my search traffic goes up, I am guessing my PR has gone up as well. At least that's how I think it works
        • Hesham says:
          It's a big puzzle my friend ;)
  17. poch says:
Maybe this is related to Karen Emanuelson's problem posted at LinkedIn: Your Help Needed: WordPress Log-In Password Problem Is anyone else having a problem logging on to their WordPress.org blog? Each time I log in to my blog, I need to request a new password. My webhosting provider, BlueHost, suggests I switch from Internet Explorer to Firefox. That seems like an extreme possible solution. I'm looking for a work-around for the problem. Any other suggestions?
    • Hesham says:
      Nope, I don't have a problem!
    • Jason Jumat says:
Are you using the newest version? I have problems in uploading images to my blog from the newest Wordpress version 2.9.2. You have no idea how I wished I hadn't upgraded. It's not always the best choice to upgrade the soonest a newer version comes out. It always tend to have lots of bugs . . . and I simply don't have the time to sort this out (Where do I start? By deactivating and reactivating all of the 23 plugins on my blog?) Rather would want to downgrade to Wordpress 2.9.1 Would suggest this to you too: If this is caused by a bug on the new version of Wordpress, that is.
      • Hesham says:
I am using the new version on other blogs of mine, this blog also is using 2.9.2 ! and all is working fine so far!! I even run WP 3.0 on another blog! You can request/reset your password Also you can try to switch to normal images upload (Browser uploader) Not Flash uploader that sometimes cause problems!
  18. Jason Jumat says:
I am astounded that there was an update of the Google PR Toolbar! I was always under the impression that Google updates at the end of every last day of a quarter. According what I believe: Shouldn't the next PR update in toolbar reflect on 1 July?
  19. Nasrul Hanis says:
I read about some bloggers and webmasters condemning but for me PageRank always bring good news for me as I use PR as the key performance index for my sites. For example, particular PR determines any of my blogs are suitable for making money from paid posts, selling ads and etc. Sometimes they might get it wrong when updating so don't rely too much on one source and always be creative in exploring! :D
  20. Daniel Vill Elux says:
I am currently using Bluehost for my blogs too and I am not aware that there's an SEO problem when you host different blogs in one hosting account. I guess, I need to research about it more.
  21. Kharim says:
Thank God I have been able to keep my PR at 2 :)
  22. Ajinkya says:
Yeah , a minor update i guess . Because this time , almost no one's BLOG'S PR changed , even neither yours nor mine blog's PR did not change , i wonder which are rare blogs . Google should decide the time so that bloggers can have a time limit to manage the task ! WHy give sudden surprises and shocks :P
  23. element321 says:
Hesham, My site hasn't changed. But I haven't really looked into much. I will look more into later this week. To me, this isn't really that big of a deal...
  24. Dudu says:
Some time ago I brought an account on BlueHost to host some domains that had a good PR but I wasn't updating them so frequently. I thought that they could be used to pass some PR to other sites, but after some time they all had lost 2/3 of their PR and I'm sure that it happened because BH put they all as sub domains.
  25. Tia says:
This is incredibly helpful - especially the note about hosting multiple sites on one BlueHost account. It makes total sense. For me, the question is when and not if I'll just split up the accounts and make their own hosting accounts for them. To me, that is better than doing all the 301 re-direct mess! It's not cheap but then again most things that are of quality are not cheap. ;)
  26. Dan Keller says:
I am still looking...I have not seen any changes on my 2 blogs , both still pr 3. I am working hard to get TycoonBlogger up in PR so hopefully they are still updating and just did not get around to me yet. :-) I am not going to lie, I want to increase my PR!
  27. Colleen says:
We have a few YouTube accounts and one received a PR3, the other a PR4, so I was pleasantly pleased with that. Our main website was unchanged, but I agree Hesham, pagerank is not what it used to be. Google is factoring in too many other things nowadays.
  28. Wynne says:
I don't know why you are even checking page rank. Most seo experts agree that google toolbar page rank is notoriously unreliable and should not be taken seriously at all. However, traffic is important (especially targeted traffic), and is the key thing you should be measuring.
  29. Murlu says:
Thanks for pointing out the add-on domain. I noticed this on a few of my add-on domains but I didn't think a second about the SEO aspect of it - it makes sense though. I'll have to look into changing this. Looking forward to see some kind of bump from the big G. PR doesn't mean a lot to me but it still gives you a nice bit of inspiration.
  30. Faust says:
I've seen no PR changes of some of my sites I manage it still remains the same...
    • Hesham says:
Probably will take some time, have you checked your posts and pages PR if you have any old posts that has a PR before?!
  31. Asad says:
Mine hasn't changed yet.The last PR update was in April.I though that Google will update PR at the end of June but you can expect anything from Google.Google usually update PR after 3 or 4 months.
    • Hesham says:
I also thought the same, but there is something happening in here! Google update every 3 months, 4 times a year!
  32. Michael Aulia says:
Or maybe the PR hasn't been updated to your site yet, who knows :) it takes some time for Google to update
    • Hesham says:
I see the update on internal posts has some changes, some of the oldest got PR and a lot of the newest has nothing! this is why I sure that the update is going now!
      • Latief says:
Yes, I believe this is really an up date because I just check my other blogs, some of them get their first Page Rank. Thank for the info Hesham. By the way I mentioned your name on my latest post about this up date :)
        • Hesham says:
Great, thanks for the confirmation Latief! Also thank you so much for the mention on your post :) and congrats for the updates on your other blogs!
  33. Gouri says:
This update does not seem to be a major one. May be we will have another one soon.
    • Hesham says:
      Probably... let's see!
      • Michael P says:
Ya, I dont think it has updated. Because I get 30 unique views a day. And 100 views overall (not counting me). And my page rank is still 0. Let's just cross our fingers.
  34. Latief says:
I thought it'll be the end of June Hesham, no wonder you left comment and congrats me for PR 3, lol! With PR 3 I still can make money, its OK because I still the update is at the end of June.
  35. Mars Dorian says:
I didn't give a crap about page rank before, but you got me interested in it the first time ;) Your Alexa is still through the roof, Hesham. It's ballistic. I don't think you have anything to worry about ;)
  36. SEO Company says:
i also seen some of site but i think it's minor update, not in all site ...i seen one of my competitors web site lost pr 5 to PR1!!
  37. Blazing Minds says:
I'll have to keep an eye out for this, I haven't seen any updates yet, so fingers crossed for an increase ;)
    • Hesham says:
lol I started to feel alone here ;) I hope I am write, but .. yes I have lost some PageRank of a few pages here, also Andy was telling me about it earlier, so.. it must be going through the cables now, depending on where you host your blog!
      • Blazing Minds says:
Mine is in the UK, so we'll probably get it last ;) I've got my fingers crossed though, if it goes up it might help with the Ad side of things on the blog ;)
        • Hesham says:
Yes Karen, I understand what you mean, I wish you good luck! I will get some rest now! and tomorrow is .. I mean today is another day :)
  38. Dev says:
Hey Hesham, Nice Post man. I don't know people think about pagerank.. ! great example is.. melvin his blog has PR 0 and still he blogging and making some good income. yeah, i have to agree with you on "Google PageRank still something to consider if you are selling advertisements on your blog". !! :) !!! . Btw. Harsh have awesome knowledge about seo, his blog is on the top for keywords related to blogging.. :) ! Thanks for sharing this great Post. ~Dev
    • Hesham says:
Well .. lol.. now you know that there is people think about PageRank ;) so it's important for some bloggers Yes.. Harsh has good experience, and also he is a very nice and helpful person!
  39. Tek3D says:
I haven't seen any changes yet. Are you sure about this information?
    • Hesham says:
Yes I am sure! it actually started the update more than 10 hours back or so!
  40. vector graphics says:
I agree with you. I lost ranking when i shifted all post to another user.. From Kevin S to Annanta S. Many times i lost my PR but i was not aware of the cause but last time when i changed my keywords and title i lost my PR. I even lost site-link from Google homepage.
    • Hesham says:
The good thing is you are used to it :) Thanks buddy for stepping by!
  41. Thomas says:
I am not seeing any changes from my end. Wondering if it is still making it's way across to Australia, but from what I'm reading on forums it doesn't seem to be a very big update.
    • Hesham says:
Yes.. it's updating.. it's on the way! I think the full update can take more than 2 days, but I am not sure of that!
      • Thomas says:
I am looking forward to seeing some fruit to all the hard work I've put in over the last 3 months! BTW, you have a typo in your bullet posts. You say "Stat a business“. Thought you would like to know.
        • Hesham says:
I wish you the best! Thanks to pointing me to the typo, I hardly can open my eyes, it's 6 am here and didn't sleep yet!
          • Thomas says:
That is crazy! I used to be able to work through to 3am, but these days it's more like midnight.
    • SEO Company says:
Yaa it's minor update i also seen some of sites change page rank...
      • Dana says:
Yes, it is a minor update since I see many other blog's PR do not change at all.
        • Hesham says:
If this is the case then that's cool :)
        • Franklin Manuel says:
I too think, its a minor page rank update...we might see a major update by July 15
          • SEO Company says:
Exactly only google know exact date we can only predict and my next prediction for major PR update will come in July.
