How to Draft an Impressive Press Release

June 6, 2012 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Shaly Criston

Press Release

Media has emerged as the most effective tool for product promotion. This is the reason for most of the companies to go for press releases. After all it is all about being in the minds of people, letting them know about the newly released product and its benefits. Promotion through press releases is quite different from the normal ad campaigns.

In other modes of promotion you have the freedom of promoting your products openly but in press releases, you have to attract people towards your product and business without letting them know that you want to promote your business.

Many websites on the internet allow you to submit free PR and promote your product. This is an excellent way of product promotion but you have to make sure that the press release is well drafted to catch the attention of the reader. Here are some tips to write an impressive press release.

It should look like news

Do not make it a promotional article. Instead try to make it look like news. Provide necessary data and facts that you consider are beneficial for your customers. Try to provide as much information as you can in the article. It should be written in a formal style. You can take inspiration from articles in the newspapers.

Do not try to sensationalize an otherwise normal news article. Your readers are smart and they will know it once they go through the article. So if you want to maintain a good image of your business in the eyes of your readers it is better not to mislead them.

The title should say it all

Frame a title that best suits the content inside the article. Make sure that it is neither too flowery nor too dull. A balanced title should have a maximum of eight words and should be able to convey what you have to offer in the article.

Promote but in disguise

Nobody is interested in reading an advertisement billboard when they are looking for some news. Make sure that you provide real news in the first paragraph. In the following paragraph you can tell your readers how the new development can be beneficial for them. Make sure that you add these benefits in the middle part of the article because most readers lose interest in an article by the time they reach near the bottom of it.

Press releases are beneficial in keeping your business in the active memory of the readers. Many businesses have understood the potential of press releases and most of them are resorting to expert help for creating and submitting press releases.

There are some professional companies with dedicated websites like www.prnewslead.com which provide assistance in promotion through PR.

The main aim of PR is to keep your readers updated with the innovation in your businesses and help you promote your product. It is suggested to go for a Press release or news article monthly. The more you are able to increase your readership, the better chance you have of improving your popularity and credibility.

What you need to remember is that you should only write and submit a press release when you actually have something newsworthy going on. Don't try and turn a promotion into a press release. It won't work. Also, if it's submitted online it's important to optimize it for the search engines by including keywords.

I need to add in to put in a call to action at the end of the press release to direct readers to your site for them to find out more. However, bear in mind some of the PR do not allow wording like "Click here". Without a call to action, people do not know what to do after finished reading. Cheers, Ming

Hi Shaly, You are perfectly right, choosing the right titles is a real art and we need exercise to master how to write an appropriate press release. I've seen many poor written press releases that is why I really want to avoid the common mistakes.

Thanks for the news tip when writing a promotional article. I think it is good that we include some sort of news or educational information in our promotions. This is an important part of serving the needs of our audience. We cannot expect them to want to buy a product unless it is helping them as well as helping us. Education needs to part of selling.

Hi Shaly, It needs to look like breaking news, current content. Super tips. The press does not usually act like a shill. Nor should you. Create content, usable information, and promote mildly to attract people instead of repelling them. Ryan

Having done press release for few companies I can safely say your title is the deciding factor in getting traffic, publications and sales. Now before doing any press release we brainstorm the title until we come up with a satisfying one because it pays to do the hard work with titles.

Good article, Shaly! --- BUT --- the MOST IMPORTANT component to the press release --- your contact information --- AND --- the MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do AFTER you release is out --- is BE AVAILABLE TO RESPOND TO INQUIRIES --- as SOON AS YOU GET THEM! Not several hours from now --- ASAP --- people miss out on great FREE opportunities to get publicity because they are NOT available when contacted by people reading the press release!
    • Shaly Criston says:
Very rightly said Dave, Contact is something that generate lead. It is not that people aren't available to respond but they don't get the right lead at the right time. The best solution is to give email id at which you are most active at or you check that at least once a day.

Hi Shaly, I'm so bad at doing titles. I'm always second guessing my self title making really is a talent in my opinion. I love your concept of making news look like it's news. I never imagines something so simple would work so well, I guess that's why the"news" has been so successful for so many years.
    • Shaly Criston says:
Thanks you went through the post, It is not that writing headline is tough, just try to get the combination of right word and stay simple. I have a experience in print media too and would love to share that web media is different from Print media. Web media is for world audience, you actually don't know who will be reading (may be student or an entrepreneur or some great scholar) They best way to turn popular is to write for all. Stay simple and easy. However in Print, we know the target reader and hence little difficult English is used. Cheers Shally
