How Internet Connection Provider Can Hurt your Online Business

June 12, 2010 - Last Modified: June 13, 2010 by Hesham Zebida 1,179

Blogging Scream

I am blogging to the world right now through my T-mobil cell phone internet connection, I have a serious problem now with ComCast Speed internet connection. My internet connection is not stable and driving me crazy while trying to get some work done, and being with no proper access to the internet I am having the most annoying feeling as a serious blogger who makes money from the internet!

When I first started FamousBloggers.net I thought to have a backup plan for every possible problem, one of these backups was to get two different internet connections, so if I have a problem with my main connection, I will not have to be under the mercy of any internet company, I don’t like to be in this situation, looking dumb and waiting for my internet to work again so I can proceed my daily blogging tasks!

I was actually discussing this with my wife earlier while planning my business as I always love to hear her opinion, she is my best friend before became a life partner, so I told her that I think having a backup internet connection might be something I will need, and probably I can do that by connecting my cell phone, and because she understand and believe that I am planing to go BIG with my internet business and I am taking blogging seriously as a business, she agreed with me and I am so lucky to have this backup plan because it was really smart decision!

I finally succeeded today to connect my Qosmio laptop to my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic cell phone after downloading the new Nokia PC Suite application which support Windows 7, this took me about one hour to download the application from my other laptop and then install it and get everything back to work with my cell phone, it’s kind of slow connection but it’s enough to do the work. But I am still upset with ComCast customer care service, and I will tell you why!

Women in the ComCast Customer Care (with respect)

Women in customer services

I hate to say this, but some time we have to say what we don’t like. So.. This is what happened with me and I am going to share with you, and you tell me if I am wrong or Not!

My internet connecting is not stable for the last two weeks, I called Comcast service and a guy answer me and set and appointment, the troubleshooting guy visited me and changed the whole main cable and modem to a new one, the problem seemed to be solved, but after two days I got the same problem again, my internet is disconnecting and contenting back almost every 15 minutes, so I called them again and a lady answered me this time!

I know that women are nice and everything, but some times.. They are…

I explained to her the problem and after that we was discussing about the appointment, she told me that the available visit time is on Wednesday, and that means after two days from the day I was talking to her, also that means I will have the problem for extra 2 days which is not good at all, so I explain to her that my work depends on my connection and I can not wait for two days more, so the lady was cutting the conversion like “Sr. I am telling you that this is the available appointment”, she was like.. take it or leave it!!!

Usually when someone talks to me in a bad way once I will forgive, so I told her OK! I will have to wait then, and we confirmed the appointment! But I was not feeling good by the way she answered me!

I Got NO visit on Wednesday!!

I can NOT believe till now that no body showed on Wednesday from ComCast, and I am still suffering from the same problem till the moment of writing this post, no body even called me to set another date or say sorry!

I called again Today hopefully to get someone to fix this annoying problem, I put in mind if a Woman answered me and talked to me in a bad way again, then I will have to change my tone and tell her that that I don’t want to to talk to any Woman at ComCast customer care anymore because they don’t care! I will ask to connect me with a guy.. a man who can understand me and my needs, a man who respect clients!

This is just a general speak, from my experience with women in customer services -not all of them- they give themselves the right to say whatever to the client or talk in a bad tone like “You are stupid client, and you don’t understand!”.

Anyways, the woman who answered my call was nice enough to hear me, she actually was embarrassed because no body came to fix my internet problem. When we came to the exciting part of setting an appointment for the tech visit I was expecting she will set a visit by tomorrow! But she said on Tuesday! Can you believe that?!

I told her “This is impossible!, I will not wait for three days, you have to send someone today or maximum tomorrow, and after that appointment if my internet connection is not working I will go for another company, I am paying for the 16G to get the highest connection in the area, I pay $76 per month, and I can not believe that I am having problems! I will even NOT pay anything this month if my problem is not solved!”, so she set the appointment to tomorrow after she got the message, I am really upset with ComCast service and I am so serious about moving to another company if this problem is not solved tomorrow!

Yes.. Believe it or not.. I pay more than $100 for the internet!

blogger scream

Probably you know now why I am upset with this issue, and yes.. I am paying more than $100 every month just to connect to the internet, I pay 76$ to ComCast and another $25 -without taxes- to T-mobile to connect my cell phone to be able to check my important emails or reply to someone on the go, and it’s my backup plan to star connected to the internet all the time with no problems.

I do this because my online business is so important to me, I am actually earning from the internet, and I can not have a problem to connect to the internet if even for a few hours, not a whole One day!

I do this so I can serve this blog and our blogging community, I do it because I have to keep blogging and keep all bloggers satisfied by publishing their guest posts on time.

So, this is why it’s so annoying, I believe that I should get a Super service and respect because I pay every month on time for the best service!

Bloggers & Internet Connection

After two weeks of having a bad connection and contacting with ComCast customer service three times trying to fix the problem, I am going to ask YOU for an opinion… so.. plz give me an answer to these questions..

  • How much you are paying for the internet every month?
  • Do you think I should switch to another company or give them another chance?
  • Don’t you agree me that Bloggers must have a good connection to the internet?

I am currently with COX in southern US. No problems here. But, a faulty internet connection, should it happen (and it does occasionally) would drive me absolutely insane. Any service that would give you a stable connection in your area would be worth the money in my opinion. Mark
  2. Jay says:
Yes, this can really mess up your day if you have to be online. Maybe that's why Comcast is so hated across the country.
  3. Suhaib says:
I pay $60/month. It is not a business account. Comcast is the worst service provider one can have. In my residential area, no one offers Internet connectivity through Cable, except Comcast. Therefore, unfortunately, I am stuck with Comcast. Every week at a set time between 6 and 6:30 AM in the morning DNS connectivity will go down for at least 2 hours, twice or thrice a week. Calls to Comcast Customer Service is waste of time, though I do call to get it on record. They always blame it on my modem and arrange a technician, who will come after two days (earliest possible appointment). Technician will trouble shoot whatever crap he likes, and says everything is fine. It is an on going bullshit from Comcast. Verizon FIOS is laying their lines in the area, as soon they are live, I am done with Comcast crap bullshit. I had Concast several years ago in California and it was the same story. I am certain, Comcast does it intentionally to cut bandwidth. It is the most expensive Internet Connectivity bullshit you can buy.
  4. Reynolds Kosloskey says:
Yeah, I have the business class service in Michigan. If you run mail servers, look out! I have several mail servers, as I run websites for friends and whatnot. I have the static IP address, but unlike commercial services like T1, Comcast will *NOT* delegate reverse DNS to your DNS server. This means every single time you add or remove or change a mail server, you'll end up with bounced email and problems unless you call them and manually go through the process of having them set up PTR records. Hassle! If you're going to advertise a business internet solution with static IP addresses, at least support the functionality one would expect from such a service.

I have had packet loss issues since day one with Comcast. 4 tech calls and a supervisor. Calling did not get the issue fixed. 2 resources helped the most. Frank Eliason on Twitter @comcastcares and by posting on dslreports.com on the Comcast forum. There is also a special help forum where one of Frank's staff interacts directly. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/comcastdirect I posted my dilemma on the public Comcast forum and the Marketing Director for Atlanta contacted me there with an IM. As soon as it became apparent that support was not going to get this fixed the usual route I contacted her and had a supervisor out within 2 hours. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. When Comcast works, its blazing. If I get a few months without issue I am switching the phone over. Going into day 2 without an issue. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Your internet service provider doesn't seem very professional when they say they would send someone out (by appointment) and technician comes out to repair your internet access. This have happened to me previously. But my line-rental company (Telkom) came to fix my line the following morning. I got a wireless 3G modem as a backup afterwards. Even though they aren't the safest internet connection (opposed to a safe fixed DSL line) it can always come in handy when there's a crisis with your main internet connection.

I have wrote two posts about HughesNet and their horrible service (I've linked 1 below with Comment Luv) ....so whatever you do-don't go with them! ;-) I'll have a post going up sometime this month showing how I destroy my equipment now that my contract is fulfilled and I'm rid of them. Sorry about your issues!!
  9. Dennis Edell says:
My cable company does a fantastic job with high-speed connection. Aside from cable itself going down a couple times per year; no problems. Of course when it does go down, it is a big problem. My Internet, TV, and Phone are all connected to it! lol
  10. Asad says:
Hesham lost of internet connection really frustrates me. Infact, this frustrates every serious blogger who earns from blogging.I am using 3MB connection for $14 per month. It is a fiber optic connection and i didn't experience any major problem with them in the past . I thin after paying so much for the internet you deserved a better service but all is well that ends well :).
  11. Julius Kuhn-Regnier says:
As I've mentioned Hesham I had this happening to me several times even though I don't pay as much as you pay for the Internet. I pay around 6 euros per month but soon I will probably pay between 6-10. It's so bad to have trouble with your Internet connection. You can't really do anything about it and it's so annoying. Hope everything is better by now.
    • Hesham says:
Yes buddy, I was actually remembering you when all this was happening to me, and I said to my self "mmm.. all our team will be with no internet or what?!" ;)
  12. derek says:
I hear you on the comcast customer service people and comcast in general. For the past 2 weeks, my cable service is a little whacky. I watch t.v. and every 10 minutes i loose the signal. Once and awhile my internet connection goes down for a few minutes. This can be really annoying after i type up a reply for a forum or writing a review on my blog. I don't like wasting my type writing something and then poof the connection is lost with the information i just typed. Few days ago, i copped an attitude with a comcast tech. I have am paying for there triple play package with hight speed internet and still i get sometimes an interuption in my service. To add onto the mess i am dealing with right now, on my bill they been charging me for the dvd service that i have not used at all since i got this new service at my house i moved into 2 years ago. The customer service said, i have a dvr box and hell, i never ordered one when i first got my service at the new house. I don't watch t.v. that much because i am online a lot. I told them, i never wanted the dvr service and never ordered it. I want it off my bill and a credit for the extra $15 i have been paying for 6 months since my 1 year promotional offer expired. I will admit, i don't look that deep into the bill when i get it. Force of habit, just looking at the dollar amount and writing a check. But i am trying to find out where i am wasting all my money and well comcast is my focus now. I pay all this money for the triple play package and have 1 service i never ordered and getting billed for, few times a day i my signal get's lost and in the middle of watching a t.v. show the t.v. goes black for a minute and comes back and also internet connection that goes in and out once and awhile. Bloody hell, i just want to yell at the customer service techs, but i am taking a few days to calm down and come up with a plan for how i will deal with them. I have been a customer for 5 years with them and this my second house in using them. Feels good to vent a little about comcast and thanks for posting your issue's with them on the blog. I just found the number for the field tech that hooked up my service and going to give him a call today or drop a message. I remember he was a nice person to talk to. Customer service people have attitudes or just idiots that do not listen to the customer. Just like in a online business, you build a reputation on customer service. I have dropped a hosting company because of there poor customer service. Good luck with everything, i feel better just venting and kept typing what i was thinking. lol

I understand your frustration and seriously without proper internet connection it's hard to survive online business. I recently Shifted to a new apartment and for 7 days I had no internet connection.. Along with my blog my clients suffered a bit and it was really scary for me.. Though I have a proper office and it took care of everything..but when ever I'm back to my flat .there is no Internet connection.. Finally I ended up getting a data card and mobile Internet....for backup...
    • Hesham says:
Hi Harsh, Congratulations for moving to your new apartment ;) and yes problems happen when some one move to a new place which is not prepared the way you need immediately to be :) I have the ComCast tech guy here now and he is changing cable, modem and almost everything, we are testing hopefully this problem will not hap[pen again! Thanks for stepping by bro!
  14. himanshu says:
i think thisissue is quite serious. in delhi, india we have two main service providers Mtnl and airtel. Both have them has discoonection, loew speed problem etc. Customer service of mtnl is pathetic. they rarely solve ur issue. yes they rarely solve the problem.
    • Hesham says:
Thank you so much Himanshu for sharing this information! It feel good to shout it load by blogging ;)
  15. Nabeel says:
I thought I was the only one involved in an Online Business that was having this problem... First of all thanks Hesham for sharing your experience. Presently I am paying $15 for 1MB Unlimited Package (you didn't mention your speed for $70). Second, yes I have some internet problems sometimes. And a stable and very dependent internet connection is not just necessary for a blogger, it is necessary for every one involved in an online business, every Internet Marketer! But I really don't know whether there is such a thing as 'reliable internet connection'. I think that if there is such a thing, then it might be a whole lot expensive. Even my brother keeps saying that if you are doing an online business, you should have the most stable (expensive) connection. I think you should change your service provider. I am also really fed up with my own internet provider , because every now and then, a problem arises. I will be changing providers soon. Nabeel
    • Hesham says:
I can not agree more with you Nabeel! I have mentioned my internet speed on the post, probably you miss it, it's 16G which is super fast actually, it allows me to watch HD videos online with no problems, and I suppose that here in the States there is reliability because businesses depends on these connections, but most of the big companies has more than one internet provider as a backup so they can switch between them when one service is down, some times they set an automatic switching that indicates the connection! Let me tell you about this, when I was in Egypt I had a 1M connection like yours and it was the worst service I ever had, and it cost me around $20 per month! So, you can see differences between countries , some are good.. many are bad :) Thank you for stepping by and sharing your story! By the way, in what country you are?
      • Nabeel says:
Hi Hesham, Thanks for replying. I am from Pakistan. Sorry I though 16G meant 16GB Bandwidth cap, not the actual speed. I actually don't understand what 16G means? Does it mean 16Gbps? or 16Mbps? What is the actual download speed (in Kb/s) ? Kindest, Nabeel
  16. Typhoon says:
Well that's very annoying even to me sometimes. My internet goes off sometimes and during the rainy season(which is starting soon) it becomes horrible specially when it rains... But when such things happen, I have a backup plan of moving to a very nearby cyber cafe (like 250 meters away) and the owner knows me (as I'm a regular customer :D). The cafe is open about 15hrs everyday so I manage getting online from that cyber when my home internet goes down...(and even when I'm looking to bunk my classes :p) Also, the internet service I'm using at home, is of a local businessman who has taken a popular company's internet connection and then runs his business as internet provider...So in that way, I get customer service instantly and the technical person arrives within 15 minutes if it's my home related problem...and it's damn cheap (about $15 only).
    • Hesham says:
Yeah! you remind me when I first started to know the internet, I was not having a connection at home at that time, internet cyber s was the only way to go! Local business an? this is exactly the same thing in Egypt, locals can make a contract to provide service to a small city for example! this makes the tech guys under your hands! It's nice to read your comments and know more about the internet there ;)
  17. element321 says:
Hesham, I remember a few weeks back you were having the same issues. Crazy, I can't stand Comcast. At any location we were at, we or anyone we knew had issues with them. They have horrible service and even worse customer service. If you can, why not switch over to Verizon FIOS. They are fastest service around. When my service went down, they fixed it over night and they generally can get a service guy out to your place within 24 hours. You may also want to look into Clear. They offer service in your area that is something like 60 bucks a month for life and that includes home WiFi and Mobile service. (not the fastest but maybe mobile service might be better option as a backup) Also you could go to McDonalds or something. They offer free WiFi if you buy food or coffee from them. When our service goes down, I will find a cafe or fast food place with free WiFi and sit there all day if I need to get a lot of work done.
    • Hesham says:
I was about the go crazy, you know me and you know that I am 24 on the internet ;) I agree that ComCast should fix their customer service problems, but the interesting thing that I got a tweet from @comcastcares Frank Eliason a senior director at Comcast National Customer Service and he responded to me quickly and solved some problem and recommenced one of their best tech guys, I am glad now that the internet is working better, still in the testing mode :) I will have to update this post or maybe publishing something to thank Frank for his nice action! it was awesome! I will give them another chance ;) Thank you James for sharing this cool informations
  18. DiTesco says:
    1) I a not sure that can compare rates between the US and Brazil but I too pay roughly that much. Sadly, my internet connection is also very unstable, specially during the peak hours. All in all though I am OK with my current provider as I know that others are worst. 2) Can't help you there, but it seems that if you have an alternative you should give it a try and see if works better for you. I hate services that do not provide timely assistance. 3) If you are a serious blogger and do a lot of online business then a stable and reliable internet connection is a must. Otherwise it could be a disaster.
    • Hesham says:
I am not sure also about the rates but I know that getting a 16G high speed internet connection is actually not available in some courtiers, or you have to pay a lot of money which means only companies can afford it! I am sorry to hear that you are having the same problems and you are also paying too much for the internet which is a pain as an extra monthly cost for our businesses! I am thinking seriously for alternative but I will wait for tomorrow for the tech visit and see if everything is going to work good! DiTesco, you know that we are so serious about our online business, and when you are making a deal online or expecting some advertisers you really don't need problems with you connection as these deals have to be done so fast! Thank you for stepping by, I always appreciate your advice!
      • shiho says:
        1. The internet Connection in my country, vietnam, is very slow, in comparing with other countries, beside that, the ISPs are very bad, they don't care about what their customers think. When My internet connection is corrupted, i have to wait 2 - 3 days after calling for support :( 2. I think you should give them a chance because they're providing internet service for you for months. If the problem isn't solved, you should say goodbye to this company and find another company, which you can rely on and trust in I hope your internet connection is going to be okay soon
        • Hesham says:
I think everything is fine Today after the tech visit, I also got some nice support after publishing this post through Twitter! I will give them another chance :) Thank you for stepping by Shiho, I actually wrote a reply to you before this one (yesterday) and the internet swallow it, so I had to reply to you again ;)
    • Hesham says:
Just thought to tell you that I got some nice support through Twitter yesterday night after publishing this post, I got a tweet from @comcastcares , Frank Eliason a Senior Director at Comcast National Customer Service was so kind to check my connection and the whole area and solved some problems, and today after the tech guy visit everything seems to be better, they changes again everything to brand new stuff! Thank you for the nice retweets ;)
