Do You Optimize And Promote Your Guest Post

November 23, 2010 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Francisco Perez

Guest Post

OK. We all have been through this already. Content is K… and we all should be writing for users and not search engines. How many times have we seen this splattered all over the place? If you ask me, I think I am pretty much “overloaded” with the content is king stuff. I am convinced that I already know about this and so do you 🙂

Putting all this aside, and bearing in mind that valuable content and first writing for your readers is indeed your priority, there is also the matter of why should it not be the best of both worlds. If you write a guest post often and you do your research well, I don’t see any harm in optimizing it and promoting it like crazy. On the contrary, it is good. So let’s run through some things very quickly.

Why do you guest post?

This is maybe another one of those topics that you are already “filled up” with information, but the benefits of guest posting is clearly on the up side. First, and most important, you gain exposure and credibility. Then you get quality backlinks. You tap in the readers base of the blog you are writing for. And many more. Just be sure that when writing a guest post, you read the rules of engagement, which are normally provided by the owner of the blog.

Do you optimize your guest post for SEO?

I am not talking about meta tags and meta descriptions here as the owner of the blog you are writing for should probably be doing that already. I am talking about proper utilization of researched keywords and a compelling “title”. These two are more than good enough to write optimized text. Of course if you are writing here on famousbloggers, you won’t have to worry about that as Hesham uses keyword winner.

Either way, this is just proof of how important you should pay attention to this when writing an article. I always think that writing a guest post should be as if I was writing for my own blog, only better. If you are wondering how can you write and optimize your article at the same time, these 3 step guide to seo writing should get you going.

One final thought. When writing a guest post, you should try to “deep link” your article within the blog you are writing for. Not only it gives a good impression to the owner, you also are saying in a way that you have at the very least read some of their articles. It is a good habit and will be appreciated.

Do you promote your guest post?

Let me ask you one thing. What do you do as soon as you hit that publish button on a recent “killer” article you just wrote on your blog? My guess will be that you promote it like there is no tomorrow, lol. You Tweet it, you stumble it, you share it on amplify, facebook and all those nice social places like mmosocialnetwork. So the next obvious question is, do you the same for your guest post? Simple, and hopefully your answer should be a big YES in all caps. So remember, when you write a guest post and the owner says its live, do your thing.

These are just some few pointers when writing a guest post. There are tons of information out there on how to write effectively and up until recently I also wrote an article on NBB about guest posting strategies you need to know. You really should read it, there are some additional info there that I think you might like.

What say you? Are the points above some things that you worry about when guest posting? Any other ideas on how to make your guest post go viral :)?

It has recently come to my attention that making guest posts in other people's blogs is good for SEO purposes, but this doesn't mean for backlinking purposes. However, I have not been able to verify that this works.. As you can see, it is quite obvious that backlinks coming from a blog post would add a link pointing to your site which is good SEO. However, people are saying that the "number of guest posts" per se in a article or write-up actually helps in ranking the a particular article or site. So, the number of guest posts is another factor in SEO aside from the number of back link pointing to a site.. I have yet to gather evidence on this contention..
    • DiTesco says:
Hi Erik. I am not sure I follow what you are trying to say here but if I understood it correctly, the number of guest post that one can create obviously helps a lot as it provides you with more opportunity to have links pointing to your site, creating more exposure and building relationships. However, it is important to know that a guest post should also receive the same kind of attention as if it where published in your own website. The more the guest post is optimized for SEO the better.
  2. Ryan says:
I usually do guest posts for the backlink and anchor text. I realize that's not exactly the best reason for some since they want to social interaction, but for a lot of niche sites I'll guest post simply for the link. Where else can you get a high ranking site to give you the appropriate anchor text for free?
    • DiTesco says:
That's one of the reasons why it is always recommended to write guest post, although it is not entirely the only reason. If you promote it and someone likes your guest post, it might also get linked to and when this happens, the article gets stronger. The stronger your article gets, the better "juice" you receive. Don't forget that pages are also ranked individually and despite being in a high quality site does not necessarily mean it will get noticed. But then again, everyone has its own agenda, right ;-)
  3. Claire says:
Guest posting is a surefire way of ultimately promoting your site, much like article submissions. But guest posting promotes not just your site through backlinks but also establishes you as also an authority on the subject & site where you posted.
    • DiTesco says:
Hi Claire, I agree with "almost" all your points with the exception of guest posting being similar to article submission. In my opinion guest posting is a lot more powerful and has a more targeted audience than that of article submission. Backlinks from guest post for example, depending, where they are coming form have much more value.
  4. TJ McDowell says:
Do you suggest link building for guest posts? If so, wouldn't it be weird listing someone else's blog as your own?
    • DiTesco says:
Hello TJ. Link building is normally tailored for your own website, I agree and what I am suggesting is to promote your guest post. Promote means, Retweeting, sharing on social networks, bookmarking, and so forth. I don't see anything weird by doing this, as I believe that it is equally important to promote your guest post as much as you would promote your own articles. After all, it is your work that you are promoting, right?
      • TJ McDowell says:
Yea, I'm with you there. I just wasn't sure how far you would take it. Basically, it's like you show up in a magazine article, so you tell the world about the article, but you don't promote the magazine in the same way the magazine would promote themselves.
        • DiTesco says:
Excellent example TJ. Could have not done it better. It is exactly like that, promote the article but not the magazine, the same way the owners of the magazine will do. Glad we got that straighten out :)
  5. satrap says:
I do the same things that I do for my own blog posts for guest posts I write. Though I think when it comes to promoting, I put a little more energy into promoting guest posts than my own blog posts.
    • DiTesco says:
That's what I think that should be really the right thing to do, put more effort in a guest post. After all, you are introducing yourself to the the blog's visitors and while some of them might already know you, some may not, so a good impression always counts and should be started by a "good" promotional campaign.
  6. Isabel Rodrigues - Pro Blogger Journey says:
Yeah it is so very important to optimize and promote your own guest post else you will sooner than later see it die.
    • DiTesco says:
It is indeed important Isabel and if the guest post is some sort of a "pilar" article, all the more reason to constantly promote it. Thanks for taking the time to voice out your opinion.
  7. Chadrack says:
Great you brought this up DiTesco. So far I've written very few guest posts, but every one of them have always recieved some good promotion from my side. Once a guest post goes live I always do a post on my blog informing my readers about it and encouraging them to go and read it. Besides, over time whenever the need arises I do link to such guest posts. Reading your post has also given me the idea of doing a post that will link to all of my guest post. I hope to be updating this post as time goes on. Thanks giving me this idea.
    • DiTesco says:
Hi Chad. Doing a post that links to all of your GP is indeed a good idea and updating them as time goes by is definitely the right way to go. So seems that despite you having written a few GPs (for the moment), promoting them is only the obvious choice. Keep it up and thanks for taking the time to comment
  8. Rick LaPoint says:
Hi DiTesco, I put a lot of effort into writing a guest post, and I display them prominently on my sidebar. A great guest post for a great blog is a badge of honour, and so I aggressively promote them, probably more so than I do for my own pieces on my site. A guest post exposes the writer to a new/wider audience, so every effort should be invested to make sure you present yourself well. The more of your own readers you can bring to the host blog for comments and traffic, the better you look to the new audience, and to the blog owner, who most likely has much more Authority, and can help you down the road if they know you are worth it. I do try to write a guest post in such a way that the host site would benefit SEO wise, and the better you understand the site, the more accurately you will do this. Even so, the host knows better than anyone what they want to accomplish, and is free to tweak as they see fit. If you do a good job, though, they won't have to. It's win-win-win for everyone, if all involved do their part. Sorry, didn't mean to babble, but this is an interesting subject :-) Rick
    • DiTesco says:
Bable away as much as you want as I like the attitude you have chosen when in comes to dealing with Guest Posting. As I said, "treat" your guest post as if it were your own, only better, reflects exactly why using it as a means to achieve an objective. Now the better and respectful this is done, the merrier :)
  9. Latief says:
Nice to see you around and always love to read your article here DiTesco. I always promote my guest post bro, myblogguest have a feature for this, I send my guest post to the forum ;) By the way, thanks for your recommendation at Linkedin, I really appreciate DiTesco. Thanks
    • DiTesco says:
No problem on LinkedIn. I would not recommend you if I did not think you deserved it. As for the GP, keep doing what you are doing as it pays off and the "right" thing to do.
      • Latief says:
I'll keep your golden words DiTesco. Keep doing a good things ;) Thanks.
        • DiTesco says:
I'll keep this is mind Latief :)
  10. Missy says:
It's amazing to me how many will take the time and energy to craft a fantastic guest post, only to let it die a slow painful death - by not promoting it. A simple tweet, a Facebook mention, a link from another blog and so many other methods to reach out and get the word out, yet some don't (or won't) do it.
    • DiTesco says:
Hi Missy. Hence one of the reasons some succeed and some fail. Doing a guest post and not promoting is almost "selfish" like attitude and it is taking no one no where.
  11. Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi DiTesco, Great Topic. Nowadays, I see and read a lot of bloggers writing about why they should guest blog. But rather than writing on the existing information, you were adding more to it. I really appreciate your thought processing. I really agree with you. I promote my guest post but I never look at the SEO, but from now on, I will try to do it. Thanks for the tips !
    • DiTesco says:
Hi Jeevan. I'm glad I was able to add a little more something for you. That is really great when you write something that already many have talked about and yet, an extra touch still matters. Thanks
  12. Kimi says:
Hi DiTesco, Very informative post and useful advice for me to pay attention when i create a guest post one day. Thank you!.
    • DiTesco says:
Hi Kimi. Glad you liked it. Guest posts one day? What's holding you back?
      • Kimi says:
I am very busy, i don't have time at the moment :(
        • DiTesco says:
That's a pity, but I'm sure that one day you'll find a way to make time. It's good for everyone. Thanks..
  13. Kevin Martineau says:
When I guest post I do exactly what you have suggested. I want the blog that I am posting on to get as much traffic as it can. I really don't get people who guest post and then do nothing to promote it. I have a question for you: When you guest post is it proper etiquette to write a teaser on your blog? I used to do this but now I don't. My reasoning: I want to promote the guest post and not my teaser post. What do you think?
    • DiTesco says:
Provided you link your teaser post to your guest post, I don't see any reason why not. Actually I think that if your teaser gets popular, then you are indirectly promoting your guest post. I'll do it without a doubt. There are other people who thinks that a specific page mentioning all their guest post could also work. In my opinion if you are able to write a post and include somehow the teaser in there all the better.
  14. Dan Lew says:
Fantastic post and coincidentally I wrote an article about Guest posting earlier and yes optimizing your keywords for your titles not only for your own blog but guest posts as well is a must!
    • DiTesco says:
Hello Dan. Thanks a bunch for your compliment. This coming from a person like you always feels great. Thanks for stopping by.
      • Dan Lew says:
It is a pleasure DiTesco, I like what you are doing, keep up the great work!
        • DiTesco says:
Thanks again Dan for the compliment. Happy 2011 to you and your love ones.
  15. Andy says:
I can't believe people have to be told to promote their own guest posts! Great post though, complete with a healthy dose of common sense.
    • DiTesco says:
Hi Andy. Just like everything else in life, it is learning curve. Some know what to do, and some need to know what to do. The most important aspect is "do you do it", do you take action? Knowing is one thing and doing it is a different ball game and I think that in a way this serves as a reminder as well.
  16. Mani Viswanathan says:
Though I havn't started Guest Posting yet, I think the main intension of Guest posting is to get lot of hits on your blog from a famous blog where you guest post. So the more you promote that post the more hits you get.
    • DiTesco says:
Hi Mani. I will have to disagree on that "main" purpose you mentioned. While I believe that it is a benefit, the primary is to gain exposure and credibility.
  17. Estava Morioka says:
Thanks for this advice DiTesco, guest posting will be the next big move for me and I'm looking for guidelines on how to get the most out of it. This is perfect.
    • DiTesco says:
Good to see you here Estava. Glad yo found this useful. Don't forget to look at the post on NBB. That will complement this one. Good luck on your next "big move". The community will help :)
  18. Mayur says:
Guest post or regular blog post, one should always optimize it to get traffic, because that is what guest posts are for. But that thing you said about writing content for users and not search engines, i agree but there is a better time for that. When a blog is new, it has a less readership so the posts need to be optimized better and yeah the focus should be on search engines to gain traffic a bit more than users. Once you get a consistent readership, then no matter what you write (as long as its not totally off the track), it will always be read by hundreds of your loyal readers. Just my thought.
    • DiTesco says:
Agreed Mayur. SEO should always be considered when writing an article. The right dose should always be kept in mind.
  19. Andrew says:
You should promote you guest post as much as you own. If the blog where you are guest posting gets a little more traffic / comments as a result, as the guest poster you are going to be welcome back. I have a page on my blog that links to all my published guest posts as well. Andrew
    • DiTesco says:
Hi Andrew. Very well thought about having a page linking to your guest post. I am guilty of not (yet) doing that, although compensate by promoting the article like crazy :)
  20. Devesh - WordPress Hacks says:
Hey Francisco Great Post dude. You've made some great points. When ever i write guest post i promote it like any other post. Anyways, Thanks for sharing this awesome post man.
    • DiTesco says:
You are welcome Devesh and keep it exactly like that. Treat your guest post like your own.
  21. vipin says:
I have heard from before about the advantages of guest posting. But I havent started thinking about how to make a blog post good. This is a good guide to it. Since my blog is very new I dont want to start guest posting now. I have to get some contents on y site for now. Also I feel , if you are not a popular blogger there is less chance than your posts will be approved.
    • DiTesco says:
Hello Vipin. I think that despite being new, your concern should be that of frequency. Doing it at a pace as your website and brand grows will overcome this and actually even recommended. As per being approved, here's a deal for you. Write a "killer" post and I will publish it on my blog for you. That's all it takes :)
  22. Patricia says:
Hi DiTesco I love what you are saying about guest posting. Just done my first guest post at Rick LaPoint's marketing blog. He asked me after I commented on his commentluv guest post! Apparently he had been visiting my site and checking it out as he saw me commenting everywhere lol I so enjoyed it although I was a bit nervous as Rick is an accomplished wordsmith and a geek too IMHO, so hoped my post would be up to the standard on his site. I promoted the post as much as on my own blog and Rick got to meet many of my friends who came over and left comments. For me, I was hoping to introduce as many people as I could to his blog as I find his articles both enlighenting and helpful. Maybe it helps that I love visiting other blogs, meeting new people and don't really understand a lot of the ranking stuff. Only just got to understand about backlinks although Alex Whalley told me I was doing it right lol Great article and thanks for sharing DiTesco. BTW Got asked by several others to GP after they read my 1st one so I'm rapt. Patricia Perth Australia
    • DiTesco says:
Haha, you are all over the place Patricia and that is awesome :) Keep it that way and don't believe anything otherwise. You have touched on something here that is quite important too. When you guest post for someone, that someone can also benefit from your own friends and readers and they would like to see what wrote somewhere else. That is awesome for the blog owner and as you can see, it is a win/win situation. Congrats on your GP, keep it up.
    • Rick LaPoint says:
People have told me I'm a genius for asking Patricia to Guest on my site. If they only knew me better  But the reason I asked here is because she does everything right, and probably should be having people as guests on her own blog. Providing she can find anyone as knowledgeable as herself :-) Her promotion efforts did bring a burst of new traffic to my blog, and it was very exciting--while it lasted. Now people are stuck with just me again... My advice for anyone who wants to be invited to the great blogs, be like Patricia. You know, grow lots of flowers, er, I mean followers. Then storm the gates of your host! Rick
      • DiTesco says:
Lol, I can see the value that Patricia has been for your blog as I have never seen someone as active and social as she is (for a while at least) :). I'm still wondering how you got her to guest post for you, haha. Keep it up.
  23. Extreme John says:
After reading this I realize just how much of a rookie I am when it comes to my guest bloggers, who have been increasing nicely lately. Now I'll look for a few ways to show some more respect.
    • DiTesco says:
Hi John. Good to see you here. You are all but a rookie as far as I am concerned, but I get the point. Have a gr8 day
      • Extreme John says:
I appreciate it D. However when it comes to working with guest bloggers I really am and it's an area I really want to grow my blog in, so I better step up the game a tad.
        • DiTesco says:
Wish you all the best on it John.
  24. wasim ismail says:
Guest posts are great way of building awareness of your talent and your blog. It should be promoted , as you can share the traffic of the website you have written the article for, and get their readers to also subscribe to your blog
    • DiTesco says:
You got that on spot Wasim. "Awareness" of your talent, equals to, showing that you an expert in your filed and doing it the proper way gets you exposure, credibility and ultimately trust.
  25. Lebron says:
I am a little inconsistent. Promoting posts from one network and not from another. But it would take too much time to do both. And I feel it is 50% the writers duty to promote their work on my sites.
    • DiTesco says:
Hi Lebron. 50% each of responsibility is good and it should be that way across the border. I am intrigued as to why you are saying that "you promote post on one network and not on another"?
  26. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Francisco, Guest posts should be treated like a home-based post. Publish only your best stuff. I promote my guest posts as aggressively as my own. When a blogger affords me the privilege of posting on their blog I treat it like any other post.....Promote! Finding the "Why" behind guest posting will usually indicate the quality of the post. When guest posting for all the right reasons you draw visitors. If you're GPing just to get backlinks the work will be substandard, because you're only thinking about yourself and you can never add significant value when thinking inward. Thanks for sharing your insight and have a powerful day! Ryan
    • DiTesco says:
Could not agree with you more Ryan. The message has been delivered well through that image "I Love ME" :) Keep it up and do have a "powerful and productive" day yourself.
  27. Rahul says:
Great topic and very helpful points and tips ! thank you for sharing this :)
    • DiTesco says:
You are welcome Rahul. I hope you found this useful.
