Blogging is Hard Work! It Really is!

September 12, 2010 - Last Modified: September 12, 2010 by Phillip Dews 1,537

Hard Work

Blogging is hard work! It really is! Creating content, any content just for the sake of creating content just won’t cut it anymore! Every blog post out there need to be Good content otherwise what is the point! I have learned a lot over the years while cutting my teeth as a blogger and 1 thing I have learned is that good content can spread virally and make your blog a success!

Social Media, SEO and Keywords are of course important to every blog post. But in my opinion the meat and two veg to the success of your blog lies within the hands of your audience! If your reader loves your content then nothing will stop them spreading your content with others and sending it rocketing virally into the amazing world we call the World Wide Web!

In my second guest post for Famous Bloggers I wish to share with you 9 tips I have gleaned while on my journey to become a successful blogger! I hope you enjoy and learn something new!

1. Passion!

This should be perfectly obvious, every blogger need passion about their chosen niche! If you have no passion about something then it will show in your writing and kill your content! Not only will you not enjoy the experience but your audience will not share it with others! In fact it could have the reverse effect and your readers can tell others not to go to your blog! Try and write something creative that your audience will love and share!

2. Everything changes!

Nothing stands still for long on the World Wide Web! New Topics and Trends are springing up all the time, new ways of doing things come and go!  So you need to be up there with the latest trends! Write about things that are current, new and upcoming! Writing about something from last year is no good as it does not interest your audience anymore. Visit forums related to your topic for the latest trends to see what people are talking about! Which leads me onto…

3. Do your research!

And be knowledgeable! When you decide to write on a certain topic or subject, spend time researching it. Knowledge is the key to writing good content! Wikipedia, Google, Ezine articles are always a good place to start! If you are not knowledgeable on what you are writing then it will show in your post! Your audience is smart enough to see that you have not done your research and will stop reading your post and not share!

4. Quality not Quantity!

Less is more as some people may also say! Never take short cuts on the quality of your post! I can go weeks without writing a post, but every time I do write one I always take my time and make it attention grabbing! I would rather have 1 post of quality content then rushing out 10 posts of dubious content! The quality of your post determines if your reader will stick to the very end of your post as well as deciding to share with others!

5. Catchy headline!

You want to grab your audience attention with a catchy headline! As well as tell them what the post is about! The content “Above the Fold” should be catchy as well to bring your audience in to read more!

6. Relevant Content!

Try not to go off on wild tangents as this can send you into procrastination and you will lose all hope in completing your post! Focus like a laser beam and stick to the subject in hand! Focus on how the post can be useful for your reader, try and help them out by providing tips or tricks about your subject matter! Make it about them and not so much about yourself!

7. Simple and short!

Not all your audience have degrees from Oxford or MIT.  Try and keep your post as simple as possible so a wider audience can understand and appreciate it! You don’t want them to check the dictionary every five minutes! Long paragraphs can make your audience lose interest as well as make your post look to long and ugly!

8. Professional!

Your post should display how much of a professional writer and blogger you are! The more professional your post looks the more respect and trust you will earn! And it will become more likely that your content will go viral around the globe! Always check your post for spelling and grammar mistakes as silly mistakes will make you look unprofessional! Get another pair of eyes that you trust to proof read your post before publishing as this will help you find things you may have missed!

9. Enjoy!

Above all blogging should be an enjoyable experience both for the reader and you the writer! If you do not enjoy writing a blog post then your audience will not enjoy reading it! Go now, Have fun and start your own blog today!

Well this is the end of my post dear reader! Have I missed something out here or do you wish for me to expand on a point above? On a totally different subject I would like to thank the Famous bloggers team for letting me publish this post on his blog for you all to see and hope to write more content for you guys! Discuss?

Very good article, You've stated tips that actually work for all bloggers, not just newbies. I agree, especially with #1 Passion . Just like you said, if the blogger has no passion for writing, and does it only for money or traffic, it will show up in his blog posts, readers will sense that the lack of enthusiasm.
    • Phillip Dews says:
am really glad you enjoyed it Cristina! and thanks for the RT! I actually just wrote a post on Wordpress SEO that took me 11hours of research, writing and making screenshots! now that was a mission, if thats not passion I don't know what is! Cheers -Phillip

Many thanks for all your comment luv! =Phillip
  6. Patricia says:
Being new to blogging I have taken all that you have shared in this post on board. One of the greatest encouragements is you saying you don't post for the sake of it and would rather publish less posts that are quality. I have heaps of ideas for posts for my blog but for the moment I am choosing to post once a week. Gives all my readers time to visit and comment if they want to and I'm not giving them information overload. May increase to twice a week with guest posts to give added interest. Will be over to check out your blog next. That is one of the pluses of visiting blogs and commenting. I am building relationships with other bloggers, learning heaps and finding new blogs which is all very helpful for my blogging journey. Patricia Perth Australia
    • Phillip says:
Hi Patricia! I Totally agree with you there1 one post a week is a great start! one of the things I do is carry around with me a notepad as a blog idea or quote can come up at anytime! I found that I kept forgetting things while I was daydreaming and the answer is a small notpad that stays with me at all times! great start Patricia! =Phillip
  7. James Martell says:
It's nice to see an honest headline "Blogging is Hard Work! It Really is!" Oh how many sales letters have I seen that tells you can make a small fortunate overnight with blogging ...and of course "automatically". Or how about the article spinning software that promises develop 1000 "unique" articles and distribute them all at the "push of a button". Thanks for the refreshing an honest post. I would also say that your first point Passion! is the fuel that is needed to keep you moving forward when you're getting started. James
    • Phillip says:
Hahaha Yea James, I have seen those myself! Although I love clickbank and most of the products available on there! You can reuse a lot of articles and promote plr ebooks which can be quite easy to do, but i think its just the lazy way out! Like i say blogging is hard work but it can be fun and I finds a great sense of pride when people comment on stuff I have written and published. Thanks for your comment James! -Phillip
  8. Luqman says:
Nice tips, I definitely agree with your points, but the most important thing to is passion, if you have passion for your blog, it is the key element to success. Because when you have passion in whatever you do, you exude energy and enthusiasm on it. You become more confident which will lead you to success.
    • Phillip says:
Seems a lot of people like my passion point on here! Totally agree with you Luqman1 thanks for your comment buddy! =Phillip
  9. jared thompson says:
without a passion for a subject or topic you are going to go nowhere, and people are going to sense your not doing it for the right reasons. You can tell a mile off when a writer is simply doing it for the exposure. Be inspired by the things you write about and the rest will help to flow into place.
    • Phillip says:
very True Jared! I find writing in order to get traffic is very difficult but when I put my heart and soul into it then I do get traffic and added value to my blog! thanks for your comment Jared! =phillip
  10. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Phillip, A super breakdown of successful blogging here :) I like the passion tip. Passion precedes greatness in any endeavor. You could publish the most usable content but unless it's back with passion the article will have little appeal. Thanks for sharing your tips. Ryan Biddulph
    • Phillip says:
Yea thanks buddy! glad you liked it! seems to me a lot of people like my passion tip on here! thanks for your comment Ryan and will speak on skype soon! =P
  11. Harriet says:
I agree with all the points made in this blog. I don't currently own my own blog but I can appreciate how difficult it is to keep one going successfully, well done!
    • Phillip says:
Thanks Harriet! Its very easy to set a blog up! my book shows all! =Phillip
  12. Colleen says:
Nice article Phillip. Sometimes I think blogging is more time consuming than it is hard work. "Try and keep your post as simple as possible so a wider audience can understand and appreciate it!" I see too many bloggers guilty of this. I'll see a thousand words that could have been summed up in a third the space. Plus, the worst offenders do not bold or otherwise highlight the key points, of which makes it even more tedious to read and digest.
    • Phillip says:
Hey Colleen! thanks for your comment! I to see many blogger guilty of this as well! why write a post that's a thousand words when it can be written in 500! I love breaking my posts up with different sizes and fonts to high-lite certain points as it makes the post look more interesting! =Phillip
      • Colleen says:
Funny thing is "500" you mention can often be summed up in "250!" :)
  13. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Phillip, So true, so True, an excellent article. I couldn’t write better myself, 10 of 10 points.
    • Phillip says:
Many thanks Lennart for your comment! glad you enjoyed my article! =Phillip
  14. Walter says:
I have been blogging for a year and I must admit that it is indeed hard. Always I am finding ways to put myself on the edge and always I have the thought of giving up. Still, I believe that success in any goal requires hard work, passion and dedication. Your pointers here are very important for I have learned some of them the hard way. Very nice pieces of advice you have shared here. :-)
    • Phillip says:
Well done Walter! try not to give up it can get quite frustrating when it comes to blogging! start of small and post once a week but do keep it up though as you can lose your following if you don't post regularly! try carrying a notepad with you at all times to jot down your ideas! that's what I do and it helps a lot! =Phillip
  15. Maya Mendoza says:
It's great to see someone telling it like it is about blogging. It is hard work. I was reading an article on copyblogger the other day that mentioned that 'good' bloggers will spend between 2 and 10 hours on writing a blog post. I found that comforting and reassuring because I thought I was spending way too long on getting information out to my readers ( I average 3 hours a post) - its worth it though because the more original and relevant my posts are and the better they are put together the more comments and interactivity I am getting (which is encouraging)
    • Phillip says:
I once spent a week writing a post but on average it takes me a few hours to write a post! glad you enjoyed the article! =Phillip
  16. Poonam says:
well said....all the points have true sense ....if you are going to take the training of pro blogger then you must describe each and every tips which you have mentioned above.....very true that blogging is not an easy task, its a challenging role ......
    • Phillip says:
sure is Challenging Poonam! but I do relish a challenge! Especially replying to all the comments on my post! glad you enjoyed the article! -Phillip
  17. Tinh says:
Nothing is easy and blogging is not easy at all. You have listed most of challenges that blogger must face in blogging work but with a right strategy, you will do it and Hesham has done a great job here :-)
    • Phillip says:
Thanks Tinh! Hesham sure has done a very good job here! I cannot wait to write another post for this site! Am happy you enjoyed my post! =Phillip
      • Tinh says:
        As always @Philip :-)
  18. Pumama says:

  19. Aaron says:
Hi Phillip. Welcome to FB! Blogging does take a lot of passion and effort, but you remind us that quality is better than just pushing out worthless posts. A lot of thinking goes into each and every blog post, and you will see the benefits of putting hard work into every single post. Good job.
    • Phillip Dews says:
Cheers Aaron, it sure is but as long as you enjoy what your doing and have passion then its not so much a chore! Cheers for the comment Aaron and thanks for the welcome! -Phillip
  20. Tony Logue says:

  22. Daniel Sharkov says:
I believe that if you are not sure whether an article of yours is good enough, you should better not post it. What's the point in posting regular when the articles are just not worth the read? Visitors will be more disappointed when they see a bad quality article than no new article. That is my way of thinking at least. Other than that, great article - you have provided some strong points there! "4. Quality not Quantity!" - that is what people must understand.
    • Phillip Dews says:
Totally agree with you there Daniel! A good gauge of the quality of a blog post is the feedback it receives and how many! If I am not happy with a post then I will not publish until I am happy with it! I think another pair of eyes to read over it before publishing is also a great idea! Cheers for your comment Daniel! -Phillip Dews
  23. Ben Lang says:
Hey Phill, Great job, glad you made it to Famous Bloggers :) You made some great points, but I must say @Murlu is 100% right. It has to be fun, it can't be just some job. I think though that most bloggers really enjoy what they do which is why there are so many amazing blogs out there :) Enjoy Phill
    • Phillip Dews says:
Cheers Ben, thanks for your comment buddy! Am just loving the path I am on right now and its great to be here finally on Famous Bloggers! I never consider Blogging as a JOB or in other words Just Over Broke but a great Hobbie that I enjoy! Thanks for the comment and keep up the great work buddy! -Phillip
  24. Phillip Dews says:

  25. TJ McDowell says:
Recently I've been trying hard to put more thought into what I'm posting and the quality of the posts. I'm not sure if it's because I'm putting the effort in or if the networking is finally kicking in, but I'm starting to get regular comments on my blog now. For me, that's encouraging because it means people are actually reading what I'm writing!
    • Phillip Dews says:
that's the killer TJ the Quality of the posts out way the quantity! I Always take my time when writing a post and research it thoroughly as well! It's great to see you getting comments finally, I love getting comments on what I have written it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside! will check out your blog buddy and keep up the great work! Remember never give up! -Phillip
  26. Murlu says:
With all the other technical aspects and suggestions aside (1 - 8 are quite awesome!) I think it really comes down to if you're truly having fun. Because let's face it, no-one wants to make their blog into just another job, they want to make it into something that they and their community are enjoying - if you're too serious about your blog to the point that it's causing you stress, step back and jump back in playfully :)
    • Phillip Dews says:
Great points you raised there Murlu. I totally agree! If your not having fun blogging then there is no point whatsoever! The driving force for me is to provide value and have fun on my blogs and not the revenue it creates! Of course the revenue is great but that takes time and effort, its like to old saying goes "From small acorns do mighty oaks grow" Thanks for your comment Murlu! -Phillip
  27. Mani Viswanathan says:
Blogging is certainly hard for those who blog without passion. It's just like doing a think in which we aren't interested. The 4th point you've mentioned is perhaps the most important one. Its always quality which wins over the word count.
    • Phillip Dews says:
Totally agree with you there Mani! Like I have mentioned in my reply comment to @TJ's comment! "Quality Outways Quantity"! Nobody likes second best! Thanks for your comment Mani! -Phillip
  28. Sajib says:
The problem is when you try to write something in your personal blog that supposed no one but a few of your blogger friends care about, it's rather easiest thing to do. (That's why you find my personal blog more active than the one about blogging :D :D ) But if one have passion, it's rather easy to keep blog updated regularly. The points you have stated in the post should make blogging easier. Thanks. These are the tips that work. :D
    • Phillip Dews says:
Thanks Sajib! that's the point of this post to help empower new bloggers with tips and to feed their passion for blogging! I am very passionate about blogging and I want to pass on my passion to you guys as well! Many thanks for your comment Sajib and keep up the great work! -Phillip
      • Sajib says:
You are welcome on board, Phillip (did I overused 'L'? :s )!! I had written a post on FamousBloggers and it was published. Now I'm having a hard time to manage some time to write another post for this site.
        • Phillip Dews says:
cheers buddy! it's a great feeling having a post published on here hey! did not even realize it was published until I checked my twitter account and seen all the [at] mentions about it! been busy all day trying to sort out my own blog! had probs with it all day and had to make a clean install of wordpress whick is why its looking a little basic as yet1 am just glad all my posts are still there though! Cheers buddy! -Phillip
