Why You Need Effective Web Copywriting Strategies

March 8, 2011 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Rose Martin

Web Copywriting Strategies

Web copywriting is not always easy, and that is why some people prefer to get professional SEO services to help them out. Good copy is necessary because it makes it easy for your target market to understand how your site works and how it can help them.

One of the main goals of web copy writing is to enhance an online user’s experience on a site. This is applicable to both navigational and marketing copy.

When writing copy for a site, you need to understand that people do not read online information the same way they go through print material. It is important to remember that your online target market is active and not passive. If an online user does not find the content that you include on the site to be helpful, they will not spend too much time on it. Writing a lot of text for a site does not appeal to online users, therefore it is important to keep things simple and brief. It should take someone a very short time to go through the entire site. The information that you include should be believable. This means that you have to back up what you say.

If you use SEO services, the professionals will help you to anticipate some of the questions that online users will have when they log on to your site. There are various things that users want to find out once they are on your site. They want to know what the site is going to do for them and how to navigate through it. If the design of the site does not make the navigation process easy, copy can be very effective. Do not assume that online users will figure things out on your site. Most people do not bother to figure out how a site works if it is not explained, and that is how you end up losing prospective clients.

Keeping the copy short!

Another strategy that you can apply during web copy writing is keeping the copy short. Text should only be included in parts of the website where online users expect to find detailed information. In most pages, you should make sure there is only about one or two lines of text.

Keep it Simple!

It is also important to ensure the copy you come up with for your site is simple. It should be something that online users can read through without trying to understand what it means. Your online users should not have to read the copy a second time in order to understand it. Each idea should be communicated in about a line or two. Avoid explaining an idea in three lines because if the first two lines do not communicate the idea, it means you need to come up with something simpler. In some cases, an idea may need further explanation but this does not mean you should get longer copy. To explain an idea in detail, you should provide a link that online users can click on to get additional information.

Straight to the point!

copy writingWeb copywriting needs to be straight to the point, but this does not mean that is has to be boring. The writing in the copy needs to be vivid with a light tone.

It is not possible to reach each person with your writing, therefore it is important to ensure that you focus on a specific audience. This is important because it makes your audience feel like you are communicating with each one of them directly. If your audience is divided into different groups, you can direct each one of them to a different page. This ensures that each person who visits your site gets appropriate information.

I so agree. There is so many websites and blog posts out there that sound exactly the same! Keep it simple & to the point! I love it. Short and sweet!

Hello Rose, You are right, I think that many people should look at what kind of articles people love the best. It's list articles, because readers (especially online readers) like to have all the information without the fluff, and they want in an a digestible way, short and concise. People tend to run from densely packed content without break lines that is hard to read.

I think it is important for any business to have a nicely written and devised copy for its website. I think the copy necessarily does not need to be short but needs to be able to persuade the customer easily. Also the content should be written in simple words and not using highly difficult words which the customer/reader may not understand. Overall some great tips for copywriting. I have been trying to increase my knowledge about copywriting and this post adds to it. Thanks a lot for the post Rose

You're welcome Shiva.:) I hope you can use these simple pointers. Thanks for your idea on the persuasion thing. Totally agree on that.:)

I think in addition to the copy being short and to the point, it has to make sense for the site - it has to have a purpose. Great copy can end up being wasted if the plan isn't sound. Great post.
    • Rose says:
Definitely! A lot of people are trying to create really brief copies that it makes no sense anymore. A really good copywriter can explain important details in 1-3 sentences. No beating around the bush.

Copywriting is important. Many businesses value high quality copy and it's important to get that message across in less content as possible. SEO is important, but people don't want to bored with reams of text. It's important to use heading tags, bold tags and make sure your content is easy to read and gives a strong call to action. Many online marketers need to focus on developing content that wins potential leads. It's also a good thing to learn about Google AdWords and the Google Optimiser this will also help you with generating leads and monitoring which people will convert into leads. Copywriting is one part of the equation, however, measuring what works for optimisation is even more important.
    • Rose says:
I agree. Copywriting is just one of the many elements that are vital in improving one's website. I just think though that though they're all equally important, a good copy should always come on top of the checklist. We wouldn't want to optimize bad contents, right?:)
  6. Claire Talbott says:
As a copywriter, I agreed with a lot of your information. However, I have to disagree on keeping the copy short. Your goal should be to communicate all the information the readers wants to know for that page. Can you really provide useful, helpful information in only two sentences? If you only have two sentences of information (unless its a product page) why even have the web page? You are exactly right about keeping the content simple and too the point. I'm not saying you should add unnecessary words to make it longer. But don't be afraid of long copy if it helps or informs the reader. Long copy on the web, if done well, out performs short copy. Because your online audience is proactive and often in scanning mode, you do want to make the content easy to read—engaging headline, bulleted lists and subheads. And have your most important information above the fold. Also, if you're using keywords it's going to be far easier to work them into 250+ words of text, than a couple sentences. Thanks, Claire.
    • Rose says:
Hello Claire! Thanks for the input.:)You have a good point as regards providing longer sentences instead of a short copy. I guess depending on the type of article you're doing, like emails or newsletter, of course short copies won't wont. But website-wise, I think brief sentences in homepages are enough to tell a preview of what the websites is all about. Then again, that's just my opinion. Because personally, I'm not into long introductions and long contents in 'about us' pages. I would prefer longer sentences though if I'm looking at testimonials and reviews.:)
    • Christine Miranda says:
I agree with Claire. Content should not be short, it should be informative enough that people will find it sensible. If you add specific markers as Claire mentioned like bullets, even a long article can be a good one.
  7. Delena Silverfox says:
This is awesome! Lately I've been taking approaching my online work more consciously, and I realize that I'm an extremely demanding visitor to a website. It's something I never really noticed before, but if it takes more than two or three seconds to load I'm getting critical already, and if the type is too long I tend to scroll to the end and try to pick up a key point here and there. Whatever catches my eye, pretty much. If I'm this nit-picky, then I have to imagine there are worse visitors out there, and I need to be conscientious! Delena
    • Rose says:
:) well everyone's a unique visitor, right? Having a website should not be about pleasing the visitors, but giving as much information to them as possible without making them leave the page pronto.
