Role of Motivation in Blogging

October 30, 2010 - Last Modified: October 30, 2010 by Jeevan Jacob John

Blogging and Motivation
How to Motivate Yourself to blog? Do you know how to ? Scientists have used different theories to explain Motivation. In this post, we would be discussing about the theories of motivation and on applying them to your blogging career.

What Is Motivation ?

Motivation allows us to explain why we live. Motivation is the reason why we do things. Behind each and every actions of ours is the mysertious thing called “Motivation”. Motivation Motivates You.

Blogging and Motivation

Blogging and Motivation? Huh? What? Motivation is the reason why you are reading this. Motivations is the reason why you are blogging. Motivation explains everything.

Learn to Motivate Yourself

For this particular situtation, we would be using Incentive theory. Incentive theory basically means the same as its name ; You get rewards. We will be o nly using part of this theory which can also be called as Extrinsic Motivation.

What is Extrinsic Motivation ?

Extrinsic Motivation states that you do something for a reward (Good or bad – But in this case we will go for good). For example : You blog becuase you want to make money.

Think About Your Goals

Think about why you started blogging. Thinking about the money you could be making. When you are in the depression stage of blogging, think about your goals. They will help you to continue. (Depression stage refers to a stage in which you don’t achieve the expected results). You goals will help you to sat on task. Money-Making can be considered as a good incentive especially when you are in need of money (Everyone in the world needs money, I know). If your goal is to make some cash, then you can use it as a good incentive, But try not to focus on money ; Too much focus can results in poor content productivity.

Think About other Rewards in Blogging

Fame. Yes, fame is the thing people want. You can get really famous through your work in the blogging world, but you need to have some “excellent” content. You should have a good CP (Content Productivity)

Bad Motivation

Motivate Yourself to blog. I agree on that but be careful. Its ok to use blogging as your motivating factor. But be careful since Money can make you go blind ; You will lose  your focus. You will start to write less quality articles. To create the best content. you need to focus on the visitors/people. You need to care about them. When you do you will be able to achieve great deeds.

Anti-Motivation

I don’t think there is a word called “Anti-Motivation” but for now this is our term for danger. When you don’t get expected results from blogging, you may feel depressed ; You may “demotivate” yourself from blogging. You may abandon your blog. Abandoning is a common thing in the world of blogging. Abadoning in blogosphere usually occurs at the beginning of your blogging career ; When you are a newbie. The first periods of blogging are the worst and hardest. It is the time when you don’t know anything ; It is the time when you don’t have any experience with blogging. When you don’t get enough results in this stage, You will feel really bad. I know this because I have experience it. At one time, I even felt like abandoning my blog. But I didn’t. I decided to stay. I knew that I could conquer new heights if I had determination and patience. Many of the bloggers today has these two qualities : Determination and Patience. These two qualities motivated me to blog. If you are a newbie, I advise you to form goals, use it for your good.

What does this Mean ?

This mean so much. Motivation allows you to blog. Motivation is a sense creates your passion to blog. Motivation is the basic structure of your blogging career. Agree it or not. Motivation is. You as a blogger can be motivated knowingly or unknowingly. Sometimes other motivate us. Many bloggers have inspired me to write high quality articles. They have motivated me to continue. After all, We are living because of our motivation to live. Motivates make us do different things. Anyway, Its time to wrap up this post. My purpose was to introduce the idea of Motivation to you. And I think I have done a good job. Do you think so? Let me know of Your opinion.

Great post on motivation. However when starting on a blog, the motivation should be for great content initially. What do you do to motivate yourself even when you're not seeing the necessary results?
  2. Robert Lu says:
Motivation plays a great deal in ones life - We all need motivation to be successful in our lives
  3. karan says:
Looks like you gave a lot of thought before writing this one... Impressive Jeevan!
  4. Biodun says:
motivation to blog will really comes from you, although there are many ways to keep yourself going.
  5. TJ McDowell says:
This is one of the reasons that having multiple blogging goals makes blogging a lot easier. If you get into the "depression stage" because you're not famous and you're not making a lot of money at the beginning, at least your SEO efforts may start paying off sooner.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I agree. Its better to have 1+ motivators when you are blogging. Thanks for the comment @TJ.
  6. ZK says:
I really like your name ... Jeevan Jacob John ... any special reason for such kind of name ... Simply add Jahagir as well. Jeevan Jacob John Jahagir ...
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks ! I don't know. But Jeevan in my native language means life. One of my uncle's name is Jacob. So I guess, Jacob comes from that. My dad's name is Johnson. He decided to take off the son from Johnson, so we get John. All together Jeevan Jacob John ! Thanks for the comment ZK !
  7. Josh Ray says:
This is a great post. You're pretty smart for a 17 year old. Staying motivated can be hard sometimes when you just don't want to write anymore. I've been writing as a freelance blogger for a few years now and there are times when I have to force myself to stay on the computer until my work is done.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks and Thanks one more time ! I agree. I have felt like that, when I didn't really know what to write. But now, I tend to think Blogging as my satisfaction. Thanks for the comment Josh, Jeevan Jacob John
  8. Chadrack says:
Truly love the way you put this. Want to say that the wrong motivation can really be dangerous. When you are more focused on the money you will make you'll lose every sense of decorum and this could be dangerous. This reminds me of what I saw a few days ago when I was to approve a comment in my spam folder. When I followed the link I saw a well designed blog with good content. But there was a comment which showed that the young man has been using a comment spam bot for posting comments. In fact the comment on my blog was posted by the bot! What really angered me was the reply to that comment by the blogger that since his system is making him money he doesn't care others will say! It's unfortunate, but I think he is being motivated in the wrong direction. Posting a spam comment on my blog that he has signed up to my newsletter and tweeted my post and I should do the same for him only to check on google and discover that he has posted this same comment over 3,000 times all over the net was not only insulting but immoral! We don't need such people in this business. Let's be motivated in the right direction.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks Chadrack ! I agree. Money as a motivator can drive you crazy. You may focus on making money rather than creating good content. This can lead to may other problems like duplicated posts = posting the same thing again and again. That is really crazy ! But what can we do ? We don't have a service where we can report all these. May be you can report it to WordPress authorities, if we is using WP. I agree. He is motivated in the wrong direction. Anyway, he will face the consequences one day. Yes, lets be motivated by the satisfaction of writing a good post.
  9. Alex says:
I think motivation is an important factor not only in blogging but also in many other fields of our life. Without being motivated one cannot really think of achieving success in any sphere of life. In blogging too, if we are not motivated enough and do not post quality content regularly success cannot be achieved
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Alex, Yes, I do agree with you. In fact I mentioned it I think : Motivation is the reason why we take actions ; why we do things. Without motivation, there wouldn't be anything : No technologies, inventions, discoveries not even population growth. Yes, I do agree. Thanks for the comment Jeevan Jacob John
  10. bryan says:
Hi Jeevan, Great post on motivate here. I think motivation is one of the key things in building a successful blog. I agree with you that there is an element of extrinsic motivation to blog. It can be for money or to see a big blogging audience on your site. But I also think that intrinsic motivation is the one that drives you the most. Things like sharing your passion, sharing your expertise, wanting to break out of the rat race that everyone else is doing, an inner desire to express your knowledge and experience through blogging, satisfaction from helping others. Thx for sharing this :)
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hello Bryan, Thanks ! I agree, Intrinsic motivation can be very powerful, but there is another element to it : You don't need intrinsic to motivate yourself ; Intrinsic is not needed. If its present, Intrinsic motivator can be very helpful. Yes, those are some of the most powerful blogging intrinsic motivators. Welcome and Thanks for the comment, Bryan Jeevan Jacob John
  11. Murlu says:
I always give myself a hard approach to motivation - I tell myself "shuttup and keep working" because what often happens is that I become distracted by others, their success and become discouraged - I just have to focus on my own thing and get things done. No better motivation than kicking yourself in your own rear :)
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
;)) I agree with you. Sometimes, I feel discouraged too. At that time, I say to myself "If I work hard, I can be at a better place than them". This helps me to be in a competitive position (serves as a motivator). Anyway, Thanks for the comment Murlu, Jeevan Jacob John
  12. Tinh says:
It means a lot of thing man and it also relates to money too :-) Thanks for your great points but I can not agree more that no motivation, you can not do anything in blogging or any other business too :-)
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks for agreeing with me ! Yes, Motivation is an important element in blogging. Thanks for the comment, Tinh Jeevan Jacob John Have a great day !
  13. Mani Viswanathan says:
Sometimes negative feedback encourages one to put in more effort & achieve more success in Blogging.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
It may. But it is not a smart motivator. Anyway, Thanks for the comment, Mani Jeevan Jacob John
  14. Dennis Edell says:
I gotta be honest. You mentioned two motivators; money and fame. Whilst both are strong motivators, neither are smart motivators.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I didn't mean to say that one need to choose a motivator from those two. All I wanted to say is that most Bloggers use them. I would want to choose some other thing as my motivator. Thanks for the comment, Dennis
  15. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Jeevan, I’m an honest men, I only blogging for SEO, create pages with the long tail who lead people to my website. And of course, that give my money in the long race.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Good ! I am not a good expert with SEO, so I don't have much to say. Thanks for the comment Lennart, Jeevan Jacob John
  16. Barbara Ling says:
Throughout my 13+ years online, I've had various types of motivation. At this stage (I'm in my 40s), it's mainly my family and the joy I receive from teaching others that gets me going. Congrats on starting so early in blogging!
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
13+ years online ! How many years have you been blogging ? Definitely, there was no such thing as blogging. You have a great Motivator. Thanks ! Thanks for the comment ! Jeevan Jacob John
  17. Biodun says:
Yes a blogger should be determined and full of patience, you can't be famous overnight. This one of the reasons why most of the blogs don’t survive many bloggers just get bored, run out of motivation and will find something better to do.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Definitely, you can't be famous overnight. Motivation is unnecessarily important during the first part of one's blogging career. Many people doesn't really have the motivation to continue, so they quit blogging. However there are lots of bloggers out there, who want to continue - they are motivated to blog due to some reason. Thanks for the comment, Jeevan Jacob John
  18. Rob says:
To me its a great way just to express whatever is on your mind. It also is an opportunity to show your expertise in a particular field by helping others. Bad blogging is easy to spot so be sure to love what your talking about, that helps the success as well.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hello Rob, Same with me. Blogging is a great way to express on own ideas to the world. Agree with you. Thanks for the comment, Rob Jeevan Jacob John
  19. Bruce says:
Excellent advice young man. You do a great job. Keep it up.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks ! Thanks for the comment, Bruce. Have a great day !
  20. Hung says:
Great article Jeevan, People said :take action I am taking action to post...my new blog post.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Hung, Good decision ! You are motivating yourself ! Thanks for the comment, Hung
  21. Kimi says:
Hey Jeevan, Glad to read your post again :) At the first of blogging, my motivation was, i love to do what i am blogging about, sharing my knowlegde about WordPress with other newbies. However since my blog also grows, i start to be able to earn money with it, now my motivation is earning money with my blog LOL. So i believe most of bloggers motivation is "earn money online", even if they don't admit it. If a blogger says, they don't want to earn money from their blogs, it is simply because they haven't earned anything, once they earn, they will get addicted, just like me LOL. Thanks for the great point you have made, Jeevan!.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Glad to hear that ! Earning money is a good motivator but be careful of it (Its not the best !). I agree, Most bloggers want to make money through their website. For me, its about having fun writing, thinking, promoting and networking. I would like to make some money since I want to switch to WordPress. (I have earned some money by the way) Anyway, Thanks for the wonderful feedback, Jeevan Jacob John
  22. Steve says:
Motivation is very important to keep something like a blog going. Self motivation is really what is needed too. Extrinsic motivation will only get you so far (maybe the tasks you don't like) but you still need some definite internal motivation to be able to blog and blog well for a long period of time.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
I agree with you. Extrinsic Motivation is good to some measure ; But beyond a limit even sugar can taste like salt. Bloggers definitely need a internal motivation (other than an extrinsic one). For me, I consider blogging as my hobby. The music and harmony (ie happiness) of blogging makes me feel like I am different or unique from my friends (in the sense of internet usage). Anyway, Thanks for your wonderful feedback, Steve ! Jeevan Jacob John
  23. Ingrid Abboud says:
Hiya Jeevan, Great post you've got there! Kinda motivated me even more now lol :). Motivation is what keeps the fire burning within us and what enables us to strive for even more than we do and are! In the blogging context, motivation is why I write, why I read anything and everything that can empower me to be even better. No matter the industry that you're in, without that extra push, that extra umph, that extra bit of heart, that extra willingness to work harder, be better, greater, different, first, original... - you've got nothing. There are so many quotes I love that best describe the power of motivation and if you don't mind, I decided to share two of them which I think are spot on! "Desire is the key to motivation, but it's determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek." by Mario Andretti "Without inspiration the best powers of the mind remain dormant. There is a fuel in us which needs to be ignited with sparks." by Johann Gottfried Von Herder Thanks for reminding us why we do what we do and why we should continue. Cheers
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hi Ingrid, Thanks. Motivation is the reason why I am replying to your comment right now ; it is the reason why I wrote this guest post. Without Motivation, there wouldn't be an active world. I think most bloggers blog due to extrinsic motivation - motivation due to money. Most bloggers blog for money. For me, its just fun. Blogging is a hobby. Thanks for the wonderful quotes ; I should have added some to my post. Oh, well. Anyway, Thanks for your wonderful feedback ! Welcome and Thanks ! Jeevan Jacob John
  24. jhon says:
Motivation is an inner power that makes you to do some good or bad action. Normally inner motivation is word that is always use in positive sense. When a person presents very good ideas in his field and his each and every idea is productive in his profession, he is on the way of inner positive motivation. I want to frankly define it, inner motivation is complete guide line that you provide yourself.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks for the comment, Jhon. I agree. Anyway, Thanks for the explanation.
  25. Jeff says:
Motivation is the key, without that you have nothing!

Dude! You doing a great job!
  28. Isabel Rodrigues - Pro Blogger Journey says:
Motivation is the key when it comes to Blogging. I quiet agree with you. For Blogging you need to have lots of patience to start seeing result after a certain period of time. Many bloggers find it difficult to cross the initial hurdle and finally perish before reaching the end of the tunnel. This is why its very important that a blogger keeps his motivation level high so that he gets his due for hardwork.
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks for agreeing with me ; Its a great pleasure to know that I am right at what I am doing. I agree with you ; I didn't have "patience" when I started blogging. I wanted the results instantly. But soon, I learned that patience is an important element in blogging. The first and foremost part of blogging is the hardest part ; I agree. Motivation is really important during this period. Thanks for the comment, Isabel Jeevan Jacob John Hope we can connect in the future !
      • Isabel Rodrigues - Pro Blogger Journey says:
Hello, As a blogger I too was a bit impatient in my early days. But yes the Success Hunger teaches you everything :D
        • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks for the reply Isabel. I agree. For me, the sight of my competitors achieving blogging success provoked a competitive nature inside me that told me to continue ; That told me that I will achieve success if I try hard. Thanks, Jeevan Jacob John
  29. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Jeevan, This is great advice, thanks for sharing with us :) To motivate myself I look for the why in the what. Whatever it is that I want, be to help people with my blog, more readers, or money, I practice experiencing the feeling of it already happening. Kind of like looking into the future with my imagination. When I tap into these feelings I have no problem staying motivated ;) Have a great day! Ryan
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Welcome ! That's an excellent way to motivate yourself (unless you are thinking about the negatives of the future). What I do is think about what I have achieved till now 1) friends, subscribers 2) a little bit of money 3) some knowledge. All of these motivates me to blog more. Thanks for the comment, Ryan Jeevan Jacob John
  30. Patricia says:
Hi Jeevan I think you have done a great job with your post. I personally find it easier to motivate myself with my blog when I am doing the things I enjoy like writing posts, answer questions from my readers and blog commenting. However when it comes to all things techie; that's when I really have to motivate myself as I am such a technophobe. So that is when the challenge comes to not procrasinate lol Thanks for sharing and all the best on your blogging journey. Patricia Perth Australia
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Hello Patricia (@lavenderuses), Thanks. That's a great way to motivate yourself. I am glad that you enjoy writing posts and answering your comments. For me, I don't like procrastinating when it comes to blogging ; For example : I got idea about this post, framed my post, typed it up and published it for review. But sometimes, I just like to procrastinate ? (which is not good). Anyway, Thanks for the comment. Welcome and Thanks for your wonderful feedback, Jeevan Jacob John
  31. Rahul says:
To be honest with you , i always talk about how motivation plays a huge role in good blogging ,or let me say , great blogging ! Motivation almost is enough to get a very successful affair , of course goals are on the top and i agree with what you said , but still "motivation is the basic structure of your blogging career" ! of course you have done a good job !! thank You ;-)
    • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Thanks for the comment @mazakaro. Thank you for agreeing with me. Motivation plays a huge role into blogging (not only blogging but also the Human Mind). From a psychological perspective Motivation is the reason why we are doing certain (all) things in the world. Motivation is the reason why am I here, it is the reason why I am replying on to your comment. Thanks and Welcome ! Thanks for the Great Comment, Jeevan Jacob John Hope we can connect in the future.
