How To Start Your Internet Marketing Journey

September 23, 2011 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Andrii Demianenko 3,352

Internet Marketing Journey

I’m not sure why you’ve decided to make money online, and not do what the rest of the world does – working at a normal job. But since you are here, let me share some tips on how to start your internet marketing journey.

If you are still in doubt whether making money online is real – yes, it is as real as the Sun and the Earth.

So, how should you start making money?

I’m not sure whether you are/were a gamer, but if you’ve ever played “Lineage 2”, then you will easily understand how the internet marketing world works. At first, you are born as a complete weakling who struggles to gain experience, but after numerous battles you feel more confident in yourself. Sure, you earn some coins along the way, but they aren’t nearly enough to support your “lifestyle”.

After you’ve reached a certain level, you choose a class (specialty) and then you master it till you start becoming stronger and make more coins.

Now coming back to the REAL world… to make money online you will need to learn about different ways to do that. There are so many directions (classes) that you can follow:

  1. Affiliate marketing
  2. Making money with Adsense
  3. Blogging
  4. Article marketing
  5. SEO
  6. Flipping websites
  7. Social media marketing
  8. PPC
  9. CPA marketing
  10. And others…

You Do Not Have To Master Everything

Get a book that describes each of the available methods to make money online and find one that you like the most: if you like the idea of writing – blogging or article marketing will be perfect for you; if you like building connections with people – consider learning social media marketing. But choose only 1 direction (only 1 class, if you will) and stick with it until you master it.

Sadly, no one gave me this tip when I was starting out. First, I tried network marketing (also known as MLM). I sold perfumes and deodorants to people who often said “No” to me or just laughed me out. This really broke my heart and then, after reading “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” I decided to learn stocks ( at age 18). Unsurprisingly, I quit because I was broke… and because I was a quitter.

Then, after accidentally discovering Yaro Starak’s internet marketing blog, I decided to start blogging. Did you know that my current blog “Try To Learn More” was originally about self-development? I wrote and I wrote, but no one seemed to care, and I – you guessed it – quit. And out of desperation, I even sold the blog for $55:

Luckily, the buyer didn’t do anything with my website and I just re-bought this domain after it expired.

I’ve tried almost every method to make money that is available, but because I couldn’t see anything through to the end, I never left “Square one.”

One day I decided to stick with selling websites. I bought many courses on how to tweak WordPress themes and how to write copies. To this day I’m not sure how I did it, but in a month I’ve made $1400, which at that time seemed to me like a miracle; I could actually call myself an internet marketer. That’s why I consider July 3rd to be the beginning of my IM career and I celebrate this day like it is my birthday.

Coming back the main point of this article, choose only 1 direction of Internet Marketing to follow. Stick with it till the bitter end; till you made some decent money (4-5 figure income sounds about right). I know you will feel tempted to jump from one branch of internet marketing to another, but you have to hold on. If you have a friend or a loved one, ask them to give you a kick up your behind if you even dare to give up.

Thank you for reading my article, and would love to hear your thoughts!

I agree that "You Do Not Have To Master Everything" sometimes specializing in one field is better that doing all the task.

Hi there. I have created my blog, but i dont seem to be able to create any traffic. Any Advice would be appreciated.
    • Andrii Demianenko says:
Well, it really depends on the blog. Are you doing affiliate marketing/adsense/cpa or do you want your blog to be huge like "famous bloggers?"
  3. Jamie Northrup says:
I'm so guilty of trying to master several different money making techniques, and although I haven't quit all the other ones, I have decided to master in web consulting, which allows me to meet people, help them succeed, and still keep touch to all the different techniques out there, but it's not always easy keeping up with it all.
  4. Pritam says:
Choosing the right niche is very important for success. If you start in the wrong niche you will get disappointed soon. Use Google Keywords Tool and have a plan for you internet marketing venture.
  5. Phil Taylor says:
Great point. One which I surely needed to hear. I have started well over 20 websites and blogs, only to abandon them when "they didn't work." I tried to do it all, all by myself. I see now that my lack of focus was largely the problem, not any lack of technical skill. I'm now looking to start ONE blog on ONE topic and develop it until it's a success. I can see from other's examples that it can take one-two years, but I've already wasted 10. Enough is enough! Thanks for your posts.

Hey Phil, That's the spirit! Thanks for reading this article.

  7. Ming Jong Tey says:
Hey Andrii, Great to hear the success story from you. In fact, it is very easy to get distracted in the IM world given that there are tons of courses coming out everyday which is the missing link that you need to succeed online. The key is to stay focus and master 1 skill at a time and then move on. Cheers, Ming
  8. Steve says:
To "do it right" making money in internet marketing is a journey. It absolutely takes time. YOu should expect t spend 2-3 years writing in a niche before you "move on" (not that it should take that long to make money...just that is the effort you should put into it to achieve success. In a recent article i spoke about a way to make some money relatively fast. But even there I cautioned because a few of the methods go counter to good long term business practices. To really achieve long term success you DO need to focus and stay focused for a long time.
  9. doug_eike says:
I too have discovered (the hard way) that focus is important. About two years ago, I started a blog, and a year later, I started another one. Until recently, I had been working day and night on both of them and getting nowhere. Then I began to focus on only one of them. Not only is my life more pleasant, but I'm also starting to see a meaningful increase in the traffic on the blog I've kept alive. Unless you began blogging years ago when there was no competition, choosing one approach and sticking with it is the key. Thanks for your insight!

You're welcome. Thank you for reading this article.
  10. David says:
Sticking with it till the bitter end sounds about right but there is also something to be said for knowing when something is not working and quitting or changing course as not all of us are cut out for IM. But it's a fine line. Great article!
    • Andrii Demianenko says:
That is a good point, but where is the line between understanding that something doesn't work and having not done enough to make it work? Usually, people choose the easy way out and apologize their laziness with typical phrases like "it just didn't work for me"
  11. Ardorm says:
Andrii, You have mentioned here such a common problem! I personally always knew I wanted to blog, however, I had this "quiter" problem. Last time it caused me to throw all blogging related things away for about half a year... However, I decided and promised myself that at least once I would come to a logical end, you know 4-5 figure income will indeed do it. Let's see how it turns out ;-)
    • Andrii Demianenko says:
Thank you for reading this article. Good luck and make your dreams come true.
  12. Robert says:
I have to hand it to you, that was some real good solid advice! It's so easy to keep jumping around and trying different things, but by doing so many different things you never actually get good at any of them, you just end up wasting your time!
  13. Grady Pruitt says:
That makes it sound so simple! Just focus on one! IM is such a broad niche that focusing on just one area makes it so much easier. Thanks for sharing!
    • Andrii Demianenko says:
You're welcome mate. Thank you for reading this article
      • Ricardus says:
Ya, I believe that if we focus on what we are good at, it'll bring better results also. It's too broad when it comes to internet marketing niche..
  14. Alan Tay says:
Well, I started by trying to master everything as well.Out of the 9 items on the list, I think I tried to master at least 80% of them. It is not possible for a beginner. I had disappointments everyday when I wake up and see my statistic. I strongly agree that we do not have to master everything out there to be successful.
  15. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Andrii, Great core tip here. Master 1 strategy. Dividing up strategies splits up your power, causing failure in multiple opportunities. Forget about becoming a jack of all trades. Stick to one opportunity. Learn it inside out. Persist in applying simple principles: add value, build relationships. Eventually, you prosper, but only after sticking with one strategy and persisting with it. Thanks! Ryan
    • Andrii Demianenko says:
Hey Ryan, I couldn't have said it better. People are so caught up in becoming good in everything that they lose track of what's important. Thank you for reading this article, mate! Andrii
  16. Mpho Moloi says:
Thank you for this wonderful posting, Andrii. It really gives me hope that I will succeed in this industry if I focus and master one aspect at a time. I must say that, at the moment, I am all over the place trying everything all at once and have not seen any significant results. Your tips made me realize that I need to focus, Thanks once again to you and Mavis Nong. Regards...
    • Andrii Demianenko says:
Hey Mpho, Thank you for reading this article. I really hope you will succeed in this cruel - but also rewarding - business. King regards, Andrii
  17. Tinh says:
Great idea and I love your statement that "you don't need to master everything" actually no one can master everything LOL
    • Andrii Demianenko says:
Hey, You would be surprised at how many people try to master "everything" in Internet Marketing :) Thank you for reading this article. King regards, Andrii
