Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Clickday!

January 17, 2011 - Last Modified: January 17, 2011 by Tammy Frumkin

InfoLinks Daily Clicks

A “click”, is a beautiful sound to any publisher or advertiser’s ear.  Those valuable “clicks” are people clicking online ads; which are truly the bread and butter of bloggers and website owners.  It’s what empowers them to continue publishing online.  There is much speculation about online advertising concerning what factors impact monetization.  In this study we ask:  Which days of the week online ads get the most clicks?

Infolinks opened up their database of over 40,000 websites and analyzed data spanning all of 2010 to find the answer to this question.  After compiling and averaging all of the information, the daily mean was easily extracted.  The results of the study are interesting and equally as valuable.

Infolinks

Tuesday received the most clicks out of any other day of the week. So for the purpose of this study, Tuesday is the benchmark and has a value of 100*. Tuesday and Wednesday are clearly the best days in terms of engagement, both performing in the top 10%.  Sunday received almost half (45% less) of the amount of clicks as our benchmark (Tuesday) and is the apparently the least effective day to engage response to online advertisements.

The entire weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, received the least amount of clicks. Perhaps on these days, most hibernate from the virtual world and consequently click less on ads online. Website owners can surmise that on holidays and other important occasions there will be less traffic and less revenue because people generally unplug on these days, and it seems that the weekend is no exception.

The favorable results for midweek days are possibly connected with the “midweek slump” many experience.  Maybe this phenomenon actually attracts people to take time out to read blogs, which in turn result in a response to online ads?  Nevertheless, we can be sure that there is a sure spike in activity during these days.

The results may not be shocking to those in tune with the behavior of ads – but the results further solidify the truth.  Advertisers and publishers can utilize this “click” data for smarter investments and also higher payouts.  By concentrating advertising efforts on Tuesday, Wednesday and even Monday, higher engagement can be accomplished and in turn higher revenue earned.

Interesting however I noticed this effect before in my publisher account. CTR dips during weekends and starts to improve from Monday to Wed. Anyway Friday too seems an average day compared to other working days.
  2. Tammy Frumkin says:
Love all the feedback thanks! We have another study coming out this week, so stay tuned. If you have any specific questions about Infolinks service, feel free to email us at support@infolinks.com :)
  3. Morgan Barnhart says:
Tammy, Very interesting! I'm so horrible when it comes to analyzing but this extremely helpful. Thanks for this!
  4. Robert Dempsey says:
I think this is contextual though (no pun intended). On my freelance site Sundays have been some of the highest traffic days. Perhaps that's because I'm talking with freelancers and we (yes I am one to some extent) work all the time. It does give me more reason to test a different posting schedule next week though :)
  5. Rosie says:
Very interesting study. I wouldn't have thought that tuesdays get more clicks than friday since that is my "lame" day at work, but good to know. On weekends I also try to avoid my computer and the internet since I get way too much of it during the week.
  6. Kevin says:
How ironic! I just signed up for infolinks yesterday. NICE! I've heard so much GREAT things about infolinks from other bloggers. Since this is the year I monetize my blog, I thought I'd give infolinks a try. I'm definitely excited about that. I could see it now CLICK CLICK CLICK :)
  7. Tia says:
Mondays are always bizchickblogs' best days for some reason. But Tuesday and Wednesday do not fall far behind. Interestingly, Sunday can be a good day for us; it depends on what's been posted over the weekend. Saturdays are consistently lower all around!
  8. TJ McDowell says:
I just checked my own stats on my website to see which days were the most popular. Looking over the past 4 months, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were the big winners. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were the losers. What I thought I remembered was that Monday was my best day generally, and in fact it was quite a few times, but not always. At times Tuesday or Wednesday was the high point for the week. I think this is great insight for businesses. We've also noticed that those days tend to be when we get the most phone calls for clients wanting to book sessions. Closing on a Monday may not be the best idea after all.
  9. Alex says:
I think the number of clicks per day depends heavily on what kind of website you have and what demographics you are targeting. If you target people that work during the week and have the week-end free and you website is involved in something that is related to week-end activies, then you might get a lot of clicks on the week-end and a very low amount during the week. The same applies for website that have information that have information which people may need during the week, like traffic information, weather etc. So this statistics may not be accurate and correct for everyone.
  10. Andy says:
Good research, and it should settle a debate I've been having (a friend thinks that Friday is a good day to publish new content and get clicks)
  11. Vuong says:
Hopefully one day Infolinks will be my first first choice in managing to make some green paper from my blog.
  12. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Tammy, All statistic is important if you have enough of information to built with and that do you have with your over 40.000 websites. But I wondering over if you can control and give me/us information of price level they buy on different days, which price level is the most sales doing in, ect, ect.
  13. Tammy Frumkin says:
Hey Val, I understand your concerns. However, the great thing about Infolinks is that you can control how the In-Text ads appear. You can choose the color, frequency, location and even how the underline will appear. Our publishers find that it is non-intrusive to their content, cause let's face it - content is King and you don't mess with the King. :) If you have more questions, shoot us an email to support@infolinks.com. Tammy
  14. Val says:
Very useful data, thank you! I also noticed that weekends were slow in response. I'm still on the fence about adding infolinks to my blog. Some bloggers say it is highly profitable, second only to AdSense and compatible to run alongside with it. But to me, those links look very spammy. I'm not sure I want my pages to look that way.
  15. Tinh says:
Interesting news and I guess there are a lot of fraudulent clicks too :-)
  16. Tammy Frumkin says:
Hey everyone, Thanks for the feedback. For privacy purposes I couldn't provide exact numbers for you, but I hope the information was useful nonetheless. I believe its important to take all research in, put it away in our marketing arsenal and use it for our advantage. Tammy http://www.infolinks.com www.facebook.com/infolinks
  17. Sujith says:
An interesting statistics, thanks for sharing. It's not clear why Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday ... After a holiday break people click extensively in the first three days of the week and subsequently loosing interest... :-)
  18. Rose says:
Thanks for providing this study. It somehow give an idea to bloggers and website owners to expect clicks from their blogs. Today is tuesday, more money will come out today. But seriously, let us have this is mind that if we are creative enough then we can take advantage of content of this article. Thanks Tammy, keep up the good work.
  19. Ileane says:
Tammy, This is surprising statistic to me. Dan Zarrella has done a lot of similar studies he calls The Science of Blogging and The Science of Social Media. The first question that comes to my mind is - what time zone is being used as the framework for this? I mean, when it's Monday for me, isn't it Tuesday in Australia already? I also wonder what the volume of clicks is. If they're talking about 40k websites, do they have any idea how many Infolinks are being viewed on a daily basis? Great topic, thanks for bringing this one up.
  20. DiTesco says:
Great stuff. It is always good to know how users behavior are monitored and stats like this are my favorites. Coincidence or not, I found via my own stats, that the worst days for just about anything was on weekends, reason why I avoid posting anything new. Now, while I was concentrating more at "times" during the day, I never did pay too much attention on specific days. That said, I'll be experimenting on it tomorrow and see if infolinks stats could be used as a benchmark for other "behaviors"
  21. Hung Hong says:
I heard similar information from Aweber. Tomorrow is...Tuesday Cheer
  22. Tom says:
That is really interesting! I mean I can understand why Sunday is a slow day for clicks - but why would tuesday/wednesday get more clicks than monday or thursday. Has anyone put a reasoning behind this?
  23. Vivek Parmar says:
this is about infolinks but what about google adsense??
