Tips To Keep Your Blog Going While On Vacation

October 8, 2010 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Phil Lusted

Blogging On Vacation

We all like to go on vacations sometimes, but its important to plan ahead before traveling to other parts of the World. These tips should help you organize your blog and essentials you will need when planning your trip.

Before Leaving

Draft Articles

Before heading off on your adventure you should consider planning how your blog is going to be managed, a good start would be to have articles written out ready, write enough articles so your blog is covered for the period of time you will be away, doing this task will allow you to spend more time enjoying the vacation.

Schedule Articles

WordPress has a handy option integrated allowing you the ability of scheduling your draft posts to be published on a certain date and time, all you have to do is input the specific time and date you want the article to be submitted and WordPress will automatically publish your scheduled articles.

Auto Email Responses

Its important to put together a small auto email response note explaining you are on vacation for a set period of time specifying the dates you are gone and will be returning. This way anyone who emails you while you are absence will be notified, that way people contacting you wont feel like you are ignoring them.

Trusted Friends

While you are gone, consider having someone with experience to watch over your blog just to make sure everything is running smoothly, therefore if something goes badly your trusted blogger friend can see to the matter, or contact you if needed in emergency.

What to take on your trip

Laptop

If you have a Laptop, take it with you just in case you have any emergencies that need seeing to, also handy for checking up on comments and replying to them at the end of your day. Though make sure where your traveling to has internet wifi.

Cell Phone

Another handy tool, most people these days dont go anywere without their cell. Very good for contacting people if needed to be, also good for checking up on Emails while abroad.

Login / Passwords

Not sure about you but when it comes to passwords, I have so many, sometimes I forget, write them somewhere or keep them stored safely so if you do in fact forget login details you wont be in trouble since you brought them safely with you.

Are you going to be taking a vacation this year? How do you plan to prepare for the trip?

Hi Phil! Super tips here! The email responder is quite possibly one of the greatest assets when going on vacation. Will keep people up-to-date and not wondering what the heck happened to ya. Thanks for this!
  2. Patrick says:
would you ever consider guest bloggers during this time or does this fall under trusted friends?

"Though make sure where your traveling to has internet wifi." Should have been "you're," right? Another helpful typo alert from the Friendly Hometown Proofreader. :-)
  4. TJ McDowell says:
What kind of things constitute an emergency response for you? If you have your voicemail and email indicating you're on vacation, do you just let most of the client "crisis" issues wait until you get back?

    Really good tips. Congrats !
  6. Dennis Edell says:
I like the trusted colleague idea, maybe a phone nearby. Other then that, if I holiday, that's it...holiday, period. Btw, I haven't owned, nor missed a cell phone in 20yrs. ;)
  7. Robert says:
I went away for 10 days during the summer and had no internet access what so ever, so I had to schedule a couple of posts before I left, I couldn't reply to any comments or anything but people seemed happy enough with just getting a new post ever 2 0r 3 days

Vacations can definitely prove problematic for one's blogging business. Fortunately for the time I'm involved with blogging, I had just one short five day vacation. Even though those were just five days, taking care of my blog was definitely a daunting task. Having a laptop when you are on trip is undoubtedly a must. Otherwise you need to go to those internet-cafes, which is by far not the best choice. Really liked the article Phil! :) Cheers!
  9. Kimi says:
I would schedule my post for the vacation time, and leave the laptop at home :D If i am on vacation, i also want to be free from online world. Thanks for the great tips.
  10. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Phil, You write a blog post and say; I’m on vacation for the next 10 days and am traveling now. Vacation means free from job: Leave your laptop and mobile phone at home, they need also holidays. Don’t think about job. Have a nice vacation.
  11. Latief says:
This is cool bro, Schedule Articles is really awesome ;)
  12. Mark Walker says:
I really like the word press app for the iPad. I guess that's if you wanna work on vacation ;)
  13. Pankaj Gupta says:
Yes Currently I am using Scheduled Posting and it is really helping a lot :-) Thank you for sharing other facts.
  14. Alex says:
Very useful for those who don't think about vacations when they are in the blogging business. Maybe your post can convince them that they can take a well deserved vacation but also keep their blog in tip top shape. For my, the best solution is to leave a very close friend in charge for the weeks I am gone, I always did this and he always helped me out and in exchange I am taking care of his blog when he is away, it's a win win situation. Yeah, I know that there can be a situation when we both want to go away, but that hasn't happened yet.

Great Tips for the bloggers working without team or employees. Its very difficult to sometime to go for vacation and worry about the performance of your blog and other activities. The tips you have provided are really good so that anyone going for vacation will be well prepared in advance. The most important thing you should do is carry your laptop to operate in some emergency. But yes, don't spoil your vacation because you are there to relax with your family and friends.
  16. The Bad Blogger says:
Whenever I go for vacation, what I usually do, is prepare articles and schedule it, along side with auto email responding telling them when I will be back. Well, if you have a trusted friend, then you can trust your blog for him or her to take care, but I would like to advice those who actually use this method, and that is "do not use this method" Here's why, no one can be trusted, every decision you make, changes almost anything, he can be your very best friend for years, but when it come to taking care of something you precious... well is very hard to say.. I took my blog as one of my asset, other then me, no one can access my asset. Do you think.... your best friend can be trusted?
  17. Patricia says:
Hi Phil Great tips for those who are going on holidays. I'm just new to blogging so won't be scheduling a holiday for awhile. Want to get my biz fully functioning first. Have already thought of a trusted friend who I would get to look after my blog if/when I do get away. Enjoy your break and thanks for the post. Really helpful advice in there. Hey Phil, Great post. I'm using schedule feature from sometime now and it works awesome. I usually ask my friends to write for my blog if i'm out of town ;). Thanks for sharing this great Post Phil. Really great post.
  19. Phil Lusted says:
Indeed Ryan, if im taking a rest from blogging or going away, its always good to have a friend take care of things, someone who knows what they are doing.
  20. Mark says:
Cheers Phil, I'm away for 3 weeks at the end of the month, so I need to put together some posts using the scheduling feature.
  21. Rick LaPoint says:
Good points, Phil. I've been on the road driving through and/or stopping at little cow towns that were literally one block of one street. Depending on where you are going, or traveling through, you may want to bring some kind of telephone modem with you, because that may be the only Internet access you'll have at some places. Before you leave, make sure you lookup the ISP modem 800 number and any local numbers you can find near the areas you will be passing through. The laptop and accessories are mainly for keeping up with new orders and customer service issues. While on vacation, nothing I have to say is so vital to civilization that it can't wait to be posted until I return :-) Rick
  22. Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hello Phil, Great Tips You have got ! The First thing I would do is to write plenty of articles (like you mentioned). Then I would have a notice in all of my pages (So that the readers will know that I am on vacation). I also agree with you on the matter of trusted fellow. Having a good blogger to look over your site is absolutely a must-do. If I was on vacation, I would surely have my laptop and cell ;) Another thing I would do is schedule any guest posts for approval and publication during the vacation. That way you don't have to worry about articles or comments ! Anyway, Thanks for the great article ! I wish you all the very best regarding your blogging career. Jeevan Jacob John Note : Nice to meet you. I hope that we can connect in the future.
    • Phil Lusted says:
Hey Jeevan! Glad you like the article, and thanks for the best wishes! Look forward to seeing you around the blogging world!
  23. John Soares says:
All very sound suggestions here. Regarding passwords, I have a series that I use that are a combination of different words in different languages and numbers; all are different, but I can easily remember them, or get them with one or two guesses. When I went backpacking for several days in August, I wrote about it on my blogs so all my readers would know I wasn't around. When I'm doing a more traditional vacation, I do take my laptop with me so I can check e-mail 3-4 times per week.
    • Phil Lusted says:
Hi John Good thing you can remember passwords. I have so many different ones for different websites and such, sometimes I get confused remembering which password goes with what website! haha. Glad you liked the article!
      • John Soares says:
That's why it's good to have a system for passwords. Of course, that's easy to say, but not so easy to do once you already have 50 different random passwords.
  24. element321 says:
Great post phill. All of your tips are helpful. When out of town, I always take my laptop and know where the wifi hotspots are in town. I try and stop by at least once a day and check in on the sites I maintain... If I know I will be out of town without the time to write articles, I will schedule them. Even when I am not out of town I like to schedule my posts so they don't fall on those days I know are slower than others...
  25. Blazing Minds says:
I've used both the scheduling and the email response when I've been away, though sometimes, it can be a bit daunting trying to catch up when I return, specially with catching up with all the latest comments ;)
  26. Mani Viswanathan says:
Nice tips Phil on your first Guest Article on FB. If a person updates his/her blog weekly thrice, then there won't be much problems. But for a blogger who updates the blog daily, need to check out those points to avoid loosing subscribers, traffic & more.
  27. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Phil, Great post and super tips! When on vacation it's easy to forget some of the blogging essentials like taking your passwords with you, etc. I like your pointer about having a trusted friend keep watch over your blog. Automated systems are developed by humans, who make mistakes ;) Thanks for sharing your insight and have a great day! Ryan
