How Fast a New Post gets Indexed with Thesis Theme

January 25, 2010 - Last Modified: January 26, 2010 by Michael Aulia

google trends

I was running out of ideas to write a post a few days ago so I thought I tried to visit Google Trends and checked out what’s happening.

Normally I could only see celebrities or general news on Trends and nothing that I could use for my technology blog at Craving Tech. However, a few days ago I saw a “hot” trend of people searching for the “Tiny YouTube Converter”. So I thought I should have written a topic about it and see what would happen.

The topic was so hot that there were lots of sites written about it in an instant. There were around 1,000,000 sites returned on a search for “tiny youtube converter” keywords. I didn’t hesitate anyway and started to write about the same thing on my blog. After all, I’ve been hearing how Google like the Thesis theme and all those marketing words I thought I wouldn’t believe blindly.

As soon as I hit the publish button, I waited for about 10 min and start searching for my post on Google. Of course, 10 minutes to get indexed sounds a bit crazy so I waited again. Half an hour later, I found my post already indexed by Google! (using “site:cravingtech.com tiny youtube converter” to search).  Google actually wrote that the page was indexed 29 minutes ago. So yeah, 29 minutes after the post was published, it was already on Google, it’s amazing!

But I’ll be honest, this test was a bit inaccurate because as soon as I published the post, I submitted my post to:

  • BlogEngage
  • Reddit
  • Yahoo Buzz
  • Mixx
  • Twitter
  • 3-4 blogs with Commentluv plug-in installed

So the question still remains: Does Google really like the Thesis theme structure so much that the post got indexed so quickly? Don’t expect miracles, though. Because even though my post was published, I still couldn’t find my post on the first 20 Google search result pages.

Do you have any great indexing stories to tell about the Thesis theme?

    • Hesham says:
mmmm.. didn't think about that before, but I don't see a problem!

It's great that your post was indexed so quickly, but this is not an indication of Google favoring the Thesis theme. In fact I find most of the blogs I maintain for my clients (which do not use the Thesis theme) get indexed in just a couple if minutes after publishing and up to about 5-10 minutes at the maximum. Thesis may be SEO friendly, but any blog that is also structured in an SEO friendly way will get the same idexation advantage
    • Hesham says:
I think you are right Lisa! It's not about Thesis Theme.. really!
  3. James says:
There are so many factors to think about when trying to work out why your post got indexed so quickly. Any well structured theme would have the same onpage benefit as the theme you have, the greater factor is what your off page profile is like. If your site has a higher PR then you will get crawled more oftern, Google have been working very hard on getting the freshest inforation they can. If you ping bookmark new content that will of course speed things up. In my opinion the theme and its structure only pays a very small role if a role at all in getting your content indexed quickly.

My posts been taking up to 2 days to appear in the serps, I just followed your routine and submitted todays post to reddit, yahoo buzz & mixx and within 10 minutes my blog post was found!! Thanks for sharing this insight, I believe this further proves its not the theme its the off site measure you take to attract the ol might google bot.
  5. Udegbunam Chukwudi says:
The time it takes Google to index a post depends greatly and on how predictable your posting schedule is. Ever since I adopted the Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9am posting schedule, my posts have been appearing in Google in less than 2 hours. As you rightly stated, my blog posts goes out to Twitter and Facebook via Twitter immediately it's published so that might also affect it ;) .-= Udegbunam Chukwudi@Work Online Nigeria´s last blog ..StrictlyOnlineBiz’s Top Blog Posts Of The Week 6 =-.

A friend of mine uses Thesis theme and swears by it. In less than 6 months her site has gone up to a PR 4 with most of her pages ranking on the front page on google. She claims that it has excellent SEO so it's not the first time I have heard about this! I do admit though - any site needs some links to let google know about it... I have a little tool myself that I use, but if secrets were shared then everyone would be jumping on the band wagon and then it would hit rock bottom too! .-= Kirsty @ Rowing Machines for Sale´s last blog ..Concept ii Rower =-.

Sorry to burst any bubbles, but, you did some good promotion on high powered sites, probably SEO'd the hell outa the article, and got it in 29 minutes, correct? No theme, no SEO, no promotion on its own, no nuthin...nada zip zero work got this post indexed in 3 hrs... http://www.dennisedell.com/4699/hello-welcome-to-the-all-new-dennisedell-comdirectsaleswebmarketing-com-merged-direct-sales-coaching-blog/ .-= Dennis Edell´s last blog ..The Time Has Come. Apart from submitting it to the sites I listed on the post, nope. As for SEO work, I only optimized the title and mention the keyword of "Tiny YouTube Converter" on the post a few times. That was all .-= Michael Aulia´s last blog ..How Tennis scoring sytem technology works =-.

Rather than guessing about SEO algorithm, I can actually answer your question here as I have ranked my friend's site to first page of Google for keyword Muscle Building Supplements. 1.) It has nothing to do with Thesis Theme. You can have the plain old boring Blogger templates, and do just as well. 2.) Don't worry about 1,000,000 search results. The only sites you need to worry about are the first 5 in the first page of Google. 3.) Little or nobody are building anchor text links "tiny youtube converter", which means you can get the #1 spot easily. Here is the problem why you are not on the first two pages of Google: 1) Your site has nofollow tag on EVERYTHING. Your post Tiny YouTube Converter Review has no link juice. Your homepage has PR 4, but your posts are getting NO JUICE. NONE. 2.) You need to have a dofollow tag on a sitemap or blog post archive. 3.) Feature your post Tiny Youtube Converter Review on the homepage with Dofollow tag, and you will see it on first page of Google in less than a week. Since everything else is nofollow, most of the PR 4 juice will be passed onto Tiny Youtube Converter Review. I hope this helps. Regards, Kai Lo

I don't know what the Thesis Theme have more special than any other themes , but a lot of webmasters are talking about this theme that it's amazing how fast your articles are indexed. Michael, If Thesis makes you think that your blog gets indexed faster.. then the question is: What does the theme do? I saw some wise answers in the comments above.. I think, that the best and the most real reason is that Thesis has some special code. From SEO we know, that the simplier is code, the easier your website gets indexed. Thesis seems to have some genius code :) I barely belive that a theme might do something with meta tags, sitemap or else. This work belongs to wordpress plugins, I guess :) .-= Allan´s last blog ..7 Reasons URL Shorteners are Risky for Your SEO =-.

"the simpler is code, the easier your website gets indexed" This is a good point! and this is exactly why I will remove lots of stuff from side bar and some buttons as well from this blog, I always feel the need to to some blogging cleanse! Thanks for the good comment Allan.

I don't know about thesis wordpress theme but my recent post also got indexed my google within 2 minutes of writing it. So half an hour for Thesis is way to long. Also, I don't think Google's indexing depends on the theme, it depends on your site popularity and site's rating. If you are getting high traffic then google will automatically index your site faster! .-= Rohit Sane@Tech-Freak Stuff´s last blog ..Breaking News: TechCrunch.com Hacked! =-.

  13. lawmacs says:
I am not sure about the theming issue here pages are indexed when crawled by the bots so if your site was not crawled then the pages wont get indexed right so why are we concern about the theme shouldn't we be thinking of the fact that our site meets the rquirement of the bots and are of relevance and that is the reason for the quick indexing i don't believe in the fact that it is the theme it more of the theme structure optimized coding take the same theme changed the name write another post and see if it gets index that fast. .-= lawmacs´s last blog ..Why Do Bloggers Blog =-.
    • Hesham says:
I think one good thing is to use Google webmaster tools and submit your submit sitemap to it to tell Google when ever you post a new post for fast indexing! I must say "I think" because with Google nothing is knowledgeable 100%

  14. Keith Bloemendaal says:
I would definitely like to see more testing on this with different variables. I have never been a believer that a theme gets you indexed faster, but that site promotion does ie: links from sites that already get indexed fast. I have heard that some themes help with seo because of proper coding but not getting indexed faster. .-= Keith Bloemendaal´s last blog ..My Blogs Are Like Children =-.
    • Hesham says:
I agree with you 100% Themes is not a reason for any blog to be indexed faster, but let's say the good theme will have: 1- Good "meta tags" (Title, description, keywords) 2- Title of post set to h1 tag 3- separating CSS from main files of theme 4- Speed load And this is what all good themes has these days "not only Thesis" and this is all what you need to get indexed! (Faster or not faster it's not the case!) The only thing I think Thesis is good at is that you can control so many things and change options on your blog just by some clicks and faster from inside your blog dashboard which is a lot of work with other themes, I even tried ElegantThemes new panel and it gives you all the SEO option as well!
      • Michael Aulia says:
Great reply, Hesham I was surprised that a theme I used in the past didn't actually put h1 tag on the post titles. Lucky I found that out .-= Michael Aulia´s last blog ..The winner: Hyundai Santa Fe R Diesel =-.
        • Hesham says:
The H1 tag was a problem for so many theme until Thesis fixed this problem and got good reputation, but this was one or two years back which equals 10 years form our days in offline life ;) Lots of themers trying to take of the H1 tag, it's the most important tag for your website, note that you can not have more than one h1 tag in a page!
  15. Pascal says:
Hi Michael, Yes. Really Thesis helps us to get indexed fast. There was arguments going every where about why bloggers recommend thesis all these times and are they over hyped? But as a thesis user and done a lot lot thesis tutorials, I can tell sure that thesis blogs get indexed faster than others. I have been running several blogs and i get indexed my non-thesis blogs at least after 2 hours even though i am using ping o matic and google xml sitemaps and all in one seo. But in my thesis tutorial blog fourblogger , in initial days , i got indexed within 1 to 2 hours. But now i get indexed less than 30 minutes. Some times i can see my post within 10 minutes also. I am sure that i do not submit my blog immediately within 10 minutes to any blogengage, digg, stumbleupon etc. So i am sure thesis does this magic.
    • Michael Aulia says:
I guess this is the opposite of DiTesco's comments but I'd have to agree that the argument that Thesis sites tend to be indexed faster is still a yes and a no .-= Michael Aulia´s last blog ..The winner: Hyundai Santa Fe R Diesel =-.
    • Hesham says:
I don't think it's about Thesis as a major factor of getting your post indexed, I think the Domain name age is much more powerful factor that will help you to get your pages indexed less than 5 minutes by Google! By the way, one tip is maybe you are not following while submitting posts to bookmarks website is to change the title and the description of any blog post you are submitting to avoid duplication of content (I am sorry to bother you with this twice as I told you the same at BlogEngage in my comment... but), these little 2 things will maybe a few seconds from you and it's what will search engines are looking for!

        • Hesham says:
Yeah! I sow that and I was not sure how you did it ;)
  16. Tom says:
I think that a lot of it could have to do with the promoting that you did! A lot of those would get visited by Google very frequently and I would bet that is why it got index that quick. .-= Tom@Free Squeeze Pages´s last blog ..Your Small List Can Equal Big Profits =-.
    • Michael Aulia says:
I guess I should have run another test without any promotion and check out for myself what's gonna happen. But even then, it might just be Google liking my blog's fresh contents daily .-= Michael Aulia´s last blog ..The winner: Hyundai Santa Fe R Diesel =-.
  17. DiTesco says:
Unfortunately I do not use the Thesis theme and I am somewhat hesitant to either agree or disagree with the fact that your post got indexed very quickly due to using Thesis. I also have been running some test on my own post and they are all indexed in average of 5 minutes or less this time. I think the reason your post gets indexed fast is because you are constantly crawled by the bots. Anyway, it is good to know that regardless of the reason, Google does love your blog:) Congrats .-= DiTesco´s last blog ..Using Alexa For Simplified SEO =-.
    • Michael Aulia says:
Yup, this is quite a controversial topic indeed. I did a lot of Google search before I really bought Thesis for myself. Even until know, the topic is still controversial to me as to whether it is true or not :) .-= Michael Aulia´s last blog ..The winner: Hyundai Santa Fe R Diesel =-.
    • Hesham says:
I some how recommend Thesis because it will force you to learn so many things if you like to play with it, and you will feel kind of safe and controlling your blog theme (no bad behaviors like what I experienced with some other free themes) Talking about indexing fast, I have a 2 years old domain name which has a fast indexing blog on it, I don't know (not sure) but I have this feeling that domain age and active blog with so many internal and external links will get indexed fast what ever kind of theme you are using!
