Does Your Business Need a Social Media Consultant?

September 5, 2012 - Last Modified: March 29, 2014 by Jordan Mendys

Social Media Consultant

Recently, there has been news about the rise of social media, and more importantly the rise in the need for social media consultants. This is mainly due to the role that social media has been playing in marketing ventures. Companies are realizing that as social media grows, they need to take on new tasks to stay current with the trends. But there is importance and gravitas given to these fields, and in turn this position as a consultant has become one of the fastest growing positions.

What is a Social Media Consultant?

For most of us not completely inundated and taken by the internet, consultation in this field might seem strange and new.

These folks might not really understand the power of social media, or that they can harness that power for their business. These are the people that need a consultant the most. Social media consultants understand how the landscape of digital marketing changes every day, and implementing strategies that take those changes into account.

With all of the changes we have seen even in the last 6 months, and all the sites penalized in the latest Google search update, those tasks are difficult for one marketing department, along with all of the other daily marketing tasks, to take on.

What is the Benefit of These Experts?

Internet marketing is still a relatively new arena for most companies to dig into. They know that most people use these outlets for entertainment purposes, but the consultants realize that there are thousands of networks and groups to tap into. They can deliver results for your specific niche. For instance, say you’re a specific satellite service provider, and sales are slipping through traditional markets.

A social media strategist will find a way to make social campaigns that will target groups likely to buy your service. There, in many ways, is no guess work, just hard work to be done.

Also, with the potential and strength of all social outlets, your efforts are essentially unstoppable. Until people decide to drop their social accounts, which is not in the foreseeable future, you will always have an audience. More importantly, new users sign up for these services every day, so your market is literally growing every day.

Having someone that can find the power sources in these tools is invaluable to your company and marketing efforts.

Most importantly, your company will benefit from the all mighty “SEO”. This means that the more your social content and presence is shared, the more relevant your company becomes to search engines when people are looking for industries like yours. This is ultimately the role of the consultant, and having someone that can stay on top of such a turbulent topic as SEO has extreme value to your company.

Hopefully this will guide you on to deciding what you feel you need for your company. Just remember that social media is not going anywhere anytime soon. Having someone that can stay on top of your social efforts will yield a huge benefit for you. More importantly they will take care of these accounts so you can take care of your business.

Hiring a social media consultant to fulfill your business promotion needs can be a good idea. This is beneficial because it will get you started on the right path and save you a lot of time that you might otherwise waste while doing it on your own. However, you should clearly know the goals that you plan to achieve through social media marketing. Thanks.

Building an awareness of the brand through social media consultants will definitely provide you enough awareness. But i guess making your own effort in managing this will make more out of it.Social media sites are a great platform for building awareness and reputation.

Certainly this would be recommended option for most businesses, but not every niche can benefit from social media equally. I guess there are several possible approaches of searching for professional help.

@Jordan I can tell you first hand that IM is not mainstream for many large cap firms. The one that I work for (which is actually a fortune 300) doesn't have a clue about IM. With respect to Social Media, we recently received a company-wide email asking us if we would like to contribute. Its a start I guess. Great post. Mark

I am seriously thinking about hiring someone to create a brand for me on some social media sites as I don't seem to be able to make a go of it myself. I'm assuming the social media consultants are a bit like the SEO experts where you have to weed through the rubbish ones to find the good ones.

Dean, I think that's a good idea, and you do have a good point. We're in an age where everyone wants to call themselves SEO and social media gurus just because they use Facebook a lot. Finding a good one can be difficult, but the hard work ethic might be one of the most important assets to consider.

It is recommended to have a social media consultant who is familiar with your business and its market value. The person should have a good knowledge in the social media and how to make use of it depending on the seasons and the days. I know few people who call them as social media consultants they just dont know how to the business apart of generating the fans or followers using the spam tricks. The person who invests less in the digital marketing and making more use of it and generating the leads towards the business is the right social media consultant. While hiring a person please go through his profile and previous works.

It really depends on what specialization is required. Social Media expertise covers such a large set of skills, knowledge and experience from Marketing and PR through Collaboration and Information Architecture. It is a bit like asking for a doctor on an airplane. It's not those with doctorates in psychology, education or biology that are being summoned it is the doctors of medicine, and there again specialization may not yield the one that is wanted, though most can help. It is also reminiscent of the nineties when businesses were challenged to harness the internet. Without understanding the fundamentals, the opportunities and risks (of both involvement and non-involvement) as applied to each line of business then no purpose or objective can be defined. And activity without purpose is always inefficient and invariably fruitless. Before calling on outside expertise best practice would suggest an analysis of the field and identification of the specific areas of interest (opportunity and risk) so that the appropriate expertise can be brought in. They can then interact with the custodians of planning, change and operation to determine and measure the deliverables that satisfy the defined purpose. After all if you are going into labor and childbirth is imminent a dermatologist might not be what your really need at that time. Social Media is more than just a battle for attention, it is a means to a multitude of ends, so businesses need to be specific in order to harness the potential of the participative behavior that is encompassed by the term.
