How I Got on Ryan Deiss’ Leaderboard AND Won an IPad with a Tiny Email List

November 30, 2011 - Last Modified: April 10, 2013 by Ana Hoffman 2,223

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing sounds easy. After all, how else can you start making money online without a product, a store, a website, right?

Plus, there are so many folks out there who are making it HUGE with affiliate marketing. They are at the top of their game. They make $150K+ per month just by sending out a few emails to their massive lists.

And they can teach us how to do it.

However, let me put some brakes on this runaway train of thought.

You CAN’T and you SHOULDN’T learn affiliate marketing from Super Affiliates.

You know why?

Because you are not them, so you can’t sell like they do.

When an email subscriber gets a promotional email for any given product from you AND a super affiliate, who do you think they are more likely to buy from?

The odds are stacked against you because a super affiliate:

  • Has a reputation they can take to the bank;
  • Has more money to offer way better bonuses than you ever could;
  • Can afford to hire a great copywriter to come up with a convincing email copy;
  • Has a massive number of followers and huge lists.

Still think you can compete with that?

Not a chance.

Super affiliates know that when it comes down to promoting the next hot launch of the month, the odds are definitely in their favor.

Also, consider this: those top dawgs have huge lists, so they can afford low conversions.

After all, if they have a list of only (he-he) 1ooK subscribers and a miserly 1% of them will buy a $50 product with 50% commission, that’s $25,ooo in their pocket with just one email.

And what’s your take for the same promotion if your list is MUCH smaller than that?

With 500 subscribers on your list and the same conversion rate, you’ll make a whooping $125.

And if your list is 200, then your take is $50.

Doesn’t come anywhere close to their $25K, right?

It’s commonly said that you should work towards earning $1 per subscriber per month from your list.

A super affiliate with 100K subscriber base will, no doubt, be very happy to earn that – all with a minimal effort on their part.

Do you make anywhere close to that with your list?

Still think affiliate marketing is something you want to go for? LOL

I hope I didn’t scare you straight because believe me, there’s some hope for the rest of us (i.e. not super affiliates) in this post.

The trick is that we have to work a lot smarter than they do.

My Recent “Competition” with Super Affiliates

Despite everything my common sense told me, I recently chose to promote one of Ryan Deiss‘ affiliate offers.

Just in case you don’t know who Ryan Deiss is, he’s “up there”.

He’s the guru. He’s the top dawg. He’s the guy that makes enough money to afford to maintain a staff of experts that cost him about $200K PER MONTH.

For most of us in online marketing, it’d take years to make that much money with all our online efforts combined.

With a reputation like that, Ryan Deiss’ affiliates are the cream of the crop as well – the super affiliates that we can’t touch.

And yet…

Take a look at this screenshot of an email Ryan sent out announcing the leaderboard of his recent launch of Digital Marketer Lab:

ryan deiss digital marketer lab

Dan Kennedy? Eben Pagan? And… Ana Hoffman?

I almost fell out of my chair when I saw this.

And I was absolutely speechless when, some time after the launch, I received a package containing my brand new IPad! I actually won an IPad… competing with all those super affiliates… all with about 1,400 subscribers…

No, I am not saying all this to blow my own trumpet. Well, maybe just a little bit.

My not-so-secret secret lies in the fact that my email list, although small (it’s just about 2,500 subscribers right now), is very TARGETED and RESPONSIVE.

digital marketing lab promo emails

In the screenshot above you can see the four pre-launch emails I sent out to my list. You see the total number of recipients in the first red box. The second red box shows the open rate (about 60%, which is exceptionally good) and the click-through rate (about 18% on average).

All in all, my email marketing efforts yielded 335 opt-ins, a nice paycheck, an IPad, and bragging rights, which I am very happily bragging about right now.

How Did I Do It?

The good news is I am no super affiliate – far from it, so all the tips I am about to share with you are actionable and can be applied to ANY blog and list size.

Some of them are very common-sense and you already know about them (BUT do you apply them?) and some of them might be completely new to you.

Either way, here’s how you can dominate affiliate marketing with very little resources:

#1. TRUST

This is one of those obvious points, but the one that is the foundation of successful affiliate marketing.

A lot of newbies ask me why they aren’t making much money with affiliate products.

My common response to them is to ask these questions in return “Have you built relationships with your readers? Do they trust you? Do they even know who you are?”

It goes without saying that if their answer is no, then they know exactly why they are not making much money.

I work very hard to build relationships with my readers and my list. I know many of them by name. I know what they do for a living. I know how many kids they have. I know what their struggles are.

In turn, THEY know they can come to me with any questions and I will ALWAYS respond to them.

That’s why they trust me.

#2. AUTHORITY

It does help to be an authority of sorts in the blogosphere, I won’t lie.

Many people know who I am before they ever come to my blog for the first time: they see my guest posts, comments on other blogs, they read posts mentioning me on other blogs. They are already familiar with me before they ever “set foot” on my blog.

But before you throw your hands in the air and say “I can’t compete with that; no one knows me!”, let me tell you this:

Traffic Generation Cafe was started in July of 2010 – it’s barely a year old. NO ONE ever heard of me before then.

FamousBloggers.net isn’t even 2 years old.

And I can go on and on with the list of blogs that we would consider to be an authority in their niches, yet they are baby-blogs of the blogosphere.

Building a popular blog doesn’t involve magic. Just plain old-fashioned hard work and a little outside-the-box thinking will do.

  • My Perfect Recipe to Building a Popular Blog – Step by Step – my take on the subject
  • My Crazy Ways of Blogging and Monetizing A Famous Blog – Hesham’s take

So don’t go crying that no one knows you; do something about it and, who knows, maybe in a year or two you’ll have a FamousBloggers.net in your hands.

#3. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PROGRAMS TO PROMOTE

There are two sides of the coin for this one.

Sure it makes sense to pick affiliate programs that are relevant to your niche, that you’ve used before yourself and know for a fact that these programs are the real deal and will definitely benefit your subscribers.

The most sure way to lose their trust is to do otherwise.

However, there’s a different side to this equation: YOU.

After all, you are in it to make money, right? So you need to learn how to find the best affiliate marketing programs that pay and make sure you promote only the ones that benefit BOTH you and your readers.

#4. BUILD A LIST

There’s a lot of talks in the blogosphere about not needing to build a list any longer.

It’s an “old-fashioned way of doing things”.

I say that it’s the people who don’t know how to build a list, never built a list, and never experienced the power of having one that say that.

The proof? Just see the screenshots above.

I would have never been able to achieve these conversion rates if it hadn’t been for my list. As a matter of fact, that was the primary way I generated all those leads and sales, period.

BUT not just any list will do.

I know of plenty of bloggers who are obsessed with list building and have 10K subscribers. However, they’ll never achieve the same open and click-through rates as I do with my miniscule, compared to theirs, list.

If you wonder where on your blog you should add optin forms to maximize your list building efforts, take a look at which pages bring me the most subscribers.

#5. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIST

This is truly one of my secrets that allowed me to effectively communicate with a targeted number of subscribers who trust me.

Here are some of the ingredients of maintaining a healthy email list:

  1. Don’t sell – much. Obviously, you have to be cautious about sending out too many promos and not enough value. Too much selling is the easiest way to lose trust and subscribers.
  2. Do sell – some. But don’t be afraid of occasionally sending promo emails either. If some people end up unsubscribing because of it, good riddance I say. After all, you are in business to make money and your list needs to know that.
  3. Don’t do “canned”. There’s nothing worse than getting automated emails in our inboxes, wouldn’t you agree? Forget canned. Talk to your readers. For instance, I send only one canned email to my subscribers – my very first one, in which I tell them that this will be the only auto email I send, what to expect from being on my list, and a fair warning that I might occasionally send out promo emails (getting them used to the fact that I am in it to make money AS WELL AS provide pure value.)
  4. Stay in touch at least once a week. Twice is even better. Anything more than that and it’ll get overwhelming. Anything less than that and they’ll forget who you are – really.
  5. Be to the point. No one wants to read mile-long emails; who has the time or the energy, right? Be precise and to the point. Make sure you have one call to action per email (although, to be honest, I break this rule all the time).
  6. Deliverability. Your email autoresponder is in charge of getting your emails out to your subscribers, and you’d better make sure yours does a good job at it. Both Hesham and I highly recommend Aweber as our choice of autoresponder service. Feel free to see why I chose it in my full Aweber review.
  7. Clean your list. This is the reason my list is so small, but so responsive. Every once in a while, I do some “spring cleaning” of my list: get rid of unsubscribes, undeliverables, and those who haven’t opened your emails for a while. Plus, keeping your email list lean saves you money since most autoresponders charge you by the number of subscribers you have, including those who unsubscribed, etc.

For step by step instructions on how to do list cleaning, DEFINITELY read this post:

Bottom Line

Affiliate marketing is never out of reach, whether you are a newbie or a seasoned blogger.

You just need to find ways to promote yourself better that the other guy or gal that works for YOU and YOUR niche.

Don’t be a copycat. Make others want to copy you.

Great post, Ana-- and I have a feeling you'll be at the top of Hesham's list before this is over. I have been blogging and writing online for several years, and had not reached the point where I felt comfortable with affiliate marketing. Your post clicked with me, because as I was reading the first part of it about trust and authority, I was nodding my head. I also realize how important it is to choose the right programs-- with a lengthy background in sales and management, I realize you have to believe in the product to be able to sell it effectively. However, where this post really got my attention was the part about list building. All of it is excellent advice, and just what I have been looking for! Thanks so much for spelling it out for me. Time to pick a few products and get to work!
  2. Steve says:
I knew that your blog hadn't been around for long, but what drives your site is "value" and "personality." That combination is a win-win for most folks. I love your writing style.
  3. Devesh says:
Hey Ana, Fantastic post, as always. You always amaze with your ability to write amazing articles. These all are awesome points !! Congrats on winning that contest. Keep up the rocking work. Have a great weekend.
  4. Mike Sherratt says:
Hey Ana, This is an awesome achievement that you have achieved here. The tips are so true if people are reading and not applying their leaving money on the table. Mike
  5. Radu says:
Hey Ana, I like your approach. Simple. original and to the point. Tip #1 makes a lot of sense. Taking the time to build trust with people by understanding them and having compassion for their needs will bring a lot of benefits. In fact, becoming an authority and a loyal email list are natural consequences of creating healthy relationships. it's a chain reaction:) Congratulations for your results. You deserve them! Thanks for sharing your tips as well, ~Radu
  6. Andrew says:
Ana, Firstly...well done you! That's excellent news. Secondly, I love your 5 main points but the one that jumps out for me is 'CHOOSE THE RIGHT PROGRAMS TO PROMOTE'. I only ever promote products that I use personally. I know many affiliates don't but I feel I can only give a good, honest review if I have used the product / service myself. Another thing to do...is to write a 'not so good' review for a product you didn't like. Not many do that but that also builds trust with your list / readers. Andrew
  7. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Ana, Well said. Trust builds your list and sets up buys, or joins if you run a gifting or MLM team. You can never, ever underestimate this most basic of list-building - and converting - factors. As for your #5 I learned the second section the hard way. I never asked people to join my gifting team. Or I asked once a month because I lacked confidence. Lesson learned. I now ask quite frequently. Here's how I look at it: I develop rabid fans through my list. Each email is value-packed, even my promo's, so every single email ends with a strong call to action to join. I feel confident that the thousands of hours of free, value-packed one of a kind gifting is good, and will help you immensely, so I have every right to ask you to join frequently. If you do not like it, you are not a rabid fan, and do not belong on my list. Excellent insight as always Ana. I learn something new each time you pen a post. RB
    • Ana says:
You mentioned one very important thing, Ryan, that really can make or break the kind of response you get: give value even with your promo emails! That's exactly what I try to do and it does work.
  8. Febrian says:
Wow!! It is a great post.....you make it so much interesting and so much easier to understand. Even an amateur like me feels like I can do it too RIGHT NOW. Keep sharing Ana, I hope you will be the winner in this contest. You deserve it.
    • Ana says:
Thanks, Febrian; glad I could help.
  9. Mavis Nong says:
Hey Ana…looking great in the contest…although I’m not surprised with incredible content like this. I am rooting for you and hope you’re the winner! Keep it up, my dear friend! :) Shared all over the place! Best, Mavis
    • Ana says:
Mavis - you are wonderful; you know how grueling this can be. LOL Can't believe I let Hesham talk me into this...
      • Mavis Nong says:
I know, Ana. The Final Stretch... GO, GO, GO! :) I’m cheering for you! Mavis
  10. Gerald Weber says:
Ana, Very impressive and congrats on winning that contest! I am on your list of course and you definitely do a great job of delivering value without overselling. People can definitely learn a lot (including myself) from your email marketing/list building tips!
    • Jym says:
I second that GMan, Ana's is one of the few lists I stay on despite fairly frequent and ruthless list culls and inbox cleansing. "delivering value without overselling" is just about right!
      • Ana says:
Glad to hear I've avoided the ax so far, Jym. LOL
        • Jym says:
          Safe for now Ana! ;)
    • Mavis Nong says:
Hey Gerald, I can attest to Ana’s amazing email marketing success. We can all learn a lot from her. She is definitely a top notch marketer (as you know!) :) Best, Mavis
      • Ana says:
How did I get from a nobody to a top-notch? Looking back a year ago, Mavis, you and I barely knew what we were doing!
        • Mavis Nong says:
Tell me about it, Ana! It's just amazing what taking massive and consistent action can do for you :)
    • Ana says:
I need to enter contests more often; look at all the praises I am getting - quite an ego boost! (like my ego needed one, right? LOL) Thanks, Gerald!
  11. Lisa Irby says:
Ana, as you probably already know, you are the one who inspired me to get back into list marketing. I tried it many times and was very unsuccessful because I was taking the wrong approach. Having an engaged e-mail list is one of the best tools to have in your arsenal. So many people rely on SEO alone but if your traffic drops then what do you have? Taking the time to master e-mail engagement is one of the best things you can do for your website. I am so impressed with what you've done online in such a short amount of time.
    • Ana says:
No, I really didn't know that, Lisa, although I did know you liked my guest post on the subject. I need to write another one for you soon... Thank you so much; your encouragement means a lot!
    • Ana says:
Forgot one point, Lisa - I too love SEO traffic, but you are so right when you said that we can't rely on SEO alone. If Google were to shut us down tomorrow, our list is still our list.
  12. Francisco Rosales says:
Ana, I love the post, specially because I feel is very aligned with my own thoughts on how to build and maintain an email list. The reason you're right on the money is because you have your eye in the right metric, conversion. Most people focus only on growing the list, as they do when it comes to social media. Truth is if you look at things from a business point of view, you need a smaller list with higher conversion and you can apply the same concept to everything you do online. Thanks for a great post! Francisco
    • Ana says:
Quality prevails when it comes down to email marketing, Francisco; no question about it. I must say, I've been on your list for a while now and love all the value I get out of it. Thanks for coming by!
  13. Andy bailey says:
Great advice Ana, I know first hand how well you do email marketing from your 1st place result in the commentluv premium launch! Just what will you do with all those iPads? Haha
    • Ana says:
LOL, Andy - I must say your promo was quite a boost to my ego!
  14. Gumbumper says:
    Congratulations, Ana! You ROCK!!
    • Ana says:
      Thank you, Tracy!
  15. Erika says:
Congratulations, Ana! That is fantastic. And I really liked your points. I am by no means an expert, but I too have found that being "real" and honest with people is the best way to get regular readers. Great article!
    • Ana says:
Yes, you are going back to "real", Erika - easy affiliate marketing era is over, and good riddance, I might add! Thanks for coming by.
  16. Tram Tran says:
I think I trust you already;)
    • Ana says:
From someone who just found my blog, that's a huge compliment, Tram - thank you.
  17. Bryan Aucremanne says:
    Congratulations and many more...
    • Ana says:
      Thank you, Bryan!
  18. VeehCirra says:
Hi Ana, Wow, congratulations. I just have to say you have enough influence to lead a small country :) This is the best example to show that if you genuinely listen to people they will always listen to you. I am on your list too, am I just love that you don't send canned emails... Can't wait to see to wait you have in store next!
    • Ana says:
I love that comparison, Veeh, and I am very flattered you think so highly of me!
  19. Faissal Alhaithami says:
Great win Ana, Congratulation! and Thanks a lot for the points you mentioned and I guess TRUST is the most important factor of any email list.
    • Ana says:
      Much appreciated, Faissal!
    • Ana says:
I didn't realize you actually sponsored the contest, Faissal - thanks for commenting! I just published a review of your site: http://increase-traffic.tumblr.com/post/14223744216/fans-bridge
      • faissal alhaithami says:
Wow this is awesome :D thanks a lot Ana for this nice review, really love it ;)
  20. Mitchell Allen says:
Ana, I can see you really know your stuff. When I visited on the 1st of the month, you were in 7th place, now, as I write this, you're a chessboard's worth of spaces from 2nd place! On top of that, you also won Andy Bailey's CommentLuv Premium launch contest. Good luck as this winds down! I'm definitely taking notes. Cheers, Mitch
    • Ana says:
Thanks, Mitch. As you know, with my Twitter accounts suspended, this is a tough one - I wasn't able to send a single tweet about the contest. But I am slowly getting there!
  21. Brad says:
Great example of how maintaining a quality list can deliver great results!
    • Ana says:
      Thanks, Brad!
  22. Roger Abramson says:
Ana, I think you've developed an effective method others can use to grow a loyal and responsive blog following. I think you're right about anything being possible. It's easier than it's ever been to choose to do what it takes to become famous, rich, or happy, if you're willing to learn, work, and try. I'm starting to see my little seeds sprouting. Others who frequent your blog seem to have developing gardens of their own. I think you're doing great things for people. I saw small but immediate results by using just a few of your tips. It's very encouraging.
    • Ana says:
The most important thing is to "get over the hump", Roger. The first few months can be grueling when you doubt everything you do. As long as you stick with it and keep tweaking your marketing, your business will grow. Thanks for the comment!
  23. Jamie Hudson says:
Excellent post from Ana... That's actually quite shocking how Ana competed with super affiliates and came in the top 10. Her post says it all, with Ana quality comes first. Her blog is an amazing resource full of amazing content - people get overwhelmed by her content, join her list, get overwhelmed by more content and her authoritativeness and obviously buy what she recommends.
    • Ana says:
LOL, Jaime - you said it!
  24. Catherine Daar says:
Thanks again and again Ana for all your great content and articles. I have been following you from the beginning of your blog and your teachings have helped me grow my business. I will always vote for you. Your true fan from Switzerland. Cat
    • Ana says:
So awesomely kind of you, Cat!
  25. Justin Germino says:
Exceptional article and you also make such great points, often the giants will get the product and already market it before the smaller affiliate even gets access to it further hurting their chances. To be a successful affiliate you also need to really have a niche and stick to products in the target niche of your mailing list or you will get bounce rates and losses. This is one reason why I don't have a great mailing list for affiliate marketing and really can't with my site, I am too unfocused too much variation and it isn't ideal for affiliate marketing. I only run it for newsletters and contests.
    • Ana says:
Much appreciated, Justin. That's precisely why we can't and shouldn't follow their footsteps; rather figure out what works for OUR marketing and OUR audience.
  26. Steve says:
Ana, Some great results here from something important.....doing affiliate marketing the RIGHT way. Building a list is important, and the only way to do it the right way is to earn that t rust and respect and keep it by only promoting products and services that are worth while. With this simple example you have shown just some of that power that can be garnered, even against the 'big boys' when you list build in the right way.
    • Ana says:
That's the only way worth doing it, isn't it, Steve? Otherwise, your list will be like a leaking bucket; never gets quite full.
  27. Harleena Singh says:
Great bit of information Ana! You sure are a role model for most bloggers and congrats for your acheievemnets as well. :) It truly is amazing to see the conversion rates and I think the way you connect and interact with people, must be one of the reasons, besides the awesome information shared with all of us. Wishing you more success in all your endeavors :)
    • Ana says:
Thanks so much, Harleena, and thanks for taking your time to stop by!
  28. Donna says:
Great info as always from you, Ana. After watching your recent videos, I'd like to see you put together a video course that you sell (I'll be happy to sign up as an affiliate of yours, hehe) that puts together all the various aspects that you discuss on your blog. Consider it, ok?
    • Ana says:
I'd LOVE to, Donna. It all comes down to making it a priority and not letting the day-to-day grind to take over me on a daily basis.
    • Danny says:
I think that's a great idea - Ana, can we look forward to a training program from you in 2012? ;)
      • Ana says:
LOL, Danny - who needs to sleep anyway, right?
        • Danny says:
Well if I'm not sleeping, then neither should you! ;)
          • Ana says:
Ahh, you finally revealed your secret, Danny - staying ahead by staying awake!
  29. Kent Cohen says:
Ana, of all the top guru/internet marketers you are one of three i subscribe to. BTW, very impressive Alexa ranking.
    • Ana says:
Thank you, Kent, and THANK YOU!
  30. Renee says:
I'm on the brand side who relies on affiliates to promote my products and I find that the most successful earners I pay out to are warm and engaging with a large list built by being "real" without all the hoopla involved in enticing readers to subscribe to their blogs. I love your stuff, Anna - thanks for all you write!
    • Ana says:
Definitely makes complete sense, Renee - these days it's the best way to stand out.
  31. Elisabeth Christian says:
Congratulations, Ana! Can't wait to see where this takes you!
    • Ana says:
      Thanks so much, Elisabeth!
  32. Carlos says:
First of all, I would like to congratulate you for winning an IPad. I am very confident that you will be the next SUPER AFFILIATE because you have all the qualities of becoming so and more! I believe in you!
    • Ana says:
I am not sure I can make it, Carlos, since I will only promote the products I believe in and no necessarily the ones that have the highest price tag! LOL
      • Danny says:
i think that at the end of the day, though, that's the most sustainable strategy for success.
        • Ana says:
I think you might be right, Danny. That's the one that is not at the mercy of Google, Twitter, FB, and other giants that control the fate of our traffic generation.
  33. Mitz Pantic says:
Hey Ana Congrats on this huge achievement!! The first thing I am going to do is signup for your list and see what you do...:)
    • Ana says:
      Much appreciated, Mitz!
  34. Viktoria says:
Thank you for the tips, Ana! I love your blog!
    • Ana says:
      Thanks so much, Victoria!
  35. Danielle Parsons says:
I am voting for Ana! She has worked hard to develop her niche in traffic generation. Ana offers great value and follows the suggestions she gives to other bloggers. I have the powerful Thesis themes on all my sites now and Comment Luv Premium. It is great to work with powerful tools in my fitness and wellness niche.
    • Mitz Pantic says:
Same here Danielle..I agree! Ana is an amazing role model for all Bloggers! This is an amazing achievement to end up on a list with all those GURU affiliate marketers!
      • Ana says:
Thanks so much, Mitz - you are stroking my ego just the right way! LOL
    • Ana says:
So sweet, Danielle, thank you. On the other hand, you are the perfect example of someone following your dreams; I definitely admire that in you!
    • Danny says:
She's got my vote, too! :)
      • Ana says:
You've shown me amazing support in this, Danny - THANK YOU!
  36. Dan says:
Hi Ana, well done and great advice! I have about 1000 people on my list but none of them would ever buy anything. There are all sorts of people on there and my open rates are around 25%. It goes to show you how important having a targeted list and as you say managing that list well and choosing the right products to promote. Enjoy the iPad!
    • Ana says:
So kind of you to stop by, Dan; thank you. If your traffic/readers/subscribers are not targeted, then they are as good as non-existent. My husband is very fond of the IPad; I haven't touched it yet. LOL
      • Dan says:
Get it off him now quick! Or you'll never get it back.
        • Ana says:
          Too late! LOL
  37. Dneprolab says:
My vote is for Ana. Thanks for great tips in list building and other cool things. Ana is definitely not a copycat, so keep pushing. Looking forward to hearing new cool advices.
    • Ana says:
      Thanks, Alexey; much appreciated!
  38. Sanjeev says:
Ana, Like the way you said it. If the list is not a responsive one than there is no meaning of having it and when most people does not have that big lists, it becomes more important. If its for affiliate marketing I have seen many sites which does not worry about list, readers....they concentrate only on SEO and rankings, I would assume they would be earning enough money (it may not be as much as Super affiliates but it would be more than the small list members). If its only for money that can be a way....
    • Ana says:
I certainly agree, Sanjeev - many sites do just that: get ranked highly for competitive product names and quietly enjoy nice paycheck. I think I need to look into that! LOL
  39. Jane says:
Ana, I am not at all surprised to know what you have achieved. I'm on your list and I just cannot leave your email unopened, no matter at what time of the day it arrives. I can feel the closeness you're building with your subscribers; you deliver a lot of value. So its easy to get sold :)
    • Ana says:
Thank you so much, Jane, and thanks for coming by to drop a comment!
  40. Caleb says:
One thing that stood out was that you don't use "canned" messages and I am supposing you mean preset messages. That would mean that subscribers today will never see the CAFE bombs you dropped yesterday! For example today I got an email from you about the Aweber plugin option to add subscribers via your blog comment form and although I already knew about that, I wonder if your subscribers tomorrow will know which they would've had it been part of series? Now of course there are those spur of the moment messages you just got to broadcast to your list and although I am still mastering the fine art of email marketing, I have found that certain list campaigns greatly benefit from preset messages. But then again your freestyle approach does intrigue me so... ...how about you test out presets on certain segments of your lists while I try your freestyle method on certain segments of mines
    • Ana says:
On the other hand, if I find a far better choice than that Aweber plugin tomorrow, Caleb, that means that I'd have to remember to change my message, and keep doing it on a regular basis. I've been on so many lists that send out outdated preset messages! Also, I think you mentioned one very important aspect. What I do is different. Different is good. That is maybe what makes my list so responsive to begin with. I did try canned in the beginning of my blog. Didn't like it. Don't like getting those kinds of email myself. Also, I have another email list, where all I do is canned emails. It's still my style and all, but the engagement rate with that email list is almost non-existent, whereas with my Traffic Generation Cafe list, I consistently get several responses from my subscribers after each time I email - and no one is cursing me yet. LOL
      • Caleb says:
Hmmm...it sounds like the key herein is whether it's for your blog or not - especially your main one. That is an important point along with the ultimate goal of the particular list. I feel ya Ana :)
        • Ana says:
When it's your main blog, Caleb, you've got to put out the best, right?
  41. James Hussey says:
NICE. I would say, "impressive," but actually it's just you being you (you're a marketer, networker, social maven). The difference between you and someone who just builds links (trying not to raise my hand) is that you build relationships, which have more equity than mere links - so I'm "not impressed." We expect that from you, Ana. :P But congrats! And since you already have an iPad 2 (my guess) - I could use an extra. :)
    • Ana says:
LOL, James - I think the only way I can get that IPad away from my husband is... wait, can't think of any! No, this was my first... Who wants to spend $500+ on it, when you can have a real Macbook warming your lap on the cold winter nights, huh? Now I feel like a cup of hot chocolate. Links? I only wish I had more time for them! I am an introvert and this whole socializing thing doesn't come naturally, so I'd rather build links, quite honestly. Thanks for stopping by! (and don't forget to give this post another shout in the social media when you have a second; might as well milk the most out of our friendship, right? LOL)
  42. Sean says:
Great entry Ana! You're right - it always seems daunting to compete with people who are 'up top' and kickin' ass. But your authority and authenticity in your emails have greatly increased your conversion rates - your subscribers love you! (Obviously, I'm one of 'em) What you're doing is really hard. I, for one, only have a measly 15% conversion and my list is even smaller than yours. Building a list is difficult - building a really good one is even harder.
    • Ana says:
I do agree, Sean - building a list is not easy. I was about to give it up many times in the beginning, to tell you the truth. There were plenty of days I didn't see a single sign-up and wanted to dance for joy when I saw one. LOL But now that I am over the hump and see the true benefits of building a list, I am so thankful I stuck with it. I think I just had an idea for a post...
      • James Hussey says:
Social media shout? Already did, sis: Chris Brogan commented on it at G+ with a thank you. :)
        • Ana says:
Saw it - why would he comment on your profile and not mine? I am much cuter...
  43. Azhar says:
Well done Ana you have created a chain of relation among your readers by personality knowing them. It is the back bone of any business either it is online or offline.
    • Ana says:
      Thanks, Azhar!
  44. Paul says:
Spot on again Anna. You have a wonderful easy to read writing style because you are you. You give inspiration to those of us just starting out that we can be real instead of copywriters. I open everyone of your emails because of the fact that you always share good info and you are real. Purchased comment luv from your link because you represented the product well. Thanks for always being you and keep up the awesome job of telling it like it is.
    • Ana says:
I really truly appreciate it, Paul - your comment, your support, everything. I only got where I am at now because you are willing to read my blog! It took me a while to find my "voice". Once I started writing the way I talk, things started clicking. After some practice, I can write blog posts in my dreams. LOL Not too sure if it's a good thing...
    • Andrew says:
Paul, I have to agree with you..Ana's emails just have to be opened and I also purchased CommenyLuv Premium via her link. Andrew
  45. Brian D. Hawkins says:
Great job Ana and I appreciate you sharing the "how" part of it. I tried to hang in there with you in Andy's contest, even stayed in the top 10 for a while, but I just couldn't keep the momentum going. It was fun though. I've had several lists in the past but my newsletter is a different kind of list than I'm used to. I was struggling with how to introduce offers to those signing up for a weekly newsletter. It sounds like I need to be a little more clear on our newsletter page. Building the trust has always been important to me, even with IM lists. If I haven't used and believed in it, I haven't promoted it. Thanks and Congratulations, you deserved your winnings.
    • Ana says:
Thanks so much, Brian. Yes, I saw you in the top ten for a while - nothing to sneeze at! I think when you do affiliate marketing to your list, it's important to send emails a bit more often. That way you provide value most of the times and offers only every once in a while. If you email your list once a week and once of those 4 times per month you do an affiliate mailing of sorts, then you promote 25% of the times. You see what I mean? I'd tried twice per week.
  46. Brankica says:
I would take a 1.500 members responsive list instead of 30.000 untargeted one any time :) Awesome post, Ana. I know you will give me a good answer to this one so here it goes :) You've probably seen the newsletter "strategy" over at Problogger and how he does it with his photography blog. He will send out I think one or two emails a week, which are not canned, but then you will have some canned ones spread out, for example after 30 days you will get a canned email that is basically an affiliate product pitch and then sometimes you will get a canned email with a list of bets posts on a topic. Something like that, I am sure you will know what I am talking about. So what do you think about that strategy? I like your approach, but how bad (or is it) what they are recommending. I guess I can't make up my mind for the future strategy of my own list, lol
    • Ana says:
I've tried it both ways in the past, Brankica - or should I say, all three ways: canned only, uncanned only, and the mixture. Because the canned emails are space out according to how many days someone is signed up to your post, it means that the chances are great that at least a portion of your list will get their queued email, plus your live email on the same day or very close together. You know what I mean? Anyway, for now, sending out live emails works best for both me and I dare to say for my readers.
      • Jym says:
I still think that the 'too many emails' doesn't have to be a problem... Having some canned stuff (a 'course' or whatever) is obviously a good way to guide new list members through the basics of what you're sharing. Real time newsletters are naturally more about building relationships and sharing what's current. As long as people on your list know what to expect (because you've told them) then it shouldn't be a problem. As far as I'm concerned, if someone is offended by receiving two emails on the same day occasionally - then I'm happy to have them unsubscribe!
        • Ana says:
I definitely agree with your last point, Jym - however we choose to run our list, they are free to leave if they don't like it. Today I sent 2 emails to my list and got one unsubscribe. Not too bad...
    • Andrew says:
Brankica It's all about testing. There is no right / wrong way for YOUR list. I would test all 3 ways and see what works best. I personally used the mixture of canned and uncanned. Andrew
  47. Srinivas Reddy says:
It all comes down building relationships, doesn't it? Easy concept, but hard to practice. And you do an excellent job of this, Ana. In addition to being super-likeable, I love the way you communicate hard-tro-grasp concepts. I'm not an affiliate marketer, but I still enjoy reading your posts. I see a book with your name on it, Ana (assuming you haven't already started one). :)
    • Ana says:
Completely under our control, and yet so often overlooked, isn't it, Srinivas? For now, I can only dream about writing a book... however, nothing that I can't handle with a few sleepless nights. LOL
  48. Lindsey Rainwater says:
Great post Ana! I've been falling behind on keeping in touch with the small list I have, which is bad considering they are all targeted and proven buyers. This article gave me a little kick in the butt to go do something about that. : ) And on a topic in an earlier comment, the "gurus" who lie and pull shenanigans not only irritate people who are trying to learn, but also those who are trying to sell. I have good products, and I sell PLR (which is a dirty word in the minds of many because of the poor output of others.) I always tell the truth about how long something will be on special, or how many copies there are. When trying to build urgency, (which let's face it, you have to have a little to sell to "the masses") I'll sometimes say "I don't know how long this will be available." or "It won't be here forever." Because it won't - I probably won't want that product in a year or two, I'll want to sell something new and never seen before. So when I tell people I'm in internet marketing, and they give me the narrow-eyed look and ask if I'm one of "those" marketers, it makes me want to go strangle a "guru" or two. : ) There is a line between using tactics that work, and lying outright, and it IS NOT a thin line from what I've seen. The more of us who are 100% honest with our visitors and buyers, the better this industry will be. Not to mention the good marketers (like you, Ana) are the ones that end up on top in the long haul. Thanks again for your insight! : )
    • Ana says:
Ahh, a list of BUYERS, Lindsey - do I need to give you a kick in the rear or what? You are so right; internet marketing products are getting bad rep because of some bad apples. However, there are still many great and honest products out there like yours that are truly designed to help.
  49. Sanam says:
I came across to your blog through a comment you left on someone else blog (authority blog). The content really hooked me up and i can't resist myself to come to your blog often. YES you're right we can't compete with super affiliates as they have established systems but people like you're great examples who are appearing as rising stars (congratulations) in the MOST SATURATED NICHES. As far as affiliate marketing is concern, the tips you shared here are really very effective. The way you reach your target audience and how you present your offer plays an important role in getting successful with affiliate marketing. Another thing that I learn from you is how much passionate you're about your offer and how well you know about it. As a buyer, the thing attract me to buy (for example "commentluv") or any product on your recommendation is they way you speak about your offer... Genuine, Friendly and With an Authority. For me the more genuine the recommendation is the greater will be the CR.
    • Ana says:
Music to my ears, Sanam! It's true - even some seemingly impossible niches are not that hard to break into, even for complete newbies like I was not too long ago. Thanks for the comment!
  50. Joshua says:
Wow Ana! This is truly a BADASS post! I am a huge fan of affiliate marketing and list building and it's also one of my main income sources aside from my niche blogs. But there is nothing like being able to make money on demand by sending out an email. Not only that but being able to provide vallue and continue to serve your subscribers with value. Way to stick it to the "Big Guys" and represent for us with a list of under 2k! but definitely growing lol
    • Ana says:
After giving it a lot of thought, I decided that affiliate marketing is right up my alley over any other money-making method out there, Joshua. And now turns out I am actually getting somewhere with it! LOL I had a hard time seeing value in building a list until I truly learned how to communicate with my list, which for me meant to stop sending out automated emails and just talk to people.
  51. Elisabeth says:
Anna, You are amazing in how you can write so honestly and be personable and motivational, too. You are really good about breaking things down to their simplest level.
    • Ana says:
It's because I don't speak techie, Elisabeth! LOL Thanks so much!
  52. Noah says:
Hello Ana, you are a very rare example for a honest 'teacher' nowadays - as I have lost my job 2 years ago and in the age of 52 in Germany have little chance to get another. Because of this I decided to learn Online Business - only knowing how to start my Browser at that time and studying the web 24/7 - until 3 months ago I started my first Blog and are still filling it with Content for newbees like I was - and doing this in german and english to have more audience. On this long way I met a lot of so called 'GURUS' trying to sell me their crappy Stuff with loud advertising and daily 'urgent' mails - yes I was on more than 30 lists and have sorted out all except five - and one of the five is you. So in my opinion, and for me you are one of the last honest 'real professionals' that are to find in that business - and there is adding one more for the Future - ME, to make this wold a little better for some people out there. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and Ideas - Noah
    • Ana says:
Learning from experience is the best way to go, Noah. Now you and I know how NOT to market after watching all the gurus... Whenever I see their offers, my question is always "Who would ever buy this stuff???" Unfortunately, people who don't know any better is the answer. I really appreciate your support and encouragement. It truly inspires me to be more and to do more!
  53. Sye Rodriguez says:
Hi Ana. You have definitely inspired me on many occassions in the short time I've been following you. I am determined to make it in affiliate marketing and seeing others have success is a big help. I put a lot of time into doing it and I still have other jobs I need to do for now. Letting people know it takes work is honest and the truth is beautiful. There are so many people out there that lie to get you to buy something, that waste's your time instead of helping. People like you give help to people and that's why we want to buy something through you when we see it's useful for us. I just want to share something real quick. I was on a live webinar last night that wasn't live. The people who advertised the webinar were selling $2,000 software that's supposed to help you buy the right facebook ads. They claimed it was life, but I knew better. They said it was full and don't get off the call or you won't be able to get back on. I was able to log back into their phony webinar 4 times. Then they pulled the ole "Theirs only 8 copies of this software left;" and "This webinar won't be seen again." I've already got an email today saying there's some copies left, even though they sold out, and the webinar is available for replay, but hurry because it won't be up for long. Thanks Ana for being a real person people can believe in.
    • Ana says:
Don't you hate that, Sye? No wonder so many honest entrepreneurs end up quitting the business because of shenanigans like these. Whoever buys into "buy it now or it'll be gone forever" motto any longer? Sorry, I am getting heated up over this. On another note, thanks so much for making your way here and taking your time to leave a comment, Sye - much appreciated!
  54. Kiesha says:
Congratulations, Ana! You are a serious go-getter!! It's obvious you are blessed with some supernatural powers that just aren't available to everyone :) Add all of that to #1-5 and you've got an explosive mix of success. I'm so happy for you. You are one to be emulated!
    • Ana says:
How do you manage to leave so many comments praising me in so many diverse ways, Kiesha? You are making me blush... Also make me want to print out your comments and put them on sticky notes all around my house. LOL
  55. Allie says:
Ana, You are always an inspiration to me. Honestly. And to see you winning against the Big Dogs makes me want to work even harder to achieve what I want online. My list is way smaller than yours but it grows and right now that is all I can ask for. But I am on yours and I can say I open all the ones I notice. That sounds funny, but sometimes I get so many emails from commenting that I miss yours. You always give quality, concise information. I know when I open your emails they won't be about sales but how you can help me. Thanks Ana! ~Allie
    • Ana says:
Thanks so much, Allie. I remember how excited I was to get even a couple of subscribers per day. I get more than that these days, but every single one of them matters just the same. YOU are the reason I do so well, Allie, and I wanted you to know that I truly appreciate all your support.
  56. Josh says:
That's amazing! Congrats on winning the iPad. Getting emails opened is an art form and one of the hardest things to do. A 60% open rate is insane! congrats. ;-)
    • Ana says:
Indeed, Josh - I truly believe that my opening rates have a lot to do with the trust my readers have for me. PS Wow, that's a long post title in your CL link! LOL
      • Josh says:
Haha, yeah I don't know what she was thinking with that title. Its a great series though, Sorilbran really knows her stuff. :) Hey, I've got another question about aweber open rates I wanted to run by you. I've heard a few different opinions on it and done some experimenting myself as well but am still in the dark a bit. Doesn't aweber track opens by using a small 1px image? If so how are they able to track opens from people that haven't checked "display images from this sender". Do they have a different way or whats up with that? Thanks. -josh
        • Ana says:
It's actually on my to-do list to call Aweber and ask them about it, Josh. I talked to them a while ago, but failed to ask this particular question - duh! I'll let you know what they say.
  57. Kathy says:
You're awesome Ana! ("Awesome Ana!" eh! :-) ) I'm in awe of what you've achieved in your relatively short 1 year timeframe. You are testament to what can be achieved. We have so much to learn from you. As fellow Black Sheep ~ala~ Truth, Freedom and Do Your Own Thing Seekers, you give us great hope and show us the way as a leading light... You have what it takes, and we can all learn heaps from your example you show us. Tenacity, persistence, savvy, smarts, integrity, authenticity, connection, engagement… What struck me the first time I landed on TrafficGenerationCafe was the personal approach and connection, and your care in replying to everyone's comments. You are a wonderful example to follow in connecting, humanizing and relationship building... I love your approach to spring cleaning your list - that is a very important lesson to learn from - rather than hanging on, create a vibrant space for new wonderful people to come into. I wish you much continuing Success Ana!... Cheers Kathy :-)
    • Ana says:
It's absolutely wonderful for me to hear that kind of feedback, Kathy. When I started a year ago with Traffic Generation Cafe, I had no idea what was possible. But now I do. Anything. And yes, it's should be an encouragement to all of us. Thanks for such a warm comment...
  58. Mavis Nong says:
Hey Ana! Wow! What a fantastic post as always! Congratulations on competing with the big guns. Your story just goes to show that you don't need thousands of subscribers on your list to succeed. It's all about having a targeted and responsive list and building relationships and trust. I'm so proud of you, Ana. Much continued success to you :) Mavis
    • Kiesha says:
Hi Mavis! This is encouraging indeed! Ana always has the catchiest headlines for her emails - I can never resist opening them, even when I'm in a hurry. She gives it that special touch that makes them irresistible.
      • Ana says:
Ahh, thanks so much, Mavis and Kiesha - I am definitely blessed to have your support and encouragement!
  59. Neeraj Sachdeva says:
Ana, I have been meaning to thank you for this post. I will be moving into affiliate marketing early next year and this has certainly given me food for thought. My opinion (perhaps wrongly, like many others) was to focus on number of subscribers rather than quality of them. Also, I was inclined to learn from the best. But those affiliates that don't admit of how much time and effort they put into their venture are essentially misleading people into believing that its all quick money! Persistence pays off, and good luck with this venture. and again, I appreciate the pointers.
    • Kiesha says:
Hi Neeraj, I think what sets Ana apart is that she allows her genuinely kind guide how much she helps her subscribers. The next thing that makes all the difference is that Ana actually takes action - most people spend most of their time training and learning and then when it's time to act, they allow things to get in their way. Not Ana, she puts her words into action and fast! If anyone has "Limitless" powers - it's her! :)
    • Ana says:
I think we are too quick to ignore the fact that most successful online marketers have gone through their share of trial and error, Neeraj, before they got to where they are at now. I believe it's much more beneficial to us to learn from their journey vs how they conduct their business now that they are successful.
      • Neeraj Sachdeva says:
But that's my point Ana - hardly any online marketeers want to talk about the hardships they have gone through (which will drive away customers). The first thing they talk about is how they earned 6 figures in a month. Sorry if I am sounding cynical - I do think there are some excellent and honest marketeers around (present company included), but not all are completely open and honest. But then again, people too are gullible. If anyone has tried maintaining a list of followers, they would know that its no easy task. But it certainly pays off. Completely agree with your point regarding journey vs the business itself. :)
        • Ana says:
I definitely see your point and agree with you, Neeraj. Seeing the "end result" is deceiving and discouraging in many ways. I think it's because many "gurus" have completely removed themselves from their followers/readers/customers. "Buy from me and you'll become like me". Doesn't work that way. I think I should write my blog story; I think many bloggers might find it helpful... There's an idea, right - tell the truth! LOL
  60. Venkatesh Iyer says:
Thanks, Ana. I have been losing heart over list building, and had stopped bothering, but you have given me a new perspective. I will get back to it.
    • Ana says:
I REALLY think it's a worthy endeavor, although I do understand how it might seem to be futile and discouraging sometimes.
  61. James says:
I would say that your are nothing less than sheer genius .!
    • Ana says:
I am flattered, James, but I think I have quite a bit of work to do still... LOL
  62. Beat Schindler says:
Ana, your recommendation to not be a copy cat, but to be the one being copied - is a two step process that doesn't work without taking the first step first: copy other people. Whether it's in painting, dance or music, or online, there's no faster way to learn and develop mastery, than to copy from who does successfully whatever it is you're attempting to do. Even from cats we can learn: http://www.beatschindler.com/personal-growth-learn-cats/ So lots of people, such as I, follow you example, before striking out on their own. Thanks for being an example to us all. - Beat
    • Kiesha says:
Hi Beat! You're so right - Ana is the one to be copied! But I think that rather than blindly copying, one should always add his or her own twist - that is the key to taking things to the next level.
      • Beat Schindler says:
Keisha, of course you're right. I spoke of copying (successful people) as the "the fastest way to learn and develop mastery." What you do once you're learned is an altogether different thing. That said, doing things blindly - whether copying or anything else - is hardly ever a good strategy, you're absolutely right.
        • Ana says:
I thinking successful copying lies in simply taking apart any given technique, looking into what's working and what doesn't, and, as Kiesha said, applying your own twist to it, Beat. The things that I did for my list weren't something I learned from anyone; just tried them and they happened to work. You are so right though: after learning comes "doing" and that's where most marketers fail.
    • Kristi Hines says:
I think that maybe you shouldn't focus on copying one person, but instead look at a lot of successful people, write down what they all do well, then take those things and put your own personal modifications and touches on them so you are doing your own thing. It's not copying others, but more like being inspired by them. :) Love the cats post too!
  63. Darryl Smith says:
This is inspirational as well as aspirational. For a 'small' one year old (new?) list, to be as responsive as yours is, shows your touch and building of great value to your list members. I have had people send two mails a day for a week once I am on their lists. The power of delete unsubscribe works as I hate having 'offers' of great value at 'only' $7 or $9 a time which I have to have to be successful really annoys me because I know that it is all hype BS to get me to part with money rather than to help me. Power to you Ana
    • Ana says:
Thanks so much, Darryl. I've been on the list that sent 2 emails per day once; wow, I can't believe that marketer thought it was a great idea!
    • Mavis Nong says:
I couldn't agree you with more, Darryl! I hate receiving tons of emails a day from one marketer, I end up having no time to read them... What's the point? Best, Mavis
  64. Nishadha says:
I think selecting a good affiliate programs is must, if you do some search it's not that hard to find ones that has a good payout for relatively less amount of work.
    • Ana says:
That's definitely the first important step to becoming a successful affiliate marketer, Hishadha.
  65. Liane says:
Wow. That's a great accomplishment Ana! You always amaze me to no end! Keep it up! And oh boy do I envy you with your new iPad :P
    • Ana says:
      Much appreciated, Liane!
  66. Duy says:
Hilarious and true post Ana! I like the way you talk about online marketing gurus lol! You're right, when it comes to affiliate marketing, list building is among the best way to generate a healthy income. And if the list is as responsible as yours than the result is even better. And congrats on your winning prize with the contest. I always support you :D Have a nice day Ana!
    • Ana says:
Thanks so much, Duy - I truly appreciate your support both here and on my blog.
  67. Dr. Bob Clarke says:
Wow, Ana I don't even know where to start. There is so much juice in this post! Having a relatively small list, I am so encouraged. From knowing you and being on your list, I have seen first hand that you practice what you preach here. Even though we've never met, I feel like we know each other in some small way. And that makes it much more likely that I would buy from you. Makes total sense. Thanks for sharing your insights and secrets.
    • Ana says:
The money is not in the list, it's in your RELATIONSHIP with that list - I find it to be very true, Bob. Good thing, relationship building is entirely under our control!
  68. Mary Kathryn Johnson says:
Everyone must start from nothing...the point is START! In order to start getting to know people, and eventually making money, "Stop talking and start typing!" Thanks for the tips, and for helping us believe that even we peons can do this.
    • Ana says:
"Stop talking and start typing" - I need to remember that, Mary Kathryn! Only doers get somewhere...
  69. Doc Sheldon says:
Very interesting and informative, Ana. But then, since I was one of your earliest subscribers, and was thoroughly impressed with the way you marketed yourself and your site, I’m not surprised to see your name on that list. I suspect it won’t be too long before you have a 10,000 name list yourself. I definitely agree that trust is absolutely key. For instance, we trust you not to clog our inboxes with sales hype, to respond promptly to all our comments and emails, to not recommend anything you haven’t already tried yourself, to give us sound advice… the list goes on and on. For my part, I trust that if and when I ever finally get off dead center and decide to get into affiliate marketing, following your example will ensure my success.
    • Ana says:
Thanks for sticking with me, Sheldon - always good to know I've done something right.
    • Mavis Nong says:
Well said, Doc. Ana is truly a great example for all of us to follow. I'm so glad I discovered her blog when I did. I learned a ton from Ana and continue to do so. She is SO amazing! :) Great to see you here by the way. Hope all is well :) Best, Mavis
  70. Sylviane Nuccio says:
Hi Ana, Your success is growing fast and your site looks great, no doubt. Lots of people are wanting to post their articles on your blog as guest and, your win with commentluv shows that you've got the list to prove and back up it all. Congratulation!
    • Kiesha says:
Hi Sylviane! I agree with you - I see only the top for Ana - I figure, I'll just grab on to her coattail and see if I can catch a bit of the momentum :) The best part, is that unlike the Gurus, Ana is one of the sweetest and genuine people I know.
    • Ana says:
      Thanks so much, ladies!
  71. Laura A. Dillivan says:
You're opening my mind and my eyes, Ana! I'm still feeling my way along but you're shining a light that I can follow down to the end of the tunnel!
    • Ana says:
      You are very welcome, Laura!
    • Mavis Nong says:
Great plan, Laura. Keep following Ana and you'll achieve great things in your business. Best, Mavis
  72. Jill says:
Great article Ana - you are an inspiration to all of us working hard to make it online. It's reassuring to see an article like this showing that smaller fish can compete with the big fish and be successful! It's a real boost for me to see that my percentage stats for my mailling list, opens and clicks are similar to yours (although my list is smaller than yours) It gives me hope that I'm on the right track. I'll keep on following you and your advice and watch you soar to the top - leading the way for all of us dreamers to follow!
    • Ana says:
Yes, we, the small fish, are claiming our space online, Jill!
  73. Jennifer says:
Anna, You're awesome! I've learned so much since I started reading your emails and blog posts. Go black sheep go! I've been labeled one for years and on my own it is sometimes difficult to keep going. Working on that little problem. Action speaks louder than words. Good thing I love to write Hang in there and things will always get better in some way Way to go!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Don't let them "get you", Jennifer. We have no choice but to continue!
  74. Gail says:
Congratulations Ana for competing with the "big boys" and succeeding. Your posts and comments are always generous and informative. You're a great blogger and truly engage your readers. We all hope you let the support receive in this contest offset the transition you are going through.
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Much appreciated, Gail. The win here would be a nice boost to both my morale and pocketbook! LOL
  75. Sally Brown says:
Ana, Congratulations on your win and how well your site is doing. I'm proud of you. I love this article because it has value. It is written in easy to understand language with a competent and friendly tone. You really deserve all you get because of your hard work. Sally
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks so much, Sally. I think business owners, online or offline, are generally the most hard-working people around. It always makes a difference to work for "them" vs yourself.
  76. Mitchell Allen says:
Ana, I told you I was going to come over here and start a pillow-fight. {whap} Your definition of Super-Affiliate is different than mine. You don't capitalize the words and you don't pop a dash between them. No respect! I agree, you can't compete against them, yet. But you CAN call yourself a super affiliate. Your emails are almost textbook examples of how to keep your list engaged. Informative, funny, and down-to-earth. Sounds super to me! And here's the best part: your traffic generation strategies can benefit EVERY website. So, I think you are a super affiliate! Pretty soon, people will start copying YOU! Keep your eye on those Super-Affiliates - I heard they copy off each other all the time :) Good luck here and, best wishes for your continued success! Cheers, Mitch
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks so much, Mitch! I am super something; that's for sure... LOL "Don’t be a copycat. Make others want to copy you."
      • Mitchell Allen says:
Ana, you are something else! Congratulations on winning the iPad2! You're burning a hole in the Internet! Al Gore just fell in. LOL Cheers, Mitch
  77. Jonathon Ross says:
9 on the RD leaderboard now 7th spot here so that must be progress progress in the right direction. You've got all my votes +1 etc
    • Ana Hoffman says:
      #1 - here I come! LOL
  78. Steven Davis says:
Ana - What is going to happen when you DO get to 100K subscribers? And it will happen. Party at your house. Great article, great talking to us "little guys". Thanks. Steve
    • Ana Hoffman says:
We are the little guys and girls of the internet, Steve, and I am very comfortable with that. Doesn't mean that we still cannot making any money while at it, right? LOL 100K subscribers? In my dreams... But then again, you know what I said about dreaming big today! Thanks so much for taking your time to comment!
  79. Justin says:
Awesome Job Ana, You have proven that numbers (lots of subscribers for our newsletters) equals more sales. It's quality subscribers and not quantity, and you just reminded me to go through my list and do some spring cleaning.
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks, Justin. Another good reason to keep your list clean is the fact that those who don't open your emails are more likely to mark it as spam, which is terrible for your deliverability rate.
    • Mavis Nong says:
You know, I didn't know anything about spring cleaning your list, Justin. I learned this trick from Ana a while ago and it makes sense. Why should you pay for the dead weight on your list? Best, Mavis
  80. Annie Desantis says:
Ana, I subscribe to a lot of the "biggies" in internet marketing and have done for years, but I will always open emails from you in preference to Ryan Deiss - Why? His are mostly videos that stop and start as they buffer - don't have this problem with any other videos! There is no text and I hate wasting my time waiting for a vid - I would rather scan quickly to get what I want or see if the information is something I want to explore further. You distill and condense much of what the so-called Gurus say in a way that makes sense, and is useful to me. Your "voice" is real, not a salesy pitch that has been tested and tweaked to death. You may not have been around for long, but you are a shining light in the murk of internet marketing, keep up the great work, you will go far I am sure. Your husband's recent issue with employment simply is the Universe confirming your path is a different one. Thank you for all the great posts you give us, Annie Desantis :) PS I've always been a rainbow sheep! Most of my career has been escaping back into self employment after bouts of working for corporations that simply were not a good fit for my ethics, my creativity or my beliefs that work should be a joy.
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Do you hear that, Ryan Deiss! Thanks so much, Annie - being affirmed in this way really means a lot. Rainbow colored sheep... I like that... Either way, we stick out like a sore thumb, don't we? LOL
  81. Darren says:
Impressive stuff, Ana. You keep this up and we'll be all 'I remember her when' soon :) Darren
    • Ana Hoffman says:
He-he, Darren - it's a nice thought, let me savor it for a second.... Yep, all done and back to my old down-to-earth self. LOL
  82. Rachael Slorach says:
Hi Ana, It is no wonder that you are doing so well in the comp and with your reputation. You blog with integrity, honesty and fun. You are not afraid to tell it like it is and always share part of your personality. Good luck
    • Ana Hoffman says:
It's good thing I've got a personality, Rachael, LOL. Thanks for the comment!
  83. Jane Buswell says:
I am not surprised to see you up there, you communicate with your followers as if they were your friends. It's warm and engaging and personal - and it works!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Much appreciated, Jane - I wouldn't have it any other way!
  84. Larry says:
Wow, that is awesome Ana. It gives a little bit of hope to those of us struggling up from the muck here on the bottom. I do notice that you are pretty consistent in how you send out your emails for sure. You are also always on top of posting to your site, and posting helpful content. Consistent in answering comments both here and on your blog as well. So even perhaps a lesson that I need to learn is to be more consistent! Congrats on your Ipad!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Consistency is definitely a huge factor, Larry. If you were to come to my blog a couple of times in a row and see no new content, you might think twice about coming by again, right? My husband loves IPad! I haven't touched it yet... Love my laptop too much.
  85. Kristi Hines says:
Considering that you're one of my top affiliates, I'm not too surprised to see you doing so well with others. You do a great job balancing trust and sales which keeps your list happy, healthy, and ready to buy! :)
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks so much, Kristi! It's easy when the product is great, plus has your name on it... You are the perfect example of building relationships and trust; people buy your book just because it has your name on it.
  86. Lilach Bullock says:
Ana fantastic article as always. I love your work and I can see how you managed to get your name next to some amazing affiliate marketers:) Keep up the great work, you're an inspiration to many:)
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks so much, Lilach. Truth be told, I am surprised myself, but I'll take it! LOL
  87. Katrina Moody says:
Gotta say, Ana - you rock at bringing it down to the most basic terms, especially for those of us still really getting started. ;-) For the longest time, I was the no-optin girl ... but then I figured out that my blog was going to stay just that, 'my blog' - unless I made the effort to make those connections. Good luck in the contest and great post!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
We all had to start somewhere, right, Katrina? And as you saw from the post, both Hesham and I are still newcomers to the blogosphere... I am very selective as to which lists I opt in to, but there are still marketers out there that put their subscribers' interests over any "let's make a quick buck" mentality.
  88. Anne says:
I read this with great interest, Ana. I also clicked back to that list article on your own blog. You see, I'm one of those people who do not have a list. I guess that makes me a lazy blogger? Congrats on winning an iPad and for getting on that list. Well done!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
I think your niche allows you for great opportunities to build a list and monetize it as well, Anne. There are many products you can promote that will go very well with your free content. I would strongly suggest you think about it. Thanks for coming by!
  89. Sam Clarke says:
Awesome post! I just started my blog last August and am seeing good results. I have to say though one thing I missed on on the first 3 months was not having an opt in form. I missed a lot of potential subscribers. My advice is if you are starting a blog make an opt in form and a way to generate a list one of your #1 priorities!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
I agree, Sam. Many bloggers think that they need to have tons of traffic before starting their list, but the truth is, with great content, you can and should start building your list from day one. All the best with your blog!
  90. Sarah Arrow says:
Congrats Ana, that's a great achievement. I love how you say the big secret is building a responsive list :) I also send out warnings/guidelines that I will share great things with them and occasional I may earn something from that. Like you I back it up with "I never promote what I don't use" and I keep my list clean. Aweber is a fab tool and I also recommend it heartily. Thanks for sharing so much great advice here
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks for taking your time to come over, Sarah! And yes, the big secret is not secret at all! Just people. That's where it all begins and ends.
  91. Scott says:
Bah bah Black Sheep! I love being the different one....bringem' on!!!!
    • Scott says:
Super GREAT job Ana! Thanks for being so real to the rest of us! Have an awesome day!
      • Ana Hoffman says:
LOL, Scott - right there with you!!!
  92. Rachael Macgregor says:
Great job Ana! It's fantastic to see others out there that value the relationship they have with their list over just the numbers. Without a relationship you are dead in the water when it comes to email marketing. Well done and thanks for sharing how you did it :) Rachael Macgregor
    • Ana Hoffman says:
No question about it, Rachael. Just look at this post - it's bustling with comments and most of them via the email I shared this morning with you and my list. Relationships do matter. Thanks so much for stopping by!
    • Mavis Nong says:
I couldn't agree with you more, Rachael. It's absolutely important to build a good relationship with your list, as people buy from those they like and trust. I also believe in having a small and a responsive list, rather than thousands upon thousands of people who are not even opening my emails. Great to see you here :) Best, Mavis
  93. Peggy Baron says:
Hi Ana, As I read your post I kept nodding my head up and down, especially with #1 about trust. Yes! Trust makes a huge difference. Given the choice, people will buy from the marketer they trust rather than gurus with big lists. Trust can even trumph bigger better bonuses. How do you get trust? Be transparent, be a real person in your emails, admit you make mistakes too, be available, make sure the conversations go both ways...
    • Ana Hoffman says:
I'd like to believe so, Peggy, and I think we are on the right track here. Thanks for the comment!
    • Neeraj Sachdeva says:
I don't want to steal Ana's limelight (as if I could), but I think trust is a delicate thing - especially among marketeers. If marketeers have a giving attitude, they are more likely to be successful. I say give out 80% info, and charge for 20%. I think personalizing business blogs also helps, surprisingly (I have been meaning to do a study on this actually). This is where customers realize that marketeer is human after all, which can often be missed in the virtual world!
      • Ana Hoffman says:
No one wants to deal with a computer screen, Neeraj, but put a face to it, and all of a sudden, you are in business!
  94. Alexis says:
Anna, Congratulations on figuring out a way to succeed against the big guns! As the recipient of far too many "buy my stuff" emails I think you are right on the money with your action plan. Best of luck going forward! Alexis
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thank you, Alexis. I am very excited about this one. There's hope for us all!
  95. Danny says:
Way to go, Ana - nice work, and thanks for sharing it with everyone here. I'm rooting for you to win the contest - you deserve it! :D
    • Ana Hoffman says:
      Much appreciated, Danny.
  96. Damita says:
SO PROUD OF YOU ANA! Break that glass ceiling! Keep following your dreams! You're almost there!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks, my dear - I'm climbing up and up and up.
  97. Josh Campbell says:
Oops, I forgot something in my last comment. I was wondering: does Aweber provide email opt in forms, or just an autoresponder service? Thanks!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
They have a huge selection of forms to choose from, Josh - they are pretty much a one-stop email solution service.
  98. Josh Campbell says:
An encouraging post, Ana; it's good to know that it is possible to fight the IM Goliaths and sometimes win. And you're right, we TGC email subscribers do have a great deal of trust in you :)
    • Ana Hoffman says:
      Thanks, Josh! LOL
  99. Sam Adodra says:
Ana, I have to admit that you're a breath of fresh air. So many IM's keep material from 3,4,5 years back and when someone new joins that list, they get out dated material. You're a rare breed that actually bothers to send out regular live emails and to me that makes a huge difference (take note budding bloggers!). Wish you best of luck dear. Sam
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks so much, Sam! I really do strongly dislike getting those kinds of emails; why would I send them to my list, right? Thanks for the comment!
  100. Sheyi says:
Ana, you own this blog right? This is my first time here i just finished reading your black sheep post. How's your husby doing now? Sheyi Shobayo The Authority Site Guy
    • Ana Hoffman says:
The blog that you came from (Traffic Generation Cafe) is the one I own, Sheyi. He's doing... His confidence is a bit shuttered, but he's pulling himself together - thanks for asking!
      • Sheyi says:
Aight Ana. Wish you success and keep on dropping those lovely articles. Say me hi to him as well. Now guess you have him with you always but don't hesitate to work online when we need you. lol Sheyi The Authority Site Guy
  101. Dan Reed says:
Ana, well written advice anyone can take to the bank. As time goes on and we institute these within our own business plan, the results like yours have been are sure to come for us all, newbies and pros alike. Thanks and my best to you!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks for coming by, Dan. Even though I have a very active blog, I still consider myself a newbie in the industry, and it's nice to know that we can still be successful.
  102. Helenee says:
Trust is an outcome. It is built on solid research, consistent publishing and branding, marketing insight and more. It's somehow similar to that article-writing tip, 'Deliver on that promise made in your (headline).' Readers, followers and customers, we all need to feel attended to by a marketer - whether we are in a physical or in a virtual store.
    • Ana Hoffman says:
"Deliver on the promise..." that sums up the whole idea of trust very well, Helenee.
  103. Susan says:
Admittedly, the first thing that came to mind when I saw you on that list was that it was nice to see a woman do so well against the boys. But congrats! those first few guys are definitely the leaders in this industry. Be proud and keep bragging.
    • Ana Hoffman says:
I know I felt the same way, Susan. I feel like women still have a lot to prove in this industry.
  104. Chadrack says:
This is great work indeed. And your action plan is just superb. You've just given me reason to do more about my list. Congratulations for the prize!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks, Chadrack. I was surprised myself, but the numbers are what they are. Now I have my formula for affiliate contests. LOL
  105. Cristina Ansbjerg says:
Congrats Ana for such an amazing achievement! I love it when you say that "normal affiliates" cannot do things the same way superaffiliates do. And it also happens in other areas. Some people try to copy what "gurus" do when the thruth is they don't have the same resources. Great post, Ana. And once again, congrats!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks for the thumbs up, Cristina! I am not even sure if building a business the way super affiliates have still works nowadays. Most of them have been online for a while; back in the day, when list building was a novelty and anyone would sign up for anything. I might be wrong, but I don't think such approach would work these days. We can't get by with sheer numbers.
  106. Ben Lang says:
That's impressive, I wish I could do so well with affiliate marketing. Great job!
    • Josh Campbell says:
I know the feeling, Ben. I've always found this part of blogging a bit mystifying myself. It doesn't help that the niche I occupy doesn't have many products to promote, but I've never been able to convert very well on the ones I do. I think I might be messing up on #1 and #4; I don't keep in touch with my email list very often, and when I do it's usually because I want to sell something.
      • Ana Hoffman says:
I think it's all about consistency, Josh. We, bloggers, are very good at being "busy" with our blogs and ignoring the monetization side of business. Yet, of course, that's why most of us are online to begin with. If your niche doesn't make much money, time to tweak the niche?
    • Ana Hoffman says:
      Thanks so much, Ben!
  107. Stella says:
Congrats, Ana. This is a proof that "the money is in the list" is not about the list size BUT a targeted and responsive list built with TLC (tender, loving care). Thanks for sharing your success story.
    • Ana Hoffman says:
In our day and age of overwhelming product launches, affiliate emails, etc. this is the only way to stand out, Stella. Thanks for the comment!
  108. Harleena Singh says:
Congrats Ana! You do inspire and motivate so many of us and more-so your posts do teach us something new each time. It sure is great to learn so many new things in this post, and I love the awesome tips you mentioned here as well. Wishing you the very best in all your future endeavors as well :)
    • Susan says:
I agree with Harleena - one of the reasons I open your emails and get notifications of new posts is because I know that I always learn something new from you, whether it is something you teach in your writing or maybe a technique I observe you using in your methods. That's probably the best way to build trust and authority.......
      • Ana Hoffman says:
Thank you, Susan - it sure feels great to know that I am doing something right!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Sometimes the best tips are the simplest ones, Harleena. Thanks so much for the comment and shares!
  109. Jym says:
Awesome work Ana... Kinda feels like you're 'flying the flag' for the 'non-super' masses... Well done! I'm no master at this but as I read the way that a number of different people are successfully converting lists into sales one thing seems to be consistent. They all do it differently. Many points seem universal (don't sell too much, do sell some etc...) but others - particularly frequency - seem to be more of a 'horses for courses' story. Guess it all comes down to knowing your list, who they are, what they want, and how to give it to them in a way they understand. Love the post!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
That's very true, Jym - one size doesn't fit all. The bottom line for me though is setting expectations for my list. I send out an email as soon as someone subscribes, letting them know the frequency and the fact that I might occasionally market something. Not that it plays that big of a role in the end, but it does help to let my subscribers know what to expect from me.
    • Neeraj Sachdeva says:
Guess my reply applies to both of you - how do you know exactly what your subscribers want? When you ask a question, do they email back? I must admit, I have often been guilty of not replying to simple questions that come up in my mail. Do you guess what people want, or do you look out for trends and appreciation for your content?
      • Ana Hoffman says:
I think it comes down to trial an error, Neeraj. I talk to my list. Every new subscriber of mine gets a personal email from me letting them know I am here for them. That opens the line of communication and many subscribers do respond back. If you choose not to respond to those emails, then you are effectively cutting off any chance for establishing trust. Also, at the end of it all it's YOUR list they are on. If they don't like the way you run things, they'll unsubscribe and that's entirely fine. You shouldn't always bend to adjust to your list; they should adjust to you as well.
        • Jym says:
Whilst agreeing with Ana, I'd add that your whole blog/business concept has a higher chance of success if it's based on some kind of market research in the first place... Even if that means having observed what other blogs are successful, what people are talking about on Twitter, it's all insight into what people want. Building on that, comments on your blog is an invaluable source of questions and windows into what your readers are interested in talking or learning about. Could even take things a step further by directly asking questions of your readers "What do you most want to learn about relating to [your niche]?" in your blog posts and across social media, polls etc...
  110. John Paul says:
Ana.. Congrats on the win over some of the big boys. More proof that a well built and maintained list WILL make you money.
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks, John Paul... Truly goes to show that nothing is impossible in IM; it all comes down to HOW we use the strategies everyone else is using.
  111. Vikas Arora says:
TRUST, AUTHORITY these are really big thing and does matter a lot when to look for affiliate marketing. You well said that don’t be copycat lead the world by new ideas :) Thanks
    • Ana Hoffman says:
After much experience with affiliate marketing, I definitely think trust has a huge value, Vikas. That and getting your reviews ranked on Google. LOL
  112. Erica says:
Hey Ana! Congratulations for winning! And I'm proud that a woman was on the top ten because of you! Keep it up! You're an inspiration to women in the net!
    • Ana Hoffman says:
Thanks, Erica! I must admit it does feel nice to break into the men-dominated world...
