Why Guest Posting is Such a Good Idea

September 8, 2011 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Jimmy Sigenstroem

Guest Posting

Guest Posting works in two ways, either by you writing a post on another’s blog, or you let others write on yours. There are major benefits for both the owner of the blog and the ones who write the posts, but there is also some work associated with it. So unless you intend to carry out the entire task, then don´t because in the end it will only harm yourself!

Guest Post on another’s blog

To get permission to write a guest post on another’s blog is fairly easy, but there are usually some rules to be respected in order for you to get your topic approved.
The rules / guidelines are mostly that:

  • The text is unique which means you haven’t published it anywhere else.
  • You fill out the author profile, where you will usually also be allowed to post a few links.
  • The email you use is connected with a Gravatar profile.
  • It’s xxx number of words.
  • You may make xx number of links in text.
  • You must respond to the comments coming in.

And it is here in the last rule where most work occurs, but also where you create connections and relationships to bloggers on that blog which will also benefit your own blog.

But why write a guest post on another blog?

Because you get:

  • Backlinks
  • Targeted visits to your blog / website
  • Your blog becomes known
  • You improve your writing skills
  • You become better known within your niche
  •  You increase your link building and SEO

Guest Post at your own blog

There are several good reasons why you should allow guest posts on your blog. It can be because you’re running out of good ideas, but the primary reason should be that it creates additional traffic to your blog because the writer will spread the word about your blog. And the fact that you get quality text on your blog which can help to improve your blog SEO.

This means that you get:

  • Backlinks
  • New users on your blog / website
  • Quality content
  • New traffic
  • Your blog to become more known
  • To increase your link building and SEO

But it’s important that you set some requirements on what the text can and should be about, such as SEO, link building, wordpress themes, currency rates or recipes. In short, you set the guidelines. It’s important that you set them before you start so you know what you are looking for, and it is equally important that you stick to them, because a blog post about grilling spareribs is not relevant if your blog is an SEO blog. In order to set the right requirements for your blog, you might want to find some inspiration. This you can get from other blogs that allow guest posts.

Get started

There are obviously differences in how easy it is to get started with guest posts on your blog, and getting a post on another blog. Getting a post published on another blog should be the first thing, because this will also spread the word about your blog, hence its popularity.

Places that are open to guest posts could be, for example these blogs.

  • Cumluv
  • Famous Bloggers
  • W3blog

You can find more relevant blogs by searching on “guest post” or “Guest posting”, or just how you find blogs it’s up to you.!

Getting others to write a guest post on your blog is harder, because those who are writing guest posts are always looking for some good value for their texts. They all have different things that they view as important for them, but based on a WordPress blogs they might be Cumluv and the new CommentLuv Premium plugin that has KeywordLuv, the blog should have some daily visitors. And from personal experience the higher you’re PageRank is the better and the easier it is to find others that will posts on the blog.

So, if  there was ever talk about a situation that is win win then this is it.!

Excellent article describing the benefits of guest posts in a concise manner. It seems that many people may not realize the inherent benefit. Thanks for laying it all out there.
  2. Abhi Balani says:
I love accepting guest post and NOW I love guest posting because I have written my very first guest post for a blogging contest (linked below). :-) And I am really excited after that. Let me know what you think about it. :-)
  3. Robert says:
Nice post there, the only thing with guest posting is that it does take a lot of time and you're never sure that your guest post will be accepted.
    • Jimmy says:
Well there is a way to go that can get your post accepted almost every time, that´s by writing the guest post like you would write it on your own blog. And if you do that and it for some reason doesn't gets approved, then you can post it at your own blog or try another place. But if you write a relevant post, that 's well written with relevant links then your chances for approval very high.
  4. Michael Aulia says:
What I hate about allowing guest writers on your blog is that it attracts those SEO article marketers who are trying to get some backlinks for their clients for free. Some write great articles but most of the links you link back are junk (well not all) And the quality suffers too as most of them are just trying to meet a minimum quota of words :| Just be careful. I recently opened my blog for guest posting and just found out about this the hard way lol
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
Unfortunately I also learned it the hard way, this is also why I have change my rules so that I want to see some of the guest bloggers posts on other blogs. In an effort to stop those who don´t interact with users that comments on their post. ;) But as long there is something to gain by guest posting, there will be those who try to take advantage of other blog owners. So as you write we have to be careful, or we can end up hurting our blogs.!
  5. Jane says:
Being a passionate guest blogger myself, I couldn't agree more. Apart from traffic, exposure and backlinks, guest posting also makes us good writers.
    • Jimmy says:
My writing(English) skills has really improved, after I started writing English articles and blog posts. So I can only agree with you on that point, that´s also why that I´m already working on the next article. ;) I just wish that more ppl would open their blogs for guest posts, and of course the other way around.! :D
  6. Peter says:
Guest posts really helped me and my blog to survive because if it wasn't there on my blog it wouldn't survive for this long. I hope you post more great posts like this because I like this subject.
    • Jimmy says:
I can guarantee that you are not the only one, whose blog has been saved by guest bloggers. At one point we all hit the wall run out of ideas on what to write about, it has saved my blog a couple of time now. And I think it´s save to say that it hasn't the last time I have used guest bloggers. ;)
  7. Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
I love guest posting, though I also love people to guest post on my blog, but I had rejected most of the guest post on my blog, for the reason, I had a very strict rules, and that is quality, I had seen some people who rewrite post in another form using other blogger's content and thought it can pass through my sensor but they can't, I had my way of checking duplicate content so it is not easy to guest post on my blog, up until now, there is only 1 guest poster on my blog. Secondly I had seen some post in some well know blog accepting guest poster who do not reply to comment, I hate it and I don't like it, I mean you guest post and you don't reply to comment... so what's the reason you guest post? Sound stupid? Definitely! So I hereby would like to say, if anyone want to get benefit out of guest posting, for the love of God, please reply to people who take their time to read and comment, these readers might just be your potential follower or even customers.
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
You definitely have to be aware of double content, and for that very same reason is why I´m using copyscape to check new posts for double content. You can´t know if a guest poster is gonna rely to comments on their post, so as a webmaster you are taking that chance every time you get a new guest poster. But yes it´s stupid if the guest blogger doesn't reply, he or she is missing out on backlinks, relationships with other bloggers and in the end that means that they don´t get the chance to write a guest post on their blogs.
    • Abhi Balani says:
That's very true. When I started accepting guest posting on my blog, to be honest, I was not aware of those paid backlinks builder. And that, gave a bad impression to my readers. But now I do a full research about the guest writer before publishing his/her article on my blog. But I guess if you do it on my blog, I'll not need to find out your information. LOL see oddblogger . com
  8. sam says:
No doubt in that Guest post is too useful for any blogger because guest post reduce much burden from a blogger when he/she in busy schedule. From my point of view Guest post can prove beneficial for both blogger as well as. Guest post writer is writing a blog post for you that means he/she is saving much your time which means you can do another work with this option.
    • Jimmy says:
Absolutely it´s very beneficial for both the blog owner and the guest blogger, they are getting a lot out of it. In my case(On my own blog) I get more time to work on my themes and my other sites, and it gives me the chance to give theme users something back for all the backlinks I get from them. And by guest posting on a blog like famousbloggers, you get the chance to find new users/commenter's for your own blog, you get your name out there and so on. So there are no reasons why you shouldn't write guest posts, as long as you write good posts and reply on the comments like @Wong Chendong wrote.
  9. Marcos Mateu says:
Guest posting is something I have in mind but never tried before. I have a Poker related website in Spanish and other bloggers always say no to my requests. I have a new IM blog right now with just 2 posts but I will be adding more with time. Once I have enough content of my own I will try to guest post around. The benefits are huge. Nice article by the way. Saludos Marcos
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
Well instead of trying to get post about poker published on other blogs, you could write a post about seo, linkbuilding or any other subject. And then use the author info, to link to your poker site with one link that might do the trick. ;) I don't think that most blog owners would mind that, if your post is good.
  10. Alan Tay says:
Business or Internet Business is all about creating a good network. By doing guest post, we can expand our network list and know more people. I didn't know about the power of guest post until I begin blogging on other people site. Now I want to start my own guest post and glad I found this article that tells me why I should start my own guest post.
  11. Ming Jong Tey says:
Guest blogging will not only increase the traffic to your site but also the relationship build up with the blog owner, which might leads to JV, working on project together, etc… It is certainly a great marketing strategy. The key is to provide quality content to serve the reader! Cheers, Ming
    • Hesham says:
so true Ming, I've passed through all this!
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
Absolutely right on.! Guest blogging has given me more follows on Twitter, not even the fact at my themes has been downloaded more the 10k time has given me the same number of followers. And those followers / users are the key to quality guest bloggers.!
  12. Missy says:
If for whatever reason, you can't guest post on your own, outsource the task. I know several good blog owners who provide this service (myself included) that are over flowing with clients. As mentioned in this article, guest posting has many benefits. Get on board now or be left behind. Cheers!
    • Jimmy Sigenstroem says:
If you have any tips on getting good guest posters, then due share.! I know that a lot of blog owners are struggling to get guest posters, some are blogs with a low pagerank or blogs with a high that spammed with bad posts.
  13. Andrew Bailey says:
guest blogging has transformed this blog and it's really made a difference to mine. i don't think it'd still be running if I didn't have such awesome guest bloggers providing so much great content!
    • Jimmy says:
And I can say the same with my own blog, I use most of my time designing and updating existent themes, so that i haven´t the time to write all the posts that I would like to. So guest bloggers are their weight worth in gold. ;)
  14. Wasim Ismail says:
Guest posts is definitely a win win situation for both the blog owner and also the author, Getting the right person to right on your blog as a guest is definitely a task, as your giving them your space to express their opinions, I have found myblogguest.com quite useful in finding good writes that can be my guests :)
    • Jimmy Sigenstrom says:
One thing you shouldn´t do, is open your blog so that everyone can add their profile if they wan´t. I did that in the start, and damn I got spammed with a lot of crap so check your users before adding them. And myblogguest.com is a good place to do that, one of my writers was found on that page. :)
