Do Facebook Ads Work?

January 6, 2013 - Last Modified: February 15, 2013 by Hesham Zebida 5,718

Many people -especially internet marketers- are curious to know whither Facebook Ads work or it’s just another way of wasting money compared to Google Adwords, which proven it works.

Facebook’s strategy is based on the premise that “social” is the future of online advertising. It’s the idea that recommendations from friends and companies alike are going to be more effective than traditional display advertising at driving consumer behavior.

That’s the theory, anyway. But is it true?

Do Facebook Ads Even Work?

I actually don’t know, but I would love to discover the truth, especially that I see many people claim to make money on Facebook.

I found this infographic that shows Google Ads vs Facebook ads, looks like both advertisement platforms works, but which one is better?!

Facebook ads vs Google Ads

What’s your experience?

Have you tried Facebook Ads or Google Adwords ? What’s your experience?

You'd be surprised just how successful Facebook advertising can be. In a former life, as one example, we had a large University looking to fill their respective enrollment pipeline for the upcoming period. We used Facebook as well as some split testing and rotational graphics and text and the relative minor costs for the campaign proved highly successful and profitable. Like any advertising, pick the niche, copywrite for the market and drive the ads using relative market segments and filters.

I've tried facebook ads for my blog. It's a great and quick way to get new "likes" but that's what it's good for (in my experience). I didn't get the interaction and engagement I was hoping for and not paying for facebook ads again.
  3. Alexander Kloeble says:
Well, google since it own youtube has a lot of more options to advertise than facebook. Still facebook has got a lot of members and could also pay off in some cases. youtube is the secound biggest search engine after google, and and nwo offering adwords for videos. Payed video ad´s will be the next big trend. there are companies that can produce videos for companies at low cost.

Great infographic. I found Facebook ads are great. Before the conversion pixel came in I think a lot of people didn't actually realize the effect they were having, but now I'm guessing we'll see more businesses heading back to FB to give their ads another shot.

Don't know much but i think google adwards is still far much better than the facebook adds. But Facebook adds are also good.
  6. Suzanne says:
Back in the day I tried FB ads. It was not a good medium for what I was trying to sell and I just did not know enough about it at the time. These days I'm sure things are different. As the infographic points out, ad formats on FB are not that great. I would prefer to have a larger image.

Recently I've been doing quite a bit of Facebook PPC campaigns to test out some different offers. Aside from the approval process of facebook my results have been pretty good. I'm getting a pretty high CTR and they are converting to sales at 23% which is great considering I only pay on average about .12 cents per click. I think where most people go wrong is they don't target well on FB. You really don't want your audience to be more than 20,000. That will increase your CTR and lower the price you pay.

Great infographics! I haven't done much with FB as far as advertising and like others have used Google for some time with good results BUT having said that, I am trying to diversify my income and not count on just one or two different things for bringing in income. So I think I might work a bit more on the FB ads, and yes Social Marketing is the way to go these days! Thanks for the post, it really did give me something to think about!

I haven't tried FB ads but I've been stuck to Google AdWords for quite a while and find it quite effective. I'm not selling anything via web so cannot tell whether it helps building sales yet I see a considerable increase of visit on my page. It's a niche business, so every new visitor counts and AdWords seem to do their job.

I will go for Adsense as I have used both ads network. Facebook sent me very limited visitors and the conversion rate was very low comparing to the number of visitors. When I tried Adsense with same budget, content and keyword which gave me good numbers visitors with decent conversion rate.
  11. Tushar says:
I prefer Google ads than Facebook because it is targeted. Google displayed its ads in Gmail, Blogger, Search Engines. So Google ads is the pick.

Hi Hesham! I have one thing I'd like to share bout facebook ads. I have used them to promote my website which was getting around 20 organic views per day but i wanted even more. So I tried facebook ads and what happened. I lost 20€ and my website went from first page to "google dance". And it needed 2 months to climb back to page 1 for targeted keyword. Since then i promised myself never to use ads of any kind again cause i believe ads can hurt your websites ranking. Thanks again for the great article and see you around! Bye :)
  13. Monique Bowen says:
On my blog I compiled an article with results from 25 bloggers/entrepreneurs who had advertised on Facebook using the Promoted Posts option. Most advertisers were unimpressed by the results. Some even claimed that Facebook was using shady methods to charge them more. But a few were quite happy with how their campaigns turned out. Testing played a large factor in advertiser satisfaction. Sometimes you just don't get it right the first or second time out. Fortunately Facebook allows you to scale for a large or very small (under $10) campaign. And you can test new stuff practically every day, if you want.
  14. Lisa says:
I tried facebook ads for a couple of my sites. I was able to get people to click through to my FB pages and like them, but never got any conversions out of it. 0.75 - 0.95 cpc is pretty high just to get people to click like on a FB page, so I discontinued the campaigns after about a month.
  15. Ram Shengale says:
Wow great infographics Hesham. I was amazed to see that although facebook has monthly pages views 5 times greater than google, still google's revenue is about three times more than facebook!
  16. qadar says:
The things that I liked about facebook ads is it cheap compared to adwords. You can also target your audience.
  17. bbrian017 says:
Like anything, if you have the money and the right target audience you can create conversions. I've spent some money on Google but not enough to say it worked or not. Also I failed at tracking the ROI with analytics and didn't see it any sales were a result of Google. If I ever spend money again on any online sales campaign I'm definitely seek out some professional advice in regarding to setting it up properly.
  18. Dave Lucas ( says:
Comments really suck here Hesham. I couldn't leave a good one. Got a screen "Please don't spam our blog." What in the hell is it talking about?
    • Hesham Zebida says:
Sorry about that Dave, probably something in the cached pages, I've done some changes, hope it will work for you now.
  19. Sarbjit Singh says:
I'd tried Facebook Adverts, don't know about others but they didn't worked for me. Soon i'm going to try ad words, I'll share my experience later.
  20. Rick says:
Nice infographics! I have tried both ad networks and i still think Google is best. FB ads is more difficult to set up and you have to split test a lot to find out what's working for you. Google has better tools for setting up ads and in my opinion the traffic is more targeted than the FB traffic. Facebook has an interesting low cost option for promoting offers that i tested out, and was pretty effective.
