Why Being Famous has got Nothing to Do with Making Money from your Blog

November 10, 2010 - Last Modified: November 10, 2010 by Peter

Famous Blogger

Sure, people are constantly telling us that through blogging we can make a few hundred dollars here and there; but don’t you think there is something more than just being able to bring in a bit of cash every once in a while? You shouldn’t put emphasis on making money as being your only goal – we need to aim and aspire for something greater than this. If you only think of the cash – the only way your heading is backwards. Time to step up the pace – were going to go looking for some better goals in your blogging career.

Aren’t we just a teeny – weeny bit lost?

Sorry guys, blogging isn’t just about making money. There are heaps of other reasons why you should be blogging. You might be looking out for fame or all you want to do is build up a strong group of friends.

One of the best things I see out of blogging is that you can build up a strong following, and if you top one up that is really strong; whatever you say might have a strong enough influence to change the whole blogosphere. A single post might spark hundreds of posts on other blogs. Now that’s some serious power isn’t it?

Shouldn’t we still be aiming for something?

Never forget the importance of aiming for something – if you don’t then you’re going to burn yourself out quick and have no reason to continue.

~ Blogs are whatever we make them. Defining ‘blog’ is a fool’s errand. ~ Michael Conniff

Do what you think is the right thing to do and don’t let anyone else get in your way. Actually aim for something because you might reach somewhere if you do. As the quote suggests, don’t define “blog,” make it whatever you want it to be and achieve what you want.

Do you seriously think your going somewhere?

Sure we all aim to make money through blogging, but does that really achieve anything. Being famous has got nothing to do with making money from your blog. Why the hell then would someone be happy with earning 50,000 dollars through blogging when they can make more money out of sitting at a desk, working for someone else? There has got to be more than all this, doesn’t there?

Making any amount of money from your blog is fun! I can't disagree there. Generating a following is even more fun! Great article.
  2. vicky says:
yes, people who start blogging for just the purpose of making money fail. only people with original content wins in the end.
  3. Tinh says:
Great Peter! Blogging is not purely making money as it is a great way to interact with readers and money will come when it should come :-)
  4. TJ McDowell says:
So your article got me thinking. One of the biggest reasons people go to Ivy League schools is to network with other influential people. Blogging could be used the same way to build up your network. The quality of your network is probably one of the biggest parts of making a successful business.
    • Peter J says:
Exactly. In rare cases do people actually make money from blogging - the most we can do is build a network for a business so we can make money.
  5. Joanne says:
Great points made there....There's more to life than to become famous. You get there by writing good content and doing thoughtful things for your readers.... like responding to comments left and emailing them thanking them for their submitted post if they have submitted one to your blog.Being courteous.

Hi peter Great article I think we should blog for lovin it and make money Passing on information is how most of us get started and sharing from your heart is helping others! Thanks diane
  7. Abhimanyu Singhal says:
Peter, I rather think that if one is famous and has traffic to his blog, he can always place ads and earn money, can't he? Regards, Abhimanyu
    • Peter J says:
I don't actually think advertising pulls in alot of money - it is more practical to build a business of your blog, over trying to survive through advertising. What happens if your blog fails then?
  8. Daniel Sharkov says:
Hey Peter, Blogging is definitely far more than a money making opportunity. Despite of the fact that many of the bloggers have started with the sole intention of making those precious dollars, after a while another kind of reasons start to take shape. Whether it be the fame you mentioned, building relationships and getting to know new people, or something totally different, money should not be placed in first place in my opinion. Of course having them as a motive to blog is not a bad thing either. After all money is what drives the world - no argue about it.
  9. James says:
Exactly when you do something for money it better no be something that has to do with passion. If you think your a good writer and just want to write about things to make money, then your not going to be successful. The true bloggers write because its there passion.
  10. Richard says:
Well, this is true everywhere. You can become famous or notorious without becoming rich. Although you can leverage your fame into possibly making some money.
  11. Andreas says:
Its correct that not all great bloggers make the same amount of money from their blogging efforts. Some may make much less than fellow bloggers who are much less experts but as long as famous bloggers are ok with it, why not?
    • Dennis Edell says:
I must be missing something Andreas, why should we care what famous bloggers think of us?
  12. Steve from My Online Business Strategy says:
Hey Peter, I think you hit the nail on the head! There are many people that think they are able to make money blogging and that is all that they will think about. Forgetting the fact that they will need to build up trust and a following. Then perhaps they will be able to make money online. Great read by the way.
  13. ZK says:
Boy simply love that pic ... really attractive ... JUST WANTED TO BE HONEST ;)
  14. Peter from Blogging Mechanics says:
Well, I think that it all depends on your aim that you set for yourself. If your main goal is to make money, then this what you should do. If your main purpose is to earn some sort of authority status, in your niche market, then this is what you should do. However, I think that the pure money making is not working anymore. You have to build something sustainable (which blog definitely is) in order to earn the privilege to make money online.
  15. Chadrack says:
Indeed this is something everyone will want to have a say about. First, I agree with every point of yours, blogging should not just be about making money. And of course being famous has nothing to do with making money. Let me also add that blogging is not even about being famous. As Michael put it, every one of us can always define what blogging is about to us. Here's something I read this morning: "Wealth, my son, should never be your goal in life... True wealth is of the heart, not of the purse." Thanks for sharing this.
  16. Mani Viswanathan says:
I agree with you. A famous blogger can't make enough money, if he doesn't have a mindset of earning money!
  17. Dennis Edell says:
I've always said, money is a hollow goal. Good article. :)
  18. Isabel Rodrigues - Pro Blogger Journey says:
I love blogging. I not just want to become famous but also earn money from my blog.
  19. The Bad Blogger says:
Well, I do aim for making money from blog, but my target of the aim is always wanted to show other people how knowledgeable I am, and most probably wanted to be better then some people out there...
  20. Dana says:
By blogging, I think I really go to somewhere -- to freedom exactly. Yeah, blogging is my wait to finally work on my own.
  21. Jan Husdal says:
My blog has certainly opened doors for me. I don't think it has made me "famous". That would be the wrong word, but after 3 years of consistent writing, I am approached by others in my field because they consider me an expert (if not the expert). It's not uncommon to find speaker invitations to top exec level events in my mailbox, and sometimes that can be a bit scary, because it creates pressure to deliver more than I think I can do. Nonetheless, to me that is more reward than money can buy, and while I do enjoy my monthly AdSense check, that is not the primary reason for me to blog. It's all about recognition and networking with the who's who in my niche.
  22. Kristi says:
I don't think being famous itself is what gets you money, but being widely known as an industry expert will certainly help. Someone with 1 million fans is likely to get a lot more sales than someone with only 100. So fame is involved, so long as the fame is for what you are marketing (product, service, etc).
    • Dennis Edell says:
Of course the flaw there is, the 1 million fans are rarely legit.
    • Brian says:
I agree 100%. I created my blog to pass along information I have learned in my web development and SEO journey. I do have an adsence account, but it's not at all why I started blogging. Anyone can say they're an industry expert, but building a reputation by answering people's questions and creating your own content is what actually gets you there.
  23. David Shaw says:
I am a traditionalist.. I believe you should blog because you enjoy it.. Rather than for the sake of becoming famous or making money..
  24. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Peter, There definitely is no correlation between fame and making money blogging. Making money is the result of doing things in a certain way while fame is a different story. I feel the key to successful blogging is to identify the reason why you want to blog: perhaps to help others, render a useful service, etc. Find this "Why" and use it as your primary motivator. Thanks for sharing! Ryan
  25. Vernon says:
Hey Peter, You take an interesting stance. Sure, blogging can be about more than making money, but for many the reason to try to make money from a blog is to have a liberating lifestyle where they can travel or work from home. Certainly, just like with any job, one shouldn't simply do it for the money - there has to be more to it to make it a fulfilling pursuit. Good point.
